There was a reason they called Frank Sinatra "The Voice." He would be the pop music equivalent of the operatic vocal perfection of Luciano Pavarotti. And frankly, at this point his age is starting to show in his voice. What he has left is still far more than many vocalists have at their peak. And the slightly worn edge that's entered his voice particularly fits this song. As his technique slightly faded, his depth of understanding became stronger. If you listen to some of his earlier stuff, it will be somewhat more polished, but you won't find that knowledge that only comes with age that shines through in this performance.

We played it at my grandad's funeral, he was born in London in '51, but spent the last 20 or so years of his life living in southern Wales. He was an avid Frank fan, the only singer he liked more was James Taylor, so we had "My Way" playing as the pall bearers carried him in, and "You've Got a Friend" as we all left. It's a perfect send-off song, truly :)

Fun fact: "My way" was first a french song, music composed by Jacques Revaux in 1967. It was sung by a very famous french singer, Claude François (who died tragically in 1979 at 39, it was a national drama, kind of like when Elvis died in the US). The song was called back then "Comme d'habitude" (as usual) and told the sad and common story of a couple living together but no longer loving each other, going through the motions of life and pretend love. It's quite sad.
Then it was adapted in english and became "My way" in 1969, I believe.
Jacques Revaux must be the richest guy on the planet thanks to a single song!

Thank you for reacting to Frank Sinatra. My mother was what they called a bobby-soxer back in the day and would stand outside whatever venue Frank was playing at in NYC and scream with all the rest of the young girls. But my father loved the Blues and Jazz, so I'm going to recommend you react to Koko Taylor doing Let The Juke Joint Jump. Not only will your leg be jumping, but you'll want to get up and dance like you never have before..

Before there were the Beatles, before there was Elvis, there was Frank Sinatra. Back in th 40s (before my time, lol) Frank Sinatra was the singer the girls went nuts over. They were called "bobby soxers". His career went on for decades. He refused to sing rock n roll songs, but still had numerous hits during the rock era. In '66, he had his biggest hit "Strangers in the Night" which knocked the Beatles from the # 1 spot on the hit parade. He was also a great actor, and won an Oscar for "From Here to Eternity". You can make a good argument that Frank Sinatra was the biggest star of the 20th century.

A version that brings tears to my eyes is when Andre Rieu and his orchestra and singers did this on stage at Radio City Hall in New York, they had a big screen showing people in the audience reacting to this and footage of immigrants arriving on boats to New York, it was in homage to Frank Sinatra, Andre Rieu is a famous violin 🎻 player. I’m Italian American, so have listened to Sinatra, since I was born. It’s such a joy to watch you discover his music and hear his fabulous voice for the first time! He was not just a popular sensation but an astonishing musician with phrasing nobody could match! I love his music from the fifties when his voice was perfect, anything he did by Cole Porter, later his work with Brazilian jazz, Antonio Carlos Jobim. He was just the best and so glad you enjoyed him!

  • @OperaJH
    @OperaJH Před 4 lety +2

    Thanks for another fun reaction!
This song was written for Frank by another great performer, Paul Anna, who had been a teen idol. (You should check him out too)
Frank had decided at around 55 or 60, that he wanted to retire. So this was his farewell song. It became such a huge hit, every singer male and female recorded it - more males of course!
After about 4 years away, Sinatra was lured back into performing and he released a great album called Ol’ Blues Eyes is Back and went on to another, hugely successful part of his enduring career.
He was a crooner ( which means singing lightly and warmly), but his phrasing was legendary, making his style excellent for jazz and swing as well as for ballads of all kinds - even Beatles’ songs.
Sinatra always did my favorite rendition of this song, but you can hear the strain in his voice for the big notes, although he does arrive at them pretty well. That was why he wanted to retire - while he was still at the top of his game, it was getting harder for him to hit the big notes and his audiences knew it, but nobody minded!
Later, coming back out of retirement , many of his songs had to be transposed down a note or two.
Again, although we were all aware, nobody minded because Sinatra always had style and he knew well how to handle his voice, as he grew older. He could charm you with it until the very end. Frank Sinatra truly was one of the greatest performing legends to ever grace the world.
You can check out his older hits like
    Come Fly With Me
    Fly Me To the Moon
    Nice n’ Easy
    Love and Marriage
Something Stupid - huge hit in the late 60’s
You will find a huge number of songs!
