    • @bbsnarky7098
      @bbsnarky7098 Před 8 lety +22

      +CatoMinor EXACTLY.
nothing infuriates me more than when I hear people compare Duran Duran to shitty bands like 'depeche mode', 'culture club', 'spandau ballet', and today's 'one direction'.
Duran Duran are one of the most underrated rock bands in history. They helped influence and shape the music industry into what it is today:
      - Credited as being the biggest pioneers for the 'music video' as a serious medium for musicians to pursue.
      - The 'Fab Five' had an 80's 'Beatlesque' arrival in America - 2nd in world wide popularity only to Michael Jackson.
      - Pioneered the 2nd 'British Invasion' (which wouldn't have amounted to much without Duran Duran).
      - Only music act to hit #1 on Billboards hot 100 with a James Bond theme.
      - First music act to sell a song on-line (Electric Barbarella), going against the stream of the anti-napster lawsuits.
      - Formed in 1978, and haven't stopped making music since, despite all the so-called 'reunions'.
      - Nick Rhodes is often credited as being the world's first 'Metrosexual'.

I agree with you but...Depeche Mode are not a shitty band! They had an interesting evolution too (Violator is an excellent album, for example, their top). And Spands and Culture Club were commercial bands but not at all shitty bands. They are not comparable to all these MTV starlettes like Rihanna, Miley Cyrus, rappers, hiphoppers covered with rings and medallions. This is the real big shit.
And about DD: their first two albums, the most influenced by the new-wave, DD and Rio, are absolute masterpieces and i am never tired to hear them !!! I also like Japan, John Foxx, Ultravox and Gary Numan and Human League (from Reproduction to Dare), not to mention Joy Division, Cure, Teardrop Explodes, Echo and the Bunnymen and many others. The music of those years will be never coming back.

Ok...it's a question of personal tastes, but consider that Duran Duran could never have existed without Japan (listen to Quiet life) and Roxy Music (listen to Country life), their main models (and the electronic Bowie, of course).

Ah good memories! I grew up in the Far East. Luckly my friend's sister had a casette of their debut album(1981). When I played it, it was 'PLANET EARTH'. And that was one of those rare times in my life when I was blown away! Sometimes I amuse myself by imagining what if it was 'Nightboat' or 'Tel Aviv', not Planet Earth (remember cassette tapes?). Don't get me wrong, I love every single track on their debut album, tastefully dark and even experimental and progressive. I am just thinking about first impression,
Then, I knew nothing about them (except an image of them on the cover of the tape). Of course I DID think they were 3 Taylor brothers or cousins plus two friends including a french guy. The small image on the debut album jacket showed 5 stylish, well groomed young men but hard to make out which three were the Taylor brothers. No access to MTV, magazines, not to mention internet, without knowing their reputation as a pretty boy band in England, I just loved them as five young, pretty good, excellent song-writing MUSICIANS. I am glad it happened that way. Along with UK and Camel, DD has been my absolute favorites since 1984!

I started taking guitar lessons at 8/9 and I remember think that the first song (friends of mine) had the coolest sound and it was very dark.
      I was hooked.
I went to Bass guitar a year later and I have been playing bass ever since. Thanks DD for inspiring a life long musical journey.

So great that they start the show with Friends of Mine, one of my absolute faves. That ending from the line "what you doing friends of mine" .. wow. The first album is so good. I played it every day for months. And damn they look good.

This was I was here. I was 13 and my first gig! It was a free gig and they gave tickets away in the local paper The Promotor. It was incredibly loud. Quite a few hardcore New Romantics came down from London. It blew me away. Of course I brought Rio when it came out but the early stuff had a real edge to it that you can see in this live performance. It’s really lovely to have a momento of your 1st ever gig

Cracking memory!!! I was there with my school - Utterly Wicked night 💃. Great big smile on my face watching this while chair dancing 💃 The energy, the lyrics, melodies, harmonies, love it all and always have 🥰🥰🥰. Can’t believe how surprised I am that Simon sings in perfect tune! But he does ✊. Used to enjoy his dancing.........JT still the most gorgeous. I am and always will be an unashamed New Romantic an early 80’s child. I wonder how much more intellectual I would have been without all those lyrics in my head 😆

So many of these great songs are left out of current sets by DD ... 2016 and they still leave them out. Sad ... such great tunes! I heard that My Own Way is amongst their most hated song ... never played after Rio album tours.
