Of all the CZcams gear geek dudes Matt is one of if not the best photographer.
Thanks, I’m not the best presenter for sure so at least I can try with the photos!
Great photos Matt! Glad you are in a warmer climate !
Thank you! Only 4 days and it was cold but sunny. I'm happy to wear more clothes and get nice light!
Thanks for the review Matt, looking forward to part two. I feel like your review is the most informative yet, your style of shooting also more closely resembles my own and you had a great mix of people and street/architecture showing the lens off. The more I see from the Thypoch lenses the more at ease I feel about having ordered the 28mm.
Thanks Arron! Part 2 will be the info video but this one hopefully gives people an idea of what it can do for real world use.
Great video, as always!! Great shots and explanations, and love to see my home town in your photos!! ❤
Thanks Victor!
Enjoyable to appreciate the photographs shot with the Simera 35mm in this way.😍
Thanks! Full detailed review out soon 🙌🏻
Great vid, great pics Matt 👍
Thank you!
As always I really enjoy your videos. I also enjoyed the photos you showed (very much)! BTW I like your photos on flat light a bit better. What ever, really nice work!!!!
Thanks Steve! The flat light photos might have been technically better as I had spend 2 days there so was starting to improve.
28/50 is the goat combo, of course! Nice shots, Matt
Yes I’m more 28/50 I think. Thanks!
My 2- lens kit as well.
I always enjoy seeing what your eye sees from wherever you are. I know you shoot a lot so your chances of hits are higher but you do have that great eye as it pays the rent and puts food on the table. That 35 looks good. I prefer 50's, probably out of habit. And maybe I should shoot more with 35's. but the Bertele, Amotal and a sweet KMZ Jupiter 8 hold my attention. Thanks for another one of your great videos.
Thanks Sandy! Yes I missed my 50s for the portraits!
Great review Matt and great images as always! Arguably, you should consider using more of the 'flat light' you mentioned as they're some of the best ones I've seen from the City of Arts :) Well done! Also great to see you with the M10 more and more; I'm sure others can agree your videos took a different route we're all thoroughly enjoying! I can't wait till part two as I've got the Ultron VM II (Voigtlander 35mm f2, of course) and I've been really impressed by the Simera 35 from other early reviews. Scratching my head a bit whether it'd be worth perhaps swapping one for the other for the extra stop of light and other characteristics, if notable. Again though, great review and don't let us wait for too long ;)
Thanks Michael, very kind! Yes I will start the pixel peeping tomorrow in preparation for the part 2 video!
enjoyed the street images around 3:26. nice backlighting with a bit of flare.
Thanks Stuart! Yes the light was great.
Thank you for this very compelling review. I think your photos -- especially the landscape/street shots -- are particularly nice in this video, which aside from the photographer, the location, the light, and the camera, attests to the quality of this lens. I look forward to hearing your thoughts comparing this to the collapsible Light Lens Lab 35mm f2. On a historical note, the groovy depth of field scale looks to be borrowed from the Kern-Switar 50mm f1.9 lens for Alpa cameras (and perhaps other mounts as well) from around 60 years ago. (Those are also very nice vintage lenses for image quality.)
Thanks! Yes others have mentioned the 50mm 1.9 Alpa lenses too. Good knowledge! I'll show a picture in part 2.
Wow Matt besides your stunning model photos 09:39 .... you have such an amount of nicest urban and street pictures in this video and do not even talk about it.... many others who claim to have the photographic wisdom on other channels should look at it.... and shure it is not the lens cause you can do with every old piece of glas!!
Thank you. Yes some locations work for me when it comes to street stuff. I just need to feel inspired!
Awesome & Thanks :)
Thanks!
When I was in Tokyo in December, the winter light was so good I even scheduled a model shoot close to mid day!
Speaking of Tokyo, my Nokton Classic 35mm 1.4 SC became loose from a month of travel, I was just trying to tighten the lens back up through disassembly, but it is not out of calibration. So, I started looking for an alternative compact 35mm before I sent my beloved Nokton to service. This is obviously a bit bigger than the Voiglander, but you caught my attention with that 0.45m minimum focus and 14-blade aperture! I often think Cron and Lux are too clean, but this looks welcoming with generous flare, with good sharpness and an attractive price tag, but best yet, a DoF scale to die for!
Thanks Rex, yes this lens has a lot of plus points!
I "almost" bought one after seeing the video from B&H, but it is currently only available in silver. I think I will be easier to convince once the black paint is available!
Yesss ... please part 2 🙂
Great images wth this Thypoc ...
I'd love to see this one compare to the Ultron 35mm 1,7????
So as soon as I'll have my Thypoc 35mm f1,4 I 'll be able to tel you ... ahahaha
Thanks Grom! I can compare to the f2 :)
Thanks for this. Watched most if not all of the reviews on this lens and they are not as informative as this one. Definitely an interesting lens and at the price point that’s also attractive compared to the Leica equiv.
Never used a Summilux only cron’s and am contemplating this or a used pre fle lux
Thanks, part 2 will include a lot more info but this shows real world use photos to hopefully inspire people. I would expect the Pre Lux FLE to perhaps be slightly softer with more glow but can't confirm.
Nice1 Matt, liked the b&w photos from the science park towards the end of the video. Hoping to go there in spring. 35mm is not for me, waiting for you to review the new cv 28mm f1.5. Although, I'm very happy with the f2 ultron ii.
Thanks! Me too. Yes I have TWO new 28s coming for you so stay tuned! :)
Gotta say... Some of those "flat boring light" shots are pretty awesome.......
Thanks Timothy, I think the light made me work harder and as a result I had to get more creative. I liked some of them too but it is an easy place to shoot.
Hey .. low hanging fruit or not... they're still great shots. @@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
Hey Matt. I was hoping you would get your hands on one of these now that I have the SL2-S. Currently using the CV35 1.4 Nokton MC, as the only M lens left after selling my M10-R and although I quite like it it would be good to see your part II video as always.
Thanks Dick and good to hear from you. This should beat the Nokton 1.4 at everything except size, weight, price from owning both lenses.
Excellent review and video Matt, loved it all, details on lens and shoot specifics, whether model or street photography all expertly presented here. Valencia looks gorgeous, have been all over Spain but Valencia has not been on that list (Most recently in Sevilla which i love).
On a funny note, i thought your second model was Spanish, but i heard her speak Russian when she told you to hold the jacket 😊. Not an original Russian speaker here, but i married one.
Thanks! Yes a Russian speaking Ukrainian sadly displaced by the war. Lovely girl
Thanks, Matt! For me it's between this and the Light Lens Lab 35mm F1.4 currently in development.
Thanks Greg, it's a bit too early to tell for the LLL but this one performs pretty well!
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom , Oh if only it had a focus tab! But I guess with that 1.4 aperture the focus ring may works better for critical focus. What do you think?
Thanks for the video! To my eyes the lens didn't really wow me - particularly I don't think it handled high contrast scenes well - it seemed to come out quite harsh looking in bright light and to my eyes I prefer the colors of the summilux or nokton to this. Good to know what's out there though!
Thanks Peter! They say the 28mm is the best so looking forward to reviewing that soon!
Thank you for the review, any chance you will test the simera 28mm 1.4 as well?
Thanks and yes absolutely! It’s due out tomorrow so I hope to get a copy in the post soon to test
Interesting video. Looks like a blend between modern sharpness and vintage flare, lol. I’m guessing there is no detente when you reach the end of rangefinder coupling?
Thanks, there is actually so that beats all Voigtlander lenses. I mention it in part 2
The pics look great. Waiting for their 50mm and 90mm interpretations hopefully with less flare :)
Thanks Thomas!
At this rate, this black M10 😊will be a Chrome one
Haha I use my gear for sure so I didn't mind buying one looking a bit marked.
Hi thank you very much, please let me know when you will be testing the new Voigtlander Nokton 28mm F1.5 lens. I do thank you very much because I did get the Voigtlander 35mm F1.2 III so I am very happy.
Thanks, I'm due to get the Nokton 25mm soonish I'm told so stay tuned!
You enjoyed my city ❤
Thanks, yes great city!
Who needs food ; when you have Light , that is our food !!
Exactly haha
Great shots Matt. Beautiful there .
Maybe you have read it already but 22 March SL3 launch. 60 mp same as M11 Q3 body smaller than SL2 🎉 Read more on Leica rumors.
Thanks for sharing
Thanks Rob! Thanks for SL3 info too. Sooner than I expected!
Have you tried shooting using zone focus with the depth of field scale? I have tried using two different copies of this lens with the same results. One end of the scale, the near end, is in focus. The far end isn't. I'm curious to find out if you encountered the same issue. Infinity is in focus only when you focus at infinity not when you put infinity at the end of the DOF scale on the lens. It's a wonderful lens that does everything you already said it does.
Thanks, I’ll try that and share in part 2
Would be nice to see the 28mm vs the 35mm versions on the SL2 with adapter
I can do a few 28 vs 35 comparison photos but I don’t own the SL2
Thanks for all the hard work on this! Seeing all those flares did somewhat temper my interest in these lenses, at least until we can see how they stack up to the two similarly-priced elephants in the room: the new 28/1.5 and new-ish 35/1.5 Cosina Voigtlander Noktons.
Incidentally, I suspect the maker wants us all saying “Thy-poc”, not “Ty-poc.” I read on Thypoc's official Instagram that they coined the name from “thy” as the archaic form of “your” (as in “thy kingdom come, thy will be done”) and “epoch,” as in a memorable period of history, to connote the idea that these lenses are made for documenting your (thy) personal epoch. But suit thine own self! It seems a little silly to me, but when you come right down to it, “Kodak” and “Nikon” probably seemed silly when first coined…
Thanks James. Yes I need to mention the naming in part 2 👍🏻
@1:42 is that the thypoch in her hand ? Lovely shots in Valencia - really good and lots of opportunities as well. The model shoot is also a lot of fun ❤
Thanks yes a model had my Thypoch setup during the video as I was photographing her with my camera / letting her see the world through an M!
Got a 40 Summicorn-C on my M3. (to your 28 v 35 v 50 question)
Nice! If you ever want something more modern but still small look at the 40mm Heliar. I use that
Please can you show us how to you store your M mount lens. I’ve started a M mount lens collection and thinking to in invest in a dry cabinet or maybe a peli case. I’d love to hear your thoughts.
I use a shelf. You can use whatever works best for you. Dry cabinets are a must in humid countries.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Any chance of you can do a review of Zeiss 21mm f/4.5 ZM lens for LEICA M10/M11?
I love that you have an M10 now. It makes your reviews even more useful, now. I mean, say least to me personally, lol.
Ha thanks. I got there eventually! More M10 stuff to come!
Ha, same here. Recently bought an M10.
Matt reviews and knowledge where rarely camera based. If you couldn’t extrapolate photography information from a lens that is an M mount dont think him getting an M10 is ever going to resonate. The camera doesn’t make his knowledge relate or not.
@@zetaphotography6548He and I both very recently having purchased M10s adds interest for me. I don’t need someone telling me how I should feel.
@@zetaphotography6548 thanks. I know what they mean. I might just comment on little quirks like needing a ND filter if using a M camera but yes the rest of the lens info can be applied to any camera setup.
Awesome review! Looks great! do you know how does this new lens compare with the Voigtlander 35mm f1.5 Asph?
Thanks! I don’t. I’ve not tried the 1.5 yet.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaComu did a Review on it 😅
@@Julienazamosa I think I’m losing it lol. I must have made that while sleeping. Sorry I forget this lens exists as it doesn’t get mentioned too often
You used various lenses on the M10. Presumably, most of these lenses are not 6-bit coded. What method do you use to keep track of which image goes with which lens? Paper and pencil or something more high tech?
More low tech. I photo my hand when I change lens and make note on iPhone. It’s fine unless on a model shoot and change lens in the moment
Do you like this over the VL Nokton Classic MC 35 F1.4
The Nokton gives the softer vintage look and is smaller. This is more corrected.
I noticed many photos with vignette...is that lens vignette or did you add in post...(from previous videos I remember that you tend to add vignette in post).
Hi Jay, yes I added it. In part 2 you'll see the vignetting is pretty minimal for a fast lens.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom thanks Matt...
I enjoy your videos and appreciate your opinions and viewpoint!
i notice this lens has strong green color cast, is it the preset or come with the lens
Please watch part 2, the green is just a look from one of the draft presets
compare to nokton 35mm f1.5? thinking to shift to thypoch though...
Yes the Nokton 1.5 didn't impress me so I skipped that one.
😊
Thanks!
How are you liking the M10 now?
Loving it to the most part. Lots more M10 videos to come but side tracked with new lens releases / new to me film cameras!
Presets for capture one availble?
Sadly not. I’ve never used Capture One
Are you interested in the new Voigtlander 28mm F1.5 lens?
Yes I'm waiting to receive a copy of the lens to make a video, Stay tuned!
Not your fault lol. But the iPhone alarm sound gave me a mild panic. My personal phone is always on vibrate, and my work phone is an iPhone. I thought someone was calling at 9pm which usually means an emergency... 😅😅 oh boy...
Oh no, sorry about that!
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom No worries. Great work by the way!
This or the Voigtländer 35 1.2? 🤔
Wait for part 2 .. I'm not sure myself yet
Because we need another manufacturer making M mount lenses, there’s just not enough of them 😂
If companies decide to make great performing lenses for our cameras then more choice for us!
Fair enough if it’s a decent lens but recently we’ve been drowning in a sea of optically inferior “fast” lenses the size and weight of a small dustbin who’s only selling point is their low cost.
lol she said - "grab it" on 8:58
Ha thanks! Yes we communicated 40% English/ 60% body language.. and the Spanish model, 95% body language!
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom that's amazing :)
How does this compare to the TTartisan of the world?
I've not compared them directly yet, sorry. I think will be sharper than the 1.4 7A lens and I used to have that and less flare than the TTA 35 APO
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Alright! Thank you for the reply:) I still have the 7artisans I think. It's fairly sharp.
As soon as I saw the flare I quit so I didn't last long
If you don’t shoot at the sun you’ll be fine
I so often do , TBH I'm doing ok with the canon 50 - 1.8 LTM with colour filters for landscape , spot metered for highest value then shifted to zone 8 ,delta 400 at 800 , but Im looking for a modern coated 50 , Im thinking the voigtlander 50 APO would take the abuse I give them when I point into the light ?@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
I thought you sold all your Leica gear, didn't you make a video about it 10 months ago? Titled "Sold all my Leica gear" or something.
Thanks, yes that video confused a lot of people. The video showed me selling I think 4 Leica lenses (and replacing with Voigtlander) but it was a small fraction of the lenses I own and use and I still have all Leica cameras, everything from 1931 model to the M10 and all systems; III, M, R, CL + Digital CL, M, SL, Q
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Glad you still use Leica! Keep up the great work!
35mm all the way since the 80's here ! 50mm or nifty-fifty is too boring, too ordinary, and not wide enough for my needs. I shoot 35mm, #2 place is 40mm. Rest here & there sometimes with zooms.
I lived through the 80s but I'm a bit behind you! Yes many love 35mm.. I still struggle ha. (40mm is great on my 1931 Barnack!)
35-40… that’s living life on the edge.
A nifty fifty is a horrible 50 to base 40 years of boring. Try a fast, high quality 50, 1.1 to 1.4, shoot wide open and please reevaluate. Have you gone as wild as a 28?
50's are boring. I only like my 50/1.7 Planar, bc of the microcontrast & pop. And i do have serveral F1.4 also...F1.2 or faster is for posers, one does always stop down. Even with avialable light here & there. 35/40 is perfect. Never need a 50 seriously.@@magiccarpetrider4594
she cleaned your lens on her leggings! 🙄
Ah no wonder I never need to clean them haha
Thanks Matt for the video. herc_healer......
