- Søren Kierkegaard was a profound and prolific 19th century writer and philosopher in the Danish Golden Age of intellectual and artistic activity. He wrote about how we choose to live and what it means to be alive, centred in the individual or “existing being”. He is regarded as the father of Existentialism. The stress of subjectivity is one of Kierkegaard’s main contributions.
His concept of anxiety or angst is one of the most profound pre-Freudian works of psychology. His most popular work includes the leap of faith, the concept of angst, the three stages on life (aesthetic, ethical, religious), among others.

I like it!
Soren Kiekegaard is famously the Phychology😍❤😍😍😍😍😍💐Greatest Philosophers💒👋!
I do but what’s it with the music?
4:10 Life can only be understood backwards, but it must be lived forwards. One of my favorite Kierkegaard quotes.
His best.
I heard that he was also a Christian ...is that true ...
because he never considered himself a philosopher in his own day and lived a relatively short life ...
He was a Christian theologian
If you don't do it, you'll regret it
. If you do it, you'll regret it. If you don't do both, you'll regret it. That's pure existentialism right there
I really don't tend to regret things. What's done is done. Even if you do regret it though, what point does that make?
I suppose if you do both you regret it as well.
... but you don't regret thinking about all possibilities, that's one value of life to increase true understanding what is all about (like the famous number 42), without social pressure and false expectations.
@@RoyArrowood Well, I think that your emotional capacity for handling such situations is excellent, and whilst you might be unremorseful about occuring things, others might be, and sometimes they even wish to get the opportunity and redo things again. What's done is done, yes. But when you really think about it, there are really times when we truly wish we could've done so much better than we would've, or revert things to its past form.
I do what I don't wanna do. I don't do what I wanna do.
"If I could prescribe only one remedy for all the ills of the modern world, I would prescribe silence." ~ Søren Kierkegaard
Beer also works.
@@Tom_Quixote great ! And wine too !
🙏 🤝 👍 love that so much !
20:04 “Life is not a problem to be solved, but a reality to be experienced.” That struck an inner chord, it's so true. We tend to overthink so much about solving and solving and that causes anxiety, sometimes the smallest of things can bring the highest of happiness, experiencing life, for what is the purpose of living a life that one does not even live...
wow... yes
This is the most ambivalent part of philosophy. We are trying to understand, but in the end we are only understanding that we can’t understand.
To paraphrase Dostoevsky and Kierkegård: Do not try to fill your spiritual vacuum in a crowd.
in an illusion we should profoundly say
God is love because love is solitude
I swear I can watch all videos on your channel without getting bored:
1. Engaging
2. I gain knowledge
3. Entertaining
Thank you Kenny!! This brightens up my day, appreciate your kind words. :)
true bro
@@thehumanmistery true bro
Totally agreed 😊
I broke off an engagement at the start of this year, it was a very painful experience for all parties involved. I was on a path of self realisation before the relationship started and was really coming into myself and regaining a love for life after years of suicidal ideation and stagnation. She was very loving and offered a situation where I could live comfortably from a monetary standpoint, something I have never had after a turbulent family life and spending my whole adult life in debt.
This past 6 months I have never been worse off financially, working at a fast food restaurant to barely cover my rent, choosing between paying bills or buying food, but every day I spend the majority of my time with philosophical enquiry and have been learning art fundamentals to produce something of my own, to try and represent somewhat that which exists in my mind and I have never felt more at one with myself and the world around me.
I am not in my youth anymore, and I will likely spend the rest of my life by myself. I cannot justify any of my actions, and I am not a responsible person who can offer any security or likely have the resources for a family situation. I have made the decision that I will give my all to realising my true nature, even if it kills me. I have already resigned to being a normal human being, I wish to be nothing, but know I must first become something.
Probably too much of my personal information has been shared within this, but that is not something that bothers me. I just want you to know how much your videos and explanations of ideas has helped me. Thank you for creating this content
As the text says on the oracle of Delphi: "Know thyself". For some of us, that is the only meaningful path. The outcome is not certain, but that is okay because the prosess itself is the reward.
Nice cop out of your life's responsibilities.
@@stephenedwards9931 did that comment make you feel better? I would like you to know I am in a much better place now and at peace with myself. I hope you can do the same eventually to not feel the need to try to prop yourself above others when they offer an honest explanation of their situation in life. All the best to you my friend.
The greatest philosophers in history series is awesome, please keep making them, I learn so much! Thanks!
Happily you made it pall and uploaded it for free. Im not rich enough yet to donate at the moment tho sadly.
🧐
I’m a very anxious, overthinking kid and i love Søren’s take on Anxiety.
Im a proud Dane.
Godspeed.
i read about anxiety being the dizziness of freedom, now i understand it... Excellent video
This was fantastic. One of the best Kierkegaard videos I've found!
You made this video very interesting to watch. I was already quite interested in philosophy, but now I feel like reading and learning about all of the philosophers. Existentialism is an incredible concept.
Thank you Krish! So glad that it was useful, I've been reading Nietzsche and Kierkegaard, next is probably Dostovesky - I hear he has amazing novels. Thanks for your comment.
"The mystery of life is not a problem to solve, but a reality to experience" - Dune omg
I don’t regret watching this video.
embrace philosophy ❤️
Never knew much about him until my good friend R. C. Sproul brought his life to my attention ....
Kierkegaard didn't live not even a half a century but had incredible insights and answers to man's lost condition and the remedy
I took two philosophy courses in college only heard of Kierkegaard a few times. This was fantastic. The fact that we spent months on existentialism and he was only mentioned twice is a shame.
Thank you!! Appreciate your comment a lot. Truly underrated, especially in English-speaking countries for some reason. Strange, since he is the father of existentialism.
So the issue in my university was that they treated Sartre and Thoreau as if they were the fathers of existentialism. One of my professors clearly had a thing for Thoreau as we spent about three weeks on him alone which felt... heavy handed. We were taught that Kierkegaard was -the- father of existentialism but then they barely taught him at all. Moved right on to Sartre.
@@BlindJediKnight ohhh, that seems biased. It's a shame but it is to be expected in the university, Kierkegaard maybe is kind of taboo. Regardless, another reason why self-education is paramount!
@@Eternalised I'm curious about that, why would he be taboo ?
@@charlesmougeot-casaubon5064 because he is not an atheist
“Life is not a problem to be solved, but a reality to be experienced.” - Wasted so much time thinking the opposite of this. How incredible to hear it stated in these terms. I could have lived my life without this chance encounter, but I've never been more inspired by a single phrase.
You can't fix the world's problems but you can change yourself.
@@crosstolerance 🙏 🤝 👍 absolutely !
Just read the epic book "whats new ADAM" (by Osho) -> game changer ! You won´t regret that mate !
Choice is everything, thanks for choosing Kierkegaard for this video! Looking forward to more! Keep up the great work!
Thank you so much! Appreciate your time to write a nice comment.
One of my favorite philosophers.
a solid examination of a great man. thank you
I genuinely enjoyed this video I didn't even know who this philosipher and I thank you for teaching me.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching, appreciate your comment
This was an exceptional well rounded explanation. Thank you for making this video
I really like the way you capture Kierkegaard's ideas. I do want to point out that in the story of Abraham and Isaac, Abraham does not kill Isaac. God provides an animal rustling in the bush and Abraham takes that as a sign from God not to sacrifice his son, but to sacrifice an animal instead. But you were right in noting that this was a battle between ethics and faith (or as you say "religion"). Because the dilemma was choosing between Abraham's own son's life and his love for God.
that’s amazing, abraham may have taken anything as a sign, like if he accidentally cut himself, or the clouds block out the sun. so silly
Excellent video - thank you!! I have watched a number of others on You Tube - and you actually brought it all together for me in a concise, insightful, comprehensive analysis.
This video is a masterpiece
I know Kierkegaards journals inside out.
He changed my entire outlook on Christendom
Another great video
Please keep them coming
Very life affirming
ty so much for these videos, I really enjoy them
This channel deserves way more views. Keep up the great videos.
I'm usually not interested in history videos but this one was actually really interesting!
Thank you for the kind comment!
I just discovered this channel and it's already one of my favorites
Thank you very much!
Kierkegaard is an interesting man to say the least about him
Absolutely, fascinating. Thanks!
I discovered your channel yesterday, what a pleasant surprise. I really enjoy your videos, they are very interesting and can help us understand the important messages of brilliant philosophes. Thank you
Welcome aboard! Glad you find the videos helpful, appreciate your kind message.
What an excellent video, great narration. Thank you so much for this!
Thanks a lot Oscar!! Really appreciate your kind words :)
"Life is not a problem to be solved, but a reality to be experienced". I had heard the phrase before. It's in Dune, by Frank Herbert. I don't recall who says it but, in the 2021 movie, it's Jamis who says this to Paul Atreides in a dream. So Frank Herbert was fond of Kierkegaard. Or at least familiar with his philosophy. Not surprising given how introspective the Dune saga is. How wonderful!
PS: Dune. Highly recommended.
This is an outstanding video and synopsis. Thank you.
In the beginning, I liked that quote so much "Life can only be understood backwards; But must be lived forwards" that I wrote it down on my whiteboard. I had to re-watch a couple parts towards then to get the whole effect into it. Especially the part about getting married or don't get married, you'll regret it either way. Hang or don't hang you'll regret that decision too. Interesting to think about. Awesome video man, you always have great videos!
Thank Sean! Always great to have your support. Interesting to think about indeed, love that quote as well! :)
I am learning a lot from your channel… Really great insight.👍🏽
Kierkegaard is basically my 40’s.
These are really great, very comfy watching.
This is perfect 💎🗝️
I am having my exams day after tommorrow and this channel is helping me alot. Never ever dare to quit this channel okay?😁👉👈
The goal of being is the actual experience of being here and now such that we are truly real. The more real people are the greater the experience being is actualized. We fulfill our own personal philosophy of infinite now and that's why I know that I know who I am in this world.
Excellent video, very fascinating.
This video was so enjoyable his work definitely helps build by faith ❤️
Amazing work !

Thank you for sharing this informative video about greatest philosophers in history. New friend here. Stay connected.
Thanks and welcome my friend!
Dude, your stuff is great! Keep creating, love it! I like the simplicity of your videos, and the high knowledge that comes along with it. Thank you! Did you studied philosophy in the university? I studied philosophy for myself, read nietzsche, dostojewski, sarte, kierkegaard and so on! I can highly recommend you to read "Life against Death by Norman O Brown. Brown studied freud, nietzsche and many others and wrote this book. Unfortunately he is not well known.. i would really love to see a video about this book.
Thank you! I study philosophy as a hobby as well. I'll look into "Life against Death".
Gracias por los subtítulos en Español, se agradece! Un saludo
De nada, es un placer. ¡Gracias por la visita!
que buen canal!
Si, si !
I have just started reading Works of Love. The words they used for his criticism of the church was "polemical".
Works of Love

This is as close to perfect a guide to face one's anxiety and use it to catalyze growth and strength in our existence. This was also a thought study in how to handle, face and embrace fear and reflection. #introspective 🗝️
Good one
Thank you! Cheers!
Great video, thank you very much , note to self(nts) watched all of it 21:33
Just came from your notes from the underground video. Please don't change this content. I can see you're a new channel, so I would quite enraged if I start seeing you doing Ben shepiro person type of crap. Also I'm not trying to be a jerk, but speak clearly I had to open the caption to understand "theatre" and even words like "just" wasn't clear, try around 5:00 and hear yourself (I'm being obsessed because I just saw your channel and I'm loving it)
No worries will keep making this type of content! Thanks for the remarks, I definitely notice it more in some of my videos, hence why I make subtitles for all. I need to learn to vocalise better!! (work in progress). Welcome to the channel! :)
yes
Nice voice
9:55. Same ol' routine of life's choirs & tasks
Good stuff
Thanks for the visit. Glad you enjoyed it!
"Daddy's money ended, guess I'll die", sort of vibes. I wonder if he could hold the same ideals if he experienced life through what he wanted to avoid.
Great philosophers of world are really awesome. They make us weird
good sukses selalu
I am commenting so it gets recommended to several other people. Nice Video.
Like many philosophers, he might have been diagnosed with non stereotypical high functioning autism. His existentialism and hyper empathy and his challenges in the social are further confirming that.
The autism spectrum is so wide today, I think the majority of people are, but especially those gifted and challenged.
Morbid fact: "Kierkegaard" (modern spelling "Kirkegård") is the Danish word for "cemetery".
Source: I'm Danish ;)
thats in fact incredible morbid . . .
In the 19th century of systems , Kierkegaard and Neitzche were the two rebels insisting on being individuals .
And before that there was MAX STIRNER !
🌻
3:50 hey that's my church!
The music accompanying the video, can be a little distructing at times ...
Still. 👍
history is cool
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for the visit!
To bad the speaker whispers instead of speaking, so that you cannot actually hear what he says.
What I really lack is
To be clear in my mind
What am I to do,
Not what I must know.
The chief task of life is to become an individual and I can only become an individual by action and decision.
I sacrifice my self for my profession,
My wife,
My children,
Or, more properly expressed,
I do not sacrifice my self for them,
But I find in them
My satisfaction and joy.
What I am through her
She is through me.
Neither of us is anything by oneself;
We are what we are
In union.
That is why friends are dangerous;
Especially spouses.
Das biggest danger is that of losing oneself.
To have a self,
To be a self,
Is das greateste concession made to mankind,
And at the same time,
It is eternity’s demand upon him.
Every call from god is always addressed to 1 single person- de individual.
Therefore, de 1 who is called
Must stand alone,
Walk alone,
Sit alone,
Sleep alone,
Alone with god.
God is in us-
The author of our dreams.
Lol what is the title of the photo at 10:05? Is that a.. pipe rack.. on the wall? I WANT THAT!
Great painting. The Card Players by Paul Cézanne
all this overthinking. life is death. that's all existentialism comes down to. said in only 3 words.
faith is the substance of things hope for ...Hebrews 11:1
there is substance to faith
it is the substance of the unseen reality
this world is a shadow of the unseen (spiritual) reality
.
Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God,
so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.
.
without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is,
and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him
.
See that ye refuse not him that speaketh. For if they escaped not who refused him that spake on earth, much more shall not we escape, if we turn away from him that speaketh from heaven:
Whose voice then shook the earth: but now he hath promised, saying, Yet once more I shake not the earth only, but also heaven.
And this word, Yet once more, signifieth the removing of those things that are shaken, as of things that are made, that those things which cannot be shaken may remain.
Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear:
For our God is a consuming fire.
the only thing that cant be broken is the laws of physics.
