The Nintendo 3DS is the newcomer to the DS family which has now become a very large family and it can be hard to choose which one is right for you but I'll give you a quick break down on what each one can do for you.
Before we begin lets list the basics of which all DS models have. You get a dual screen setup with the bottom screen being a touch screen, a built in microphone and each system comes with a stylus. Now each model does has a unique difference which we will get into as we compare each model.
We'll start off with the DS Lite which I feel is the DS model that really launched the platform. It was an upgrade and a step up from the original DS which was much more bulky and didn't have the sleek design that the new DS Lite came with and a much brighter screen which was needed. One unique feature of the DS Lite is that it was the last of the DS to come with a GBA slot which was key for those that were upgrading from their Game Boy Advance or Game Boy Advance SP. This was the model that made the DS the game changer that it promised to be.
After the success of the DS Lite Nintendo decide to step up the game a little bit more but lose a little something with the introduction of the DSi. I had a DSi but I traded it in a year later for a DSi XL which both had pretty much the same hardware features with the larger screens as the biggest difference so we will use the DSi XL as the example for the DSi lineup. The DSi lineup came with a bit brighter of a screen, new dual camera setup with one internal and one external. Unfortunately no GBA slot which was a disappointment to many out there and signaled the end of GBA support and GBA games in general. For me that was a bit sad because two GBA games that I was still playing were Super Mario Advanced 4 which was Super Mario Brothers 3 (Greatest Mario game ever in my opinion), and also The Legend of Zelda: Minnish Cap was another great game with good replay value. For this reason I kept my Game Boy Advance SP and DS Lite around.
And now we are here with the new Nintendo 3DS and while its definitely a member of the DS family I wouldn't call it the new more powerful younger brother but more of a cousin in a new line of the family. The 3DS introduces powerful graphics that rival GameCube and Wii graphics. It also introduces real 3D gaming without the need of glasses with other new items such as an analog stick, a 3rd external camera to take 3D pictures and take advantage of augmented reality technology (AR), a new "Home" button in the middle of start and select and a 3D slider to adjust the depth of the 3D from all the way up to completely off and back to 2D and a accelerometer and gyroscope to round of the new stuff. With these new additions and the innovations from the DSi the 3DS is the most powerful and advanced DS system out there among the rest of the DS family.
Now in comparison when it comes to size the DS LIte, DSi, and 3DS are about exactly the same size and design and nearly the same weight give or take an ounce or two. The DSi XL is the big boy in the family and is a little bit heavier and not as pocketable as the others but the DSi XL main focus is no so much on pocketablity as it is it focused on users looking for a larger screen and gameplay area.
With 4 models to choose from you can really find the one that fits you. The Nintendo DS Lite is definitely for those with a large Game Boy Advance lineup that are not ready to move totally yet and still want to have the ability to player newer games and not have to carry two devices to do it. The DSi/DSi XL is for those looking to get their first DS system and want to wait to see where 3D gaming goes on the Nintendo 3DS and save a little bit of money and don't have a large GBA game lineup. The 3DS is for those that are ready to make the jump to 3D, gain the most graphics power out of all the DS family and still have the ability to play DS games and also have access to the eventually virtual console store to grab old Game Boy, Game Boy Advance, classic games and even Turbo Graphic 16 and Game gear games as well.
If you are in the market for the DS you will find that there is a model that will suit you. You can't go wrong with any of the models available and you will get a great gaming experience from any DS you choose - Věda a technologie
I love my dad he had to work extra time to get me a 3ds xl and I always play it
My dad buy me a psp Because I have a 9/10 in the elementary school result and he didn't buy me anything else that day
@@linkheroofgalaxy5925 ok why. Why did you comment this?
This is so wholesome
good dad'n
Great dad and appreciative son
2020 and im still looking at ds systems.
2021, for me I’m doing the exact same
@@havocadvent2 check out super mario galaxy ds its amazing
Same. Picked up a DS lite for GBA games / migration and a DSi XL for DS games. The DSi XL has the best screen out of every system for original DS games, trust me.
July 2021: same
2022 man😂
I would say the DSi. It is still my favourite because the screens are so vibrant and it is the best way to play DS games without them being pizelated on a bigger screen. I also like the size and slim design and it fits perfectly in my hands. Yes the online features are useless now but man what a great console.
Glad that this was able to help you out.
the moment he struggled to put the stylus in the side of the 3ds
and then remembered its supposed to go on the top ;-;
Yes
@@mounttai5182 I was in 4th grade when the 3ds came to stores
Idk i just love ds lite for some reason. Prob because i had it for years an it been by my side for ever. Never leaves my sight at all. Sitting there waiting to be turned on. An for your birthday it lets u draw in rainbow colors ;3.
the dsi lets you draw in rainbow colors whenever you want
But doing it when ever you want doesn't make it special :3
This made me laugh too hard
you are right and I'm still using it but my others died but my first one never left me ;)
Similar but with the dsi (due to nostalgia). Sadly I no longer have it anymore. Imma get a new ds soon, but it will probably be ds lite due to the gba slot.
cant believe I used to play on such a small screen lol
You ever played psone games on the vita?
same😂
I used To Play Big Screen
That dude also has huge hands
I can't believe you used to be small.
I remember watching this video as a kid back in 2012. I was so obsessed with wanting a 3ds that I would constantly watch these type of videos, I thankfully received a 3DS XL in August of that year.
DS Lite. DS games and GBA slot. Only way to go for me. That and the 3DS......someday.
3DS gets 3DS games and DS games with virtual console
Yeah, that's great and all but
1. Better to play what you've already paid for rather than pay more money on the store
2. You have to start from the beginning of the game
3. It's just cool!
you play the game for fun not for completing.
wildsmileyp
I have to go with the DSi. Because the DS Lite has a GBA slot sure. But the DSi and it’s nostalgic applications make it the best DS for me.
I had the DSi XL and I love it! Big screens, DS games... it hasn't got the GBA slot but I never bought a Game Boy Advance... I always wanted a DS with the camera, the shop... I love my DSi XL! 😘
Thanks a lot! I was looking for a video like this for a long time. It really helped me :)
very helpful video... the only one like it on the internet after several minutes of searching for something like this. Thank You so much.
I've had my DSL lite since I was 6 it's still works and it's awesome
Dang… give us an update in 2021
Thank you. That was pretty helpful. Still not sure what I want though. I like the bigger screen of the XL, but I want the more powerful hardware and ability to play new 3DS games, but I also have a collection of GBA games that look amazing on my DS Lite. I think I'd probably stick with my Lite and eventually get a 3DS. The XL screen is bigger by %, but honestly, until they make something that outputs to a real tv, a handheld screen is still a handheld screen.
Well I’m a little late but the Nintendo switch is hand held and can do on the tv so I hope this helps
Ive been thinking of buying a 3DS, ( I currently have the DS Lite) and have been trying to find out what the differences were. This video really helped thanks!!!
thanks. this made it easier to explain the differences are them to my nephew. and it was a good stroll down memory lane...
It's true that the larger screen size on the XL decreases the picture quality slightly. But overall I think that the 90% larger XL's screen size makes up for it.
Just bought a 3DS. I'm gonna keep my DS Lite though, it has Pokemon Emerald.
the new ruby & saphire is coming out soon!!!
Pokemon Emerald is the shit! but i would recommend getting a 3ds/2ds/3dsxl for the remake that are coming out in november.
***** I'm gonna do the DSboy mod to my DS lite, purely for the classic Pokemon GBA game, it's the only Generation in the franchise I haven't played. q.q
Ollisaurus REX Yeah, I did the same mod to my DS Lite. Makes a pretty good GBA.
Alex Downs :D
your ds and 3ds videos are so excellent!
Your voice and delivery is amazing!
Seeing as I can play DS and GBA games on the DS Lite, that still seems like the way to go.
Gba games are like $100 now 😢 unless you have them already
tbh DS last wasyyy longer than phones and tablets i got mine back in 2010 when i was 6 and it works perfectly fine but... todays kinds will never know about pictochat😂
*way
*kids
I remember picto chat but it never really worked and not enough people had a ds to use it. :(
@ateb3 if they were anywhere between 10 and 13 years old at the time they'd be an adult now.
Also they said kinds. Not kids. But that could have been a typo or auto correct
Ur still a kid. U won't know what the pain of rewinding a vhs was like. Consider urself lucky
@@gibbiegibson7874 yeah just get a screw or something big and stick it on the left circle.
Years later, this is still helpful since I am trying to make a decision on one so I can play some oldie but goodie games that I miss.
What did you decide on?
@@reyjanriosa8492 I ended up getting the DSi. But, I then finally got a Switch which had some of the games I liked, so, my DSi isn’t used the way I thought I would.
Thanks for making this I needed to know this
My ds lite brings back so many good memorys
I still have my very first gameboy, gameboy pocket (green), gb advance sp (red), original ds, ds light (red), and now I need a 3ds. I think I want the xl version for the bigger screen!
Great job explaning comparing, very helpful!
Man I feel old
I can not believe that the ds lite was released over 10 years ago. I remember getting mine for Christmas when I was 8, great video btw
I've always had the original DS, and I prefered it from the DS Lite because of the dpad. The original ds dpad felt so much better and clicky which I liked. I had since it came out, and I finally upgraded to a 3DS XL
I have to say i really miss the gba slot on my ds lite. I was extremely dissapointed when my 3ds xl didn't have it
Your review was very helpful and all. Thanks for sharing this.
Been thinking of getting a DS, mostly just to play pokemon games and relive most of my childhood, but you have persuaded me to get the DS Lite! if its the only one that can play GBA games then thats all what counts, thanks for the video!
DS Lite + DSi = Life
Danny Measho DS Lite - DSi = Lte
chugkingchris we here 9 years later 😂😂
Thats another thing. WHY would they remove the GBA slot? It seems like nintendo is taking steps back in design choices.
Man I feel like i'm carrying around a relic more and more each time I see a ds comparison video. Nobody ever talks about the first ds,and I actually had the red one none of those boring colors lol. I've been looking for videos about the 3ds/3dsxl and what not because I think it's finally time to get a new nintendo handheld lol
This comparison helped alot
Should I get the dsi or D's lite, cause the store that I go to buy games has ds lite for only $30 and dsi $45. Which one?
Ds lite. You can play gba games on it.
Depends. My cousin gave me his DS lite for his DSi. In my opinion the price matters. So it is the DS lite.
If software matters to you it is the DSi.
DS Lite. I have one that is 9 years old. Has NUMEROUS games and etc.
DSi u can play gba games on ur phone or online
STUKTURTLEZ but you need an emulator to do that as in you need to get a GBA emulator on your phone or other device and not everyone knows how to do that and it would take quite some time and it could be complicated
i remember when i was a kid at school my freinds would sneak garbage games on their phone to school
but I was playing the best games on my ds
Phones are no professional for nothing
thanks man that realy helps cuz i am geting a 3Ds this week and want to know some more stuff about it. thank you
Luv my nds Lite. So much memories ❤
A part of my life never give it away for a modern new one !!!!
Nintendo needs to make a DS Lite XL that supports DS, GBA, GBC, & possibly GB Games. Add wifi compatibility and a headphone jack and leave the charging and touch screen functions the rest of the functions are unnecessary.
they wont the DS lite DSi DS and DSi XL is outdated by the 3DS 3DS XL and 2DS
The 3ds has all of those cuz u can download them
I have a DS Lite. Works wonderfully and it's 9 years old. Got it for my 7th birthday.
NickOhio Productions has the battery ever gone bad to where you need to replace it
FozzyBear Chicken Nope.
NickOhio Productions I have it 11 years olny problem is the sylus falls out but i put it out and use my finger
NickOhio Productions I am 9 my first was a ds light then a ds i then a 3ds then that is all i want
+NickOhio Productions I got mine for christmas 2007 with new super mario bros, and it was the mario special edition :P
I LOOKED IT UP AND IT LOOKS AWESOME THANKS!
Hey, um, is there anyway to get sound on montage? its frikin annoying when i record an awesome video with sound and it dont play sound
I have a ds lite
its broken
whenever i turn it on it will be all white
X 1 stan .
Wait.. Can I Play Nintendo ds games on the 3ds?
YES YOU CAN😀
Xoez why would you NOT be able to?
Stratilex the graphical difference... and also it isn't the exact same port, the 3ds has a little lip thing on the top left (I think, it might be on the right l, I can't remember)
Xoez yes you definitely can
Thanks everybody :D
I have the DSi and i got it when it was first released. Still works like a charm
Wow a black collection are they your brothers!
Alexis Perez no they’re hers lmaoo
Super helpful video, thanks!!
6:39 WTF
?
@@mariomason95 he put the stylus on top aaaa
I need the lite cuz my dsi touchscreen got ligma and I need a way to play gba games
Get a Nintendo Switch lite or the original
Looks like you've been waiting for this for a whole year, so I'll humor you. Whats ligma?
@@Everything_Animal ligma balls lol
You really got me good
What do you recommend? I haven't had a DS before and I'm confused as to which one is the best.
Do you think it's worth upgrading my 3DS for it? or shall I wait for the next handheld?
We have a new vs and it's the Nintendo 3DS vs 3DS XL vs 2DS. Check it out and thanks for support this video!!! Nintendo 3DS vs 3DS XL vs 2DS Review
you can play 3d games on the dsi
What about the New 3DSi xl

***** my little son was playing on my computer, there was no reason to get sarcastic with a child let alone anyone who's searching for knowledge. That was very ignorant.
OK

And IIIIIIIIIIII will always love youuu-
Is this a New 3DS XL?....
Suddenlyyy life has new meaning to mE
dude this was 8 years ago how could it be the new 3ds
So which one is the biggest in size? Still having trouble figuring it out.
Great review man!! Thanks
DS lite is COOL
Randi McGreish no that sucks
Nintendo Fan but it doesn't also the D-pad of the DSI and above feels weird
I have it
and then the fugly 2ds came out
Super Pony 3 I have one and it's comfortable as fk
While it's not the most beautiful thing in the world, it's still affordable, fun and has no real game limitations.
I grown to love the look especially the blue.
Super Pony 3 we don't mention that here
Nah, 2ds was for kids to have their first handheld, Its safer without the 3d for their eyes, and it's only 80$ Then came the New 2ds XL, which has the classic ds design. So no complain.
One of the best reviews i've ever seen congratulations :)
hello every body i'm going to buy nentindo 3ds
but which is better in you opeinion the regular one or xl 3ds ??
which one should i buy
Just bought a dsi xl at source (Canadian electronics store) for $43 on Clearence. Check that shit out
I bought one in good condition for 30 dollars exactly in Kijii.
U missed the first ds
READ THE TITLE OF THE VIDEO
Thank you! Good Review... My 4 yr old son has been driving crazy to buy him a Nintendo DS.. And I had no idea what the difference was from all the models.
Ti ñy yo
Yo i know this video is old but im getting a grip for my DS lite that was made for the original 3ds, do you think that it will fit properly? if your video it looks like the ds lite is the same size as the OG 3ds, i dont have an OG 3ds to check with unfortunately.
The ds look the same size but they are diff. It wouldn't fit in the same. It would wobble a bit.
i wish i could have a ds lite😢😣😡
You could have mine it still works but the top screen doesn't work and the hinge is loose
So do I, but what color should I get?
+Josh Caviness I would go for white or red/black they look sick
+Captain Broz I'll go with red/black. So it could match with my 3ds.
Thats like 3 dollars lol
who's watching this video 2017?
Alpha
The question is... who is NOT watching this video in 2017!
jswagga86 me
@Gordonlou ur dumb ur in 2018
RIP DSi shop
I need some help & advice. I have the old pokemon games like crystal, emerald, firedred, leafgreen & ruby. I heard dat on the dsi you can play the old gameboy & ds games. The thing is I already got a gameboy sp & charger I have for awhile. I was thinking of going for a 3ds instead of dsi for pokemon black & white 2. I heard it got better graphics, can watch netflix etc The thing is it doesnt got a gameboy slot sadly. I heard you still can play old ds game on 3ds but you cant play 3ds on dsi.
i bought one a month ago and its great, much more comfortable and makes reading and writing on the screen much easier
Can you play ocarina of time and starfox 64 on the DSI or do you have to have a 3DS PLEASE ANSWER!!!!
and how it it? because my ds lite broke too and i con't choose between 3ds and 3ds xl...
Really appreciate the info... Very helpful!
One of my school's had lots of dsis, u could use them once uv finished your work, I played with them loads with my friends. Now, I have a 3ds and my little brother and sister have a 2ds
i'm thinking of 3ds just because of it's shape it's small and light
you didn't answer me what is the analog stick ??
i'm trying to read about it but i can't understand my english isn't that good
i saw something weird we have to put it on the 3ds but it's realy stupid and weird
so, i still confuse hehehe~
please tell me what should i buy? some ppl said dsi is better than dsi xl bcos dsi xl have less game, but some review in my country said ds lite is even worth cos u can download some game on internet :D
actually, i just want to play super mario if nintendo still have it, cos i have psp and the mario is suck -_-
and i want the battery life more longer, so which one of they three who have good battery?
and if i buy 3ds, could i hear music with screen close?
btw thanks
great review man
man this brings memory's when the first ipod came out I had this Nintendo ds lite
can u still play regular ds games on the 3ds like pokemon soulsilver?
What is the best version of NDS I should get to play the broadest amount of NDS games with the best performance/experience?
I like the dsi xl because of the size. Should I get the dsi xl or would it be better to get the 3ds cause it's newer??????? PLEASE RESPOND😃
HELP ME! what should i buy Psp, Psvita or Nintendo and if nintend wich one i dont know what to buy >.
Thank you...I needed this information. Buying my son's 1 one for his 7th birthday.
Im planning on buying a ds lite cause ive always wanted to play game boy games in the best way possible and at the same time play some ds games to but mainly game boy games
Just get a 3ds and mod it to play gba games, ds games, and 3ds games
can't believe it's been that long
Is there an.adapter or some.to play sp games on dsi?
exuse me but after augest can you make anouther video like this cause there will be a 3ds xl coming out on augest 19 im preordering tomarrow also $25 dollers for pre-order.
For me on my gameboy sp I mostly play pokemon crystal & emerald mostly those are my two best & updated flies. I just found out that the nintendo lite don't play the orginal gameboy color/advance games only gameboy sp games. That knocks out pokemon crystal & only have emerald. That kinda change my mind of getting the newer version like 3ds or 3ds xl. If I do get the 3ds does it play the old ds games like pokemon diamond, pearl, platium, soul sliver, heartgold, black & white? & make them 3d?
Hey he said they made games especially for the DSi XL, anyone know wich they are?
which one do you recommend
where do you get the 3ds xl?
which one would you recommend
I have a DS Lite and DSI. But sadly, my DSI, does not work. Does yours work?
guys i am confused i have never played nintendo ds so i dunt know anything about them...
I see ds, dsi, ds lite, 3ds, 3dsi.... does the game works in all of them?? or dey all have seperate game
now i got it
but after thinking for long time i decided to go to the store and see the diffrence but i didn't fing 3ds xl (i think it didn't came out in my county) so i bought the regular one and i realy like it it's so small and cute i have no problems with it and all the games i like doesn't need the analog stick
thank you sooo much for ur help (: you are the only one who respond on me
Can I play newer Pokémon games on previous DS releases?
sonu can put games from de gameboy andvance into the ds lite?
there IS something close to flipnote, its called swapnote and its pretty fun cuz you get to send "notes" to your friends online and on streetpass so i think its better than the flipnote on the DSI (once you buy the 3DS you have to download the swapnote feature from the shop) hope this helped!
butb@dayoung kim i have the original to and it hasnt broken. but you can try checking to see if any of the wires are broken
Great review.
they can easily do it, but the games that require correct resolution, they can give you the choice to have the original resolution or stretch it. and they could make games that could fit both screens
i like to play visual novel games. is it worth buying nintendo 3ds or ds lite or ps vita?
which one is the games cheaper?
just get a 3ds or 2ds because it has reverse compatible anyway and wouldn't have that much problems due to software updates etc
ds games look shite on the 3ds
