2022 Nissan Armada review // Who really needs a full-size SUV?

  • This is a Motormouth couple car review of the 2022 Nissan Armada full-size three-row body-on-frame SUV. Big, Bold and Rugged, the Nissan Armada! Last year, the Nissan Armada SUV got quite the makeover with improved power, the addition of the new Nissan logo, a squarer front end, prominent headlights, a new rear bumper and taillights and a bolder Armada script. The Nissan Armada also has changes to the interior as well with a larger 12.3” touchscreen, wireless Apple Carplay and wired Android Auto, a new 7” gauge cluster and a new centre console. We didn’t get the opportunity to drive the 2021 model, so when the 2022 arrived, we thought we would take it for a spin. The Armada has lots of positives, it’s an 8-passenger SUV, it offers plenty of power, space, storage, comfort, an isolated cabin and excellent towing capacity at 8500 pounds, but where it falls short is in fuel economy, its competitors do better especially since they offer a variety of powertrains. The Armada gets 17.5L/100 km, 13 MPG city and 12.9L/100 km, 18 MPG highway with gas prices at an all-time high, this is a tough one to swallow. I would much rather go with something like the Toyota Sequoia Hybrid if I really needed all this space and towing capacity, it can tow up to 9,000 pounds. The Nissan Armada SUV has a 5.6L V8 with a 7-speed automatic transmission, 400 horsepower and 413 lb-ft of torque. Standard 4WD in Canada and in the US, 2WD and 4WD options are available. The Nissan Armada starts at $70,498 CAD for standard 4WD and in the US 2WD $49,900 USD and 4WD $52,900 USD. In Canada, it comes loaded with a 12.3” touchscreen with Navigation, 7” instrument cluster, surround view monitor, wireless Apple Carplay and wired Android Auto, wireless charger, Bose Sound System, power driver and passenger seats, driver seat memory, heated front seats, leather upholstery, heated steering wheel, a moonroof and a power liftgate. In the US, with the lower starting price not all these features are standard, move up to the higher trims for extra options. We are driving the Nissan Armada Platinum trim without the captain’s chairs, price as tested $77,998 CAD/$69,200 USD.

    There is no substitute for their V8 performance and interior space of a full-size SUV. When I was still a student at university, there was a professor who only owned full-size SUV, who needs to commute between Langley and Burnaby, on freeway 1 everyday. I still remember it fondly. She drove a GMT-900 Chevy Tahoe, similar to MotoringTV's crew truck GMC Yukon, vintage. Given the reliability of GM full-size truck, she probably still owns one.

    hello Zack and Andrea this vehicle is sold as NISSAN PATROL LE in my homeland as Zack mentioned in the review. The price is around US $ 83,490. It is pretty expensive considering PERU is a developed country and our earnings are lower than Canadians. Greetings from LIMA PERU. Another great review keep it up. BTW, We do not get the TOYOTA SEQUOIA but We get the TOYOTA LAND CRUISER PRADO V8.

    I remember growing up in Abu Dhabi seeing these around before moving to Toronto, the Armada was one of my dream cars. Though now, I'd say the Expedition Max / Suburban / Yukon XL is the best in class. Sequoia is great provided people don't need the 3rd row.

    I love my 2018 Armada. Rented one to drive to Disneyland and fell in love with it. Came back and bought one. Shipped it to Oahu when we moved so we don't put a lot of miles on it so gas is really not an issue. I do like the new interior but can't justify the expense right now as mine is paid off. Great vehicle. Towed my 31 foot travel trailer back in Cali. Cons. the rear seats take forever to lie flat. I would love the new navigator as the interior is the best of any full size and the 3rd row is huge!!

    I rarely see these on the road (the QX, the Sequoia or Lexus LX). I absolutely love these full size SUVs, especially over the American options. I have never driven or been in one. But they (this along with the Infiniti QX56/80) have always impressed me in that they looked very luxurious on the inside, but were less than good looking on the outside (particularly the Infiniti). Which oddly is why I prefer them over the competition (akin to an ugly well loved sweater or cat). Thanks for another very interesting review. (Andrea, great information and impressions. I have owned Armada's since 2008, I have driven a 2012 Platinum for a while, and will be keeping it. That model is 9100 towing air ride stabilized. Every vehicle in that class are more expensive, and while it maybe smaller in some since, I can trailer whatever. But, the Toyota Sequoia with the Twin Turbo's are not getting good reviews. And, mine even being 10 years old, still offers everything I need and want.

    I love my Armada but I am trading it in this weekend for a more fuel efficient vehicle at this time. I only get 14.5 mi to the gallon in my Armada with me traveling a lot. That just doesn't work for me anymore. Great vehicle though. Never had an issue. I have had mine for 3 years

  • @briansleepylee

    We just bought a 2017 as the used market is finally coming back down to earth. We have a smaller vehicle for the city so we are super fussed about mileage. But for road trips and towing our trailer, the Armada is fantastic. It is a beast in the snow and is secure. Did you guys mention if the new 400hp model requires premium fuel or not? I believe it does. Also our 2017 has rear helper-air bags for self levelling - you're saying that the 2022 doesn't have them anymore? Keep up the great work!

    The Nissan Patrol/Armada is as reliable as the Toyota LandCruiser, it's a pitty then don't have any modern alternatives to the V8 engine. Don't get me wrong, that V8 is fantastic and it will live hundreds of years if maintained well, but boy it's thirsty.

    • @johncanalese588
      @johncanalese588 Před rokem +1

      what do you mean by modern? The VK56VD V8 in this vehicle IS very advanced so iI'd call it modern! Its a 32-valve, quad-cam with the VVEL system that continually varies the valve timing and valve lift to get great low down torque and manage consumption. It ain't an old-school pushrod 16-OHV V8.

    Very good and informative review, Zack and Andrea. Here is one design flaw on Nissan’s part. The second row seats do not have the tilt and slide forward feature like many other newer SUV’s have in this segment these days. So for a family with three young children and if even two of those kids require child seats, there is no access now to the third row. And, if you were to put one child seat in the third row then there goes your cargo space. Guess I have to wait for the kids to grow before considering this vehicle lol. Too bad cause I really like it.

    The armada does have the rear air ride for leveling the rear end when tow. It does not have the HBMC system which is found on the QX80. You will notice the one with HBMC has even less body roll. Of course the magnatic ride on the GM full size suv is definitely the new gen tech. However not sure about the longivity though.

    You know we know what else is really good with this SUV different than the Tahoe and the Suburban and the Yukon and the expedition this vehicle that your Nissan Armada has a much better reliability rating than those Vehicles she's a tank and she does not break down it has a lot of old school features and it's reliability is really great you buy one you can keep it for years on top of years and it will keep going

    The Armada for the Nth American market is primarily aimed at the Luxury Barge/Mall Crawler market. The Nissan Patrol, that has been around for about 50 years as a model and is sold globally is a different beast. The Patrol in Australia for example is made for true Towing and Off-road duties with much more rugged drive-train like LSD rear end and diff Lockers, multi-function traction control etc. Unfortunately we don't get the updated dashboard as we are RHD and Nissan Japan didn't want to spend the money to re=engineer it. But that hideous, fat-arse rear bumper is thankfully not fitted to our Patrol's
