I saw a Kala Ubass at Chuck Levins. Picked it up as a joke to show my friends, but then I played it... Wow. Then, I called my wife. Then, I bought it. Still happy about all that five years later.
Secret weapon for the ubass - Galli nylon wound strings. They're nylon core, with a nylon round winding. Higher tension than the poly strings on most ubasses, and far more stable in terms of tuning, but still give a great upright type tone
For strings... check out the Aquila Thunderbrown U•BASS strings. They aren't as sticky as the nylon types... and have a great sound. I have a Kala Passenger with them... love them.
Definitely here for more of the tutorial and technique content... but i'll also (happily) watch some reviews. Recently found your channel and also recently started playing bass. Loving everything so far!
Wouldn't buy a fretted one but the fretless one I have I absolutely love. The rubber strings aren't bad... until you try non rubber ones, now I'm never going back.
Love the sound! Seems to be so practical. Thanks for the review man. Also thanks for being so generous, will definitely tap in the giveaway 😎 love the reviews!❤
Was travelling once to a nearby city and because I was travelling on a motorbike I needed a small (like really small) instrument. (Thankfully the venue had its own amps) When I showed up everybody was asking me "Where's your bass?" until I took the U-Bass out of its gigbag. We all laughed yeah BUT, in the end the people of that band were impressed of the amazing sound it had. It was a jazz-ish gig and the upright sound it had was perfect
A well done video!! I bought a Kala bass a few years ago and it is a GEM!! Travis demonstrates what big sound this little instrument has! Paul Simon's bass player uses one!
I was a bassplayer for a long time but the last decade I haven't played at all and I am starting to miss it! I could totally see myself picking up one of these! They sound great, don't take up much room and I wouldn't need to buy an amp! I'm here for it and so are my small hands 😂
I have the older version without the back plate and with the nylon/rubber strings. I use it when I am doing some old-time or bluegrass type stuff because it does have that big, upright sound or with a ukulele group. I also take it when I travel for business so i can practice without having to carry a big bag. The only issues I have is the lack of the back plate, so when I have to change the strings, it's a big pain, but not impossible and the end pin is also the jack for the amp and it works it's way loose. Luckily, someone showed me a neat trip about working on those, so it's not too bad. Nice review!
Excellent review. One question. I ASSUME you ordered a bass with round wounds, and you replaced them with flat wounds. Did you have to modify the nut or bridge or did the flats fit in the nut as is. Another utuber said he had to enlarge the nut since the flats where a larger diameter. Thanks !
Great video as always. I'll definitely have a U-bass someday, no matter the brand or pricetag, just for fun, practice and some acoustic moments that life requires haha.
I have a solid body 4 and 5, and they are power houses, kala's moto, more bass, less space. I use my pee wee basses at church, and I only have the volume and tone controls at 9 - 12 o'clock and it lays right in with the rest of the band with plenty available if needed 👍🏽
Great review bro. Really enjoy your content. Not a bass player (more Keys, drums and brass) but you make me feel like I could do it. Look forward to working with you someday. God bless.
I've wanted one of these for a while! I missed the chance to pick one up for a song on marketplace months back and I've been thinking about it ever since!
Yo Travis, I say why not develop more product review episodes. Especially if these are products that you are using and believe in. As for the give - a- way , had you not offered this option, I never would have discovered your website. So that's a win. I scrolled down the site and located the email box but is that the email link to the give-a-away? or did I add my email in the wrong drop down box? Also, I throughly enjoyed your Q&A with the wife and your buddy. Chock full of humor for sure. Anyway, thanx for all the tutorials and all the best with the calendar year of 2023. Stay Rowdy, Cheers
Love my u-bass with metal strings. Double love my baritone Kala electric. My Kala tenor 8 string is fun for a duet type sound. Thanks for the review - enjoyed it.
I love your playing content, but would gladly accept product content, especially if it includes playing the products. A lot of 'reviews' that people put out are nothing more than talking that is basically just reading the product description.
I gig my Kala more than any other of my basses. I have mine about 9? Years ago and it dont have that back access then. I just buy Harley Benton and it is maybe better than old Kala and cost only 165€.
This sounds grouse and looking for a small u bass as I'm getting my shoulder operated on n will be out of action for 4 months. But, this is over a grand here in Australia!

the "then I called my wife" part resonates lol

Do you have a link to where you bought them?
I bought mine because we were part of a ukulele group. And they wanted a bass player... this fit the bill perfectly.
What made that little bass sound so good was YOU playing it! Love your channel.

Small bass with BIG sound! I absolutely love the tone that they have plugged in! 😎🔥
Man my UBass fever had almost been cured and then along comes Travis!😂😂😂
Definitely here for more of the tutorial and technique content... but i'll also (happily) watch some reviews. Recently found your channel and also recently started playing bass. Loving everything so far!
Love you in the review format, mostly because of your excellent playing/demonstrations. Keep it up!
Wouldn't buy a fretted one but the fretless one I have I absolutely love. The rubber strings aren't bad... until you try non rubber ones, now I'm never going back.
Over a year later and this is still a wonderful video, thank you

Tone is like a nice warm hug 😂
I'm impressed with the sound! I can see taking that on vacation to play with friends or just practicing.

I would definitely love a review of some of the Donner basses

I'm in! This is on my list to buy next anyway. Great video!
That sounds so funky.. that’s awesome
Done! Awesome review! I appreciate these type of straight forward, honest reviews.
I have been wanting to try out the u bass. Would be great to use at church to play with a mostly acoustic set up.
Great video as always. I'll definitely have a U-bass someday, no matter the brand or pricetag, just for fun, practice and some acoustic moments that life requires haha.
I have the exact same striped black wood Kala and I love it!
Yes, big fan of this review type video. More!

Please review the HX Stomp for bass and show us how you’d use it.
Love these little things even with the crazy rubber strings
Love my u-bass with metal strings. Double love my baritone Kala electric. My Kala tenor 8 string is fun for a duet type sound.

Man I’d love to tickle that little fretboard 🔥those things sound crazy for the size
Yeah, keep doing it, man. You're killing it.

I would e q it differently than you did, but it sounds really cool. Great playing by you as well.
Is it loud enough to keep up withan accoustic guitar?
Entered and liked! Love your videos. You helped me get started with bass these past few months. Thanks for what you do sir.
Love it.
Awesome review on a pretty sweet bass, definitely sounds better than the Harley Benton that I used to have (had to sell it)
I liked this video very much. Thanks for sharing it.

Awesome video. Thank You for the review.
Did you add your own flats? If so what strings and did you need to adjust the bass for intonation, etc.? I notice they only sell with rubber or rounds
🔥🔥🔥
Pretty cool
Kinda curious as where to actually buy the strings
You should be able to buy them on their website!
Do they come with strap buttons if not can you order them with them?
This sounds grouse and looking for a small u bass as I'm getting my shoulder operated on n will be out of action for 4 months. But, this is over a grand here in Australia!

So… in the Hawaiian language all the vowels are pronounced as they are properly…
So “KALA” would be pronounced “Kay Lay”
This isn’t correct at all.
Nice
