Its actually both, you eat prior for the instant energy but your body shunts blood to the digestive system so it should be small simple carbs. After should be a protein rich meal about an hour later.

A calorie deficit means that you're burning more calories than eating. You can burn calories by exercising walking and I think its metabolism. You can track calories by using apps like myfitnessPal and mynetdairy- I use this cuz it's less complicated.
A calorie deficit means you consume a few hundred calories less then you normally would. So instead of a 2000 calorie intake you would go for a 1500 calorie intake. That is being in a deficit. A few studies have shown that being in a calorie deficit will burn about 1 lb of fat a week with weight training and other excersice
I train MMA around 6 days a week and for me personally I can train on an empty stomach as long as I’m hydrated but whenever I lift (around 2-3x a week) I need food in me or else I’ll just feel weak
I always eat before workout, I need the energy to do the movements to perfection

I work out fasted just water and L-Arginine works for me but I workout early in the morning too.
How long after you have a post workout meal?
