This was my first car. I bought it from my neighbor and restored it when i was 14 (in the 90s). The purpose of the cutouts on the doors was to give you arm a place to lay when driving. (which I always did) Another cool note is the "weather eye system" (or the heater under the dash) is a circle. This circle lines up with the cutout for the spare holder. In the factory, these were rotisseried with a pole going all the way through the car before the engine was fitted.

I don't have one, but I have a 1984 Volvo 240, with a factory installed VW 6 cylinder diesel engine.

Bizarrely, in an attempt to rewrite history, there are 2 different Mark III (1958 & 1969-71), 2 different Mark IV (1959 & 1972-76), and 2 different Mark V (1960 & 1977-79) cars.

66 was the best year.. Last to not be built on an assembly line and 1st to use the 440..

It's made by Chrysler but the Imperial was a stand-alone platform.. You don't call it a Ford Lincoln Continental..

Oops! Mea Culpa, Mea Culpa Dudes and Dudettes... Hudson merged with Nash, which Mitt (aka Pierre Delecto?) Romney's Daddy George pretty much rebadged most everything (except the Metropolitans) via AMC to Rambler, and proceeded to make some cars that were as Hideous out the factory doors as Sonny Boy Mitt's later behavior😅. Nash had a Venerable Flathead 6 as well, and it was used into the middle '60s in the American model line; the OHV AMC 232 and 258 and later derivatives were very Well Known for tough durability and found their way into International Harvester light trucks and Scout lines, and Jeep used their evolved version into the 90s before coming out with their V-6... Postal vehicles as well.

Great car, but overall presentation displayed narrative of overall ignorance of what were almost Universal features in American cars from the Thirties to the Fifties. Hudson's Essex Super 6 engine Was their Mainstay for years from ca. 1927 to the last of the Hornets, Wasps and Jets. Terra plane was what Essex became for awhile and the Essex/Terraplane line in Certain years gave Ford, Plymouth (yes #2 at times!) and Chevrolet some surprising sales statistics. Hudson's merger with Studebaker was 2 great Higher Quality, names, but late in getting into the high performance/RPM/short stroke V-8s, e.g. Chevy Small Block, Chrysler Hemi, and sigh, Ford's Deficiency Plagued Y-Block which was Remedied by the FE/FT engines later. So Studebaker~Hudson gave their Last Gasp in the '60s. Well, Dudes and Dudettes, Hoping a little History/Critique Supplement hasn't harmed anyone, unless Vanity is a factor...

In the Rootes brothers era the Reginald Rootes insisted that often tiny changes to styling were made every year. Which is why things like chrome finisher strips, over riders paint schemes are rarely the same on any two cars.

Like British motorbikes most of its fans are dead or will be in ten years. That lowers the barrier to entry just like the (many) other vehicles whose fan base aged out and died. (I was alive when the T and A Model Fords peaked (early 1970s) then the men who dreamt of them in youth died. Today restored Fords are so cheap they're often cut up for hot rods as they're far too slow for the modern street. The old Britcar (and Britbike) fanbase are departing so keep an eye out. Have something reliable as a main ride and for best results ignore everyone who view them through rose-tinted spectables because what they REALLY miss is their youth. Spitfires helped kill British Leyland but if you like to wrench you'll be fine.

It was a very good car!

American buyers just weren't interested in buying a car that resembled a space ship. The front looked like a Chevy Beretta and the rear looked like an Escort. The side look was unique. It had to compete with the Mustang, the later Ford Probe and the Escort GT. People who really wanted a sporty European sedan, bought the popular Saab 900 or BMW 318/325. The styling just didn't vibe with Americans and they were pricey.

That car is missing 2 badges. A chrome suzuki S badge on the hood and a chrome Cappuccino badge on the boot above the lock. The interior isn't leather either.

I drove one 79 miles a day for 3 years. These are the absolute worst vehicles ever made. Where to start. They fail by any measure used to evaluate autos. Every single measure. Don't, just don't.

Now I always thought the original ones were powered by rubber bands and the upgraded models were clockwork. The only problem was the key was 4 foot long and it took 2 to wind it.😅🤣😂😅🤣😂

When these first came out. I thought they would of made cute looking ice cream trucks. But unfortunately they are not tall enough in the cargo area.

My dad had a 1968 and 1969 Crown 4 door Sedan. Of all the Imperials of the mid late 60's these is indeed the rarest. The total for the 3 year production run was under 4000 units. I found these to be better than the Cadillacs and Lincolns of the era. However, the 67- 69 Imperials could not compare to the 1964 - 1966's.

Besides the 1963 Buick Riviera, this is probably the most beautiful automobile ever styled at GM. It still looks modern almost 60 years after it debuted in 1967.

I would have to say the 380 or 500SL is best due to either fuel economy380 or 500 due to 245HP, which has more power than the 560

When you're rating a 30+ y/o car you should probably add "parts availability" as a scoring metric.

I remember these cars very well, and not for a good reason. They RUSTED so quickly that it couldn't be true! Some examples only three years old had terminal rust issues. Word was that if you listened carefully, you could hear the thing fizz as it rusted.

The backup light in no way was an afterthought. Even though it was a newer requirement , Cadillac had backup lights back into the 1950s I know as far back as 1958 Cadillac had backup lights. Probably before that date. If any was backup lights were seemed to be an afterthought was the 71-78 . The backup lights was filler for the opening for the wider European licenses plates. They were basically a cost savings so the trunk worked in both markets.
