    I’m surprised you didn’t bring this up, but Hasbro actually tried something new with the Deathsaurus project from last year. That figure only had two stretch goals, the Metal-Destroying Cannon/Flail, and the blast effects/throne, and both were revealed right at the start. It had huge momentum, funding quicker than the othee Transformers Haslabs. Not only that, but after it got funded, they announced a bonus 3rd stretch goal consisting of some mini-cons meant to go with the Victory Saber project, as a special reward for funding so quickly. Honestly a system like that seems like it could really benefit other projects as well.

    I’ve always thought they should toss out stretch goals altogether and instead lower the price with each backer number milestone. Like if they get to 20k with the Ghost, lower the price by $100. It would make it much more palatable.

    I also think there is an opportunity for smaller projects as well or at least a radial change to how they do pre-orders.
    Take Serpentor for example… the figure is amazing. But you had to play the lottery where the website actually processed the order. Why not run a 30 day campaign where…. you can just order the figure? I’ll gladly wait if I know I’m going to get one and not have to pay scalper prices. Then if you get 40k orders or something… reward the people that order it with some cool accessories. Throw in a throne?
    The bonus to this is that you don’t have to do the god awful preorder rush that for some reason no company does well at all.

    One of the things that I think is apparent with HasLab pricing is that it seems like the "extras" aren't extra; they are taken into account in the "base price." You aren't getting those tiers for free, but if the tiers don't hit you are still paying for them. That's why everyone is out here doing the math like "Well, if it hits all the tiers, that's four figures at $25 a piece so your only paying $$ for the vehicle."
    Tiers should be above an beyond because the project already met it's necessary funding, but that's not the way it seems to me.

    • @Tarriq
      @Tarriq Před rokem

      The missing point is that they budget to make a certain amount of products for each cost and those extra tiers mean that they are keeping their profits to cost ratio.
      If they don’t make the extra tiers then they also aren’t making x amount of the product so they keep profit ratio

    “Next order of business: Marketing department. Yes…or no.” - Rigfort
    As adult collectors, we enjoy acting like children, not being treated like children. That’s what rubbed me the wrong way (in addition to the price) about the Engine of Vengeance. “We have some really fun prizes! If you don’t stay until the end, you’ll miss out.” Sorry, Hasbro. You can’t be needy if you’re gonna be greedy!
    My solution would be to reveal all of the tiers and stretch goals up front. I don’t disagree with you in principle. The stretch goals should be the icing on the cake, but given what cakes and icing cost these days, I think you have to let the customer know what the menu options are when they walk in the door.
    I don’t think that would have saved the Engine of Vengeance though, because they weren’t giving us the Goblin Queen and Hellstrom we really wanted. Goblin Queen in her accurate costume (or lack thereof) and classic Hellstrom along with Mephisto? I would have signed up so fast it would make your head spin.

  • @robertsinfiniterealms1308

    Great video Nerdy. So much m going to point out you’re on target with your marketing assumption. Before I came back to Action Figures I got into a brief stint with board games and miniature war games and one of the biggest companies in that market use crowdfunding for almost everything (CMON is the name) and they literally pace out extra game pieces and exclusives as stretch goals throughout the campaign (and they are great at estimating what kind of banking they will get) and use that as a way to keep talking and hyping the campaign. The two best examples I’ve seen are their masters of the universe board game and Marvel Zombiecide where they had new reveals everyday and then stretch goals too. They’d also reveal expansions to the core games etc. as they went. Now that’s not practical for a Haslab or Mattel crowdfund but I see similar tactics being used. It’s like they read from the same script with names changed and don’t really know how to react when crowd isn’t on board.

    I agree on the tier system. I can't understand why Hasbro just didn't introduce all of the figures and include them in the $500 dollar price tag. Actually, it's close to $600 bucks once you factor in taxes and shipping. On the Razorcrest it eventually included Mando, but who cared because there was already a Mando released previously that would have fit in the ship anyway if you wanted to make it fit. I knew the ghost would back, but I'm still having my doubts on getting all of the figures because the bar was set too high.

    • @residentobi-wan3190
      @residentobi-wan3190 Před rokem

      @dadofducks Just remember that one of the reason that crowdfunds use the stretch goal model is that the profit margin of the company (Hasbro/Mattel/etc) goes up with the number of units, tiers are a way of returning some of those profits to the investors without adjusting the price. I only bring this up because something I don't often hear debated in the community is if maybe there are not enough stretch goals in current campaigns. After all Hasbro has been pretty guilty in a few campaigns of setting up three stretch goals and capping returns to investors and then blowing through the final goal by 5000 units. It would be great if the CZcamsrs and commentators who are pro-crowdfund would talk more about things like including Sabine and Chopper at say 20,000 and 22,000, even if those numbers seem unlikely, there really shouldn't be a moment in the campaign when the manufacture can cap returns to investors and begin pocketing all of the increases to the profit margin.

  • @anthonynazzal1958
    @anthonynazzal1958 Před rokem +3

    Stretch goals need to be spaced out logically for what they are.
    Take the ghost and each additional figure (which should have all been included to begin with imo) are spaced out 3000 orders apart. That’s insane.
    If it were 1000 apart, I’m sure it would hit each one, but the overall buy in for a figure (that, let’s be real here, hasbro WILL make at some point in the mainline) isn’t an incentive.
    Perhaps instead of one figure being spaced out like they are, every 3000 could unlock a “crew” or group of supporting figures
    Say at 3000, the first tier is the whole crew as a set, at the next 3000, you get some of the other characters from the show together like vizago, hondo, puffer pig, the imperial droid that defected, agent kallus, gov price etc etc
    There were enough established characters in the show to do this for at least 3-4 tiers

    I think the Sail Barge is worth 4-6 times what it cost not just because of the nostalgia appeal but also because it was the first Haslab and many people myself included didn't know about it. Other people might have been hesitant of what you were actually going to get and how long it would take. Also, at that time $500 seemed like a lot of money for a toy now it's not that crazy. At the time the Sail Barge came out I was collecting sporadically and didn't even know about Haslab and I wasn't watching any toy youtube channels or FB, IG pages. I was just collecting on my own but I wasn't in the social media loop. I think they should re-release the Sail Barge as a one time "only because it was the first Haslab" deal.

  • @burlyjer
    @burlyjer Před rokem

    The thing I wish I could impart in some people is… if you think the value is there with all the stretch goals, don’t wait to put in your pledge. The stretch goals don’t come unless people pledge and build those numbers. Waiting to see if you get all the stuff before chipping in makes no sense when 1) if everyone did that no goals would ever be met, and 2) there is literally zero risk to pledge early. If the campaign ends and the stuff you wanted didn’t unlock you have a full day to cancel before you are even charged, and something like a full 3 weeks or so to cancel and get a refund if you wait and do get charged. The earlier people pledge the sooner the stuff unlocks… but if for some reason the numbers aren’t met, the cancel button is super easy to access from your acct page.
    Obviously this doesn’t apply if you didn’t think the value will be there even with the goals met, or you just haven’t fully decided yet.

    As someone that enjoys marketing and did their capstone or hasbro action figure marketing and pricing, I completely agree. Hasbro needs to either get rid of the stretch goals or find a better way to market their haslabs. In my report, I suggested they have the 3 tiers instead of stretch goals. With 3 tiers you can do a base, deluxe and whatever comes after deluxe. So If someone just wanted say the rancor, boom there you go. But if you just wanted the keeper, guard and Luke to come with it, you just pay the whatever X amount is for the next tier. And the next tier can include everything from the last plus a display back drop that’s not cut outs with the door to place the keeper and such. I’d also suggest hasbro do polls more often and surveys of what ppl want next for haslabs instead of just picking what they think everyone wants. They have done a good job with gi Joe haslabs but that’s also due to popularity and it’s relatively new addition to hasbros line up so they really can’t mess up on having a hiss tank and helicopter as their first haslabs.

The tiers should have been something like, a white and dark Loth wolf and 2 part mural. I’m still on the fence too, but I highly doubt we’ll see Chopper and Sabine on the mural cardbacks and they will not sell them separately if the 17k isn’t hit. They mentioned that the Luke from the Rancor will never be sold.

    I think to be truly successful as messaging campaigns, crowdfund projects need to move toward treating the investors as if they are actually investors, rather than customers. Which is why I would make the early bird special on these projects be that the early investors, those that reach the initial funding goal, get to determine the order of the stretch goals through a registered poll. That would mean that some form of public sentiment would select the initially included figure and could guarantee that the fanbase receives what is presumably the most desired stretch goal, and the backer would likely be left with the feeling that investing in a crowdfund is distinctly different than buying something at retail.

    The only two Haslabs I kept track of were the Sentinel and the Ghost Rider car.
    From my pov, the reason one was successful and one was a failure is that the price of entry was worth it without the stretch goals included for the Sentinel and the price of the Ghost Rider car was for the entire package, including stretch goals.

    I've been saying that the early bird is a campaign killer (if it doesn't unlock) since the EOV, so I completely agree BN. However there is something to be said with unlocks helping to maintain momentum throughout the campaign versus one giant push at the beginning. People like the excitement and anticipation when unlocks are unveiled but what's unveiled needs to feel worth it. That's where Haslab's struggle. The secrecy is fine but because the unlocks can't be so integral that not having it causes consternation, what they unveil is a tightrope. Glenda, I'm looking at you girl. Great topic BTW

  • @joephuz1
    @joephuz1 Před rokem

    I would have them include everything that “would” be as a stretch goal - at the price it would cost for the initial backing - but the stretch goals are actually discounts on the price. So it’s basically the same for hasbro because currently they end up giving us more for the same price anyway, this way we get the same for less and it ensures we actually get what we want. I was so close to backing out if we didn’t get Zeb and Kanan. For example the initial backing might be like $560, but each stretch goal reduces 20$, so if all tiers are met the price ends up 500 for everything just like it is now.

    I have 2 main issues with Haslab/crowdfunding projects at the moment:
    1. I do not like that we are at a place now where the unlock tiers are expected to be figures. I believe that unlock tiers should be specific to that item. I.E. energy effects, additional hands, weapons, heads, etc.
    2. I really don't like that if a crowdfunding fails, then we lose all chances to ever get that item or those add-on figures.
    My issue with packing in additional figures is that 99% of the figures would sell just fine by themselves, but now they are locked into a huge investment. For people that want Silver Surfer, or want to army build characters like Bastion or Nightforce Ripcord, well now it just severely limits your options to get multiples or even one. I keep seeing the buzz about Giant Man and how the tiers should be characters like Wasp, Yellow Jacket, or Goliath. Are collectors nut?! Why are we hoping that these crucial characters that we've been waiting years for (that would sell perfectly fine on their own) should be included in a $500 project. In my opinion, accessories for Haslabs should be items that are specific to that main item that we will only ever be able to get as part of that project. Ex: because the Sentinel didn't come with hand blasts or eye blasts, we will never now be able to get those. What we got was Bastion instead, which again could have been released at any other time in a wave.
    Which brings me to me next big issue, that if project fails then are we never getting that figure again? Did we lose our chance to get Robbie Reyes, Mephisto, or Goblin Queen? Or what about projects that luckily succeeded, but could have also failed. Does that mean if the Dragonfly failed then we would never have gotten Will Bill or Ripcord (in the beautiful Nightforce colorway)?
    I get that fans like to see figures because we understand the value of them and so we can mentally include that value into the price of the total package, but we really need to get away from that. I really like Big Nerdy's idea, and I think it would be better. It's worth a shot, at least

      In the case of Haslab. Hasbro and the licensor sets the rules. There is absolutely 0 reason why any figure released in a Haslab can't be offered in some other way.
      There is no contract with the backers that says they can't. The lack of opportunity would be completely on Hasbro(and the Licensor).
      There is no losing our chance as again Hasbro sets the terms of engagement. The question is if it profitable to release these figures a different way?
      What I would prefer is if they included more unique looks so that they can release a normal version and not "devalue" the mass produced figure from the Haslab.
      Silver Surfer for example was already release twice before. The one from the Haslab isn't even pinless. There is no reason to believe Silver Surfer is now locked behind the Haslab and they'll never make another.

Re the Ghost, I’m NOT backing it because 1), I have no nostalgia/connection with the ship at all, 2) I don’t even like the design of the ship, 3) it’s frigging huge and will be difficult to display or even hide away when my kids aren’t playing with it, and finally, 4) $500 ain’t cheap for something I’m not in love with. I backed Victory Saber and Deathsaurus even though I never saw Transformers Victory because the prices were far more reasonable and the designs at least looked cool independent of the show. I’m glad the Ghost is already funded for those who grew up watching Rebels, but this isn’t a HasLab I feel like I’m personally missing out on.

    I think the idea of not making stretch goals other figures and instead making them additions to the "complete package" is solid, but i also think it depends on the project.
    Galactus, to me is pretty much complete as a concept with just him and the Silver Surfer, the other heralds are just icing on the cake so they work as stretch goals. RotJ Luke feels like he should be part of the package, so he shouldnt be a stretch goal. With Mephisto, hes someone that i really want, but theoretically id be fine without him in the package if they released him later, same with the Ghost and the Rebels Crew.
    I think Hasbro does need to rework what gets included in the box standard and what works as a stretch goal.

    I say this…
    Give the public a choice from three. Fan vote it. Then move ahead with that one. Say that in three months money will be collected. Release the price for that package.
    The main thing and figures. All in.
    Puts people in charge and to budget. And hasbro know roughly how many will sell a lot earlier.
    Then stretch goals should be effects, more heads and accessories. Soft goods etc. those can also be sold at retail later if there’s any left.

    There should be some sort of multiple display options too. Sentinel, Galactus, HISS, etc were all items that included extras where it incentivized you into buying more. Even WWE New Gen gave you wrestler & announcer Macho plus ring skirts. Perhaps if WCW Nitro included nWo conversion pieces & Rick Steiner with alt heads to make him Papa Pump or Steiner Bros it woulda motivated those who were excited about to back more than one.

    The only Haslab I've bought so far is Galactus. I immediately saw the value even before the stretch goals, so I was all in. The tiers actually felt like a bonus. I would have been the same way with the Sentinel the year before, but I wasn't that big of a collector at the time. I don't think I even knew about it. The ghost rider Haslab didn't interest me at all until they added Mephisto and Madeline Pryor, but I wasn't about to spend the money simply for 2 figures.

    Hi Big Nerdy, nice video, but I completely disagree on your appreciation that the prices thses companies ares asking for these is fair. Just look at what smaller companies like Valaverse or Ramen Toys have been able to offer in regards of size vs. pricing. And these companies are just a small fraction of the size Hasbro/Mattel are, which also means that the latter will get much better deals from the factories that make these since their order size per SKU is way bigger in general.
    Aside from that, I think the rest of the video is on point. Keep up the great work and hope your ankle is doing better!

    Hasbro kind of did this with Giant Man. They dropped any (real) stretch goals and made the price only $200. Yeah, technically the zombie faceplate and Skrull head are stretch goals, but they are not figures and I don't think people care too much about those. They may even have done that to wean people off of the tier system and next time there will be none at all. I didn't back Giant Man, not because it isn't a great offer or doesn't look great, but I was just never crazy about the concept of Giant Man, I prefer Ant-Man in my Avengers display and because I already backed the Dragonfly AND the Ghost.

    They need to do a low buy in teir and then every unlock is an add-on. So if you dont want the giant expensive piece you can still support the project and help add to the total unlock goal. Then at the end when everything is unlock they total price for all in should be the better deal and only $30 more. Or something close to that. But Hasbro is greedy so nothing will change.

  • @christopherbandish6060

    I think Hasbro/Mattel need to reevaluate what their crowd funding models are trying to be. To them a dream project = a big toy. That is not always the case. It should be something we want but never though possible and that does not always mean something large. Maybe it does but eventually collectors are going to stop backing because we’re going to run out of room. Personally
    I don’t have space for anything they’re making. Perhaps they should vary between the big projects and maybe something smaller but way plused up. I once said somewhere they should do a Spiderman No Way Home boxset but not just repainted and reused bucks. They should use new tooling, lots of extra paint apps, figure stands, soft goods, higher quality plastic and basically just a really extra high quality Marvel Legend set. It doesn’t have to be $500 or the size of a toddler to be a dream project.

      The two recent Transformers Haslabs are a great example of that, actually. They’re not huge, but have a lot of engineering and parts put into them. The reason they’re not retail releases is because of obscurity and complexity, not just size. And they were both reasonably priced at just $180.

    The crew should be included with the Ghost for the price shown as wothout the crew, it's kind of pointless. We all know the price includes the tiers, so if something backs, but not with all of the tiers, the only people missing out is us. Ships should come with their crew, vehicles should come with their drivers, and so on. Especially since we know that they will re-release the Ghost crew with animation accurate colors, and heads, later on. Same bodies. Different heads and paint apps. The problem with Haslabs is that buying a Sail Barge was an experience. We got behind the scenes of the process, a book, Email updates about every month etc. It's almost as if Hasbro cared about it. Haslab has devolved into " Hey remember that thing you paid for months ago? We need you to confirm your address." mixed with the shotgun approach. They're just not special anymore and I'd wager at least 30% of the backers are just resellers which is why the price remains high on the barge, what they actually missed out on, and the rest are now what they refuse to miss out on, FOMO. I couldn't be less interested in the Fanfic Aluminum Falcon they're selling. I expect to be pushing them out of the way at toy shows.

  • @joseenriqueherrera9056

    Okay, if I order one ship, that counts me as 1 single backer of the proyect, right? So, what about if I decide to order 2 or 3 pieces, I'm still counting as 1 backer? I mean, a lot of people order more than one just to make some profit in the coming years when collectors will be desperate to get one of those irreplaceable ships or robots or whatever. That's my real concern in this situation: could be that Habro already surpassed the 17,000 goal just because of those extra pieces ordered. Does anyone knows about this situation? How do they count the backers?

    They are definitely overpriced as Hasbro pre-bake tier costs into the initial asking price, so charge it even if tiers are not met (or wanted!).
    This is backwards to how crowdfunds usually operate. The asking price is for the base product only, if it keeps exceeding over the initial goal tiers are added for free, with everyone paying only the initial price still.
    Hasbro method is why Hellcharger failed, they were asking for the cost of Mephisto, Pryor and whoever else when they weren't even revealed or on offer yet. When it became clear the tiers weren't gonna get met the numbers started dropping as nobody wanted to pay for tiers not included.
