Tito, you're unbelieveable! I am getting into streak filters at the moment and your videos are always the first to go source. I tried to mod my lenses a lot with some fishing lines but for me the filters work more practically. I just ordered one via ebay. But the huge drawback are the prominent flares all over the image.. So maybe I will get my final lesson in the next episode. :)

I enjoyed your video and the staggering amount of work you put into this presentation was truly impressive. I enjoy shooting anamorphic for the "look" but it is a lot more work and in the average markets like CZcams and Facebook they just don't appreciate it. I do think the "streak" filters certainly have their place for night and dark environments to add depth to a black expanse.

it would be so great to have some sort of glass filter who would reproduce more realistic high end anamorphic flares, with multiple little "square flares" produced originally by the glass elements. but there is probably only one way to do that : shoot with real anamorphic gear! I'd prefer not having these streak flare which look a bit cheap and have no flare at all. thanks for this, as always

Always happy to see a decades old Cokin still doing the job!
Really nice video. I’m about to test some budget multi-line streak filters (including rainbow!). I’ll be glad if I get any useful results. Thanks as always for your great work, and for such great testing.

I always found that the fishing string flare can only live inside the boundaries of the out of focus fishing string. So close to the lens, it gets really wide (and therefore invisible), but you can see in footage how the streak can be short and mainly bounce around/towards the center (also visible in the shots used here - I'm at the gym so I can't post timestamps, sorry). That also means that short lenses get less wide streaks which quickly looks silly, and the more you close down the less width you get. Multi-String helps here tremendously, the behind-the-lens one showed nicely that it can still fail (when stopped down). Btw, nice you dug up that old design, I still have mine incl the oval clicker on my parts-wall.
I own the Cokin for some years and was also rather pleased by it, yet never really used it (got it for a YT video I never made). Effect on the bokeh is really tolerable, but flaring is too aggressive IMO.
I know that some big budgets get away with fishing line bokeh, but still, it's not always a question of what I can get away with. When I know it/see it, it bothers _me_, and therefore I'm not happy using it :(
And just FYI, Cokin is a french company and should be pronounced as such, haha

I picked up a really cheap Conklin 77mm 2point star filter on ebay and with a little sanding it fit perfectly onto an empty Amazon basics 82mm polarizer frame. A few drops of superglue and i have an 82mm streak filter i can drop in my smallrig mattbox or screw on the lens. Not great with wide angles due to vinyeting, but really handy to add streaks as required. I gave up with the fishing line. The line was free as I found a lot of extra linee tangle in walmart so it was easy to get a few inches when buying my sharpies

Large projection lens shooters: You may find these tips helpful, if you want to use steadicam for a shot, but don't want to fly your giant anamorphic block. Just use your taking lens + a fishing line and an oval iris card.

If I ever need a crazy effect, I would want to use a full on diffraction grating to get rainbow copies. Not the expensive ones from Schneider, but the cheap solution to tape it ontop of a UV filter. Becuase it's all just diffraction.
I like the idea of comparing such filters at different points in the optical path in the lens.
Yet I would rather have a solution to remove flares, the anamorphic characteristics I am looking for is distortion(exactly like the Wes Anderson example you showed) and a changing squeeze. Excited to have such s video coming up in my watch later.

@@AnamorphicOnABudget I am consuming CZcams from my watch later, and it's about 3 months behind. But I did see that video and I am excited for it to show up at the top of my list in a few weeks. It's a different experience and having seen thumbnails and titles changed in the first day but keeping it in the back of my mind for 3 months combines into having very specific expectations.

    Hello Tito,
Creating my first anamorphic setup, I got a sankor 16F expecting some orange flares from it, but it turns out that it provides blue ones.
How can I tell which Sankor 16Fs produce orange or blue flares?
Any advice on looking for a 2x setup with orange flares, as I want to shoot outdoors and when pointing at the sun I want orange flares instead of blue ones.
    thanks for your time!

At the end, photography is only gone back in time, when analogue photographers - like me, 56 yo... - worked on filters by hand, partly to save money, partly to give personality to the images..!😂😂😂

Do you think it's possible to anamorfake a Fujian 35mm? It's sucha tiny lens I wouldn't even know where to start with. It's already a very weird lens by itself (aka terrible, almost a toy), but I think it could have some interesting results, maybe for some very specific shots.

  • @Holtenstein

I've been wanting to try a Schiender 4mm streak filter in front of the Isco Ultra Star for years now. It might not get the results I'm looking for and the filter isn't cheap so I haven't made the attempt.

@@AnamorphicOnABudget the streak filter is worth the price. (I have a blue one I believe is 2mm 77mm) I'm saying the cost of the test is too expensive for me. I'm shooting on and quite happy with my 5Es. My 2 mm has far too many flares. IMO they don't look natural more like a special effect. I was guessing the 4mm would be better but it too may be too pronounced. I also need a 4x5 or a 115mm for my set up to use with the FVD-16B and FVD-24A

Hello Tito, just a quick question. Does the fishing line’s light streak may destroy the cameras sensor due? I’ve modded my samyang cinelens and wanted to know if it’s safe to put the fishing line there. Thanks.

Hey Tito, so it's time to sharpen the knife and have a knife holding adapter now I guess. Cool stuff as usual. help me with some anamorphic math here. I have a 1.5x baby moller, record field is 16:9 (bmpcc 4K raw), so the desqueezed image is 2.66:1. Is it possible to conform it to 2.35:1 or 2.39:1 without altering the geometry/dimensions of things in the frame? I use davinci resolve. Thanks in advance! keep rocking

Desqueeze normally, then set your timeline up with numbers from www.tferradans.com/arcalc/go and Resolve will crop out the sides of the footage to match 2.35:1.
