  • At this years Peterborough Land Rover Show we caught up with Harry and his stealthy looking OM606 converted 90!

    2012 land Rover defender 90 in Santorini black.
    No bells or whistles (aircon, electric windows central locking etc) ex-farm truck with 35k miles.
    Full strip down, full internal/external cage, body kit, full respray, on 33 inch Cooper LTZ, LED lights all round, landy glass panoramic windows.
    Had its first puma engine failure at 55k miles (oil pump failure) second engine failure at 56k miles (injector misfire/cracked piston) 3rd engine OM606 3.0 straight 6 turbo diesel coupled to Land Rover 6 speed box using an Ollie North adapter plate.
    Using k2 engine mounts, stainless waterpipe and alternator relocation. Fuel pump is ecu controlled from a DSL1 controller running the Mercedes wiring loom. THIS HAS SINCE BEEN UPDATED TO A MECHANICAL 7.7mm PUMP FROM DIESELPUMPUK(DPUK).
    Smaller water pump pulley from DPUK and rear block cooling mod from K2, using puma rad and Alive ultimate intercooler with an electric fan cooling that.
    Custom exhaust manifold from PT Racing.
    Quick spool valve from DPUK feeding a Holset HX35 with a smaller 11cm housing.
    Engine had done 170,000 miles before conversion so cleaned up before swap and rocker cover painted using Buzzweld 2k on traffic red.
    For axle clearance, swapped on an e320cdi (om648) rear drop sump and oil pump.
    Exhaust pipe is 3 inch straight through to side exit behind passenger door with partial heat wrapping.
    Transfer box has been mounted on a discovery cross member to allow relocating back.
    All custom pipework for coolant and boost pipes
    Comfortable sports seats, removable Momo wheel, double din stereo conversion, leather dash tops and grab handle, Syncro Gearboxes short shift kit and leather cubby box.

    Sweet conversion! I was wondering do u need to change the internals of pump with the dsl to get more ponies? Can you run two maps say one low smoke and the other full beans at the touch of a button?

      Not sure, most people I know have swapped to a manual pump eventually

    Very nice build but this smoke looks bad. It gives diesels a bad name. I understand that if you want power you can't always get that without smoke. But i would almost be ashamed to put the throttle down if i had this car.
    By the way: i'm not an environment tree hugger. I drive diesel myself and also LandRover.

      The merc engines are notorious for pouring smoke out but some of the most powerful ones are set up for little at max power

    Hi guys! Freddy here from South Africa. A friend and I are looking at doing the same conversion. Also a big plus point for us that you can still run a mechanical pump. Would Harry perhaps be willing to do a detailed video on the conversion of his defender? I wanted to opt for the M57 conversion but not a fan of all those electronics. Would love to ask Harry some questions on his build! :) Thanks for the great vids! Keep'em coming!

    Im a big fan of land rover but if didind burn the gear box with a stage 2 ecu map on the puma and still not burn with the om606 something wrong mate lol

    ‘‘Tis a good engine the 606, me and a friend had a psychopathic 606 1980 G wagen, but I would personally put the 4.0 Cummins (paccar in the UK) engine in one it’s just the 6bt with 2 lopped off and makes the same power

      It is obviously a way lighter engine which is why I would use it even td5 defenders can be nose weight with out 800kgs of Cummins in it

      All those Cummins derived engines seem heavy tho?! Not sure of weight of a 606 but doubt its as heavy as those..🤔

      OM606 = 210 kg (463 lb) dry weight
      4bt = 499 kg (1,100 lb ) dry weight
      OM606 clear winner in the weight department and much more appropriate for a 90, the OM606 doesn't have very good numbers in stock form but the can be tuned up pretty easy. The 4bt is a work horse but they are very noisy, heavy and would shake a defender to pieces, plus they are a pretty tall motor so not an easy swap.

    The M57 might have been a better engine by its low end torque characteristics but the OM606 appeals to me just fine.

      I think the OM606 is the best swap for the money at the moment but could be wrong!

      @@Club86 How are you getting on with the auto? I changed to auto, but didn't like it so went back to R380. Interested in your electronic set up too, I went down the 7.5mm mechanical pump with DPUK hybrid turbo- can't fault the power/ performance, bit smokey but only when pushed.

    Hahaha It doesn’t make 300 plus hp on standard pump, that’s why the gearbox is surviving. Put on rolling road for power run it only cost £50 for power run

      There’s plenty of 606’s with 300 or just over hp on stock pump, don’t get me wrong the egt’s start to get high but it’s not impossible

      thats only on full loaded throttle. like a lot of the remaps, doesnt smoke at all when reved freely

    It's anything else than a classic Defender, it's sounds horrible, only a roar shouting. Similar to put a Porsche engine in a VW Käfer 50 years ago. Drivers drive style and accelerate does not suit to a Defender. Thanks God, my opinion does not matter.
