I am a Boomer . I am so glad I grew up to listen to the best songs of rock and pop in history. Nobody outdoes Bobby in this performance. He set The bar so high. I have never heard anyone equal it in any song. There are a lot that came close to the bar but None is better than Bobby. He earned the gold medal of all time for male singers.

I am also a Boomer and remember so clearly when the Righteous Brother first started performing. We only heard them on the radio at first and assumed they were gentlemen of color. Then, when the world saw them on television and in concert, everyone was amazed, and their music became known as blue eyed soul. We all get the good chills when they would sing. Bob Medley is still living, but Bobby passed way too soon. Never to be forgotten.

The song was written for a 1955 movie about a man in prison. It was a huge hit for the Righteous Brothers in the '60s. 25 years later, Bobby's original recording was used as background music for a love scene in the 1990 movie "Ghost". The audiences loved it and once again it became a hit. Same artist, same recording and it became a hit all over again. The album was rereleased and earned a whole boxful of platinum records. One for every COUNTRY where it sold more than a million copies. The Righteous Brothers talent is timeless.

Bobby Hatfield from The Righteous Brothers’ recorded it in 1965. It was the B side of a single 45rpm disc. That’s the version that appears in the 1990 movie Ghost (without the stratospheric interpolation at the end). What we hear on THIS video is the live 1965 performance by Bobby on the Andy Williams Show, in which he ends the song with an amazing ascent into soprano territory.
Bobby’s upright posture, bold choice of clothes, diamond-studded ring on his pinky, his impeccable hair, suave demeanor etc exude amazing confidence and masculinity (despite a reported cold and a case of the nerves due to the presence of his parents in the audience). His flights into the stratosphere stun everyone, but it’s his low notes that make my tummy wobble ( ‘godspeed your love’ ): his perfect use of chest resonance makes them sound so soulful, so meaningful. Stunning and classy.
Also, note how he creates a mix of pure vocalization (yodeling on the vowels) and conversational storytelling: his crisp consonants (b, d, g, t, m, etc) make the words perfectly clear. Bobby takes us on an amazing journey. One of the very best live performances of anything ever.

    Unchained Melody:
    Bobby Hatfield live performance.
    The Andy Williams Show-
    Episode #4.5
Episode aired: Monday, Oct 25, 1965:
Robert Lee Hatfield (August 10, 1940 - November 5, 2003) Bobby Hatfield, who had a higher countertenor voice to Bill Medley’s, William Thomas Medley (born September 19, 1940) baritone, sang lead on this track. It was his idea to record it, since Medley and Hatfield were each allowed to choose a song to sing as a solo vocalist on their albums. As Medley tells it, Hatfield knew the song well, and was a big fan of the Roy Hamilton and Al Hibbler versions of the song.
*In Nov. 2003 Hatfield died of a heart attack at age 63.
The Righteous Brothers version was a huge hit, but it was recorded with far more modest expectations. Phil Spector considered it album filler and released it as a B-side. The single had "Unchained Melody," with no producer credit on the label, as the flip to Gerry Goffin and Carole King's "Hung on You," but many DJs preferred "Unchained Melody" and played that one instead. This infuriated Spector, who subsequently left no doubt (actually calling DJs telling them to play “Hung On You” not “Unchained Melody “)as to which side of a Philles single was the A-side.
    * The famous climax of this song where Bobby Hatfield sings the high "I need your love" line wasn't how the song was written. In an interview with Bill Medley, he explained that Hatfield did two takes of the song, then left. He would often reconsider his performance and come back later to change it, and that's what he did on this track, returning to ask Medley if he could make an edit. This was no easy task, since with a maximum of four tracks to work with, you had to record over part of the original take, but Medley accommodated and Hatfield delivered that soaring vocal line. Said Medley: "I punched that in and before he left he said, 'No, I can do it better. ’And I said, 'No, you can't.' [Laughs] And I think it's a big part of that song."
    * This was released on Philles Records, Phil Spector's label. Spector, known for his "Wall Of Sound" technique, did not produce this - Bill Medley did. In a 2007 statement to the Forgotten Hits newsletter, Medley said: "You have to remember that I was producing our stuff before Phil Spector... I mean I produced 'Little Latin Lupe Lu,' 'My Babe' and all that stuff. Then when we went with Phil, Phil asked me if I would produce the albums because it was too time consuming for him to produce the entire albums. So he was going to do the singles and I would do the album. And so that's how that happened and that's how I produced 'Unchained Melody,' which Phil Spector apparently now takes credit for. He can have the credit. And I'm not a producer. I know how to produce. But it's obviously not a Spector production. 'Unchained Melody' was never intended to be the single... it was produced to be on the album. It was put on the B side of a Phil Spector single 'Hung On You' and the minute it was released 'Unchained Melody' just went through the roof."
Hatfield’s rendition of “Unchained Melody” although not the original, is the ‘gold standard’.

The Andy Williams TV show and this recorded the first year primetime TV went color in the US. Few had a color TV yet though.... Also the song is a cover of a 1955 song and actually the words are about someone in prison singing about how time passes and thoughts. The name of the movie was - Unchained - and why the song is named as it was.
The song did chart in the 50s and of course 60s a #1 and again in 1990 after a key scene featured the song in the movie - Ghost.

This song has history. It was written 10 years before this performance for a little known black and white prison movie titled "Unchained". The song is about a prisoner's hope that his love will wait for him. That's why he sings about time going by so slowly. After the movie, several people covered the song but it remained unknown. Bobby Hatfield (this singer) was the one to make it famous. Others have tried since but his version made it forever his song.

Hundreds of singers have sung this song but none does it better than Bobby Hatfield. The studio version of this song was used in the film 'Ghost' and was great but this live version is stupendous. No auto tune just pure talent. His mother was in the audience watching him perform live for the first time, he had a cold and he suffered with stage fright. When he gets to the end of the song watch his face as he does not contort it like other singers when he reaches those top notes.

It was amazing, wasn't it Stax. In the second half of the song, he keeps hitting new highs, and each time we think "Wow", but then each time he surpasses the previous high with something even more amazing until that incredible angelic high note to finish off! Superb and a nice reaction from you, too.

Nobody has equaled this performance, before or since. Bobby died way too soon, in 2003, I believe, at age 52. Bill Medley is still living. They were magic from the moment they hit the radio waves back in the 1960s. Their work became known as blue eyed soul.

The incomparable Counter Tenor voice of the late great Bobby Hatfield of the Righteous Brothers. Gave what possibly is the greatest (Live) television performance in the history of television (59) years ago back in 1965. The song written by multi award winning music composer Alex North with Lyrics by Hy Zaret for the (1955) prison movie (Unchained). Became the quintessential version of them all. Every singer and every orchestra have used this arrangement by the NBC Studio Orchestra of the Andy Williams Show ever since. With Bobby's epic vocal performance and the great music performance by the NBC Studio Orchestra. Has made this performance of "Unchained Melody" the best version of them all. The rest as they say is history.

Bobby Hatfield has the most acclaim and popular version of this song at that time he was a little under the weather and a bit nervous because his parents were sitting in the audience. Check out the origin and history of this classic song to hear some of the 1,500 version of the song. It has been sung bythe original singer Todd Duncan, Elvis, his good friend Roy Hamilton, Sam Cooke, Home Free,Voice Play, Al Hibler, and the Manhattan Transfer just to name a few. A fair reaction.

it was written for a movie called unchained about prison reform at chino prison at a time when movies often had a title song. it starred elroy hirsh. but unlike most it just went on. no autotuning and mikes were such that you had to sing. unless you lip synched. in the days of early elvis you all got around the mikes and cut a disk. mistake? do it all over again.

Notice how Bobby sounds like he's out of breath during that initial interview/talk? He actually did suffer with mild stage fright - until he started singing! No auto tune here - just the true talent of a 3-octave tenor voice with total control/pitch and breath control - smooth! A song that features more of Bill (baritone vocal) listen to "Soul and Inspiration". For the u;ltimate dup & harmony of a baritone and tenor mix, listen to "You've lost that loving feeling". which is also the most requested/played/air time song of the 20th century. Bill wasn't the first to do this song, and it has been done by several since this version, but Bobby (RIP) owns this.

I was 10 years old when they were on the Andy Williams show and we watched his show every week because he always had great guests and he was a wonderful singer too I loved his song Moon River the most. This song was a super hit the minute it came out as was their song You've Lost That Loving Feeling and the Righteous Brothers were loved by everybody. I play this song often because when I lost my boyfriend 2 years ago to a heart ailment we used to sing this song together while he played the drums and I played the piano and I miss him every time I hear it more than I do on a regular basis cuz I miss him everyday and let me tell you please never let the one you love leave without knowing that you love them. So very glad you got to react to this song you'll never forget it and so far I love all your reactions to the songs you've done ...keep rocking

Great reaction. This song has been used in a number of movies, but it was originally part of the score of a prison movie. The singer was a prisoner pleading with his lady love to be there for him when he was released. A lot of folks have covered this song, but Bobby Hatfield will always be the master. The word is that he had a cold on the night of this performance on the Andy Williams Show, but was singing his heart out because his mother was in the audience and he didn't want to let her down.

There’s a YT video that traces the performance history of Unchained Melody. It made its first appearance in a 1955 prison movie, ‘Unchained’. The theme song "Unchained Melody" was written by Alex North, music (15 Academy Award nominations for best song, including Unchained Melody) and Hy Zaret, lyrics, and performed by Todd Duncan.
This song has since become a standard and one of the most recorded songs of the 20th century: over 1,500 recordings have been made by more than 670 artists, including The Righteous Brothers, Bing Crosby, Elvis Presley, the Platters, Roy Orbison, Barry Manilow, Willie Nelson, Cindy Lauper, U2 etc. In 1955, three versions of the song charted simultaneously in the Top 10 in the United States. The song continues to chart in the 21st century.
The song’s lyrics allude to the prisoner’s longing for freedom (hence the various senses of the word ‘time’ used in the lyrics: ‘(clock)time goes by so slowly, ‘time(served) can do so much’, also the prisoner’s fear (‘Will you still be mine?), his hope (‘I’ll be coming home’) and his plea to ‘Wait for me, wait for me’.

What isn't often mentioned, in this performance, he had a heavy head cold. No such thing as Auto-Tune in those days, this is just pure talent. 💯💕 This song resurfaced in the 1990 movie "Ghost" with Patrick Swayze, Demi Moor &, Whoopi Goldberg, in the iconic "pottery" scene. Well worth a watch... especially with your girlfriend. LOL

I've seen hundreds (if not thousands) of reviews for this performance. I keep hoping that SOMEONE will say that, in spite of all the musical ornaments he adds to the song, you can understand EVERY SINGLE WORD. So many songs out there something is rushed or garbled to the point that you can't understand some of what's being said. Not this guy. Exceedingly clear.
