    Oh dear Daki, you are setting the bar higher with each episode you publish. I do not want to avoid watching other knitting podcasts but I feel drawn to watch and listen to meaningful content with the little screen time I get in my evenings. You bring up fresh and practical concepts with such depth and passion. Thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge and expertise with us.
    I haven’t read a knitting story book before. Story Made sounds like a delightful book to read and explore. #storymadegiveaway

      Dearest Meryeme, your words are like the sound of spring water to me as I sit and read this tonight. I'm so, so grateful for your support and to know that you're gaining such value from these videos. I know what you're speaking of, how precious time is when you have little ones to tend to all day, and how we horde that time only to give it to what is closest to our hearts. I'm gratified my friend. P.s. I've never pinned a comment here ony CZcams but I hope you won't mind me pinning yours. It's the highest and most genuine praise I've received. ❤️🙏🏾❤️

    My interjection response. I was a person that said I was planning to unsubscribe from a couple of “ produce and purchase” pushers. My way is not to just row over what I don’t want and drop my lure with what I do want to see. I am quite capable of that but at my age avoidance techniques suit me well. I don’t have enough years left to bother with the small stuff such as knitting something I am disliking or for looking for the positive in a podcast that is shallow. Which is why I loved Amble and am loving this. I don’t subscribe to Instagram never have followed anyone on it. I am no longer interested in FB, I am not Tick Tock, I am not hashtags in any way. I don’t do KALs. I prefer to knit what I want when I want. I am aware that this generation relies on income generated from small media, and I love that CZcams is like a library and school at my fingertips. So I am saying I don’t need to stay and relate to certain things on social media, I don’t have to understand, I don’t have to see both sides. Yes I am responsible for how I respond to things. I am an old girl now. Walking away is cathartic and underrated. Avoidance is an absolute response. 😉. Anyways you are exactly what I like to listen too, thoughtful, young, fresh, deep. One day you will be old and say “avoidance is highly underrated!” Because you will have already tried changing things and realized you can’t, you will have already tried rolling with it and realized you can’t, you would have tried taking the good and giving a pffft to the bad and realize you simply don’t want to. ❤️‍🩹

    • @woolandtheforest
      @woolandtheforest  Před rokem +2

      😄 Such a fantastic response! I love that you say walking away is cathartic and underrated. I have to say I was nodding along with much of what you're saying. Trying to relate to everything is definitely not the way, and I do hope that was not the message I was giving. Perhaps I need to articulate this more subtly. I actually think this crazy state of affairs we see in my generation and younger is exactly because everyone tries to be everything to everyone else. And a fully developed human being should have a discriminatory and discerning intellect. Thank you for your wisdom and for sharing these kind words about what I'm doing here🙏🏾

    I'm so glad I stumbled across Amble and Knit yesterday, and now can watch your Wool and the Forest episodes. I don't know any knitters who live anywhere near me, and my friends and family get bored if I talk about it too much, so your podcast really does feel like spending time with a kindred spirit talking about a mutual love of knitting. Thank you for creating these and putting so much into them! In terms of reading, I really enjoy knitting books that are a combination of human insight and sharing, history, and story. One of my favourites is 'This Golden Fleece' by Esther Rutter. It's a very personal story about her own relationship to sheep, fibre, and knitting, and yet she also explores the history of knitting in the UK, and tries out historical patterns as she weaves her tale. She has a real love of and expertise in language too, and introduces and explains some fascinating knitting terms and their origins. The next knitting book I plan to read is called 'In the Footsteps of Sheep: Tales of a Journey Through Scotland, Walking, Spinning, and Knitting Socks' by Debbie Zawinski. The book is about the author's lone travels around Scotland where she pulled fleece that was caught on fences, spun the wool into yarn on a drop spindle, and knitted socks with it. Again, it's a very personal account and sounds like it will be a wonderful read. 'Story Maker' sounds like a lovely book, thanks for introducing it. I'm in Scotland so not entering the giveaway because it would have to be shipped so far, but I love hearing about books and would love to hear more recommendations. Sorry for such a long comment!

So thank you for that. your channel is such a breath of fresh air. I appreciate the conversations centered around soil. This last year is when I realized just how much of an impact animal agriculture has made on our planet and the over consumption and waste of food. Heartbreaking. So thank you. That feels like a long time ago now, since I've decided to make a living into translating my experiments into (not very pithy) instructions for others to follow... I’m inspired now to freeform a beautiful jacket like yours. I’m 73 and I really find reading and following patterns a lot more difficult than I used to, especially if I am reading from an iPad. The idea of just casting on and going with the flow really appeals to me and I have a lot of woolly wool to use up. I knit a lot of socks, a lot of them large men’s size for my family as they really love their socks. I don’t need to read a pattern for socks, and I think that’s why I enjoy knitting them so much. Your husband will love you (even more)for knitting those socks! I’m Scottish, but I think the way to pronounce Jonsdottir is simply like John’s daughter, which is what it means. Just the way Johnson is son of John. Please anyone from Iceland correct me if I’m wrong! I’m off now to search my stash to knit myself a warm jacket. Thank you. 🥰

      Thank you for this. After viewing a knitting film on you tube, I had commented speaking of my former years of raising my merino herds. No response . Only speaking on self and having. I have seen such false entitlement via the fibers with stash being the integral word. I was also shamed in a comment section for stating linen shrinks in hot water. Having grown flax and processed flax one knows the fibers. Daki exemplifies what the trending “cult” is not. Let us be together in the space and time. ❤

    Your podcast are always such a joy to watch and listen to. My one year old seems to enjoy them as well, especially the music. Today he was playing with the ball of yarn I was crocheting from and carrying it throughout the living room. I’ve learned to sit in a chair that will swivel. A story about knitting that I’ve come to appreciate is how much my great grandmother loved to knit. I never met her, but it is wonderful to be able to do something that she loved and enjoy it as well. It’s opened up some conversations with my grandma that I wouldn’t have had otherwise. #storymakergiveaway

    The concept of zero-waste garment cutting truly baffles me, because the leftover parts from traditionally-cut tailored garments are so useful! The largest leftovers can be used for bags or other accessories, the smaller parts for quilts, and the smallest bits for batting/stuffing. If I use up the entire yardage for a "zero-waste" garment, I only get the single garment; if I cut more detailed garments that leave "waste", I don't have to purchase more fabric/fibers to use for these other crafts. It seems more wasteful to let all that go into a garment where it isn't actually needed.
    I do enjoy the zero-waste approach merely for the challenge of making something look well without being as closely fitted. There are certainly beautiful styles that come out of it. I'm just not convinced that it's the most economical, or least waste, use of the full yardage.

    • @woolandtheforest
      @woolandtheforest  Před rokem +2

      Zero waste or minimum waste styles of making garments have been the traditional way of clothing people in many of the ancient cultures of the world, and I consider it to be an ancestral technique for me. Not just in South Asia but even in Japan and West africa, zero waste garment and cutting is how people created the traditional clothes, and the shapes and styles that came out of this way of making garments was closely tied to the type of loom technology that was available in each of these cultures. Loom width, the length of warp that could be wound, and many other factors were taken into consideration when the garment itself was planned. The aim was always to reduce cuttings, and to ensure that a multi-functional garment that could be used in a variety of situations and seasons, was produced. In these traditional cultures having many items was not the focus, rather a few items of extremely high quality and multi-purpose garments. The south Asian sari, for example, is in my opinion one of the most long-lasting, and resilient traditional outfits there is on the planet, and is the most fully zero waste garment there is. Using 9 yd of fabric to drape a woman's form was never considered wasteful, as the extra folds were used in all sorts of ways in different temperatures and in different activities to aid a woman's work throughout her day. I grew up watching the women in my life doing everything they needed to do in a day wearing a sari. Perhaps modern styles of zero waste are more about the aesthetic than functionality, but my focus is primarily on traditional types of zero waste garment design.

    • @bekahfisher3614
      @bekahfisher3614 Před rokem

      Thank you so much for explaining that. I had not realized the modern zero-waste patterns I have seen were tied to ancestral traditions - I had only taken them at face value since I saw them primarily from Western sources and it conflicted with the thrifty scarcity-driven concept of making the most of materials that I have inherited from the Depression-era mindset. It makes beautiful sense the way you describe it, particularly with the intentional weaving to desired size component.

I also love your free form garment and I thought, have you considered making a little hole in the seam of your "sleeve" and creating another cord inside your garment, so that you tie both sides in a similar way. I am so glad I have found your channel. It is refreshing to find a knitting podcaster who does not shy away from talking about the plight of our Earth home. I got into trouble on one fb group for daring to mention the environment in relation to not being able to find high twist sock wool without nylon in it and the disaster caused by synthetic fibres. I was just expressing my frustration and upset and I seem to have been interpreted as making people feel like they are being hung for using acrylic (her words, not mine). Needless to say I have ditched that group. I can't understand why people think caring for the earth is political, it is not. Sure our politicians are the ones with the power to change things and we have to let them know what we want. But it is not a political issue, it is a health, happiness and ultimately survival issue (or something like that).

      Oh I could not agree with you more Margaret, people simply have no idea what it is to face real physical hardship and to actually question our ability to survive. I think this kind of willful ignorance and complacency comes from two generations of people having lived in far too much comfort and convenience, where survival was never threatened in any real, material, existential way. Unfortunately it's not one group of people or the other that will be hung for the consumption habits that cause so much destruction on the planet; we will all be hung for it, figuratively speaking, if we do not start making big changes now. I agree with the thing about what behaviors we adopt depending on our knowledge, our abilities, etc. and yes, it's so true that we can't ask anyone to adopt the "perfect" behavior at all times! I also think one important thing is to consider where the person is starting. Maybe we'd all be more willing to try to act better if things were presented like that more often. I'm thinking about the example of meat consumption (just an example, I'm not here to promote a way of eating). Some people eat a ton of meat and feel like vegetarians are trying to make them stop completely. I understand. If someone would show them delicious vegetarian recipes they could make just 1 day a week, it would appear more realistic to them and maybe they'd like the new recipes and finally reduce their meat consumption.
    One thing I don't agree is the thing about humans always wanting to do the right thing. I know a lot of people are indeed trying to do the right thing and that's wonderful, but I also see that a lot of people are not, either by lying to themselves or by not wanting to know about certain things. In those ways, they keep their conscience asleep and don't feel guilty to keep acting in a certain way. There's also another thing to consider, which brings us back to what you were saying at the beginning. A lot of people think they do the right thing because for one reason or another, they act in ways that might seem right to them (lying stealing, or even killing, for example) but have really negative consequences. I totally respect your vision though and I think our world would be a much better place if everyone would really try to do the right thing (not without mistakes but at least trying) and would at least know the good direction.
    I hope everything makes sense and that my comment doesn't seem aggressive or rude. I'm fighting a bad cold (so no worries for your sniffling haha) and it can be hard to have clear ideas and writing when we're sick 😄

      Thank you so much for joining in the giveaway and I do think it is a very beautifully written book. The story is compelling, and written in a very heartfelt way. And of course the patterns are all highly knittable💙🙏🏾

    #storymakergiveaway! My goal this year is to learn how to knit. My grandmother made beautiful things for all the children. I am surrounded by people who have a lot of work/ career related goals so mine seems a bit strange but I just feel this is what I want ;) Thank you for the effort you put in your channel. Greetings from Amsterdam

    Hi! You mentioned using up what you have before you buy more. I'm curious if that also extends to your projects to some extent? Do you finish what you're working on before casting on something similar (eg one sweater, sock, hat, on the needles at a time) or do you Cast on as inspiration strike s provided you have the yarn?
    Also #storymadegiveaway 😍

      I usually have no more than three projects on the needle, but more often it's just two. And I always always make sure that I finish the three that I have cast on before I start new projects. 🙏🏾😊

    Hello Daki,
    I just recently found your channel and I‘m so happy I did. Watching your podcasts is like chatting with a long missed friend, feeling really at home. And I‘m so grateful for your tips referring the use of unspun ❤😍
    Since I was a kid I enjoy fairy-tale-storytelling. I live in Germany and here we have quite many (in my opinion) really good storytellers.
    And there are many fariy-tales about spinning and weaving. And knitting too.
    One of my favorites is „The kitten and the knitting needles” from Ludwig Bechstein (1801-1860) and one of my favorite female storytellers is Frau Wolle (means Miss or Mrs. Wool) from Austria.
    But because I‘m also relatively new to knitting I don‘t have a special/loved knitting book. Not yet. I‘m more likely looking for one 🙈
    So I really would like to join the giveaway:

      Hello there Alene! What sweet words you have left for me here and I thank you so much for taking the time to leave this comment. I'm so happy to hear that you feel warm and welcome when you're watching my podcast. I too have a lifelong love for fairy tales and fantasy stories and I thank you for sharing your two favorites which I have not heard of before, but I will certainly try and hunt them down now. Sending best wishes in return to you and yours🙏🏾💙

      @@woolandtheforest / Dear Daki, I hope you don't mind 😳 but I thought I could post the little fairy-tale here for you so you wouldn't have to search for it.
      It's really a short one and quite memorable (A few years ago I worked with seniors in a nursing home and they loved it 😊)
      „The kitten and the knitting needles”
      Once upon a time there was a poor woman who went into the forest to gather wood. As she was returning with her burden, she saw a sick kitten lying behind a fence, crying miserably. The poor woman took it pitiful in her apron and carried it home. On the way her two children met her and when they saw that the mother was carrying something, they asked: "Mother, what are you carrying?" and wanted the kitten right away; but the compassionate woman did not give the kitten to the children for fear they would torment it, but laid it at home on old soft clothes and gave it milk to drink. When the kitten had fed itself and was well again, it was suddenly gone and gone. After a while the poor woman went back into the forest, and when she came back with her load of wood to the place where the sick kitten had lain, a very distinguished lady stood there, beckoned the poor woman to her and threw five knitting needles into her apron. The woman did not quite know what to think, and this strange gift seemed very small to her; but she took the knitting needles and showed them to her children and laid the five knitting needles in the evening on the table. But when the woman left her bed the next morning, behold, there was a pair of new, ready-knit stockings lying on the table. This surprised the poor woman beyond measure, and the next evening she put the needles back on the table, and the next morning there were again new stockings. Now she realized that as a reward for her compassion for the sick kitten she had been given these hard-working needles, and she let them knit every night until she and the children had enough stockings. Then she also sold stockings and had enough until the end of her life.
      (Translation maybe a bit bumpy, sorry for that 🙈)

    I think CZcams is a lot better for more nuanced conversation because of the video format. A lot of people make very long videos and a lot of us watch them. On other social media platforms like Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, etc, everything is very condensed down to a few words or a short clip or photo. That kind of medium makes it impossible to get into anything with any detail or nuance.

    • @woolandtheforest

      I definitely agree Kate that the loss of nuance, subtleties, and the gray areas in all issues and arguments, has been one of the greatest disadvantages of the social media age. 🙏🏾
