P.S. the Key to Stop Motion is the speed at which it is shown... if these scenes are slowed down just a tad they move with the weight and size that you would expect to see... I am greatly Disappointed in James Cameron in his Obsession with T2 and his Neglect of The Terminator which is the Superior film. T2 had the Budget and SPFX but The Terminator had the Originality and the Horror that was LOST in the Sequels... James Cameron needs to Release a Director's Cut of The Terminator and use modern technology to Remaster it the same way that George Lucas did with STAR WARS...
T2 was the most expensive movie ever made one hundred million dollars I was lucky to see it on the cinema incredible classic and Edward furlongs first movie

I never compare them to each other. The first has more Horror elements in it, the second is way more Action. like it was with Alien to Aliens. Funny that both Franchises went the same way. Both first ones are to of the best in their genre and both second ones are two of the best Action Movies ever made and both Franchises went downhill with the third one even if i think T3 is better then Alien 3. Sadly Terminator had a Franchises Killer with T6 while Alien, luckily, never went that far.

I actually prefer the sequel to the original, even though the OG is sublime.
I saw T2 in the theater when it first came out. It blew me away and to this day it's still the best sequel EVER made and one of the best movies in general ever made. T2 holds up very well❤❤❤

“It’s like being born maybe”- Reese on time travel. Umm, did momma Reese just pop a squat and let you drop on the floor?
In the book it explains that during one of the earlier shootouts that took place, one of Reeses shotgun blast destroyed the pump responsible for circulating blood to the flesh so throughout the film his skin turns pale and his wounds can't heal with no blood being pumped and so he starts to rot.

You'll love how much more is in the book, like in t1 during the motel self repair scene, due to money and tech there were a few more repairs that had to be cut from the film.

Arnold's line "I'll be back" was from this film. He only said it once in this movie but it became iconic overnight. Everyone was saying it. Before the internet, that line and this film became legendary. It immediately became his catchphrase and was worked into practically all of Arnold's films. I was 10 years old when this came out. I was blown away. Brilliant sci-fi, fierce action and a great story. Game changing film for visual effects at the time. brace yourselves for T2.
I love how they tie the picture together. Reese always wondered what she was thinking of in that moment. What she was thinking about was Reese. And he fell in love with her from the picture of her thinking about him and how she loved him.
That's some top tier tie together detail. An example of what a great movie this is for the details.
I don't care if I repeat myself but this film, which is focused on science fiction, is more romantic than all those which are supposed to be romantic (which for the most part are soft porn in disguise)

Also the actor who played bishop was given the role of the terminator, but they saw arnold and gave it to him.
The rifle used by Arnold at the police station is either an Armalite AR-18 (full auto) or AR-180 (semi-auto, but in this movie converted by the Terminator to full auto). This rifle was designed by Eugene Stoner to be easier to set up manufacturing for (using stamped components) in less developed countries, rather than the forged aluminum used in his more well-known design, the AR-15 / M-16). It never caught on much, though it was popular with the IRA, but its basic internal design has been used in several other rifles, such as the HK G36, HK416, FN F2000, FN-SCAR, Steyr AUG, CZ 805 BREN, Chinese QBZ-95, HOWA Type 89, SAR-88, T-91 and British SA80.

You guys need to watch 'Conan The Barbarian' 1982 (based off the comic books). It's Arnolds first major role and what helped him get future roles, including this one. Also, a young James Earl Jones like you've never seen him before as well as one of the greatest soundtracks of all time.

The moment with the photograph in the end is awesome because earlier in the film Reese says that John gave him the picture and he wasn't sure why at the time and then Reese said he wondered what she was thinking about in the moment that picture was taken. Turns out she was thinking about him.
Also the only time stop motion for the terminator is used is the wide angle shots where you see most of the Terminator but the other scenes where you see it from like the waste up it's a life size animatronic.
Didn’t catch the ‘Aliens’ reference when the said that the Terminator was a Cyberdyne Systems model 101. That’s the same company that produced the android Ash in Alien. When Ripley gets mad about Bishop being an android, Bishop asked Burke if Ash was an older model, and Burke said “Yeah, Cyberdyne Systems, model 120-A2”.

Yeah, I watched it again the next day and realized it was just very similar. Still, a lot of crossover items between the movies, like the ‘phase plasma pulse rifle’ that was mentioned in both movies.
The "Reese is the dad" thing is what's known as a "predestination paradox". Where something from the future does something in the past that's ultimately responsible for the very future it's from. Reese didn't know he'd be John Connors dad, but Connor did when he chose to send Kyle back in time. Major Trekkie nerd here😅
Speaking of....the greatest time travel movie is most likely Predestination. That fuckin' movie blew my mind and shook me to my core about every 20 minutes its a phenomenal movie.

Now, that I think of it, I was exposed to a good chunk of thriller and horror content during my teenage years, particularly the early ones. Could that be the reason why I find it difficult to enjoy light hearted stuff ? Because of overstimulation because of dark midia ?

I watched The Terminator in 2021 for the first time and fall in loved with it.
I felt the same when I watched it in a cinema in 1984.
I just like watching people react to this movie so they can see what the 80s were like. This movie is probably one of the few mainstream movies that actually does a good job of realistically portraying the age in my opinion.
The roommate’s boyfriend who puts up a good fight is Slider from Top Gun. “Slider, you stink.”

Terminator 3: Rise Of The Machines is the most underrated entry in the film series. I have never been able to figure out why it has such a bad reputation with so many fans. Actor Nick Stahl perfectly embodies John Connor as a young man jaded and worn down by years of being on the run for his life, and the film is a fun, fast-moving cinematic rollercoaster ride from start to finish. Ignore the naysayers, and watch it for yourselves.
Fun fact: The studio had to insure Arnolds eyebrows 😂

For me this is more of a horror movie than anything. The thought of a Terminator hunting you is just terrifying. It cannot be bribed, bargained with, reasoned with. It will never get bord, distracted or lose interest. While you are eating, it is looking for you. When you in the bathroom, it is looking for you. When you are sleeping, it is looking for you. Just terrifying.
Give you a little trivia about the gun shop scene: he asked for a "phased plasma in the 40-watt range" a futuristic weapon it was a tactic of the terminator to see how much of a threat the gun shop owner was when he said " hey just what you see pal" terminator then knew that there nothing that could take him out in the shop

So fascinating to me, that you guys never saw this movie, but I am 47 now and Gen X so this movie was just part of my childhood/growing up years. At the time this movies were so innovative and James Cameron and others made groundbreaking movie art that set the standards for the future. It was realy interesting to see you experience this masterpiece for the first time.
Reese did not know that he wpuld be the father of John, but John knew and maybe sets the spark by giving Sarahs picture to Kyle and choosing him to be the one who travels in time.
It sometimes gets missed, but Kyle will have Sarah's picture for years, wondering what she's thinking about. At the moment the picture was taken, Sarah was thinking about Kyle.
This is the movie that made a lot of people STOP listing their names in the phonebook.
Kyle Reese taught Sarah Connor everything he knew because John Connor learned everything from Sarah & in order for his timeline to exist he needs to make sure John is not only born but i equipped to handle the walking toasters!

In Scream 2 they are discussing movie sequels that are better than the original. That Linda Hamilton reference is for her look in Terminator 2.

The first Terminator was made with minimal resources... and I do mean minimal. People have no doubt told you about how certain parts of the movie were filmed hastily without permits. The very final shot of the movie was almost sabotaged by a state trooper.... Arnie literally walked up to a car and punched the window in one take. James Cameron was living off the dollar menu at McDonalds using coupons that would get him two burgers for one dollar. He'd eat one and save one for the following day.
The late, great, Stan Winston tells a marvelous story in the behind the scenes:

You know what's in this shot? Two pieces of foam core, a Christmas light, a piece of aluminum foil, and cigarette smoke. That's it. Some guy is off camera blowing cigarette smoke into the frame, while someone else is literally dialing a knob on a cable attached to the light bulb. The aluminum is the crushed half face of the Terminator, and the foam core are the two pieces of the "press." They were completely out of money when they filmed that shot... and it is the very last shot of the Terminator in the film.
And that is why I love this movie the most out of all of them. Pure artistry, pure film making, with love and passion. James Cameron had a food-poisoned inspired nightmare of a metal skeleton walking out of a fire, and in just a year and a half he had brought that vision to life.
Also, the reason around the “plot holes” about why not send a bomb or gun case wrapped in skin…Reese says that the Model 101 is brand new, and the resistance got the upper hand suddenly. Sky net had to send the best hardware it had on hand at the time, with the most data it had about Sarah, and go bc it was about to loose. The humans seem on the defense the whole movie, but the reality is that the whole movie is a Hail Mary by skynet to win
I have a suggestion for a film for you to react to: TREMORS (1990), a great classic of killer monster films, it has a different plot and great characters, it even gained a fun and insane franchise, it's worth checking out.

I like that the tanker truck damaged, and slowed down, the terminator, and at the same time the damage done to the tanker truck, by the terminator, slowed the tanker truck to near human running speed. Super Awesome Reaction!
Hey Raggedy, a Fun Fact for you Arnold was originally cast to play Reese & Lance Hendrickson was cast as the Terminator. But when Cameron met Arnold he changed his mind & cast him as the cyborg & had Lance play the police detective & Michael was cast as Kyle Reese.
3 main characters from Aliens are in this….that WAS Bishop, the main male was the dude that taught Ripley how to shoot and the very first group of three guys had “put her in charge!” Dude killed by arnold

Sweeeet as my mates. I've been super busy with the real world and now I have an Alien Covenant, Nun, 3 Robocop movies and the icing on top this beauty. The Terminator. A cornerstone of science fiction cinema. I remember sneaking into cinemas when I was 7 to see this bad boy. And I went back about 5 times. Absolutely loved it. I would have gone more but cash and opportunities to get away unsupervised by your parents at 8 were pretty thin on the ground. Actually, it was the cash that was really hard to get. Adult supervision wasn't as big of a deal back in the early 80's 🎉 as it is now. Gimme a like if you survived as an 80's kid. 👍
Time travel is an old idea... and was used in science fiction for ages. H.G Wells wrote The Time Machine back in 1895. This movie is a masterpiece of the genre, though. You'll love T2... it is pretty much the perfect sequel.
40 years... whoa. That's just me feeling my age. I am grasping that for newcomers watching this movie now, the experience is comparable to what it would have been like for me in 1984 watching Buster Crabbe play Buck Rogers or Flash Gordon in black & white...
The rifle used by the Terminator in the police station shootout was the Armalite Rifle 18 or AR-18. it differs from the famous AR-15 in that it was made from stamped parts rather than milled. It was never adopted as a military service rifle in the US but went on albeit in bullpup form as the standard British Army rifle SA80/L85. AR-18's were smuggled into Ireland by PIRA and became something of an icon in Irish nationalist area's of the North. British soldiers who operated in the very same place against the PIRA did so with the SA80. The PIRA had the better weapon as the SA80 was plagued with all kinds of flaws, reliability and quality control problems that were only fixed decades later when Heckler & Koch worked their magic on the design.
I loved the SA80. We were best friends, lol.

I loved it too but only because as a child walking to school during the conflict there was reasonable odds of me finding an accidently ejected magazine from the SA80 filled with rounds and I did in fact find one. Mother made me hand it in to the police but apparently just walking with the gun could result in webbing or whatever else snagging on the ejection mechanism resulting in soldiers wandering around the most dangerous place in western Europe with no bullets in their guns!

i'm a 47 year old nerd in the UK sat animating on my own project and this is so much fun to watch and listen to - watching you guys rock out to all the 80s synth stuff in there too hehe... its pretty much all i listen to on the newretrowave channel - toonnnnnns of stuff on there! The cop shop takedown is just awesome as well... so violent!
its really great to see younger generation dive into these older films - Terminator 1 and 2 are pretty much the mic drop of sci fi action films.. up there with Aliens and Predator and the original Robocop.
To add to this regarding the vfx - yeah with the 80s being what they were CGI fx were very thin on the ground really - Pixar were just starting to experiment with short films like Knick Knack and Tin Toy... (give or take a few years!) ...but I'd say the T-rex scene in the first Jurassic park is literally the point where CGI tears out of its fence and roars out to the world "I'm here!".
In T2 they did some incredible visual fx all round... its still incredible today - the scene with the T1000 walking through the metal bars still blows my mind... its setup soooooo well and the moment where his gun catches on the bars is amazing and completely sells the visual effect!
with this first Terminator film i find that image of the T800 walking down the corridor with the limp far more terrifying in stop-motion than any of the other shots i've seen in the other films with full CGI - i think if they could somehow get that "grittyness" into the motion it might work.. almost like they need to go backward instead of just doing CGI all the things
btw i work in animation for feature film and tv myself ..good fun.. rewarding when you get on a great show :)

What's funny is that with the sudden advancement of A.I. in real life, it was discovered that A.I. learned to lie in a matter of minutes to achieve a goal that was set for it by certain programmers. There have also been incidents where even NASA and Google had to shut down their A.I. because they were exhibiting strange, unusual, and unexpected behaviours. Maybe A.I. shouldn't be messed with for a while until we can make sure that it won't suddenly become "self-aware" and decide that we, humans, are a problem that needs to be corrected or deleted as a solution.
The blue tint is probably day for night, of which T2 makes extensive use too. It was shot on film with minimal lighting, hence the heavy film grain. The reason for that is it was gorilla-filmed in LA without permits, which is crazy when you think of all the gun fire and explosions !

In answer to your question when movies started involving time travel, it was the 1960s, the film version of HG Wells The Time Machine and of course the legendary Doctor Who.
The second film used fabulous newly created CGI for this film. It works :)
The name of the song is: Burning In The Third Degree. No revolvers have safeties.
Something you have to remember, when you see the scenes with prosthetic Arnold, or prosthetic Ash in Alien, is that when we saw these movies back in the days, it wasn't in super-duper-digitally 8K remastered edition. It was crappy analog copies, even in movie-theaters, that got gradually worse every time they were played. That meant that some of these effects were hidden or obscured by the bad image-quality.

If you 3 are gamers you should check out the old video game "Terminator Dawn Of Fate". It's very faithful to The Terminator.
"Why is his flesh rotting ?". According to the original story for the movie, the Terminator had a miniature heart and digestive organs to supply his flesh with blood. When Reese shot him in the chest in Tech Noir his heart was destroyed and from then on he was effectively a rotting corpse.
as i'm sure people have pointed out, a lot of these shots were filmed on a budget so small they used to go out into the streets, get the shots then flee before the police came. i dont dare think what would have happened if they'd been caught with a (presumably fake) sawn-off shotgun. it would be clear they were making a movie, BUT all it takes is one pissed off cop

If you want to see a great "time travel" movie, you guys HAVE to find "The Final Countdown" starring Kirk Douglas and Martin Sheen. Your head will explode with the paradox of time travel.
It came out around 1979-80. Graphics are dated, but it's a great storyline.
The Final Countdown was fun, and there's also The Philadelphia Experiment which actually came out the same year as The Terminator.

99% of revolvers don't have safeties.
They don't need them.
A double action revolver requires ~10-12 lbs of force applied continuously over a half inch of travel to fire without cocking, or you have to manually cock them, which means they can only go off accidentally (2-4 lbs of force with short crisp break) AFTER deliberately preparing the trigger and indexing the cylinder first.
Single action revolvers are even safer as they can only go off after manually cocking them and pressing the trigger. Some traditional single actions could go off if dropped because the pin was hammer mounted, if it rested on a loaded chamber, so many people only loaded 5 chambers, but modern single actions have a "transfer bar" which makes the hammer unable to impart pressure on the primers unless the hammer is cocked fully and then released.
A few though, like semi-auto revolvers (very rare, no ine makes them now) had safeties.
But some revolvers like Taurus and S&W make frame or hammer mounted locks so they're incapable of being cocked until unlocked.
I watched this movie when I was around 12-13 one night when dad was at work.. next day I rented T2 , I wasn't disappointed.

This movie was low budget. Cameron's first feature (if you don't count Piranha II). If you see what he was able to bring to the screen with that limited amount of money... And still resonating with audiences to this day. Creative genius !
The close ups of the skeleton were smooth motion bc it was s full size puppet for those scenes. Just the full size walking or dynamic fighting was stop motion. They edited them together nicely.
Cameron likes his rear projection over green screen (blue screen at the time this was made).
Those L.A. battle scenes used it a lot.
Same with Aliens, esp the drop-ship crashing scene with the actors running away from the approaching ship.
See, I'm so glad you said you watched all three, kudos to you. I know it's unfair to follow up TWO lightning in a bottle flicks, in the hands of a master craftsman at that, but the third one does have it's moments. Just like when you went through all the Alien iterations, great attitude... instantly subscribes.
p.s. for someone who feels the 80's was just a coupla years ago, it was quite surreal listening to you talk about how thing 'slam' and 'kick' and i forget what else because you were just so envious sounding, lol.
p.p.s. when I first heard that music at the beginning, it was breathtaking... I mean, it was pipes hitting pipes, but wow.
p.p.p.s. TIME magazine of all mags even came out with an essay comparing Reese to the angel Gabriel, who came back to help Mary/Sarah and her child (initials J.C.) would be the saviour of mankind(!).
My favourite part, and a sad fact, is when Kyle said that he always wondered what Sarah was thinking at that moment in the picture. And she was thinking in Kyle during that tape record. Lovers across time....
Almost in the first scene with the three guys, the blue haired is Bill Paxton, a very well known actor who appeared in Titanic, Aliens or Twister, among another ones.
I think the fact that Reese said he always wondered what she was thinking in the photo and it turned out she was thinking of him.
Bear in mind that the special effects aren't merely old, but it's also a low budget movie.
Green traffic lights have some blue for people who are color blind.

Michael Biehn (Kyle Reese) and Bill Paxton (one of the punks) were also in the Aliens movie besides Lance Henriksen (the Bishop guy) btw. I really liked Lance Henriksen in Hard Target movie with Jean Claude Van Damme. One of the best JCVD movies besides Bloodsport directed by John Woo.

another possibility is that John Connor was 2 separate people. half brothers from different timelines. the 1st one with an unknown father whom Sara now never meets. the second with Reese as his father

I like the interrogation scene with Dr. Silberman and Reese. "Why didn't you bring any ray guns?" I got another time travel movie you guys might want to react to it's one of my favorites, The Final Countdown (1980) The U.S.S. Nimitz goes back to December 6th, 1941. It's filmed on the Nimitz. It's like Top Gun meets Back to the Future.

The short film A Trip To The Moon came out in 1902 and was followed by A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court in 1921 and Slaughterhouse-Five in 1972. In the 1980s and 1990s time travel movies became more mainstream.

Kyle Reese was played by Michael Biehn ..he also played Corporal Hicks in Aliens.
Another James Camron classic, In the novelization it explains that the terminator ended up modifying all of his firearms before he started hunting Sarah Connor so that’s why they seem to all be automatic and have more firepower.

No one mentions how it's funny a robot with perfect aim needs a laser sight. I know they used it cause it looked cool for the audience.
Reese didn't know he was John's dad.
And you will see a lot of the same actors in the Predator, Terminators and Alien franchises.
Also Arnold was just starting out his acting career so we had no expectations of him being a good guy or bad guy when this came out. He was only really known bodybuilding and not everyone knew him

This movie filmed with shoe strings, anemic budget & clandestine night chases is friggin 40 yo. Thank you Stan Winston for the nightmares because the T 800 is still to this day the scariest mfer I wouldn't want to meet in a staircase at night. 😱
James Cameron intentionally took the template from Halloween for the Terminator, so this movie is definitely a sci-fi slasher. 😎🤖
