I have to say that this is by far the best camera review I have witnessed to date, comparing cameras excellent, and operation. Well done, thanks again. You are making some decisions much easier and this review was done 4 yes ago. BRAVO!
This is the best review of the X-H1 one I've seen to date. You stayed away from reciting the spec sheet back to the viewer, and you focused on whats most important to many users in the real world. What a refreshing change. Also, this is the *only* review I've seen to date that discusses how Fuji put considerably more engineering into the lens mount's robustness and stiffness to accomodate long, fast, heavy prime telephoto lenses. As a motorsports photographer, this is quite important to me. Very well done! Thank you.
I just bought one of these this week..and I LOVE it! Everyone talks about it for video but I got it for photography. Reasons - 1. Ibis helps when shooting longer lenses in low light Eg. I can shoot my 90mm at 1/60 instead of 1/125 which can make the difference between iso 12800 and 6400 (note: I can go as low as 1/10 but since I shoot moving subjects that would create too much motion blur) 2. That grip!! I LOVE that grip! Yea you can add grips to Fuji’s other cameras but I really just adore the grip and it makes using larger lenses so much better! 3. The shutter mechanism is like you said-AMAZING! The smoothness of the shutter makes getting camera shake free images that much easier. That being said, now that the XT4 is out it offers more in a smaller package, BUT you can get the xh1 for 800 or less used, that’s amazing! The camera cost about the same as a a7iii when it came out! I know I’m gonna be snatching another one of these to replace my secondary xt2!
It's like considering the xt4 or the xh1+800$, it depends on what you need. Personally, i'd take the xh1+56 or 90mm over that xt4 body any day but not everyone is me
The best XH1 review that I have seen. I confuse for a couple of week about using 2 systems (Sony n Fuji) and I already owned X-Pro2 and XT2. Planing to sell X-Pro2 + 1024 to A7III + 1635G for video. After watching your review, it blows my mind man. Now I made the decision to sell my rarely use X-Pro2 to XH1. This save my pocket !! I owned 6 Fuji lens and no need to waste the money for Sony Lens Thanks again for your good review.
Oh Yesss, for over 6 months I'm on CZcams busted by reviews from the alpha9 to GFX 50s and this camera is definitely my choice, this is a top class review... Your very talented!!!!
This is by far the definitive review of the X-H1 as it currently stands, and refreshingly honest about some of the issues. My take on it right now is I’d only use it if I owned and wanted to use MF lenses for video, as the AF has very severe issues; not just the inability to find focus, but the pulsing even when it does which would be a complete deal breaker on a bigger screen. I’m on the fence about this or a GH5, or an A7riii for hybrid use...
Great review - very comprehensive covering the not so good as well as what makes this camera stand out. Particularly liked the graphic explanation of where Eterna sits along side all the other Fuji film simulations. This video is a must watch before you make a decision to buy the X-H1.
just got it, after 1000 of videos and rev, I didn't even take my shoes off after coming from shop. Just felt in love with this camera and start testing immediately! Eterma is best.
As a long time Sony mirrorless owner, well, long time if you consider 5 years a long time, this video pushed me over the edge to buy the XH-1. I have to say, it was easy to fall in love with the camera. I've since sold one of my three Sony bodies...
WOW!!! Fantastic review. I've watched several reviews on the X-H1, and no one...noooo one...did a deep dive like you did on the Eterna color profile. Thank you very much.
Thank you for a balanced and objective review. I have owned several Fuji X cameras including the XT-2 which was my favorite. The lack of IBIS was a huge consideration because for stills I would have to increase ISO to ensure sharpness in certain situations. IBIS is a game changer for me especially for lenses without OIS and primes. Your review provides me information I can use to make an informed decision.
I agree. I have the xt2 and ordered both the Xt3 and xh1. Keeping the xh1 for IBIS. I can shoot my 90mm at F2 1/30, ISO 500 for low light portraits or still subjects. With the xt2 and xt3 I have to shoot F2, 1/320, ISO 6400. Big difference in IQ being able to shoot lower shutter speeds.
i've probably seen a 1000 reviews to this camera...but yours is Nr.1 to be honest...i have the cam now for a few days and agree in most of your thoughts...it' not what i expected but every systems has it's pros and cons...best rgds fm Switzerland
TOP!
Great review. The video AFC reminds me of the gh5 (before 179shutter) and it’s erratic behaviour. Even if it’s at 100%DR. What I don’t understand is how a picture profile/DR setting can affect the autofocus unless it’s doing the autofocus processing after image processing which seems dumb because people use different picture profile settings. I always assumed it used the raw sensor data to do af processing first. I’m not an engineer but it makes more sense.
Thanks Lee! My guess is that higher dynamic range takes its toll on getting the maximum out of the sensor and therefore the processing might be affected, becoming slower in terms of actually computing the image thats coming in. Fujifilm just announced a first software update for the X-H1. Not addressing the AF bugs just yet, though. Nevertheless I like how they at least do care about updating. Even bringing new life to older models from time to time as you know. Saw your first impression video of the X-H1, did you end up getting one for yourself?
Evidently Something Yes I bought one. I’ve been using it now since it came out and everything on the photo side is Just awesome! (except how soft my shutter button is compared to my friends xh1) As for video I’m not really as impressed. The ibis is to erratic and janky for me to want to use it. The autofocus in video is also erratic and never works in same way twice so you can’t even predict its behaviour. I’d rather shoot with it off as it looks unnatural. I do like the linear manual focusing though. And I plan to try out some follow focus on it in the near future. Obviously Fuji will fix some of the issues with firmware but I feel like it might have been rushed to market a little early.
I agree, Lee...thiis is an excellent, real-world focused review. It's honest, candid, accurate and provides potential buyers with *insight* as ot whether it would meet their needs.
Some CZcamsrs report worse auto focus on Sony cameras with S-log. I don't think the RAW sensor data is used for the auto-focus. There's a LOT of data coming from the RAW sensor. Sony's downsample 6K to 4K and each pixel has 12bits, just imagine that data rate if it was RAW! AF processors can't handle that much data. I think image pipeline works kind of like this: RAW sensor data -> Picture profile processor -> AF processor I think the AF processor is quite weak, as its mostly software based. Software based systems are what makes things like eye AF possible. Eye AF would be exponentially harder with a hardware based processor. The picture profile processor conforms the RAW data into a smaller colour space set by the picture profile settings. It'll apply ISO gain, gamma curves, colour matrices and force it into 8-10bit. If the AF processor taps into the output of that, then obviously the AF processor will be working with different data. If AF processor doesn't tweak detection thresholds based on picture profile settings then low contrast profiles will obviously make it harder. You could make the AF processor tap into its own picture profile processor but it would add complexity.
I also started out with xt20. I bought the xh1 about 6 months ago. At first I didn't warm to it but I learnt how to use it properly and now I absolutely love it. Xh1 is a unique camera in the fujifilm line up but I would recommend it if you can find one at a reasonable price.
Danke sehr (und Hummel Hummel). Nice to see the Werfte 55 years after my time in Hamburg. The H1 seems perfect for my use case as a "utility photographer," and now videographer, in school classrooms, music rehearsals, informal group events, meditations, et al. A high-quality unobtrusive camera that doesn't require keeping half my attention on a gimbal or stabilizer is tremendously appealing. I am selling gear, including the X-T20, in preparation to buy a used H1, hoping that firmware updates have solved, or will solve the focusing issues - that's a great concern.
Workaround, I use the silent video mode and have majority of settings for video preset, usually I only have to adjust ISO, SS is preset to 1/48th. The only downside of this is you have to use touch screen to adjust any settings, which if like me you hate touch screens is a pain, until I discovered that you only have to hit the Touchscreen once the settings section and then once the menu comes up you can navigate and change settings using Joystick. This means that in your example of switching instead of 5 steps for me its between 1-3, switch to video on drive dial, and then if exposure is not right, hit touchscreen, scroll to iso with joystick click and then change ISO. This takes me about 5 seconds.
Very good video (cut/music) - a great balance between photos and video. I already wanted to order the X-H1, but I will probably have to take a closer look and "listen" to it. I have never "heard" the noise development so clearly in any video so far. I hope Fuji can fix all other problems with an update. The only disadvantage of the A7III is the body and the very expensive premium lenses.
Very good to see your video! I have my video AF settings to AF Area, AF-C focus mode and +2 speed at DR100% and I'm consistently getting great results. AF-C makes the difference from my experience and is obviously not the default setting. To say this camera is great and is certainly an upgrade from the venerable XT-2. Slow motion videos with the 100-400mm with the TC 1.4x on are better than I would have ever expected. I'm at 840mm with just a monopod and with excellent results on stills and video - simply unbelievable.
I have had mine for about 1 month now my previous camera was a XT-1 I'm starting to miss that camera. I don't shoot video and the color is better in my opinion is better but I'm not going back. Thanks for sharing this video it was enjoyable to see someone else's opinion of this camera.
Klasse. This is probably the only review you'll need to watch if you're interested in the X-H1. And I do hope Fuji takes note of the issues. Their firmware response will decide if I finally do buy this or not. Unless Samsung really does come out with an NX-2 :-) Which drone were you using and how easy was it to match with Eterna?
Hey Marq! Thanks a lot for your kind words! I'm fairly certain Fuji will deliver. They have always done so in the past and they are the best in the business when in comes to software updates. Are there actually rumors about a new NX2?! That would be awesome! The drone footage was filmed with the Mavic Pro. It is pretty easy to grade, when you're recording in the D-Log profile.
Rumours are rumours, sometimes they're true, other times wishful thinking. They are however a cure for Gear Acquisition Syndrome, because you always expect something better to be around the corner, and end up buying nothing at all :-) Now I was hoping the X-H1 was the unicorn camera that got it all right, but it's clear the IBIS is not as smooth as Panasonic or Olympus (or even the Pentax K-5 back then) and that video autofocus is unfortunate. So now I'm between getting the X-H1 and waiting for a fix in firmware, or waiting to see if an NX2 materializes, or a long-shot Nikon FF mirrorless (but probably without IBIS), or wait till Photokina and get a Mavic Pro 2 in June. It's hard being a hybrid photographer/filmmaker :-)
Interested to hear how you customise your function buttons, dials and touch screen for video shooting. Hoping the firmware in May will bring a bigger Movie Silent Control menu.
Same reason as yours I bought a 500 shutter count used X-H1 at $700 this May. Can‘t be happier. Now the family are 90 & 56 using X-H1, 16/1.4 & 35/1.4 using X-Pro3.
Your videos are of a high caliber and refreshing to watch. I was looking for a hybrid camera and almost bought the X-T2 based on the quality of the videos you have posted. I held off and got the X-H1 and I have to say my experience has been identical to yours. Great content, thank you.
Herzlichen Dank für dieses überragende Review und die ganze Arbeit die du investiert hast!! Einfach Klasse!! Mit Abstand eines der besten Videos zu X-H1 :-)
Very in depth and glad you went through the different settings to get an idea of how much control you have over the camera such as focus speed. And the awareness and attention to problems such as the inconsistency in focusing due to dr settings and having a temporary “fix” until a software update. I really liked your review with the xt-2 and the different color profiles you showcased with your preferred settings. And the depth of this review was just what i expected from you and then some. Thanks for the review
huge deals on xh1 right now. b&h has it for $999 but even better with the 8-16mm lens which is a $2,000 lens you can get the camera for $300. Even if you don't want the lens you could sell it and get the xh1 for a crazy good deal.
Just bought a used X-H1 to use it along with my X-E3 together with Fuji´s zoom like the 10-24/ 16-80 and the Fujicron primes. Basically I wanted a better grip and the IBIS to use it with my vintage lenses like the Canon FD 1,4/50, 1,2/85 and Nikon 2,8/80-200. I am basically happy with the performance of the XTrans III Sensor, mainly doing still photography and only occassionally doing vlogging. Picture quality is superb - even compared with my full frame Nikon D750 and at a fraction of the price of a X-T4 with the build quality of Made in Japan its a steal in 2021 - at least that´s my thinking when I went for it...
Dante Corbett I'm holding for the upcoming Nikon mirror less. (I use both Nikon and Fuji) . I'll make my decision then. What's your owner opinion on the AF speed for photography, and the AF tracking for video? How's the low light performance, namely in photos? So far...it's the batteries that are holding me back. And it's just to close to the Sony €€€ wise.. If it was under 2k Euros with Grip included..... Do you come from Fuji, or another brand, before getting the X-H1 ? Thanks. ;)
fantastic and balanced review well done. Regarding preset and switching between Stills and Video I use the silent video mode and have majority of settings for video preset, usually I only have to asjust ISO SS is preset to 1/48th. The only downside of this is you have to use touch screen to adjust any settings, which if like me you hate touch screens is a pain, until I discovered that you only have to hit the Touchscreen once the settings section and then once the menu comes up you can navigate and change settings using Joystick. bro this video let me fall much more in love with this camera than i already was before. I will buy this in 2 months when i got the money for it :) xD great video
Overall nice discussion... X-H1 is almost always termed Heavy, huge etc. after some of the same people who were/are using D3,4,5 etc. and 1D, 1Dx etc... I wonder if some of these photographers have on a diet or grown weak....
Super cool, fairly unbiased and well made review. I enjoyed the footage really much also. Nice city you live in! Like your personality also. Thank you. Greetings from Finland. :)
Great review! Honest, unbiased and beautiful production. I liked the use of Hendricks Gin and a lemon for the focus test. Reminds me of the James Bond Martini; 3 parts gin, 1 part Vodka, half part Lillet and a large strip of lemon peel - my favorite libation.
Amazing review....best out there. Top video production as well. Thanks for posting, helped me decide to wait. While longer to see if the bugs get sorted.😎🇦🇺👍
Many people praise this review as a whole (which is true) but the choice of music is also brilliant. Big thumb up for that from me! As for the camera: it's the same price territory as A7ii (it's old, I know). So the big question is: FF or APSC for stills? And it's even harder to answer since FF Sony is actually smaller. Dang. I just cannot make up my mind on that.
Thank you! Regarding full frame, rarely do I miss a super shallow depth of field with the APS-C sensor of the Fujis. It surely is a nice thing to have sometimes, but i find the Fuji camera more appealing than Sony's offerings.
Thank you so much man, you always have the most beautiful reviews, I was waiting for that one from you and no disappointments at all, you have something special. .. my best 30 minutes watching a review this year so far.
Testing the X-H1 IBIS with an OIS 18-55mm zoom is not a good comparison. Fuji is not talking much about how IS lenses work with IBIS, but I did some of my own tests. With a prime lens the IBIS seems very steady and smooth. With the 18-55mm the OIS seem about the same as when that lens in mounted on my X-T20. Since when OIS lenses are used on the X-H1 the on/off switch on the lens controls image stabilization. One cannot run the IBIS and OIS independently. That combined with my own admittedly subjective test suggests to me that when an OIS lens is placed on the X-H1 the body’s IBIS defaults to the lens OIS. Some techie or Fuji rep will undoubtedly dispute this, but try it yourself. IBIS performance seems much better with primes and Fuji states that - if you dig deep enough in the tech talk. SOOO...when comparing the X-H1 IBIS with Panasonic using primes of the same focal length will produce more accurate results.
Fantastic review! As always, your reviews are amazing. Hopefully the focus issues will be fixed in a firmware update. Where’s the beautiful lady of your prior videos?
Thank you very much! The beautiful lady is very busy building her own business :) Planning another episode with her about Portrait lenses soon. stay tuned!
Very interesting and complet review. I must admit that even though the XH1 seems to be a good camera in many ways, the issu with the AF mode makes me a little scared
Great video! Great Camera! One thing- You mentioned the 18-55mm kit lens that is wonderful indeed- but the kit lens packaged with the XH1 is the 16-55mm 2.8 makes for a mighty fine pair as well with the IBIS... cheers.
There is no fans in this camera. You have only IBIS motor. But when you turn it off motor still works to keep matrix in center position. If this motor could stop the matrix could be lazy and make images more shaky.
Even in 2020 with xt4 coming the xh1 is still Gr8
Is X-H1 drain the battery drastically?

I am selling gear, including the X-T20, in preparation to buy a used H1, hoping that firmware updates have solved, or will solve the focusing issues - that's a great concern.
I agree on the video presets. Switching from photo to video mode is very cumbersome, and this can be fixed as you said
Workaround, I use the silent video mode and have majority of settings for video preset, usually I only have to adjust ISO, SS is preset to 1/48th.
Phenomenal review! Your image samples are so much better than some of the others I've seen haha
Probably the best X-H1 review out there, thank you.
Thank you. You helped me decide on my next camera purchase.
In fact this is the best review i have ever watched about the xh1 . Thank you
Love your reviews. They are quite something.. very unique.
Love your reviews. So glad you mentioned the AF had been improved with the new firmware update.
Yes, I'm glad Fuji delivers. That's what makes them such a great company.
Your videos are of a high caliber and refreshing to watch. I was looking for a hybrid camera and almost bought the X-T2 based on the quality of the videos you have posted. I held off and got the X-H1 and I have to say my experience has been identical to yours. Great content, thank you.
you are welcome and thank you very much!
Honest review
The most informative I watched, fujifilm should listen well
That was a well-balanced review, highlighting the negatives and positives. Thumbs up!
Finally, a thoughtful and unbiased look at the X-H1. Thank you!
Herzlichen Dank für dieses überragende Review und die ganze Arbeit die du investiert hast!! Einfach Klasse!! Mit Abstand eines der besten Videos zu X-H1 :-)
Sehr gern! Willkommen!
Amazing presentation! Loved your review.
Toll! Just an excellent review. Since My Leica M4P I have never loved a Camera as much as this xH1. Bravo.
Woah, dude!! You are getting really good at this! DPreview should hire you to up their game. Keep doing more!!
Best review of the X-H1 by a good margin! Thanks for the thoughtful approach.
I love the Eterna look! I hope they give it to the XT20 in firmware... it may be a small chance, but if ANY company would do it, Fujifilm would do it!
My comment came right in time! Love you guys. Awesome video as always. I think it's the chosen one! Happy I picked one up.
Thanks. ;)
Wirklich sehr informativ und dezent ohne irgendein Markenbashing. So etwas finde ich mal richtig gut, Danke für den Beitrag und deine Arbeit!
I'm seriously Fuji curious now that the XH1 is 1299 US and INCLUDES the grip and extra batteries. This was a great detailed review.
can't go wrong with the current prices. Go for it!
Superb review. Thanks for all that hard work
fantastic and balanced review well done.
Excellent review. Even if you don't like the Fuji, the review is very well done and gives a wealth of info and examples.
bro this video let me fall much more in love with this camera than i already was before. I will buy this in 2 months when i got the money for it :) xD great video
Even in 2021 with the XT4 here the xh1 is still Gr8
What a brilliant review. A well put together and thoughtful film. Thank you.
Best review of X-H1 yet. Thank u.
Really nice work! It's one of the most enjoyable and well rounded reviews I've seen on this camera. It should be on Fuji rumours.
What lens hood are you using on your 18-55? Really like the low profile. And, fantastic review of the XH1, thanks for making this.
Just realized I think it's a filter adapter!
Overall nice discussion...
X-H1 is almost always termed Heavy, huge etc. after some of the same people who were/are using D3,4,5 etc. and 1D, 1Dx etc...
I wonder if some of these photographers have on a diet or grown weak....
Thanks, the microphone test was very helpful.
Super cool, fairly unbiased and well made review. I enjoyed the footage really much also. Nice city you live in! Like your personality also. Thank you. Greetings from Finland. :)
I love my XH-1
Great review! Honest, unbiased and beautiful production. I liked the use of Hendricks Gin and a lemon for the focus test. Reminds me of the James Bond Martini; 3 parts gin, 1 part Vodka, half part Lillet and a large strip of lemon peel - my favorite libation.
I'm going to purchase X-H1 and your job has told me to consider more. Thanks!
Amazing review....best out there. Top video production as well. Thanks for posting, helped me decide to wait. While longer to see if the bugs get sorted.😎🇦🇺👍
Bugs have been sorted in the meantime, even the IBIS glitches have been addressed by Fujifilm. No need to wait any more :)
Bench mark production - High class visual and sound and that Nordic light - many thanks.
Excellent review, Thank you.
I like the lcd display on the top plate which should be applied to their top models such as XT series
This is probably the first time anyone has mentioned hardness rating in any review for any camera ever.
What an amazing review! You focus on details often left out by other reviewers, thank you!
Thank you so much man, you always have the most beautiful reviews, I was waiting for that one from you and no disappointments at all, you have something special. .. my best 30 minutes watching a review this year so far.
Agreed! I was a bit reluctant at watching +30 minute review but it was excellent!
Great to see you guys are back!
The beautiful lady is very busy building her own business :) Planning another episode with her about Portrait lenses soon. stay tuned!
one of the best xh1 reviews so far. thank you so much!!!! well done!
Very interesting and complet review.
I must admit that even though the XH1 seems to be a good camera in many ways, the issu with the AF mode makes me a little scared
Great video! Great Camera! One thing- You mentioned the 18-55mm kit lens that is wonderful indeed- but the kit lens packaged with the XH1 is the 16-55mm 2.8 makes for a mighty fine pair as well with the IBIS... cheers.
Great review. Makes me want to go and get this camera.
I’ll wait for the xt3 when it comes out... put you’re right fuji lens are king
Dope! One of the best reviews I have ever seen.
There is no fans in this camera. You have only IBIS motor. But when you turn it off motor still works to keep matrix in center position. If this motor could stop the matrix could be lazy and make images more shaky.
