  • This is the Allegro from Canon I, TWV 40:118-123 by G. P. Telemann. This vibrant piece of music is the third movement of
    Sonata I from G.P. Telemann’s 18 Melodious Canons
or Six Sonatas in Duet. Originally written for two
flutes, Telemann scored these canons to be played
by other instruments as well. It works perfectly with
two guitars because it sits in the tonality of G Major,
which is a common key in the guitar repertoire.
Since it is a canon, the two parts match one another
exactly, except that guitar 2 starts one measure after
    guitar 1.
The first 8 measures of the melody will be repeated
many times throughout the piece giving almost a
rondeaux feeling to the structure. The canon starts
with a syncopated figure that will be played many
times, which could be rhythmically challenging so
be sure to isolate that figure in order to execute it
properly as well as to sync it up with the other part.

This video is performed by Dave Belcher and Nicoletta Todesco and recorded at Yale University by Matthew LeFevre and Benjamin Schwartz.
