This concert seemed to be made during the 1970's. The concertmaster was Frank Gullino, former member of the New York Philharmonic from 1942 to 1979 (Assistant Concertmaster 1962-71, then Associate Concertmaster from 1971-79)

Genius like this is not here any longer....I never heard Rhapsody in Blue played with such significance before, and I have heard it a million times.

Lenny does such beautiful, graceful, expressive gestures when conducting. He could have been a mime or interpretive modern dancer. He had such an expressive face, too.

It's pretty funny that he uses a score for West Side Story, considering you can see him do Sacre du Printemps and many other scores without one.

Not to mention that he wrote the score for West Side Story!!

Thank you very much for posting this concert. I am very grateful to get to hear it. As the others have stated this is from 1976. It was the New York Philharmonic's bicentennial tour.

There are only two kind of people in the world friends, those who are happy to make us feel good and...those who feel so worthless if not breaking the balls, making of our lives a hell torture... therefore we need a lot of music and show them how they are total losers, hanging on with gorgeous performers that make of our lives a paradise on earth, very cute this happening, Maestro Bernstein still has a lot of good things to teach us all, have fun friends, spreading good vibes of a kind

It should be 1976 instead of 1987.

Does anybody know why they omitted the middle section of the prologue in the symphonic dances? The one with all of the percussion features and big climax with the police whistle.

"They"? You mean Leonard Bernstein, who is responsible for the cut. In the 1985 video with the Israel Philharmonic, LB opens the cut.

Bernstein was a great musician as in conductor and composer but not a great pianist. There are many duff notes in this performance and likewise for many of his other performances.

Bernstein''s primary job was conducting, piano and composing was secondary. With West Side Story, his legend continues to grow and should remain forever.

Lenny looks out of breath after the piano solo. If this were l987, he had only three years left to live. I don't like "Rhapsody in Blue." I don't find any real beauty in it.

      pianist!

If you don't like Rhapsody in Blue, maybe you're to serious. Just enjoy the rhythms and the tunes - the Love theme is definitely beautiful
