      This is an Awesome video Dr. Berry !! You make me sooo Happy telling people this diet can be done without spending Mega bucks on food items .. Not sure if you have heard about Butter Bob Briggs channel . I found him when I started my Keto journey 3 years ago and he was also helping people on a budget or low income . I'm Healthier than I have been in 10 years - 50 pounds lighter without always buying $ 50.00 pieces of grass fed meats . etc ....Far as I'm concerned I think we are only getting half truths about those foods - Grass fed - pasture raised - wild caught and Organic . Sure they stick a sign on them , but who really knows unless you can see where that food comes from ?

      You can also cut them up, dip in water with lemon juice (so they don't turn brown & yucky looking) then freeze the chunks. They freeze very well. They often run about $2.50 each where I am, sometimes more. Winter is long where I live so many months without local veg. Expensive for spinach etc too.

      The Keto diet is a high fat, low carb diet. I tend to think of it more of a lifestyle choice and not a diet. This is not something that I do for a short time to accomplish a goal. It's something that is part of my life now. I have found recently that too many proteins are also a problem. It increases my blood sugar past the point of where I want it (Just over 100). But mainly, I am on an 18/6 plan ... I fast from about 6:00pm to 12:00pm the next day. I usually have a cup of bullet proof coffee in the morning which does not break my fast. It includes 1 tbs butter, 1 tbs coconut oil and whole cream. Usually my lunch (is more like breakfast) 2 strips of bacon and 2-3 eggs. Then I do dinner (before 6:00pm) that includes about 6 oz of meat and lot of veggies such as broccoli, cauliflower, brussels sprouts and, kale, muchrooms or other low carb veggies. To date, (after 2 months). I've lost 22 lbs, my waist has reduced 3", my pant size down 2, my blood sugar ranges from 70 - 95 either fasting or 1 hour a meal. It's the easiest thing I've ever done to lose weight. I feel great, my energy is extremely high, and my stats are doing well. I'm looking forward to my annual checkup to see how my labs are doing.

  • @panpiper
    @panpiper Před 5 lety +133

    I've been aware of the ketogenic diet for several years, and persuaded enough that I would have adopted it were it possible. However everything I read, every video I watched, all of them said that I absolutely had to eat organic everything, grass fed beef, pastured chicken, etc., etc.. I looked for the cheapest sources I could find for those organic options and crunched the numbers. I would have to spend literally four times my food budget to make the change. If I started keto, I would have to spend my rent money on food. And so for years, I continued to eat a high carb diet, convinced that keto was only for rich people. All those people (excuse me, but frankly assholes) who basically lied to me, seriously harmed my health by feeding me their bullshit bias.
    I don't remember who clued me in. It might well have been Dr. Berry. Around nine months ago I discovered that the 'organic' mantra was optional, that keto would work just fine with the foods that I could actually afford. Since then I have gone 'cheap' keto with exactly what Dr. Berry recommends, chicken, eggs, etc., bought on special from my local supermarkets. In that time I have lost eight inches off my waist (5 more to go), and a myriad of health issues have vanished.
    I want to share a trick I use to keep my costs really low. Very importantly, I have a chest freezer. This allows me to stock a large amount of food. What I do is I watch the fliers of my local supermarkets, I check them every week. When I see a great special on something I actually use, I stock up. I buy at least enough to last until it next goes on an equal special. I do this especially with ground beef/pork, and chicken quarters (by far the cheapest option in my part of the world). I buy maybe a month's worth of eggs when there is a good special (they last longer than most would have you believe). I also keep about 120 eggs frozen as 'emergency' reserve (the eggs are cracked and beaten before being added to freezer bags). I also watch for specific frozen veggies like spinach (my favorite). I don't just do the stock up for three months using specials with food, but with anything I use regularly. This way I spend less than half the amount of money most do for their groceries.
    Oh, and having a three month supply of food and other consumables on hand helps placate my prepper urge.

    Avocados: buy on sale! Wash, cut in half, whack pit with a knife (and twist knife) to remove it. Scoop out, place face down on waxed or parchment paper, freeze, and when frozen put in a Ziploc bag. To thaw, place in a bowl and squeeze lemon all over to prevent it browning (if you care about it turning). Mash and add to salad or eat with veggies.
    Greens: Buy in bulk if cheaper, and freeze in smaller bags. (Wash first, of course, if not already washed.) Use in smoothies, soups, or skillet veggie dishes.

If that's what is needed to achieve health and weight loss, however, count me out. The truth is that stressing out over the quality of the food doesn't help weight loss goals.
    And the next time some chirpy keto guru says, "You can either give your money to the farmer or the doctor!"....grrrrrr!

Since going keto in 2018, our freezer always has a “bone bag” going- we toss all the chicken bones in it, as well as the parsley stems, celery trimmings, and carrot ends.. when we have enough, I toss it all in a big crock pot, leave it on low for a couple of days then jar up the strained broth..after all that slow cooking, the bones are soft enuf, that I put them in the food processor and make “Kitty pate”- my cat loves it!!!( I don’t salt the broth, or add any spices, so it’s better for the pets)... win win win..

    Lucky me..... I raise my own ducks, chickens, and geese. I have tons of eggs, tons of duck and chicken eggs, plus Lots of duck, geese, and to a lesser extent chicken in my freezer. If you have never experienced Goose Bacon (cold smoked goose breast) it is delicious and difficult to tell that it not pork belly. All of my livestock are organic and completely free range.
    I realize that generally speaking buying organic foods can be cost prohibitive but it is not necessarily healthy to eat eggs from factory farmed chickens. Those birds are Salmonella carriers because of their environment. They are also fed soy to force egg laying. I do not feed my birds soy and only organic corn. I raise my own meal worms and mix my own soy free organic layer feed. My ducks and chickens lay an average of 300 eggs per year from each hen. 15,000 eggs per year. I can only eat/use about 1500 eggs per year if I ate 4 eggs per day. So I sell my excess eggs. I only raise enough meat birds to feed myself or to trade for raw whole milk or some pastured pork, lamb, or beef. 60 goslings become fat and sassy in the Fall and give me about 400 lbs. of delicious very fatty meat plus a gigantic pile of bones for broth. If people have a yard they should buy a gosling or two each Spring. A breeding pair of French Toulouse geese will give you 16-20 goslings each Spring. Geese are primarily grass eaters. No specialty feed required except in the winter. If you put all of the goslings in the Freezer in the Fall. The yield should be at least 140 lbs. of really succulent organic meat, bones, and lots of really delicious fat.

I love that you reassure even those of us on a low/fixed income that we can do this too! We don't all have the means to eat the most expensive foods but if we can afford hotdogs, then we can eat that! I have lost over 100 lbs myself. Because of health issues and 3 surgeries in the 5 months, I've gained 15 lbs and now I'm on a mission to lose that plus a few more!

    I really enjoy listening to you, and I am trying the ketogenic diet. I love it, I am feeling so good. I am only six weeks into it and I am sure I could do this long term. I have been spending so much money with the dermatologist for hair loss with no improvement. Thanks to you I am going back to my Jamaican roots. I believe what you say. In my young days growing up in Jamaica I had such thick and beautiful hair. I remember my grandmother used to cook with coconut oil and also pork fat. Well I moved to the good old USA and thought I am living the healthy way, I was only 120lbs when I moved here. Now I was 174lbs when I started keto I am down to 166lbs, and hope to get to 140 good help me. There are so many videos and books on keto, so I am going to stop watching the others and stick with you because you make so much sense to me. Keep doing what you're doing. thanks

    Thank you, Dr. Berry! You’ve been a constant source of guidance and support in my two-year loss of 90 pounds and reversal of pre-diabetes. I have a rotation of inexpensive keto foods I fit in each week. Canned salmon, sardines, eggs five days a week, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, pecans, low carb yogurt (no added sugar)…I add cinnamon to the yogurt sometimes. Thomas DeLauer does a series of keto shop-along videos where he goes to Aldi, Walmart, dollar stores, et al. Thomas is very frugal and is upfront about not wanting to spend too much money.
