Classic Game Room breaks out another amazing video game review of the classic 1987 controller for the Nintendo Entertainment System, the NES ADVANTAGE!!! Hell yeah, get the advantage in games like 1943 and Star Soldier! Use the arcade style joystick and turbo buttons to your advantage to kick the crap out of hordes of enemy airplanes and space ships. The NES Advantage is easy to find at online auctions like ebay and has tremendous build quality. It withstands the test of time well and just feels like a real arcade joystick. It also had a unique slow feature which would pause and unpause the game. It could be used for one or two player games like Super Mario Brothers Bros. where you didn't play against each other, but rather switched between 1 and 2 players. The turbo buttons are rock solid and variable, you can adjust independently of each other. You simply can't go wrong with the most well designed old school classic video game fighting or arcade style joystick controller ever made. Get the advantage! Does not work with Xbox 360, Playstation 2 PS2, Playstation 3 PS3 or Wii Virtual Console. Does work for the Nintendo. One of the best accessories out there (there were lots of neat and bizarre add-ons for the NES like ROB the Robot and that weird ass power glove.) See gameplay of one in action! Games like Contra, Metroid and Bionic Commando will work with the NES Advantage. - Zábava
for some reason i always come back to this every couple years for the nostalgia and how you hyped up the controller. i love the NES advantage
About time to return once again then, right? :)
My cousin had one. We would occasionally break it out when we couldn't beat a game. It just didn't entirely feel like cheating fir some games. Like the stairwell in Ghostbusters.
I remember back in the 80s flipping through the pages of my Nintendo Power magazine and coming across advertisements for this bad boy. It's just a beast, and after viewing your video I actually want to get a hold of one just to stick it on a shelf in my office as a memento, a piece of nostalgia.
I just picked up one of these at a flea market for only 8 bucks!
This well bring you back with this vid
I remember playing Blaster Master with turbo fire and getting an excitement i don’t think iv had since. Wow 11 yrs ago and then it was still like 23 yrs old. Slow down time! Plz 🙏
Turbo=80s term for spamming the a button.
That's actually what people call it even today (I think some people prefer to call it autofire but whatever)
I've held on to mine since childhood, it's still sitting right beside my TV :D
I still have mine after so may years. Although I haven't used it in a while, it still works perfectly and works great.
Sounds like I need one because of how cool it sounds alone
Yeah, I remember the NES Advantage. Believe it or not, I actually bought two. I would have them both plugged into my NES and I would invite friends over to play Contra, Castlevania, Super Mario Bros and many many other. This controller holds a very special place in my heart.
I love how your voice is in sync with the music in the first half of the review
I like all the dramatic shots you used in this video. You should definitely try that again for the next bit of hardware you review.
Great joystick, creat review, cute lil puppy. Your stuff is just getting better and better.
15 y/o, received an NES with 2 controllers and this beauty. Never looked at my wii the same way again.
I still have my original advantage from 1987, it still works and looks like new. I remember paying $50.00 USD for the advantage. One of the more expensive accessories and I believe the most expensive joystick for the NES. The advantage by far was my favorite accessory for the NES and it sat perfectly on top of my NES console.
Funny you mention that, I saw this controller and flashed back to using it on the Statue of Liberty level in the Ghostbusters 2 game back in the day. I just remembered they actually used an Advantage in the movie lol.
awesome music man good times with this thing
I ordered one of these and set up a table and chair right near my NES so it's ready when it comes! Ahh can't wait to play Double Dragon and TMNT!
I had this controller. Playing 1943 is fun with the controller, as well as other shooters. I also liked playing certain sport games with the joystick, such as Tecmo Bowl.
I love the Advantage. Picked one up last year. Plays great with games like Rad Racer and Top Gun. I really dig the weight and design. Doesn't feel cheap at all. Durable as all hell, too. Just like the majority of Nintendo products.
I have a great interest for such peripherals that being the reason I amassed quite a collection of a variety of video game oriented hardware I happen to have about 8-10 of this certain product in one of my filing cabinets.
It's a funny thing that this video and one other video got me into ASMR.
The NES Advantage: great for shooters.
NES Advantage! Awesome! I love this controller. It's so awesome. Good review of it Mark.
-Karatekamaster
I got one of these just for gunsmoke and shooters that are like it. The nes max is great but this is perfect for shooters.
Picked up mine yesterday at the Goodwill Store,... for 6 bucks,.... it's so sweet!
It looks amazing! I never had those. I had some cheap plastic things that you snapped together around your regular NES controller for joysticks. To Ebay I go!
I LOVE THIS THING!
I was LUCKY to get one at a second hand store a few years ago...it was the only one I ever saw!!!
Its beautiful!
A piece of collection!!!!
Cool controller CGR publishing company.
Playing Megaman would be awesome with this controller. The Turbo function makes it automatically easier, thus making it a bit less frustrating to kill enemies.
The advantage is an epic controller, great build quality! a first class peripheral.
Get one! I finally got myself an NES a week ago, and an NES Advantage today. It is totally worth your money. The NES has so many fantastic games, many on ebay for no more than £3! =D
Man these were the days the old cgr was pure awesomeness
i just got one as a gift from a friend since he never used it.... the control stick fells super weird since it doesn't even have that typical click sound to it... and its rather stiff, not too stiff but it feels a little odd... is that normal?
Another great review, the button click sounds so great, I'm on Ebay now to check prices =P
I got one for $4. I cleaned it up and it truly is awesome!
The NES advantage is WONDERFUL. I recently bought a Nintendo and I picked this up right alongside it b/c of its amazing quality for an arcade controller. My B button on the unit I have sticks a little bit, but its fixable, and understandable as someone before me owning this particular unit probably used it way too much.
Unscrew it apart easily then clean all the dirt, dirty food fingers, etc.. out with rubbing alcohol and q-tips then put back together. I'm waiting for my advantage cntrl. to come in the mail I got off of Ebay and can't wait to do that even if it isn't to dirty or have sticky buttons. I've cleaned all my cntrlrs. this way including the max which was very dirty they all function like new now :).
My favorite game to use it with was Track & Field. You had to dial it in just right to get maximum speed.
Another situation to do such thing is firing the lazer gun in contra
i dont have my nes anymore, but i should really just buy one of these cos when i was a kid,i used to dream of owning the NES Advantage Stick.it was the holy gtail of gaming.real talk.
The Advantage is a fantastic controller. Works very well, is durable, and like the video says, it has things you won't find today even on controllers.
It's kind of a pain for some games, but overall I'd give it a 10/10 no question. The old arcade feel to it is awesome. Buy one if you can find it somewhere!
Got it from Game Xchange. They had two for around $10, and one that rattled for $4.
Just opened it up with a phillips head and took out the little plastic wire shielding that was making it rattle. SWEEEEEEEET!
I used to have one. I liked it.
Thanks Parodeyz, I'll check that out.
This is a wonderfull mega controller and i like it!!!i instal this in a old arcade box i buy in antique store, with a 26 inch flat tv screen and a dolby 5.1 sound system that is hot!!!
that music is awesome! ;)
if u r asking what it is its a turbo controller just like this but this was an arcade tabletop styled controller
Dahm that controller looks good!!!I hope i can find one!!
Can this work with a retron 2 or do the controller ports need to be right next to each other?
+afrocoleman You can buy extension cables
Me and my family never had one of these . When I was a kid when we had our Nintendo NES . We just had the standard controllers . We never had an NES advantage .
I have one but I need a working nes, I think ours has given up the ghost because no games are working in it at the moment. It is a really great controller!
I just won an auction with the NES adventage... after seeing this, I really wants to have it RIGHT NOW.
I have the SNES advantage too, btw...it's awesome, but hard to play with xD
@FreudRulz actually, that was on the back of the box. it literally brought that up. "Defeat the firebreathing dragon in Super Mario Brothers using rapid fire for unbeatable quick fireball tossing"
Wow ! what a nice controller
Hello all! Could anyone tell me, check me, is the A bottom turbo is faster than a B at the same settings (for example min setting), just only me or thats common. Its a great joy i love
it but whene i play a games like double dragon and i wanna jump (You can do that whene press a+b at the same time) but i cant do that because the nes detect the faster action first. I take it a part and clean it and replace a capacitor but it didnt salve the problem. How can i fix that? Any idea? Thx!
I fucking Love that Sexy Beast of a Controller. The Turbo Speed controls are Perfect for calculating the proper speed at which the bullets leave the screen in Contra. Too fast and there will be a pause in between every 3 shots. Too slow and you wont kill the enemies fast enough. Just right, and you can sit back and enjoy your Badass NES Advantage.
I just got an NES advantage today for $10.00 it was definitely worth it!!!
a seriously great controller to awesome.
Never got the chance to use this remote. However, I did own the SNES Advantage remote.
easily my favorite
but do u got the nes freedom stick i got one and its cool 2
nice i have 2 of these..one is turning yellow and the other is still nice. i use it for millipede and zanac :P
its awesome too!!
Now that the Statue of Liberty Head is now open, I so wan't take one up there in Ghostbusters gear, lol!
@labovski i think there may be an adapter to turn an nes input to p2p.
If ur A or B buttons are not working properly u can take the Advantage apart with a screwdriver and clean the rubber contacts. Most of the time they simply just wear out and can be fixed easily with a little glue. U will find the screws holding the Advantage together under the rubber feet.
Dude, I want this.
Hey Mark, when will you review the NES MAX controller?
Cool I have to get one....
I wish controllers like this were on every console and PC.
i picked this up at game exchange yesterday cuz i only had $6 so i was ehh.....then i saw the nes advantage and i was like jackpot!! only $4.95! so i snagged it brought it home cleaned it up a little and it works perfectly the best arcade stick i have ever played with :) also i play it with mike tyso punch out and contra the most :)
were can you find this nes advantenge
i saw this in a store i went to!!!!!!!!!!!!! i am sad now that i didn't get it!!! it would have been amazing!
Still have mine from '89, I replaced the LESs and changed the ball, some paint looks bad asshole and plays like a champ.
So cool, even the Ghostbusters used it =3
what is the turbo buttons do?
does it still work with the Statue of Liberty?
You could prank your friends. When they're playing, if they pause to go to the bathroom or something, unscrew the ball from the joystick so it's just sitting on top of it. When they go to play the ball will fall off and they will die on the game. Laughter ensues.
I had one of these things. For those of us with bear-sized paw-hands, this was a Godsend.
Never play Contra without this beast
I still have mine - and it still works! lol
where do they get all that music?
goona have it on my nes arcade :)
OLD SCHOOL GAMES FTW!
Why the Master System was a amazing console you should be proud!
i have one but the a button dont work as well now, but i beat double dragon with it, still best controller ever.
I always like the NES controller that had the two round small turbo buttons, i forgot what it was called...
Huh. I never responded to this? That's weird. This is a epic controller. It really is one of the best controllers ever. It was just so comfortable.
The thing was even great for playing Dragon Warrior IV (a rpg). I would just lay back, put the thing on my lap and just play the game for hours on end with no discomfort from holding the boxy original controller and the use of the turbo button even helped just for quickly inputting commands and what not.
actually,.. I picked up Zanac at a pawnshop today on my way home from a horse show,... seems to compliment the new controller quite nicely,... : )
Can this work for the gamecube?
Never had one. Always wanted one. Back in the day, I knew my parents weren't shelling out $45-50 for this. Looks like I missed out.
That turbo feature would be great for BLJing on the N64! Dammit!
@Blockization:
yes, if you use the turbo functions online, youre called a cheater.
but back in the day there were no online games, these joysticks only helped you out iin single player mode or or against one friend.
You can get PS2 controllers with turbo buttons. I had one, but it broke pretty easily. It started rumbling uncontrollably, which was somewhat inconvenient for playing Metal Gear.
lol proper 80's techno spacey music.
thsi controller is bezerk, but imagine taken it to your friends house to play, be a bit weird, coz its so big
Is it possible to use this joystick with a PC?
Im thinking about buy one
