    I'm assuming in the near future Asus will be releasing that Hyper M.2 card, or a similar one. I know they sell a gen 3 and gen 4 version. I'm ordering a z790 Strix board in a few weeks and would love to have that card so I could add a gen 5 m.2 in the future. I WISH this board wasn't $800, it's so beautiful.

    • @ALKtech
      @ALKtech  Před rokem

      Nice, I'm guessing you're going for the ROG STRIX Z790-A which has the predominantly silver aesthetic?
      That said, even if ASUS does release a Gen. 5 version of the Hyper M.2 card, the ROG STRIX board that you're thinking of getting might not be able to enable PCIe 5.0 link speeds for the M.2 slots on the said ROG Hyper card - this would be due to chipset and slot bandwidth limitations, and varies from board to board...the high-end ASUS Z790 boards like the MAXMUS Z790 HERO do come with a Gen. 5 ROG Hyper M.2 add-on card for instance!

    NOTE: This video was published before 48GB DDR5 memory modules were available - according to the ASUS specs page, this motherboard now supports up to 192GB of RAM with 4x 48GB DDR5 memory modules.

    Is this great for gaming and multi-tasking?

    • @ALKtech
      @ALKtech  Před 2 lety +1

      For sure - I'd find it odd to pair such a high-end motherboard with anything other than a Core i7/i9, so yes, this would be a solid bedrock for a beast of a PC!

    Hello, do you have to use water cooling for this board or can it be passively cooled and no water inside?

    • @ALKtech
      @ALKtech  Před 2 lety +2

      Water cooling is optional - the heatsinks will run just fine without liquid in them!

  • @omario7

    Awesome review! I just bought one of these bad boys and I can’t wait to build with it. Do you know by any chance which one of the ports on the VRMs is the inlet for water cooling and which is the outlet? Or does it even matter? I looked everywhere in the manual and on the internet but I can’t find anything…

    • @ALKtech
      @ALKtech  Před 2 lety +3

      Either port for inlet/outlet will be fine - it all depends on how your water cooling setup is going to be like (i.e. route it in the way that's most convenient for your setup)!

    Got this for 500 bucks on sale! Can’t wait to put it all together this weekend. Should I install my Samsung 990 pro int he hyper case or directly on the motherboard?

    • @ALKtech
      @ALKtech  Před rokem +2

      Sweet! Are you gunning for a white-themed build?
      I'd stick the 990 Pro into the M2_1 slot on the motherboard itself, since the 990 PRO's a PCIe 4.0 x4 part. In future, if you upgrade to a PCIe 5.0 SSD, you can install it on the Hyper M.2 add-on card - one of the slots on it supports PCIe 5.0 x4. Do note that in doing so, your primary PCIe 5.0 x16 slot will drop down to x8 mode instead!

    Hi, thank you for such a detailed video. I was wondering if I would run into any issues if I were to install 3 nvme m.2 Pcle on this board? I would like to add 1tb for the OS, 2TB for files and games and 1TB for only pictures since I do edit a few. My question is would it suffer any bottleneck or performance issues

    • @ALKtech
      @ALKtech  Před 2 lety +1

      You should be fine with 3 NVMe M.2 SSDs - just bear in mind one of the M.2 slots on the board itself supports PCIe 3.0 instead of PCIe 4.0, so if your SSDs are all of the PCIe 4.0 standard, the SSD installed on the PCIe 3.0 slot will naturally step down to operate at PCIe 3.0 mode instead. That said, perhaps consider installing the drive intended for pictures on the PCIe 3.0 M.2 slot, as I highly doubt photo editing would be able to saturate the PCIe 3.0 x4 lanes. Cheers.

    • @thepopeofkeke
      @thepopeofkeke Před rokem

      If you use hyper card then yes. It cuts your Pcie lane from from 16 to 8.

    How is this ready for 13th gen if it's a 12th gen board?

    • @ALKtech
      @ALKtech  Před rokem

      The Z690 chipset was released alongside 12th Gen, but has support for 13th Gen Raptor Lake CPUs with just a BIOS update! After updating the BIOS, you'll be able to use the latest 13th Gen CPUs with this board.

  • @xenovier
    @xenovier Před 2 lety

    Hello! Thank you for the review. Need your advice. I have only one PCIE 4.0 NVMe M.2 SSD 1TB. Which config you reckon is best?
    1) Install at M.2_1?
    2) Install in ROG Hyper M2 Card?
    Is it merely personal preference and aesthetics or there is performance differences?
    1) Rig less crowded and less weight
    2) Rig will look more "cool".
    Much appreciate your feedback and thank you in advance.

    • @ALKtech
      @ALKtech  Před 2 lety +3

      I'd install the said M.2 drive on M.2_1 (on the board directly), as your SSD doesn't support PCIe 5.0 and therefore there is no performance benefit to be had by using the ROG Hyper M.2 card. And since there's no performance benefit, no point in having the M.2 card take up an additional PCIe slot!

    Do you know why it doesn’t come with screws to screw it into the case?

    • @ALKtech
      @ALKtech  Před 2 lety

      Motherboards don't come with the screws for mounting in the case - the PC case manufacturer usually supplies them instead when you buy a PC case. Trust this clarifies!

    The usb ports on the front of my old case that I want to use are USB 3.0. Will I be able to plug in the cables from this MB's USB 3.2 headers into my case's USB 3.0 ports?

    • @ALKtech
      @ALKtech  Před 2 lety +1

      USB 3.0 and USB 3.2 Gen 1 are exactly the same - the name differences are due to a...confusing marketing move on the part of the USB consortium. All in all, you will have no issues plugging in your USB 3.0 front panel connector to the 19-pin USB 3.2 Gen 1 headers on the board, and using them as per normal.

    Is it better than hero ?

    • @ALKtech
      @ALKtech  Před 2 lety

      It beats the Hero in terms of features for sure - the Formula has 10Gbit Ethernet, a 20+1 power delivery solution rated to 105A and CrossChill EK III VRM heatsinks that support water cooling, while the Hero has 2.5Gbit Ethernet, a 20+1 power delivery solution rated to 90A and non-branded VRM heatsinks. Not forgetting to mention the Formula has a white colour theme and a LiveDash OLED display!

  • @BalkanBiker
    @BalkanBiker Před 2 lety

    This is the motherboard to get if you want a white build. Not sure why that expansions card is silver though, or why it even exists.
    Also, Asus missed an opportunity to make that OLED screen rotatable as it seems the app doesn't support it either.
    Anyway, I should have it today. It's going to be a glorious build with Lian Li O11 Snow Edition with white fans/AIO water cooler/Creative white sound card. The GPU will have to wait :-)

    • @ALKtech
      @ALKtech  Před 2 lety

    Which is better this one or msi meg z690 unify x or msi meg z690 unify?

    • @ALKtech
      @ALKtech  Před 2 lety +2

      This ASUS board is priced around US$300 more than the 2 MSI boards that you mentioned - so the question would be, do you need the additional features that the ROG MAXIMUS has over the 2 MSI boards? E.g. the CrossChill III VRM heatsinks, 10 gigabit ethernet, LiveDash OLED etc? You'd also need to quantify whether or not these additional features are worth the ~US$300 increase in price, in the context of your own usage scenarios!

    • @ALKtech
      @ALKtech  Před 2 lety

      Do you need the Extreme's overclocking features that are targeted at users who intend to do liquid nitrogen cooling? If yes, then you might want to consider getting the Extreme, which also gives you additional features such as an additional 2.5 gigabit ethernet port, a ROG Clavis DAC dongle and so on.
      Otherwise, if you intend to do say, water cooling, the Formula might be a better choice, and you do get to save some money too!
