  • We had a chance to review a 1962 Tatra 603. The Tatra 603 was an elite car reserved for high ranking officials of the communist planned economy. This particular Tatra 603 is suspected to be one of only twenty in the United States. In this video, we cover some Tatra history, as well as determine if the Tatra 603 is a good investment, or sale proof, meaning it cannot be sold..

    I was born in 1968 in Bulgaria. I've seen these cars during my childhood and it was fascinating because they were rare and intended for VIPs. Chech cars were always the best at those times and now, I think Skoda is better than Volkswagen even though it's owned and built by Volkswagen.

    There are a handful of these here in the UK. They are stunning and unique cars, although I think I'd go for one of the later models as they are a bit more compact!
    An excellent bit of history, and not well known; so thank you for including it in your review! Also worth having a look at is the Skoda prototype 932, from 1932! It doesn't take much imagination to see the Beetle gained some elements from Tatra, and a few from the Skoda prototype.
    From an American point of view, yes the engine is very small; but over here in Europe the average car had an engine of only around 1-litre, making the Tatra engine seem less small over here. The Tatra V8 is, to me, one of the most beautiful sounding engines of all time.
    Excellent review, I enjoyed watching - thank you :-)

    The most "sophistaceted" way to turn it on is of course the button right next to the side of the engine in its compartment (the intent was for the mechanic's convenience or so)

    I watched your show for the first time as you were featuring that incredibly interesting and "dreamy to own" Tatra 603. I was psyched to hear you mention that the car resided here, in my homeland, the Puget Sound region. That combined with the lovely overcast above you throughout the show made it quite obvious to me that you too are a "Seattlite" or "Puget Sounder". That said I have the beginnings of what I think is going to be a pretty darn Kool little collection of European cars going on myself. You know how Doug Dequirkio solicits So- Cal owners of interesting cars to reach out to him to potentially have their cars featured on his show. Well I might have offered to invite Douglas to review my cars if it wasn't for this. You know his episode from a couple of years ago where he features that silver Maserati Coupe GT off of a scumbag used car lot there in San Diego. Well I happened to be shopping for just that car or a Lotus Elise at that time. I ended up thinking that I could trust that "full of it" wingnut when he talked about what a great example it was for the price. Well anyways luckily my credit union made me get an appraisal on the car and low and behold the car wasn't at all what Demuro described it as being. Then that complete liar of a used car dealer "who'd of thunk it" had a verbal deal with me for the purchase of said car on a Friday. The plan is that the appraiser will arrive Saturday morning to do the appraisal which he does. Then pending an appraisal report that backs up, even for the vast majority part, that which DeMuro and the car dealer have sworn to about the car I would then be at my credit union on Monday to hand over the appraisal report and sign the loan papers, followed by a wire transfer to complete the deal. Well it turns out that the scumbag car dealer had another fish on the line. He got that guy to give him $1000 more on Sunday than what our agreed upon sales price was on Friday. The super shady part about it was that he knew that he was just using me to leverage more money from his real intended buyer and in the meantime he knew that the appraisal, which was for not, was costing me $500! Sorry for this turning into a bad memory ventathon. Anyways if you want to talk to me about reviewing one or more of my cars I'd be down. I have two nero over nero italian beauties, both are stock. They are a 1993 Alfa Romeo 155Q4 and her big sis' a 2004 Maserati Spyder. Then I also have in storage because it needs a fair bit of refurbishment a 1974 TVR 2500M. The TVR has it's numbers matching factory engine and transmission however the motor is seriously built. It is balanced with a hotter cam, 10.5 to 1 compression, lightened flywheel, oil cooler, header, a HiPerf distributor with relieved walls and bottom of casing allowing greater arc? "retardation of timing".Also she features after market auxiliary cooling fans and finally the kickers are the triple Weber 45 DCOE carbs which aren't just bought an attached using the kit inclusive intake manifold like most guys do. Nope; my intake manifold is ported to maximize the benefit of this barrel per cylinder setup! Sorry for being such a braggart. It's hard to be humble when you have Wayne Newton's body, according to my former San Quentin guard buddy's opinion Manson's face and a personality purportedly equivalent to that of an end table. I look forward to hearing from you.

    Most cars are evolutionary. Few are revolutionary. The design & technology offered in a particular car usually make this distinction. I would suggest identifying the revolutionary features and contrasting these with an ordinary car then pointing out and comparing the evolutionary features. Cars are the answer to the automotive questions asked and a T-603 and a DS21 answer a lot of questions. 'Locate' your car subject in history and show us why it is important. And get the description terminology right. Case in point: Tatra included an, 'engine crank handle' and featured, 'wing-vent' windows at the 'A-pillar' and the 'C-pillar'. Your viewers can use terms like; 'thing-a-ma-bob' but you're the expert and your terms and definitions should reflect your expertise. (BTW: I daily drive a '72 Citroen DS21)

      Hi Kevin, thank you for your feedback and thanks for watching the channel. I appreciate that you refer to me as an expert, but I'm far from it! That's why I ask viewers like you to comment!
      The challenge is determining what makes a car's feature evolutionary versus revolutionary. It can be argued that a blind spot monitor for example is both evolutionary (from side mirrors) and revolutionary (a sensor triggered light alerting the driver to another vehicle in the blind spot).
      Many features highlighted on the Tatra (and almost any car for that matter) are evolutionary and at some point, not even that unusual stand alone. What makes cars special however is the entire combination of features together. The stranger or more unique the mix, the more attention a car gets, good or bad.

    Nice looking car. I've heard of Tatra, but for some reason, Tatra cars were never sold here in the USA. The first time I'd heard of the Tatra was when Jay Leno featured one on his channel, *"Jay Leno's Garage".* He did a video on the Tatra T87. If you've never seen his videos, check them out. I don't know how good an investment this car would be, since they were never offered in the USA. But depending on the condition and availability of parts, I'd be willing to pay up to $50k, maybe more if they're even more rare in the Czech Republic.

    • @SaleProofCarReviews
      @SaleProofCarReviews  Před 3 lety +2

      I've been watching Jay Leno since I was a kid! I watched him with my dad in fact, who also loved cars and where my love for them stems from. $50K seems about right for the value of this Tatra. As far as I know, the owner is planning on keeping it because he said he hasn't gotten bored with it yet and he's owned it over 10 years.

      @@SaleProofCarReviews That's awesome! I'm glad someone owns it and loves driving it. I don't know *exactly* what this car would compete against had it been sold here in the USA. It looks too upscale to compete against Volkswagen, but I don't see it quite in Rolls-Royce territory either. I don't know what the American equivalent would be. What do you think?

    • @SaleProofCarReviews
      @SaleProofCarReviews  Před 3 lety +1

      @@jasoncarpp7742 That's tough to say because it doesn't really have a comparable American car in its class from the time period. The rear mounted air-cooled V8, mated to a column mounted transmission, in a curvaceous 4-door body was really a class of its own

    These are collectibles and they historically only appreciated in price. 603 from this video would go for about 25000€ - 30000€ here in Europe but there are some mint examples or restored pieces listed on various sites from from 45000€ up to 60000€ (for earlier and thus rarer production years).

    Did the remote start button work in the engine bay of this featurd car?
    If you have a cedar trunk at end of bed, does it become a beunk? Ir is a steamer trunk actually a stunk? I suppose if a car had trunk lids on both front and back, frunk might help someone understand where they will be going to find something.
    The under car spare tire saves ni more space than my VW or Mercedes. However, it could save a family on holiday from having to empty the trunk. But modern cars are relying on current configuration for crash worthiness. Speaking of rigidity, the minimalized spine provides such as this car is structurally similar to the T87.
    Spirited driving in a Tatra thru curves is best left to trained persons. A British automobile writer said, driving a Tatra rapidly in turns brings on an unexpected exhilaration like that of shampooing a lion. Fortunately, the 603 and later models have straps to "help" reduce axles from folding under. Just remember these straps were produced by the frugal Commies.

    I've only known about Tatras for maybe a few years but they're one of the weirdest, most quirky cars ever made, so therefore I love them! I guess we now know why the real early models of the Volkswagen Beetle had a split rear window as they were influenced by Tatra's rear styling. Did the car you reviewed have dual carburetors? I once read an article on a Tatra that did and wasn't sure if that was standard equipment or if it was only done on certain models. I imagine this car would have a rear weight bias, so I wonder if it would have stability issues when being driven in the wet much like the old Porsche 911 Turbos that would easily spin out under certain conditions. Could you find an old Saab 96 to review? I especially like the Saabs with the 3-cylinder 2-stroke engines because they're so weird! Thanks for the reviews!

      Hi Brian, anytime and thank you for watching! I'm not sure about how many carburetors are on this model, but yes it is very rear heavy.
