Adding VAMPIRE CRABS to my tank || Paludarium Update

- In this video, I add a group of Vampire Crabs to my paludarium. They are an extremely elusive and mysterious species of invertebrate. There isn't much information about them online, and I hope to shed some light on this underrated species. I hope to breed them in order to reduce the sale of wild caught individuals.

"This crab has more determination than I do for anything I've done in my life." idk man looking at this tank alone, I have my DOUBTS
heckin' amazing man
Hahah thank you!
Omg talking with you guys
Bro no wonder your crabs succeeded, look at that tank! A true habitat, you made a great & realistic environment for them to feel at home
What a fantastic tank. Those vampires must have thought they had landed in crab heaven. No wonder they were happy to start a family!
Agreed they were right at home ❤️🙌🏽
I really like this video because most other vampire crab set ups you see on CZcams are just an aquarium with some mossy rocks poking out of the water or just a tank of substrate with one water dish. This is probably why your crabs are so successful as you provided a deep enough substrate and a filtered water area.
Thank you!
There's enough vampire crab owners on earth that enough of them are also YT poster's that theres enough videos of vampire crab setups on YT for you to say "most other" setups like they're as common as cat & dog owners in ur experience or something? Thats a horrifying implication as someone who stumbled onto this video bc of it's colorful thumbnail. Thank you but I'm cool off that.

I had an absolutely horrific experience with FedEx as well. My girlfriend and I were looking for a leopard gecko to take care of, and we found this beautiful morph we fell in love with. Delivery day came around and we were SO excited to meet our new child. We got a message that he was going to arrive at 9 am. We checked for hours - 9, 10, 11, 12, no package. It finally delivered at FIVE PM. We took in the package, and when I opened it, it felt unusually hot inside. We live in the desert, so it gets very hot out here, I didn't think too much into it. I was confused about a bag of hot liquid sitting in the box when I realized it was supposed to be an ice pack. I took out the gecko container - it was completely steamed up. I opened it and our new baby was upside down, fried. We were devastated. We called the breeder, he reached out to FedEx, and their excuse was "we were delayed because of Covid." We found out he had sat in their truck for HOURS. We were given no real apology, a stupid explanation, and they did absolutely nothing about it!! They were in charge of delivering a LIVE ANIMAL, and they leave it in a hot truck in the desert for hours!?! I start fuming thinking of FedEx, especially with how they handle their animals. Absolutely disgraceful
How can they do such a thing, I was so shocked while I was reading this, I'm so sorry for you and your girlfriend. But if I can ask, where do you bought the gecko?
When it said “2 months later” I thought it would still be the crab playing tug o war with you and syringe 😂
Same 😂😂😂
I’ve never seen such a tank,absolutely fantastic.
I appreciate your effort to make ecosystems and inform us more on species that are misunderstood. Im inspired seeing your setup and how well everything is thriving. It's always refreshing to see something new in this hobby and executed gracefully. Im excited to be updated more on your observations and research in your beautiful paludarium!
It makes me feel good knowing I’m helping other people. I appreciate the support!
@@TheDrPlants how much does this hobby cost
That chilled out crab kicking back with a bargain bucket was freaky, only thing missing was a soda and of course the remote control!
Yes!
Hahahah yeah, I thought it was more like he was vigorously eating a bucket of popcorn
Mmm, popcorn 🍿
This was such a good balance of accurate and thorough information, without being too bogged down. And entertaining without sacrificing the educational parts. Thanks for the content, I am subscribed for more. :D
I love this! Not only have you created an amazing environment for your plants and creatures to survive in, but you're also documenting such a rare occurrence. You sir are amazing
Humanity prospers because of people like you. Being so into such a unique niche thing is wonderful.
That set up is unreal. I swear it's like being in the corner at the aquarium of the city zoo. Very informative too. It's like David Attenborough had a protégé.👍
I love how you try new things but make it seem so effortless; and if there's an issue you swiftly seem to recover! Such as, young animals being preyed upon, cannibalism, etc. Plants damaged, whatever; you make it seem so chill!
This is so interesting! Beautifully filmed and super educational. Thanks!
Thank you!!
I'm not going to lie that tank looks amazing. I would love to have a bigger tank like that
I love the tank size because it’s big but it takes up very little space. It’s very tall yet narrow. The dimensions are 18x18x36 inches.
@@TheDrPlants do you know the species name of this type of crab?

@@DeathIsOhSoBitter thank you 💕
as someone in aquaculture and not much someone into crabs I find you being able to breed them in captivity a really good venture for you. Especially if you cant find anything about it.
They are incredibly cute!!! I love seeing them thriving and happy!
Dude your setup is beyond amazing. Look at how much your little guys are thriving because of you!! Love this so much 🦀 💜👍🏽
Congrats! I bred several generations of vampire crabs (orange carapace) in 30x30cm cube vivarium in an office, so they seems to breed easily like many of the geosesarma species. I think having a lot of springtails is key to reduce cannibalism.
Springtails and other microfauna are definitely great in reducing cannibalism
Is it viable to house vampire crabs in a 30x30x30cm cube? I have one laying around at home and would love to keep some vampire crabs in it but I though it was too small
I personally think its too small but maybe you could find a smaller species of crabs
The tank is absolutely stunning wow!
This is amazing! I’ve kept them 15 years ago, and severly lacked in my husbundary. I vouched to never get them again unless they are being bred in captivity. To see you have such succes with them warms my heart! Well done sir. You have a new subscriber!
Haha thanks!
That was super cool to see! You definitely enjoy what you do, your tank is absolutely beautiful. It’s no surprise to see the crabs breeding. Thank you for sharing ♥️
These videos are so exciting and inspiring. Your passion is infectious! I will probably never make one of these but I am interested in your journey. Please keep updating us!
I'm very inspired by this video. I never thought of owning a Paludarium before but the amount of animals you can put in one seems so much fun. I might have to build one someday :) Thank you so much for this video. Can't wait to watch your other ones!
Really happy to hear that!
This is one of the coolest set ups I've seen. I love seeing the progress and how much has changed with each update!
That was amazing the whole experience! Thank you for sharing that with us all and great work building your own ecosystem! That takes a lot of hard work and dedication
They're so cute! You have such a beautiful home for them.
I just had to subscribe! Your setup is out of this world! And you actually care so much for each and every single one of your specimens, I'm just so grateful I've found you in a sea of cold hearted "experts"
Thank you!! I appreciate it!
Such a sweet dedication this video reveals; the work, the beauty, the camera work. Just gorgeous.
Can’t believe your documenting these crabs that we know so little about, crazy!!!
Amazing, Great paludarium. I loved to see you building and develop this little wildlive further.
such a beautiful tank. I can tell you put your heart and soul into it
Thats so cool! I cannot imagine the tedious work that goes into this but im sure its extremely self rewarding! Looks amazing and calming.
WOW! SO COOL!
Thank you for sharing all your information and beautiful tank. I can hear your passion for all of this. Beautiful tank, and you're obviously a great human 👍 😀

It’s like a mini Amazon Rainforest in a tank. This video was a lot more exciting than I expected. Great job 👍
This is the best video I’ve seen all year. Can’t wait to see your growth and the tanks as well.
That’s a beautiful setup for the crabs. Really well done. Look forward to more vids.
Such a cool video and I learned a lot. Very beautiful tank and flora--very exotic. All the animals are so adorable and interesting. Thanks for posting!
Your narration is probably the best I heard. Honestly I only clicked to see the carbs for myself but after hearing you talk about them I stayed for the whole video.
I appreciate that!
So beautiful. This is the first time I've ever seen a vampire crap so amazingly set
Completely found this channel by accident in my midnight CZcams adventures, im so glad i did, love your dedication and energy towards your passion and you genuinely make the video interesting while teaching me some cool things i never new! How cool! Your tank is gorgeous and your dedication really shows.
Tons of videos and articles online of them breeding in captivity but im glad you enjoy it
Wow!! I don’t know any other way to express how amazing your tank is. I am a nature show junkie of all types. Would love to replicate this tank. The flora is just as colorful as the inhabitants. Thank you for sharing!! Best wishes to your new babies and keeping them from becoming hor d’oeuvres.

I've never seen a tank like that in someone's house. Its beautiful. This is a great video. Thanks.
I clicked on this video due to the stunning plants and my nostalgia for a frog tank I had 25+ years ago, and I am amazed. That has to be the healthiest tank I've ever seen. Keep up the great work, and I look forward to watching your videos.
Thank you!
Respect. Daffy duck crab style
This is an unbelievably amazing set up, you definitely know your stuff!
These crabs are amazing! Love the colors and they are just too awesome! Thanks for sharing!
That’s quite valuable information for the scientific community. I’m sure quite a few biologists would be interested in your crabs!
I am impressed by the gorgeous paludarium you created. You are more than a biologist. You are an artist!
Thank you!
Beautiful tank. Joy to watch❤️plants looks lovely. Amaizing job👏
AWESOME setup! These creatures are clearly thriving under your care. It all looks amazing. Also, thank you for sharing the ugly truth about wild captures and supporting captive breeding.
Amazing collection and really hard work and a lot of research, hats off for your information, sir
This was very interesting! The crabs are beautiful thank you for this video
How amazing to see baby crabs! You created the perfect environment for them to reproduce. I would be so proud! 🦀💜
I can’t wait to see more of these crabs. Thank you for sharing.

hey man, what you've done is beautiful and you should keep going
absolutely next level tank setup. this is sooo freakin cool !!
Your channel is so relaxing and I enjoy just vibing and mellowing out, seeing a tiny jungle/forest in your glass :)
You are a very dedicated caretaker! Beautiful home you made for them. Congrats on everything going well. Super cool video🥰
This is really awesome, I’ve never seen a tank so well done
CZcams just recommended this video I'm so glad it did never heard of vampire crabs you're set up is the best I've ever seen can't wait to binge watch more of your video's
Just a beautiful tank, honestly one of the best! Thanks
Just found your channel and love it. The set up must be right for the crabs to breed, hopefully a future video will go into this more as captive breading is the way forward imo. Just going through the videos atm , did you have any concerns regarding the crabs and other animals, may be this is addressed later. Thanks for sharing your experiences so far
The fact that the crab held on to the syringe for 2 while months is genuinely amazing 😳
This video was awesome to watch! I thoroughly enjoyed it. Thank you for sharing!
all your video's on the paludarium are amazing to watch.
Also very relaxing.
Damn makes me want to get a tank like that myself.
Never thought about having crabs in a vivarium, but those critters are simultaniously cute and metal \m/
But then again this probably requires alot of research and daily care so they don't suffer in my glassbox .....yea yt videos will do for now.
very responsible of you, have well deserved like
It's nice seeing a smart person every once in a while, one of my friends think it's easy peasy and all you need is a 10 pound tank or smt 💀
Yeah I'd love to hear more about how much daily work this kind of thing takes. How many hours a day does he have to invest to keep the tank healthy, not counting his other projects he sends time on.
Hello, I was trying to breed these guys, specifically Geosesarma tiomanicum, Disco Vampire Crab, and I was able to make babies! Unfortunately, my breeding chamber was not able enough to keep them alive because I just didn't trust my crabs enough to not eat them. I have photos of them and I can share them if you like!
Also, if you do plan on separating them, I highly suggest to keep them in an enclosure where you can easily monitor them as well as provide lots of live moss, I am pretty sure at this point that these two reasons are why I wasn't able to keep the babies alive.
Hello! I do not plan on separating the baby crabs despite predation. They are hunted by both the crabs and geckos. The crabs are breeding so readily that there are so many babies. Many of them are growing large despite the predators. I don’t feed them either. I believe the reason why they are doing so well are from the following reasons; a large enclosure, tons of microfauna, lots of leaf liter, heavy planting, and endless hiding places.
I just discovered your channel and it is fantastic, I believe that I will learn a lot here and I am looking forward to that and everything else you do on your channel. Thanks.
I really like your video! Very entertaining/informative and straight to the point!
That's awesome to know all this stuff about them. And those little baby crabs are so freaking cute. Lol.
Subscribed!! Amazing tank, awesome vid. Looking forward to seeing more!!
Glad you enjoyed!!!
I watch it over and over again
I really like the videos about this project.
You inspired me to create something similar.
Dude this is so cool. Keep us updated with what you put next its super interesting
I never thought crabs would interest me this much, guess I was wrong. Thanks for the info and great informative video.
I’m planning a build similar to this as a tree frog habitat. It’s awesome you’ve created a thriving system. I’d like to end up with the same result, I can’t find a ton of info on it but I’m guessing I won’t be able to include with crabs in my set up with the frogs.
Thank you! And I do not think you can keep these crabs with frogs only because the frogs have very sensitive skin. On the other hand, you could probably keep lizards of similar size in that enclosure. Mourning geckos and anoles are always great but always make sure to do your research first. There isn’t much information about building full ecosystems online and I strive to change that!
The person i bought my crabs from has multiple setups with frogs and vampire crabs together with no issues, he even advertises that they do to great together. i have no personal experience with it myself tho. make sure too observe, and don't put them together in a very small enclosure.
Epic tank, love the setup! Can't wait to see more
I just love your videos !!!!!! Keep going, you're doing amazing job and we feel the passion !!!!
Really awesome progession on the tank! Looks awesome and the crabs really fit the aesthetic. Was that a mourning gecko at the end? Funnily enough my current tank build is also for mourning geckos :) they will really like it in your paludarium. Maybe you can become a vampire crab breeder now, if they do it consistently, to push against the practise of catching them in the wild. How long do they normally live?
Thanks and yes, that was a mourning gecko! Hope your build is going well! I have checked my local laws and I do not need a permit to sell vampire crabs which is exciting. They don’t live for long at all and they generally don’t live longer than 2 years.
@@TheDrPlants My build had some troubles at first, but I noticed the plants are starting to bounce back and the mold is not as common anymore. It's getting there! May I ask where you're located?
That’s awesome! And I live near philadelphia, pennsylvania.
