Dubois’s going to thrive with the Caps and now the Caps are finally going back to true contention, landing in the top 3 in the Metro Division standings. I kinda feel bad for LA, I always rooted for them as a Western Conference team and especially in the playoffs against Edmonton, but I think they could be on their way out of being a playoff team by the expense of teams like the Blues, the Flames or the Kraken.
As a kings fan I never saw this coming. I expect a buy out before a trade, but rob said we wouldn’t buy him out. Needless to say, after watching every game with him… I’m happy with the trade.

You can't fix a player who gives no effort. I suspect he was a locker room issue, because there's no way teammates as competitive as Doughty would sit back and let a player do nothing. Glad he's gone. It is such a relief to no longer wonder how the Kings are going to deal with that distraction for 7 more years!
@@ATHIP12Doughty did call out (at one after game media scrum) that there were SOME players on the Kings team that needed to look into the mirror and start upping their game. He did this after Todd McClellan was fired & the coaching change. Everyone knew then who he was referring to. Doughty addressed this situation in such a way that Dubois could have responded & been still a teammate in good standing but it seems things never got better. Wouldn't be surprised if that was the catalyst for the trade.
It’s possible that a deal to get rid of PLD was in the works all along, when the calls for a buyout (and Blake’s head) started
Ngl the Caps offence may be pretty interesting next season, adding Dubois and having that group of youngsters with high upside all getting serious looks at camp

No, I wouldn't be surprised if MacLellan made this happen by approaching Blake and offering the trade. Dubois, in some ways, is sort of a brilliant pickup for the Caps. If Dubois continues his ways, the Caps will just tear the team down in two years and warehouse Dubois through the prime of his career until it's attractive to buy out his contract. Or he can turn into the world-class player he can be and be a key part of the team's next era. The choice is up to him. But Washington isn't going to sweat the worst-case scenario. Dubois was probably the best player the Caps could get this summer because elite free agents aren't going to sign with the Caps right now.

Considering what PLD was moved for, I'd say those other teams were only kicking tires and not seriously interested. That or they wanted retention from LA and/or sweeteners put in. Either way, I'd say this shows how PLD's reputation and value around the league is in a bottomless pit.
With Washington I'm not that shocked. PLD has issues, but presumably he can funnel pucks to Ovechkin just fine. The Capitals probably aren't going to be great, but if their focus is that record this makes sense. Even if they are stuck with that contract going into a rebuild...they'll need bodies on the roster anyways.
I think PDL isn't going to enjoy feeding a flat footed ovi and we're going to see some drama between them before December.
Now we wait and see how long it takes Pierre-Luc Ducapfriendly to start crying and request a trade out of Washington.

It's not likely that Dubois is dumb. If he's not, he knows he can't request another trade, not publicly at least. He can't do anything he's done before because Washington could basically just warehouse him through the prime of his career while they tear the team down and rebuild. The Caps aren't trying to win a Cup. Not really. MacLellan knows Dubois has two choices: to be the player he's capable of being or fade into irrelevance. Because if he ruins this opportunity, his career is over. Because the Caps aren't going to buy him out anytime soon. They don't need to.

The Caps should pick up Mikael Granlund to pass the puck and dish out assists. He could replace Backstrom and help Ovi chase the record. 69GP/12G/48A/60Pts. Dubois and Granlund could easily replace Backstrom and Kuzy. Granlund has 1 year at $5AAV.
Also shows how atrocious the Kings goalie situation has been since they got rid of Quickie.
The Hurricanes Cup window completely ended after these past playoffs, half of their team now is either UFAs or RFAs. This past playoffs was literally their last chance to get it done and their own GM literally walked out on them because of this.
Tbh if you put ovi, wilson and him on a line that could be best in the league easy. People would be scared to play defensively against 3 monsters that can skate and shoot.

I think this is a good trade for Washington, because of where they are at with the competitiveness, there is no pressure on PLD. Wsh can retain half and trade him easy, and get a good haul for him around trade deadline.

@@sharkusvelarde Pld is actually a good top 6 forward, he has loads of talent but hasnt figured out the motivation part of his work ethic. He is still young and could figure this out, also when pld begins to play well(which he is fully capable of doing) his stock will rise again, his potential is still high but people forget that.
The problem tends to be that when people rightfully bash his play many forget that he is still quite talented.
Washington if they retained half his salary(they can afford this) would no doubt have many suitors looking for top 6 help(he is a center too). With a manageable cap hit and providing pld is doing ok at the time, they would get quite alot for him, especially finding a team in need of depth at the deadline.
Id take the risk with this trade
The Capitals power play should be much better with Dubois. But I am worried about him in 5 on 5, especially if he's on the same line as Ovechkin.

I read an article from RMNB that apparently PLD loves playing with Russian players and the way Russian players play the game. That's an interesting bit to bring up.
As a caps fan, we sold kuz and mantha, backstrom is done, we need new players badly, we have lindgren as a nr1, so darcy wont be that missed, we need at least a new defender, and 2 decent forwards, otherwise next season will be a pain to watch. Happy about dubois tho, have a feeling him and strome could be a decent partnership, class player, if he stays lol

Lizotte is probably not gonna be signed, Danault is gonna be the 3C, Byfield is gonna move back to center on the 2nd line.
Danault will be 3C. Byfield 2C or potentially 1C. Kopitar will ideally be playing 2C behind Byfield.

Really, the only piece they gave up for Dubois that they're seriously missing is Vilardi and the jury is still out on whether/not Gabe can be an impact player for a full 82 game season. Iafallo is a 3rd liner and was replaced pretty easily. Kupari is a fringe 4th liner. Who knows on the 2nd round pick - And if you want to argue it was basically Durzi since it's the pick they got from trading Durzi - I'd argue they don't miss Durzi all that much with Clarke and Spence still in the organization. Now of course you also have to factor in the year of Dubois playing miserable hockey for $8.5m and the fact that they needed to take on Kuemper to get rid of Dubois but still, there's a path forward now that could set the Kings up for success next year. Just have to hope Blake makes a couple good moves/signings and a couple young players continue to progress.
