Vax is the brother, Vex is the sister. Don't feel too bad about mixing up the names though, it happened a lot in-game too.

Vax's type is pretty much "looks like a cinnamon roll but could definitely kill you" and really, who can fault his taste?

Vax has nicknames for all of them...Stubby is Vex, Pickle is Pike, Kiki is Keyleth, Big Guy is Grog....
He also called Percy "Freddy" because of his second of many names. And Scan-Man for Scanlan. But it hasn't come up yet
Extra horror - Keyleth's antlers are a headpiece. With the girl they hanged, look close. They just nailed some to her head.

and to add to the mess, canonically (from the table) the pointed ears were cut and cropped on the person they hung instead of finding an elf or half elf to represent the vox machina members.
But yes, they did get dinner first.
To further add to the horror, remember in the actual game they also hung a bear...
Ashley Johnson, who plays Pike, actually had to leave a lot during both campaign 1 and 2 cause because she was on the show Blindspot and had to go to New York during filming periods.
She's Vex, he's Vax.
Ashley Johnson (Pike) auditioned for the CBS TV show Blindspot shortly after the home game became a Twitch stream. She had to leave for filming in New York shortly after.

The freaking ROPES CREAKING instead of music to close it out was SO spine chilling and invoked EXACTLY the same feeling that the original stream did. In the OG game the Briarwoods hunted a bear and hung it alongside them.
Accurately depicting the fate of all horses in every DnD game because how impractical is it to maintain 3-6 horses while you're stomping around killing everything that moves?? They always either die or you let them loose
Ugh, now I'm just remembering when a black-robed mage waited for our hut to run out, then hit us with a fireball and instantly torched almost all of our horses...
that's why i'm so glad our DM gave our party a mastodon-sized living crystal that eats sunlight to travel on. (Sherbet is a very good girl and we love her)

Ashley Johnson, who plays Pike, had to leave for New York to be on Blindspot. They were without her several times throughout the 2 campaigns. She was able to Skype in for some of the sessions, but not everytime.
yeah the sun tree reveal in the stream was really dark when it happened. The flashbacks were nods to events that happened toward the beginning of the stream before the Briarwood arc started (minus Scanlan's, that's new).
Ashley (the VA for Pike) had gotten cast as a character in Blindspot that forced her to move across the country right when the campaign began streaming, so
Pike was only in sporadic episodes when her filming schedule allowed.

It really seems pretty normal and expected to us, until you think about in the lore a LITERAL GOD planted the tree a millennia ago and it survived until the briarwoods. The amount of sheer dark energy they had to influence the tree with to hurt it that much is a crazy thought. Not to mention how powerful the tree is to still be standing even after everything it's been through. These kinda thoughts are what convinces me that matt is an amazing world creator
The gods that have been mentioned so far are the Everlight and the Dawnfather. Everlight is a minor goddess of redemption and light, Dawnfather is a god of the sun and farming.
I think they are using the generic terms for their gods as well to avoid copyright issues. The Everlight would be Sarenrae and the Dawnfather would be Pelor.
@@axisjack7 they are, but it started with the first Tal'dorei campaign guide and in campaign 2. They started to use different names for the standard D&D gods. Matron of Ravens for the Raven Queen.
Horses are very hard to animate. They were doomed.

The Pike-alike girl was there for Critters who knew about the Sun Tree reveal in the original stream where that scene happens. It basically tells them, "Yes, we are going to do it... and we are gonna make it hurt."
BTW: Pike-alike Girl is voiced by a daughter of the voice actor who plays Scanlan. The kids killed in the first episode were voiced by the daughter of Vax's voice actor and the son of Scanlan's voice actor.
One of my favorite little details that probably won’t be noted in the show is that the name for the model of gun Percy uses is called the Pepperbox, as has been stated, but Percy also has names for his specific guns. He named his personal Pepperbox “The List”… you can see why…
In the world canon, No Mercy Percy invents firearms. That is why he is the only one seen using them during C1. He dubbed that style The Pepperbox, and later renamed it The List when he began to enact his revenge. In C2 (which takes place 20 years later) another character finds a firearm and slowly figures out how to make it work.
@@metaforest Correct, but I do like idea of it being the Pepperbox named The List, like my friend has his father’s Magnum, which he named Eagle’s Wings.
During the streamed game both Keylith and Vax explained they were bisexual.

He is a bard, and his power is drawn from the raw creative essence of his music. He didn't have his lute but he still has that sexy voice. he can also use his voice to cast spells on top of using his instruments, they are just all cast in song form.

And it completely makes him look like a complete Bad A. . . when he’s doing it.
That spell has material components though. It's one of the few spells he shouldn't have been able to cast empty handed. Not that I'm complaining

Also, he is from the college of Lore subclass. So he is allowed to learn 2 non bard spells. This spell is one of them so he doesn't even need the instrument focus AS MUCH (technically he needs a focus in place of actual magical components but yeah...)
@@yiklongtay6029 Nope. The two spells he learned as a College of Lore Bard were Counterspell and Lightning Bolt. I don't know how Scanlan learned Bigby's Hand, but it wasn't from his Sub-Class. It's entirely possible that Scanlan had a very similar spell pre-stream when they were playing Pathfinder and Matt just let him take it as a Bard to maintain continuity when they switched from Pathfinder to D&D.
All of the "worst monster" moments except for Scanlan's actually happened in the live stream game before the Briarwoods. Vex killed a rakshasa named Hotis (which is a tiger-shaped demon that assumes the identity of other creatures). Keyleth killed an evil guard by pushing them into lava. When they started screaming in pain she said "Shhh, shhh!" and tried to use a wind spell to push him under to hurry his demise (but ended up just cooling the magma around him and holding him in place). Grog fought an umberhulk and finished it off by ripping apart its jaws and pulling out it's tongue with his teeth.
I think it was a Bullette, not an Umberhulk
@@Howler452 You're right. They fought the bullette in the underdark, they fought the umberhulk pre-stream.
A Rakshasa is a devil, not a demon. It is a minor detail, but a one that may or may not be important in future seasons.
This entire series is based on a channel by the name of 'Critical Role' and their first campaign. They're currently on their third campaign and the intro/tag line, I guess would be a good word to use, is, "Welcome to Critical Role, where a bunch of us nerdy ass voice actors sit around and play Dungeons and Dragons." The people voicing the characters also actually played said characters in the campaign. 'The Legend of Vox Machina' was originally a Kickstarter for an animated short, then it evolved into an entire series and the Kickstarter got over 11 million dollars in donations. They were gonna animate it themselves and already had art, voice actors, etc. Then Amazon stepped in to distribute it. A third season will be coming out, probably a year or two from now. So yes, it is very much based on an actual campaign and I'd love to see you guys react to Campaign 2 and some of the mini-series like Exandria Unlimited and Exandria Unlimited: Calamity
Here's a trivia, Pike wasn't at the dinner in the original campaign. So the Briarwoods never got a look at her. So I was strangely super excited to see that they decided to hang a second child. Bonus darkness.
And they remembered that in the show Briarwoods didn't meet Trinket, so there is no bear on the tree.
Pike's player has thus far been in every episode of Critical Role Campaign 3 (as a character unique to the campaign and a miniseries before it, afaik), and I love it. Makes me wish she'd been able to do the same in campaign 1 or 2, but I understand why she couldn't.

Really the horses death in the show was more merciful than it was in the campaign.

One of my favorite Keyleth moments in this series is at 7:22, she just looks so badass when Vax is getting bit. Notice her eyes glow green and then so does the wolf creature that makes a whimper sound. I am not sure what kind of animal intimidation spell she casts, but it looks great.
Yooo, very astute observation/deduction regarding Pike's absence and the reasoning being the actor's schedule in the original D&D campaign.

Vax has names for a bunch of the party. Pike is Pickle, Grog is Big Man, Keyleth is Kiki, Vex is Stubby, and he has a bunch of names to make fun of Percy.
I think it makes sense with "undead" since it has been dead but isn't anymore, nor is it quite alive, so it is undead. As opposed to something living that's quite alive and hasn't been dead. Unless they have been resurrected... But then they are back to life again, as opposed to that which is undead. I get that it can be confusing. =)

Resurrection involves bringing back the body with a soul. Undead beings don't have souls.

When Vox Machina were around the camp fire and Vax told his story, the creature he killed is a Rakshasa. If you know what they are capable of... then you know that wasn't the last of him. I wont spoil that but if anyone wants to look into that creatures lore... you know what it is called now.
I feel like they will omit that. The next arc is already going to be incredibly THICC
@@yiklongtay6029 I have a feeling they'll split the next arc into at least two seasons, and they showed the Rakshasa in this episode specifically to tease _that_ scene for down the line.

They are also available in podcast form but it adds a little extra to actually watch the videos. Matt makes excellent battle maps and miniatures
Just be aware of the timesink the campaign is. They have more hours of footage than The Simpsons and One Piece, put together. Like way over a thousand hours by now.

Girl, not liking Kiki and Vax, but wanting Gilmore and Vax to ship was a whole thing for me all through campaign 1! I'm right there with ya. Gilmore & Vax forever!
Yeah, I always got the feeling that if it wasn't a game with your friend whose feelings you didn't want to hurt, if they were a real life couple, Keyleth would have eventually had the nerve to be like "Ok, thanks for the memories, but I think I need to explore other relationships..." They really did not make sense as a couple.
