    1 year ago I rescued an old dove (I think he's around 20yo) that belonged to my grandma. Sadly my grandma had no idea how to take care of birds and only gave him basic care and left him in a garage because "it's too dirty to be in the home" (yea grandmas reasoning). The garage had some windows for light at least.
    Took months for this cutie to snap out of years of solitude and open up to me. I remember the dead eyes he had at first. But now he's so happy to live and I love him so much. I just want to make sure he lives the best life.
    My only concern is that he never had bath and as much as I want to give him idk how and if I should insist because of his age, his past, the fact he's so clumsy when he tries to fly and that he doesn't get out of the cage by himself.

    I always lay down a bath towel on the table then I add water to their bath (water flies EVERYWHERE) dish.I also add white vinegar to the water which is great for the feathers. Add a tiny bit of apple cider vinegar and that keeps away the mites and lice. You can also add bath salts made for just pigeons to their bath water. Never give you bird a bath on a cold ,windy, raining day. Keep them warm and your bird will love you.

    As my baby pigeon grows, she spends more time grooming than I do. I can't imagine spending that much time on my hair and nails and bathing. Our dogs watch in amazement as Poe began bathing in their water bowl. "You're giving YOURSELF a bath???" She is a "feral rescue". She was blown down in a storm and came right to my back door to flap and peep. I taught her eating and drinking, but the bathing she did by herself. She practices flying in place, or in front of a fan. She walks a lot although she can fly, she follows my chihuahua around the house and yard. He looks like a grouchy old man, but he has a soft spot for birds. If they are out together, he will bark at any approaching cat. She is so VERY affectionate! Very jealous of my laptop and mouse, she'll come over and began to preen my hand or just lay on the mouse. She tries to preen the chihuahua but he will not tolorate it. He'll just keep moving away. She seems to be picking up on a lot of behaviors on her own (as opposed to "training") I love your videos, and Tallulah is GORGEOUS!

    Thanks so much, my little sick pigeon seems to be on the mend and I am beginning to think of baths. I just ordered a foldable dog crate for taking my cat on holiday and think I could probably use it to let the pigeon bathe once it's recovered a bit more. I don't want to risk chills at the moment as its really cold but, in a little while, if it keeps up the progress, I think it will be good to lift its mood a bit more. You have been wonderful, bringing up things that I may have missed in making a nice environment for recovery.

      I started wondering about that, mine is about seven weeks? She's fully fledged and skillful at flying. Still "speaks" in her baby voice. I'm told it will be another week or two til cooing. She goes out in the garden with me and checks out local birds, no other pigeons around???? If I understand correctly, she'll be seeking a mate soon. Not sure how that will go. If they are like chickens, she'll start laying eggs whether or not she ever finds a mate. Not sure what we are supposed to do at that point....????

    • @animalpeople880
      @animalpeople880  Před 2 lety +2

      Good job for trying to help. It’s not unlikely that he’s scared of the shelter (they are often pretty timid), you could either continue to leave it out there in the hopes she becomes more comfortable with it over time, or you could make a new one that will hopefully be less intimidating (having it be just a roof with maybe one wall on the side the wind comes from could help, since it would be less dark). But since some birds love small houses and others don’t,you’d just have to experiment. Just be sure it’s nice and high, as most birds are strongly adverse to sleeping on the ground (or on say, a deck floor)

    Hello Eden, your videos have inspired me to get a pigeon and I just picked her (I think) today. I let her walked into the cage by herself as recommended by you, took her more than an hour. She behaved very tamely, did not bite or run away from my hand when I wanted to remove something from the cage. Quick question - do you advise me to grab her for a quick bath within these few days? I think she badly needed one.

    • @animalpeople880
      @animalpeople880  Před 2 lety

      Congrats on the new addition! Since being grabbed and manually washed is a pretty terrifying experience I’d only recommend it if there’s a medical reason, such as removing a toxin (if they got something like oil or paint on themselves) or treating external parasites. Beyond that offering a bath should be adequate, even if it takes a while for them to do it.

    • @animalpeople880
      @animalpeople880  Před 2 lety +1

      @@zewt great idea for a compromise on a bath for the time being. You got my name right. I don’t cover her cage since Tallulah is prone to night-frights (when birds get freaked out by something they either heard/saw/dreamed and panic. Often flapping, running into walls/falling off purchase and platforms) so she has no cover and a night light instead (the best way to solve that issue). I have had other birds that didn’t get night-frights and where prone to staying up when there’s a little bit of light so they did have cage covers. Whether not to cover the cage is mostly dependent upon your households schedule and the birds individual needs. The fact that you’ve been doing research gives you two a big head start in your relationship. I wish you two all the best!
