I caught the refrence to "The Thing" you did there. The Norwegian and American expeditions huh? Actually what they found was an evolved form of the shoggoths that was coming home to share it's new abilities with it's descendants. It's ancestors also would have been from the Antarctica region being the elder things creation.
At least that's the head canon that I'm going with.
