  • A fascinating and insightful film documenting the famous observations and experiments of Brian Clarke and John Goddard. Their celebrated studies into trout behaviour, habitat, feeding patterns and rise forms, and their ingenious artificial flies for 'educated trout' were detailed in their exhaustive and ground-breaking book "The Trout and the Fly: A New Approach" (1980)
The film focuses on the brown trout in his natural setting on the river Kennet, a classic English chalk stream. The filming and photography are superb and the research and ideas expressed are still relevant and exciting more than thirty years later.
One of the most informative, engaging and beautiful films ever made about fly-fishing.

John Goddard said the trout wouldn't move to take the fly and then it moved a yard out 🙄 Expert my arse.......you could clearly see how much drag was there. Nothing at all to do with the fly

A little?! It's cringe worthy how snobby it is, especially in the intro.

' fishing these world famous waters, is a very different business from dangling a worm from a hook ' ......🤮 No wonder game angling in this country has such a pretentiius, upperclass stereotype......actually, truth is they fishing a chalk stream so likely many fish they catching are actually stocked and if they think worm fishing is oh so lowly and unskillfull, I'd have liked to see these so called ' experts ' trying to use up stream worm on a low river catching seatrout.
