Can in-wall speakers ever qualify as high-end?

It's funny how much of a disconnect there is between people who are "experts" at listening to music compared to the experts that produce it. Some of the best systems in the world are installed in-wall in recording studio & mastering control rooms. Granted the whole room is purpose built and the speakers and room acoustics are tuned to the situation and that's a little different than what anybody is going to do at home. But they do it that way for a reason - it works really, really well. When done properly the speakers and the room work as a cohesive and controlled unit. Just think, many of the top quality recordings you enjoy on your hifi were mixed and mastered with an engineer making their decisions about tone, balance, and image based on what they were hearing from very high end in-wall speakers. Chances are the artists themselves listened to the final product for the first time, and approved of it, based on what they heard through those in-wall studio monitors.
The artists perhaps not, but mix & mastering engineers? It's literally their job to be critical of sound - they do it all day every day. The best ones make big bucks, literally getting paid for their ears and experience. You're totally right on that in the end sometimes decisions and compromises are made to sound good on normal systems. They often review mixes on low end, even mono speakers to hear it in different situations - so you sometimes see a few different sets of monitor speakers in a control room. But their main monitors are there to be as detailed & revealing as possible, and that was my point - a lot of higher end studios use in-walls because of the sound. It's utilitarian, they aren't trying to save space or make the room look nice or be unobtrusive like somebody might do with a home theater. They do it because it works. Paul said here he's never heard "high end" 2 channel in-wall speakers - he should take a tour of a studio! They exist, for sure.
Anthony DiPasquale my thoughts exactly ! He must have never been in a studio to hear a set of main monitors, otherwise this video would’ve went very differently.
I have a edifier s350db speaker system but I want to buy 2 in wall speakers for another room and my car but these manufacturers do not include in wall speaker portable bracket with their system so you only have the choice to cut a hole
in your beautiful wall and also you cannot install these speakers anywhere else except if you tailor made a Styrofoam bracket holder to transport these speaker in your car or in another room or at a friend party, sic. So I will wait till they include these 5$ speaker brackets. I saw a monoprice 39$ in wall 6.5 inchs pair at amazon that I want to buy when they gonna include this bracket, today I only buy the best at 1\20 the price of ten years ago for also better quality.. good music listening.
Right before the crash of 2008 Speakercraft Tantra released the Tantra 6 LCR and Tantra 8 LCR In-Wall speakers, they were pretty impressive. Fully enclosed, ported cabinets made with volcanic ash, esoteric scanspeak drivers.... It would be really interesting if Paul could get his hands on a set and test out with PS Audio amps !
I am remodeling my HOME THEATER soon ! My front speakers are 2 KLIPSCH RF-7 III , center a RC-64 III, side surrounds Pro 250 RPW , Back surrounds pro 180 RPW , for ATMOS IN CEILINGS DS-180CDT and 2 SVS SP2000 pro. My receiver is a MARANTZ SR-8012 . All the in wall speakers I going to boxed them to get better response from them . I don’t like that open baffle idea . I think you can have a high-end system like the combination i am doing ! Is just my opinion ! Thank you for another great video!

Imaging and coherence is sooooo important. Many studio engineers were taught that frequency response is everything, and as such, they are taught going against the back wall. First problem is that generally side wall, ceiling and floor will contribute more cumulatively to low frequency in/out of phase response and also, what front to back imaging do you get when you ignore that as well as loss of imaging? Also, you need to look at the whole equation (i.e. subs and monitors) just like you look at the whole room for reflections, diffusion and modes.
In-wall speakers don't have the problem with the "boundary effect" from the back of the speakers. The monitors of the best recording studios are usually "in-wall".
Yep, all the best studios use soffit mounted speakers. And typically have a set of near field on desk or stand "bookshelf" size monitors, like NS10's or Genelecs to who knows what else.

So heres a curious one. Car speakers are typically designed the same. In more a infinite baffle or leaky sealed enclosure. Would you say those couldn't be considered high end as well?
For me personally, it seems once you get to a point in the low-mid range, the enclosure comes into play. Basically, the weak point. So I've crossed over the door speakers around 300hz, and have two dedicated woofers in boxes, to do 50-350hz. Then a sub to take care of the rest. To have the front stage imaging still work, while everything else is nondirectional enough, to work together.

A pair of 4" or 5 point source speakers in the dash work great with mids in the doors and a sub. I am pretty darn happy. But doors when enclosed right act like a box, and most 300 or higher in the dash are not resistive so much, yet can use some foam to help firm up the sound. But in wall would also be like a box. You just need to seal it up, maybe strengthen it for lower end.

Drivers in the rear of a speaker and one or two in front have been done for decades. How do you have a patent on them?
Dude let me teach u 1 thing that the guys from imax thought me i bought a 11.2 klipsch system built my room little bigger and built them in the wall and sounds is wonders don't wast your time with in wall speakers that don't have enclosed boxes even they told me the klipsch architect in wall speakers are a no go
If you build the room properly you can get great sound with in walls. By that I mean make those walls stiff and the right volume..😆
Hi. I just recently one year ago bought a pair of edifier s350db speakers set because i tought it was the best sound system at the incredible low price of 300$ dollar buy wait i deeply regret to have bought these as i saw a pair of monoprice 6.5 inchs in wall speakers set for sale at 39$ a pricecables and a mini class d chinese amplifier at 18$ and im sure it is better. I will wait another 6 months for the prices to come down ( or maybe receiving this for free at chrismas ) .

Big fail for this guy, that he didn't know that the main studio monitors flash mounted in a wall give the most possible authentic (hi end) sound, because of absence of SBIR (speaker boundary interference) related distortions below the transition frequency (in bass range). Lost trust to this channel completely.
