    I feel like Laini Taylor's writing definitely fits what I'd call "magical". I really fell in love with her short story collection Lips Touch Three Times because additionally to her magical, whimsical writing, it's also got these wonderful watercolour illustrations. (I don't know if you've read it, but I think everyone should read it so this is just a recommendation for everyone.)

    Definitely adding The Glass Sentence and Uprooted to my TBR list. They sound so interesting!
    I'm an avid fantasy enthusiast myself, and some of my favorite magical/whimsical books (that aren't ones that I know you've read Reagan) are the Sister's Grimm series, the Neverending Story (which is an absolutely amazing classic that is surprisingly quite different than the movie, but doesn't take away from the experience of the movie in my opinion), The Order of Odd-fish (which isn't so much magical as it is whimsical and quirky), and The Golem and the Jinni (which I actually read initially because I saw it in a video of yours and thought the cover was pretty).

    the only one I've already read from this list was the Search for Wondla. I liked it a lot; especially the setting and concept behind the story. The illustrations are also lovely. I thought the characters fell a little short of being completely believable and 3 dimensional. But overall I definitely think it's worth a read because it's so original and unique and it really leaves you wondering how everything came to be that way! Haven't read the rest of the trilogy yet but I plan to.

    You should definitely read the Edge Chronicles, like Beyond the Deepwoods! There are really nice illustrations and they are whimsical and magical! There are so many in the series, but you don't have to read them all because it's a collection of trilogies! They're middle grade but great!

  • @MoiraMcGill
    @MoiraMcGill Před 6 lety +1

    I recommend the Song of the Lioness series :)
    It's about twins who both have natural magical talents however while the male is fascinated by it scares the female who'd rather learn to fight. The story starts off when their widower father decides to send them off for schooling - the boy to become a knight (since they're nobles) and the girl to become a sorcerer. Obviously neither of the twins liked the idea of that and so they get the idea to switch places, so the combat loving girl could learn to become a knight and magic loving boy a sorcerer.
    They're able to pull it off because they're still very young (between 8 and 10, can't remember exactly because it's been a while) and are identical. In these books it's not weird for males to learn magic however it is mostly seen as a female thing.
    We follow the female as she grows up and schools in knighthood, learns and struggles to high her gender amongst her male peers, and adventures into the world. While it does have her experience lust and romance it does not heavily focus on them nor does she let it be a distraction, and she isn't a bland angelic virginal trope. She is a badass who doesn't take shit and tries to be practical :) I'll end there because I don't want to give spoilers ~

    Carry On by Rainbow Rowell! It starts off kind of Harry Potter ripoff-y, but it grows out of it and the magic system in it is so cool. It's not as hardcore fantasy as a lot of book and it has a lot of contemporaryness in it because Rainbow Rowell normally writes contemporary.

    Recommendations:
    I'm assuming you've read the Golden Compass series by Philip Pullman Reagan. And I really really recommend any of the books set in Tortall (there are about 4 different quartets to choose from) by Tamora Pierce.
