- The 19th century Danish philosopher Soren Kierkegaard is best known for giving us the concept of a leap of faith. He was a deeply religious thinker, but his ideas have as much relevance for secular lives as Christian ones. He was the grandfather of existentialism, a purveyor of authenticity, and of discovering, amid conflicting beliefs and the demand to conform to the rules of society, who you really are.
Although he was born in 1813, his works were not widely read in English until the middle of the twentieth century.
He published Either/Or, his most famous work in 1843, and in it, through an array of pseudonyms and fictional characters, he discusses competing and contradictory ways one might live life. Should you live for the moment? Seeking pleasure? Or should you live for the interesting? Should you live dutifully? Ethically? Should you conform to the rules?
He suggests there are three stages of life, three spheres of existence: the aesthetic, the ethical, and the religious. Some of the key concepts are reflective aestheticism, the rotation of crops, subjective truth, passion, and, of course, Christianity.

Jokes aside your YT videos are some of the very few that I've seen that explore ideas in different scenery as opposed to some others that have very meaningful content but feel a bit like a school lesson. Like it's a group of ideas a teacher is giving to us but we can only see it through imagination.

Great video. Fyi, the 'gaard' part of 'Kierkegaard' is pronounced as 'gore'. My dad is Danish and he was very disappointed that I pronounced it 'gard'. Anyway, keep up the great videos.
I think 'aa' in the Danish language is the old version of the modern Danish/Swedish/Norwegian letter 'Å'. It is pronounced the same way, but the 'aa' spelling has since been replaced. I don't think anyone spells anything with 'aa' anymore, but it is left in some Norwegian and Danish names (I don't think Swedish has ever used 'aa'), of people and places.
But let's be honest. At least for people who are not speaking danish, reading it as "gaard" instead of "gore" is way cooler. "gore" sounds like the baby version Kierkegaard to me.
As if actually saying Kierkegaard out loud in the presence of other people wasn't pretensious enough. Looks like I've some fun conversations coming up.

I like how Wittgenstein plays on Kierkegaard's own idea of a tightrope walker saying, "An honest religious thinker is like a tightrope walker. He almost looks as though he were walking on nothing but air. His support is the slenderest imaginable. And yet it really is possible to walk on it." I think that in essence is the leap of faith, balancing existence in an incredibly uncertain fashion. Knowing S.K's stance in Fear and Trembling as well, reason and certainty can only go so far and needs to be sacrificed in replacement for faith. Then the payoff is unknowable until it appears in reality out of virtue towards absurdity. That's the beauty of Christianity and being a Christian in my opinion.

I'm all ready - my paper on Heidegger's authenticity is due by the end of the month! Btw, I'm still of the opinion that authenticity is a misleading translation of 'Eigentlichkeit', but perhaps I just never understood / properly thought about authenticity in the first place.

I am currently writing a philosophical fiction based mainly on Objectivism and my own ideals but I do want to understand other thoughts as well. One would be this in which is confusing at the start and the other would be nihilism which I hope you could explain. If it is okay could I give you my book?

So nihilism is the will to nothing. It is the view that there are no objective values to the universe and thus it is pointless and hopeless to fabricate values. Existentialism is basically saying you are responsible for finding and/or creating your own values for life. Adore your work, but the constant secularization of Kierkegaard's thought was a serious bummer. It may not match your sensibilities, but the lifeblood of his philosophy was his turn to religion
The problems when atheists try to interpret Kierkegaard and bending his thoughts to their wordlview. Kierkegaard would see so much despair in this video.
Things balance out in the afterlife, in that sense Hegel is correct.
How do you know what to do? You were referring to ethical issues. You said all of those things seem to come from outside of you so how do you know it’s you. It’s simply not true. Most of us have a basic human level inside us that informs us what is just or unjust. Regardless of our beliefs. Most of us can feel when something is right or when something isn’t quite right. We shouldn’t operate solely out of our feelings and allow them to drive the car.
I’m a christian. The Christian life transcends ethical living. It transcends you. It’s what it’s all about. Holding others in a higher regard than you do yourself. The Christian life isn’t about pleasure or things. It’s solely about loving others & treating others as you would desire to be treated. Their own behaviors & treatment towards you is irrelevant as in it doesn’t change who you are & how you will respond & treat them in return. The Christian life calls you outside of yourself. You are always transforming into a better version of you. No legitimate & serious Christian life should be stagnant.
How do you know what to do? That is the beauty of the Christian life. We’re not living life double minded. We’ve chosen. We jump off the bridge of faith every day.
How do you know what to do? You do the thing that requires faith. You live your life to be a servant & not live to be served.
When most people are searching through philosophical literature they are simply peering through the eyes of another weighing their perception of the world against their own.
The best philosophical literature does nothing to stir the soul or speak to the spirit. It’s not life giving. If the reader adopts the same outlook, that is all there is to it. It will not transform the reader into a higher version of themselves.
The truth is not one of us are capable of changing ourselves. We can pick up better habits perhaps. We can gain knowledge & wisdom. But, you’ll still be you. With better habits & more worldly knowledge. The individual cannot experience true transformation. The one who reads the scriptures alone will not experience transformation either. They will still remain as they were.
The reason for this is that it is not achieved through might, nor by power but by Spirit. Humans are spiritual beings possessing a soul & a body. Life of the body is in the breath. Life of the spirit never dies not even after the body breathes its last.
We transform by the spirit. The meaning of this life is to leave the world transformed. Prepared for the eternal life. A double minded man will not be prepared for life eternal.
Shall you reach the end and still not know what to do? Will you reach the end of your life, not knowing who you truly are and where you came from? Will you leave this life confused on how to live & treat others? Will you leave this life without reaching the highest version of you? Will you leave this life to enter into your eternal life still not knowing how to love?
Worse, will you leave this life to face your Creator, the Father, having failed to be taught by Him? Or to know Him?
The reason people are confused or not sure what do is because they’re attempting to live life in a way they were not created for.
You’re a spirit being. It’s the part of you that always is and will always be. The body is perishing as you read this. All that we see will pass away. Including heaven & earth. Yet, people concern themselves with everything that doesn’t matter and neglect the only thing that does & will matter.
Living life double minded is to live life like a mad man. Out of touch with reality. Who doesn’t know what to do. So he does whatever his minds tell him to do. Plural. For he’s always going back & forth. Isn’t it what a mad man does all the time? He goes back & forth?
That is what the godless man lives like. There’s no sense of Life. Only a life that his senses & his double minds calls him to. Truth will always allude this man & deception will become him & his friend.
I consider that the most important decision a man or woman will ever make isn’t what to do. The most important decision is if he will live by faith or if he will rely on his senses & double minds to lead him wherever it may be. No matter where that may be, he’ll arrive & leave there without having any lasting transformation. He may leave in a better state than before or worse.
However, he’ll have not transformed past his intellect or senses & may come back with just another mindset that’ll rival with his others. He will once again find himself like a madman searching to & fro going back & forth. He will continue to always come back to searching for he has yet to what he craves most… transformation… truth… oneness with self and his surroundings. He will not obtain everlasting change, which is transformation & solidarity until he chooses the way in which he was created.
His only peace will come from outside of himself. He will recognize this & spend his life striving to control the uncontrollable. In turn, he’ll not bear much good fruit.
This man most often finds the answer to what he should’ve done as he is perishing taking his last breaths.

Wine isn’t a philosophy drink
Why is this so groundbreaking? Why is Kierkegaards leap of faith so groundbreaking? Being a Christian, or any religion, has always been called faith, never Cristian proof. I dont get it.
Kierkegaard himself was deeply Christian, but he has more in common with the mystics of all traditions than he does with his mainline co-religionist. He was personally and culturally informed by Christianity, but he was a left-hand path mystic above all else. A pagan, an Atheist, a Daoist, a Hindu...etc, and et al, can all read the grandfather of existentialism and see something relatable.
I cannot imagine a study of Kierkegaard under the M-Burger and specific brand wine.....advertisement ?...... Kierkegaard Philosophy...................? I am sorry !

If you’re going to represent the works of a philosopher- do so in a manner that represents the actual work too; as uncomfortable as it may be, Kierkegaard said JESUS is the only way! His work must be respected thus should probably be corrected. It’s the reasonable thing to do.
