reading the personal statement that got me into maths at cambridge | isolation diaries ep. 2

- day 2 of isolation and i've resorted to reading out my personal statement on youtube. things r going downnnn.
that said, in a way it's kind of satisfying realising how little i knew about maths when i was applying over 3 years ago compared to now having come to the end of my degree. back in the day when cutting up mobius strips was the most exciting thing we did in school...
hope this is entertaining (and useful? maybe?), my main takeaway would be that personal statements for maths are a bit dumb and no one really cares (especially cambridge) so it's much more simple than it sounds - all you gotta do to apply is to like maths. that's it really.
as always happy to answer questions + chat in the comments below or over on insta, if you're thinking of applying and having anything you're unsure about whether to do with the university or degree specifically, shoot me a message!

Excellent insight into your passion for maths. Maths has always fascinated me as I am not very good at it, which probably sounds pretty counterintuitive. But it has a kind mystic attraction for me. As someone who is well pleased if he can construct and solve a simultaneous equation at GCSE level, I am in awe of people like you who are ace at it. (Btw, yes mobius strips are very interesting.)
Thank you so much for this sort of video!! There aren’t that many maths students at Cambridge that do CZcams (as far as I know) so it’s very very helpful to hear from you about the admissions process xx
glad it was helpful! if there are any other things you would like to see let me know very open to suggestions!! xx
Perfect timing! I have to start my ps and I’m terrified I’ll go wrong somewhere, so thank you so much. Hope isolation isn’t too difficult so far ♡
hey, glad to be helpful, good luck with writing yours and don't worry!! there's no such thing as a perfect personal statement - if you bring across your enthusiasm and throw in some of your achievements you'll be absolutely fine :) xx
This women’s and intellectual GOAT!
This is the best personal statement I’ve ever heard
Wow, my first math book in primary school was also 'The Number Devil' by Enzensberger! I am applying to Cambridge for 2022 entry and this video has been a great help as reference for my own personal statement which I am very thankful for.
personal statement queen 👑
So, how exactly do you find a formula for the number of chain isomers of alkenes with n carbons? I assume it would be something to do trees but it would be very cool if you made a video on this :).
How to you get work experience at a university lab?
Very interesting
Did you ever buy into the whole thing about being able to just write "I like maths"
I personally wouldn't haha but I do think that cambridge generally doesn't put much emphasis at all on the personal statement for maths (and other STEM subjects too)
@@hannahwing-yee138 Out of curiousity: do they place most emphasis on the interview?
Rly interesting
Any advice in preparing for step exams?
don’t be disheartened if it feels very challenging at first - try some of the STEP assignments provided by Cambridge and try to see as many past questions as you can, the more you see the more familiar you will get with the format. good luck!
