  • Musings presents a collection of conversations between former Singaporean Minister for Foreign Affairs George Yeo and writer Woon Tai Ho and research assistant Keith Yap. In these dialogues, Yeo mused over a wide range of topics from the importance of human diversity and Singapore's reflection of the world, to history, politics, economics, philosophy, TaijiGong and religion. This luncheon event presents a valuable opportunity to hear firsthand Yeo’s insights on Singapore's connections with India, China, ASEAN, Europe, the US and other parts of the world. Moderated by FCC President Keith Richburg.

Not being in political office certainly has its benefits and more degreees of freedom, but George Yeo is really insightful, well-read, erudite, and has great clarity of thought, drawing from history, geo-politics, cultural sensibilities, and also his own lived experiences, which are many. Refreshing to hear his perspective on Ukraine, Saudi Arabia, and China.
Sadly, though, the questions, especially from the journalists in the audience (Foreign correspondents) revert to type. Every single question is trying to elicit some sort of negative response on China. Sometimes, you wonder whether there's a closed-minded serum that is pre-requisite for all in the Foreign Correspondents fraternity.

Interesting question from the audience "Why HK does not have people with the same calibre as Yeo". I tell you the reaon. I was born in HK at the time where it was a British colony. We studied history in a highly restrictive manner. We started from Zhou and went all the way down to Ching. But our lessons stopped before the opium war. We knew very little about modern history of China and the rest of the world. I was interested in history and I had to find books from overseas. Without such exposure how could we find people with similar calibre as Yeo. British has political science in their colleges. They had colonised so many countries. They knew full well how to control the people that they colonized.

☺️Agree with you. I have very little knowledge about China’s n Asian history which are taught very shallowly till I started reading books by the late Dr Han Suyin and realised how much western propagandas we have been exposed to in our young age. The western imperialists have done a good job colonising not only our countries but also our minds. Our craving for anything west in the past is an example of a long term marketing strategies but fortunately things have turned around with the emergence of social media’s . Even now the big media corporations, the likes of Murdoch who control medias in the west and the military industrial complexes try to propagate lies to justify tax payers money for military expansions, in countries so far from their homes.

What an interesting point George made...The Israelites annex all the lands they won during the 1967 war with Syria...Palestine etc..Now where is the US and Western principle to sent arms to the Syrians or Palestine to regain these territories...They are no principles just diversions to obtain whatever it is the geo strategic advantage..Let digress back to history.
There is a UN mandate and resolution to defend South Korea from the North Korean invasion in the 1950s..but there was never a resolution to invade North Korea in return and capture Pyongyang and the conquest of the entire North Korea up to the Yalu River ..the Chinese and Noth Korea border. So we see many instances where borders and principles are just smokescreens...Mc Arthur just decided that there was a military strategic advantage..and tried to conquer the entire North Korea ..until the Chinese came down from the Yalu river and push the US Forces back to the original border....Now who breach the sancity of international borders..

    2. We do not measure a person's worth just by their intelligence and personal achievements but by what he or she has achieved for society and humanity as a whole. In this aspect, I disagree with those sycophants who compare him to LKY which in my two cents worth of opinion GY is far from it. He certainly is not close to that class yet Many academicians can answer with intelligent witty answers, Mr Kishore Mabhubani is one of them and the other been the now current FM of India Mr Jaishankar.
