16 Cycling GPS Computer Startup Times TESTED!

  • Bike computer startup time seems to vary a LOT between different manufacturers and models. It also changes regularly with firmware updates and 'optimisations', sometimes not for the better. In this video I put 16 different cycling GPS computers to the test against the clock to measure their startup time.
    NOTE: GPS/satellite lock is a whole other can of worms... One that has a lot more variables. This aside, everyone has to first wait for the initial boot-up sequence before that sync takes place.

    Wahoo Roam
    >> Start up time: 46sec
    >> GPS ready: +11sec (in a rural low mountain range area)
    Especially in summer and winter when the temperature outdoors is quite different to indoors I try to put the Wahoo on the bike outside before I collect my bottle, helemt, key, etc. This way it has a moment to acclimatise and it does not falsify your temp records in the beginning of your ride. Thus the start up time usually does not bug me unless I'm in a hurry to get going.

      This was my experience too (48 seconds). My unit is new, but fully up to date. I was on WiFi, only have 5 paired sensors, and 6.2 GB of storage used. I would guess each of these could impact the start time of any unit. You may want to account for this, @GPLama.

    Going to post this before watching, but my guess is the Bolt 2 is one of the slowest!!!! When I go into my pain cave, I first press the button on the bolt to get it booting up. I then: 1) Switch on my KICKR 2) Plug my MacBook into my dock 3) Turn my TV on and select the right input 4) Select indoor cycling on my Fenix 5) Log into my MacBook and boot up SYSTM 5) Spin my cranks to wake up the Assioma pedals. Usually if I do all that stuff after switching on the Bolt it is just about ready to go after SYSTM loads :-) Now, intrigued to see how the other units fare........... :-)

I think 15 seconds should be the target, not 30. Good on Garmin for hitting that with most of their units.

      @@AnTeallach2011 LOL you missed the point bro. From a technology perspective headunit is a very simple embedded device built with very old technology. Your 10-year old phone is more capable than that, a $10 raspberry Pi 0W is about the same level, an Apple Watch is a good show case for what you should get for the same money in 2022. It's not something that cycling is so special that makes tech struggles to keep up with, it's just this market is so small so niche that major players won't get in. We can't ride with a laptop won't change the fact that we all get scammed by the headunit thing. It's just like every niche market you don't have much choice.

    Interesting that the startup times were so similar between Wahoo units, I always feel that my Bolt 2 takes far longer to boot than my other Wahoo units. Either mine is slower than yours or it just shows how deceptive "feel" is.

  • @bengt_axle
    @bengt_axle Před rokem +4

    Bryton is fast and not only that, the GPS signals give me a very accurate altitude (within 1m, when compared to a topo map). But comparisons of boot up time with Karoo are not fair, because the latter is loading up Android OS, while the former's is much simpler.

    • @RandomAnvil
      @RandomAnvil Před rokem

    • @BikesBlades
      @BikesBlades Před rokem +1

      In what way is that unfair? The other devices built dedicated, proprietary OS's specifically to avoid the complexity (and slow boot, short battery life) of an Android device.

    • @bengt_axle
      @bengt_axle Před rokem

      @@BikesBlades It's not a competition per se but a comparison. Loading a full Android OS allows much more functions in terms of display, 3rd party apps, storage, processing power etc. A Bryton 420 cannot compete with a Karoo 2, but the former boots up and locks on to GPS quite quickly. I wouldn't be surprised if Bryton's run on a Linux kernel, which is much more compact.

    My Karoo II boots from fully off to ready for ride in 49 seconds (latest firmware). I timed it several times, it is pretty consistent. I was pretty surprised with your experience, that is over 2x as long.
    Maybe offline charts related? Or probably you have (way) more sensors to connect? I have 2 cadence, 1 HR and one Tacx, that is all. On the other hand, it goes searching for those after boot, so that probably does not affect actual boot time.

    I would be more interested in seeing how fast these units are from turning on to finding a useable GPS signal.
    These start-up times are not that interesting to me, anything below about 30 seconds is more than good enough, since I'll grab the headunit when I go out the door. Then I have to fetch my bike from the shed and by the time I am ready to ride away they will have started up anyway (Unless you have a Karoo, that was shockingly slow).
    But with GPS units from friends I have seen a huge variation in how fast GPS units are able to find decent/useable GPS signal, so I think that would be a great follow-up test for all these head-units!

    would a factory reset and then firmware check make them faster? a bit like a pc.. after so many years of use and updates, a fresh format seemed to make the fast again.

    • @gplama
      @gplama  Před rokem +1

      Maybe. Some firmware updates on EDGE units will go back and adjust all the stored activities (FIT files). That takes AGES on units with a shiteton of activities. Always good to back those up and clear out that folder every now and then.

    I just started my Karoo 2 latest firmware full sensors, 51 seconds. No where near your 1.4x seconds!? What’s up with that?? Performance after startup trashes the others.

    • @CanyonWanderer
      @CanyonWanderer Před rokem +1

      Indeed, I'm also around 50 seconds, but map and UI responsiveness are great after that. The Map is the best as is rerouting. I've been on few group rides, but was asked a few times what the Karoo advised to get back on track because most Garmins were lost (rerouting to the point where we left the route..)

    One question...does this startup test take into account units trying to find paired sensors?

    • @gplama
      @gplama  Před rokem +2

      No, just the 'system' startup time. GPS/GNSS, sensor, and phone pairing usually starts once the systems are up and running.

  • @marcus_velo_9970
    @marcus_velo_9970 Před rokem

    yep the karoo 2 is a lemon when it comes to start times (mine 1:35), now with the loss of shimano features, its going. then you have the karoo 2 laggy, windows with no ram like performance, looks so clunky.

      Don't worry, my Karoo II booted in 49 seconds. Yes that is 37 seconds slower than the Garmin, but totally worth it! Those 37 seconds you can make up by changing your 'dressing up' sequence: turn unit on, put gloves on, put shoes on (unit is ready by now), put bidon in cage, no problem 🙂
