The early fan-fiction stories can be traced back to 1893, when readers were furious that Arthur Conan Doyle killed off Sherlock Holmes. Holmes was battling Prof. Moriarty in "The Final Problem" and fell to his death. (Temporarily, as it turns out) So the early fan clubs began writing their own alternate stories where Holmes faked his death and lived. When Doyle brought Holmes back in " The Empty House" in 1903, he took this idea from the fans to reveal Holmes did fake his death.

Similar, though maybe not classified as fan fiction by stricter definitions, is the story of Don Quixote.
The author wrote the first book, but didn't think it was a great work so put a sequel in the back burner while writing/ doing other jobs. A publisher and writer seeing money left on the table wrote their own un-offical sequel that was so terrible it forced the author to stop what he was doing, write the sequel, and end the story so no one can do something like that again.

It was disappointing the whole book isn't in color, no doubt due to the expense, but I appreciated having more pages with most in black in white, than fewer all in color. HOWEVER, there was no excuse for printing the Silver Age Joker & Luthor team up story in color.... except for the last two pages, suddenly in black & white...! Very jarring. I grant you this, if your bar is so low you already praise BAD SEQUELS, then fan-made sequels blend right in and those fan fics can be equally "good". They make you remember the previous works being good, without that pesky "notice something new with every re-read" effect. Just notice something OLD for the first time, with "but this time we made it with Velma as Seinfeld".
Or it can spark fandom like The sorrows of Young Werther that's all really just about the fans themselves, navel gazing. Insistence that calling themselves fans or buying the IP makes them know better.

I'd note that 'Con's and fan-fic existed before the 60's or TOS. They were based around written SF, and they grew to include SF films and yes, cos play (Forrest Ackerman, go dig through his life). That then went and morphed as Comics and TV took precedence and then it all split into separate threads. TV, Movies and Comics became to famous Con's, Books became a seperate line, although they do have the Hugo awards for DILM & TV stories. So the 60's is where it went big, but they were around a couple of decades before then. Just a younger less sophisticated version.

Visually interesting. They even include dialogue and clue the reader into the stories contained within. You got two to three tales here. Not just one continued mess, like today's soap operas. And they had happy endings and defended the sanctity of marriage. No horsing around. Bruce Wayne and family were honorable people. What creative people they had back then? And they remembered that younger viewers were impressionable.

While I have to, as always, dispute that Wertham had anything to do with shelving Selina and creating Kathy and Betty, the most glaring thing about the "II" stories is the red-headed Bruce Jr. Was Alfred unaware of genetics? Able to honor Kathy, yet subtly accuse her of infidelity? Clearly, red-headed Junior is seen in and out of costume that way. An interesting possibility is the red-headed son of two brunettes, Dick Tracy's Junior, was an influence, who also, through his marriage to science fiction-based Moon Maid, influenced Dick and Starfire.

That future Batsuit reminds me of a Batman Returns toy I had when I was a kid... Almost identical, actually. I think it came with a penguin with a rocket launcher?

Batman visit retired Joker and having him not approve of the new young Joker while secretly supporting him reminded me so much of the Flash TV show Trickster. With Hamil's Trickster not approving of the new young Trickster only to be supporting him from in prison. I doubt this comic inspired the show idea but just a fun connection I made

Have you read John Byrne's Superman & Batman: Generations? It used a lot of elements from these stories.

Part of me wishes Dick and Damian wore the Batman and Robin II outfits in the episode. I'm kind of surprised they aren't here tbh, they're just the kind of silly that TBATB loved.

Hello ! I have find another reference coming from The Knights of Tomorrow ! The Old Joker comes from the Justice Society of America Annual #1 (2008) of Geoff Johns and Fernando Pasarin. In this comics Joker from Earth 2 is old, in a wheelchair with balloons on it, exactly like in the episode of BTBATB forementionned, hope you'll see it ! Have a good day ! :D

Made me wonder if Lee Falks The Phantom had numbers on his chest to show which incarnationg he was... but I guess that would spoil the illusion that he lives forever 🙂

Regarding Joker's sons, I always prefer the one from Generations, where it turns out to be just Joker wearing one of those young self masks from back to the future 2.

Have to recommend the ElseWorlds Superman & Batman: Generations 1 & 2 (1999 & 2001) by John Byrne. They’re very much in the spirit of those Batman stories,

This opens up the possibility that all the comics we read are Alfred's delluded imagination.
