Excellent review.
Thank you!
Thank you Sir for this excellent review 👍
Thank you for your kind words, my friend. I'm glad I was able to be on some help to you.
Thank god SOMEONE reviewed these.
Thank you for this vid, I was looking for the perfect set of inexpensive, lightweight and comfortable headphones to replace my uncomfortable Sennheisers and this video pretty much answered all my questions. I just ordered them and hope they live up to my expectations, though I'm a little worried about them slipping from being too loose.
Thank you for the compliment. I'm glad I was able to offer you help. Seeing it's been 3 weeks, how are you liking them?
@@Army-Firedawg I really like them, they sound great and stay comfortable even after 8 hours of wearing them a day at work. I did end up using a rubber band to hold the wings together since it felt like they were slipping a bit, but after that mod they fit perfectly.
@@egg62 Are you still using these?
@@zura8879 Yes, not everyday
@@Army-FiredawgHello! Please, can you recommend some custom earpads for A550Z? Because stock pads are quite cheap trash and induce discomfort on my ears. Thanks 🙏👍
super cute n helpful video! thank u my dude
Thank you for the nice compliment. Glad it was of some help to you.
Hey mate, is this good for gaming? I really want that noise isolation a good amount bass and good imaging for direction of footsteps thank you. I have a open back akg k7xx just want a closed back headphone for a change
Great review, can you say how the sound compares to the m40x or m50x? Don't know if you've used them
The M40x, I cannot comment on and take the following comparison with the M50 with a handful of salt because it's been a long while since I've been able to listen to either product. But, FROM MEMORY, the detail on the higher notes were more present and forward on the M50. Additionally, the soundstage was also much smaller. The 550 were more airier and also had, not a big soundstage, but larger in comparison. The mids were also more neutral. As for the bass, I honestly can't remember.
@@Army-Firedawg beautiful, thanks bro
Hi Firedawg
Do i need an amp to power this headphone? or just a smartphone will do??
C SingSing
Nope, your everyday average smartphone will power these just fine.
Hi. Did you compare this headphone witch ATH-MSR7? I'd like to change my beloved MSR7. I Tried sone Sennheiser and beyerdynamic too, but my MSR7 are still there.
I believe I was able to listen to the MSR7's before but I honestly can't remember enough to be able to compare these 2 unfortunately.
First sorry for my English. Recently I've bought a550z from second hand in Amazon. The distortion in low mids/ upper bass is sometimes very annoying. For example, in the song "drowning in the sea love" from Eva Cassidy is very frequent (cd+ampli & flac file). I don't know if it's a common problem in this model or It's because of it's a second hand product (if this was the problem I'd buy a brand new one). What do you think? Thanks in advance. Note: I'm thinking of audio technica m40xor beyerdynamic dt770 80 as alternatives. To me soundstage is important.
I'm fairly sure it has to be a problem caused by the original owner. From memory I don't recall ever hearing any distortion.
Niw as for the 2 headphones you were considering, I don't recall listening to the M40s so I cant comment on it but I did really enjoy the 770 (as did several at the CanFest 6 meet). Nice bass hit and mids but the treble is fair (not bad but bass is more prevalent).
x Army Firedawg x do you prefer beyerdynamic 770 (80) over a550z? Music I use to listen is Dire Straits, Amos Lee, Jason Mraz, some of jazz, soul, country...
I personally do.
You don't remember hearing any distortion? You mentioned the lower mids sometimes sounding like a low-quality MP3 in this review.
Then I vastly mispoke in my comment and was incorrect about there not being any if I said I heard it during my review.
Appreciate looking out my friend I'll remember it (this time :P) if ever it were to come up again.
msr7 or solid bass 1100?which audio technica should i buy?
What type of sound are you going for? For these are literally completely opposite ends of the audio spectrum. The MSR7 is very balanced and accurate sounding, whereas the 1100 is super fun, punchy, and impactful.
Hey, if I got it right, was there any distortion on Believe Brooks Dunn? If it's not this track, where can you hear it and in which about a minute? I have A550z and on ifi nano black label / dragonfly black I don't think you can hear it, some distortion. :)
If I don't have it either in this or my written review I don't remember. It's been a long while since I've last hear these headphones and song in question. Either way, glad you're not hearing anything music musical goodness.
@@Army-Firedawg
I asked out of curiosity, because I probably have less acute hearing for such things, I just wanted to know what this distortion is.
And why do you get rid of these headphones, generally did you like them? :)
@@Army-Firedawg
In total, it was 4 years ago. :)
The vast majority of the headphones I review, these included, are sent to me either as loaners from the company or as a part of a tour. In both case however, I don't get to keep the product.
Are they open sounding than ath m40x? Because 40x sound too congested to my ear
Chung Ee Wong
I unfortunately haven't heard the M40x so I can't give you an answer to that my friend.
I use the SRH 840 pads on the m40x opens it up night and day fit is slightly loose not snug but stays on
these are much more open sounding
Did you try any velour pad for this earphone? I emailed ATH and unfortunately this was their answer:
- Would the pads for ath A500 A500X fit the newer model A550z which I just purchased?
- The sizes are different and the amount of material that slides into the groove of the ear cups are different. I don’t think it would work very well. Sorry for the inconvenience.
- Oh ok. So is there any replacement velour earpad for A550Z? I can't seem to find them on google :-/
- I don’t believe so. There may be an obscure aftermarket pad that would work but I don’t have any details. Sorry for the inconvenience.
:(
I unfortunately haven't, velour's my favorite padding as well so I definitely feel where you're coming from. The only thing I could think of is to get the measurements of the A550Z cups and the groove size and find pads that way. If I do happen to come across some I'll update you with the info. I also ask that if you would, if you come across a fitting pair to share whee you found it so I may pass along the knowledge to other who may inquire, thanks in advance.
sure I will update you if I have any info. A550Z haven't reached me yet so I can't measure them yet. I'm thinking of returning A550Z and get the old model A500X instead just to have the velour pad =.=
I appreciate that my friend. As for the returning them, I myself can't really argue with you for I'd likely to something similar. Comfort is a very underappreciated aspect of an audio product.
@@vuhieu7029 Were you able to find anything for the A550Z pads?
@@thirtyacres7504 decided to stay with my IEM and returned the A550z. Sorry can't be much help here
How are these vs. the MRS7 and the 990Z?
I've unfortunately not had the chance to sample either so I can't offer an opinion for you yet.
x Army Firedawg x Hello have you tried the mashall headphones.
Frozen gamer
I was able to listen to a pair at BestBuy (don't remember the model number) for a gee minutes and FROM MEMORY they reminded me quite similarly of the VModa sound. Prominently V shape with an emphasis on the bass. Wasn't impressed with the comfort of them though I do remember that (but that coulda been my larger ear size).
How does this compare with the Samson SR850?
Unfortunately I can't compare the two for I've never personally heard the Samson SR850'S.
I just got these because my a900x just broke, and honestly they are very similar, and alot cheaper
I know exactly what you mean. These actually perform adequately even far above the a900x range. In fact these have become my recommended pair, along side the Edifier H850, for those wanting a great price/quality pair without spending a great amount of money.
Ya thanks so much for this video. I was looking, and for some reason there is not alot of reviews for these headphones. I know they are new, but usually with Audio technica they have alot of reviews out by now. I really love these headphones. I use them for gaming, voice chat, watching movies, and listening to music.
Ricky D
dear gosh I know!! tThey're out freaking standing for gaming. Really wish they had a shorter cable but tomatoes tomahtoes.
Ya i know the cable is a pain in the ass. but i keep pushing the slack to the back of my desk lol.
Ricky D hahaha that's one way to do it XD. I didn't even take the sandwich off of mine.
How do these compare to the m50x?
Alex Kon
Hmmm, my experience with the M50x is very small just to disclose up front but directly between the two. The M50 I feel is more detailed and revealing while the A550 is more spacious and lifelike. The tonal balance is similar but (FROM MEMORY) I believe the M50 had a notably harder bass punch.
@@Army-FiredawgI read that this class is more high then m50x in different revievs. They think that m50 has smaller scene and detalisation
I tried these, and I can say they're not for me. To my ears, they have a lot of midrange bloom and very veiled treble. They do seem to convey bass timbre unusually well, and have a good amount of low end, but extension was screwed because I couldn't get a good seal (no pressure on the bottom part of the pads). When I think about it, their sound is like an inversion of the MSR7, though cheaper sounding overall.
The sealing issue has been a fairly consostent thing with this brsnd of headphone. Though with their newest flagship (MUCH more expensive I'm aware), I'm hoping they trickle down the comfort to their intro headphones.
Are these on ear heaphones?
+Papa Musk
Nope, over ear. But they're not huge.
great, Thanks!
like your vids
but once bought a anc on ear from audio tecnica
broke after one week,
one channel gone
sent back,
thanks to amazon, no problem
never again a tec
they look so stupid and are so uncomfortable to my head
stick to my qc 35
and fostex trp's
Their fit definitely isn't for everyone, that's something that a good friend of mine who works for them admits but they're newest models have became more universal (which is sadly too late for some [as you yourself have experienced]).
Hey! do these need an amplifier?
+Khizer Khan
Nope, these are mobile friendly.
This or DT 770?
MMMMMM, hard choice. Just personal preference but I'd have to slightly have to edge the Beyerdynamic DT770. Mainly due to their comfort but I also like the house sound slightly more than that of the ATH.
Does it have a mic
No, these do not have a microphone.
@@Army-Firedawg thx g
ATH, excelent sound in a horrendous build quality. I'm a fan of the sound but the build quality is ruining their fame. My last Ws55 fell off my ears after 2 years, worst thing is that the plastic seems the same in their much expensive gear.
Well, sadly that's what company's today are turning to. Heck, the build quality of the HD800 S isn't much better in relation to the amount of plastic used.
In higher models, e.g. A900x, A990z and above, the A1000z Audio-technica uses aluminum on the caps, while in the A2000z it is titanium. :)
Why are you only on my left ear, feels creepy
*whispers in your ear* so that it makes our connection that much better
@@Army-Firedawg lmao its all good I didnt really mind it and it was a very nice review!
