  • Due to overwhelming demand, we're pleased to announce a repress of I DREAM OF WIRES: HARDCORE EDITION, our independent documentary epic exploring the history, demise and resurgence of the ultimate electronic music machine - the MODULAR SYNTHESIZER. Available to order now from our new SCIENCE WITH SYNTHESIZERS webshop: www.sciencewith... and coming soon to other select retailers.
I Dream of Wires: Hardcore Edition is a companion to the forthcoming feature-length documentary, I DREAM OF WIRES. An alternate/extended cut, the Hardcore Edition is 4 hours in length, custom made for hardcore modular synthesizer and electronic music fanatics. Originally intended as a limited edition pressing, available exclusively to IndieGoGo and pre-order customers, interest and demand for the Hardcore Edition has surged since copies were shipped in August 2013. It seems that a 4-hour documentary about modular synthesizers isn't as niche as we thought! While 4 hours may seem excessive, feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, which has only reinforced our own feelings that the Hardcore Edition is a fun and compelling watch - one that deserves to be seen by a wider audience.
I Dream of Wires: Hardcore Edition includes an exclusive, lengthy historical primer, exploring the early development of modular synthesizers from pioneering companies Moog Music Inc. and Buchla and Associates. From there, we find out what's happening now: the phenomenal resurgence of the modular synthesizer - exploring the passions, obsessions and dreams of people who have dedicated part of their lives to this esoteric electronic music machine. What started out as a "vintage-revival scene" in the '90s has grown into an underground phenomena with a growing market of modular obsessives craving ever more wild and innovative sounds and interfaces. Today, the modular synthesizer is no longer an esoteric curiosity or even a mere music instrument, it is an essential tool for radical new sounds and a bona fide subculture.
Interview subjects include musicians and producers Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails), Gary Numan, Vince Clarke (Erasure), Morton Subotnick, Chris Carter (Throbbing Gristle), Daniel Miller, Carl Craig, Flood, cEvin Key (Skinny Puppy), James Holden, Factory Floor, Legowelt, John Foxx and Bernie Krause, as well as manufacturers and modular industry leaders Doepfer, Modcan, Make Noise, Intellijel, Metasonix, Synthesis Technology/MOTM, Muffwiggler Mike and Andreas Schneider.

A realm where on man can take the place of an entire band or an entire symphony even. Never having to deal with creativity clashes or personal issues with other band members. Where all your energy can be put to creativity. Not locked in a world of conventional instruments and as they said not needing any musical background. Able to be creative in art without knowledge of a single chord or brush stroke and can be just as visual as looking into a painted masterpiece. My slice of Heaven. ;0)

Why not both? Try running the audio from some awful, small town amateur porn from the 80's (the more horribly produced, the better imo) into an audio input on your modular. When I inevitably get a video synthesizer, I plan on taking existing porn, and deconstructing it into something completely and utterly unrecognizable, lolz! 😂

Bruce Duncan has it right. It's the user interface that is the best part about using a modular, at least for me. Yes the sound can be great, but the hands on, tactile nature of man and machine is so powerful and invigorating.

Hello...the one at 00:52 is a test signal generator, not a synth but was the common type of oscillator used in very early electronic music...at 1:24, we have a collection of early Metasonix vacuum tube based pedals/modules...they are now available in Eurorack format.

Hello...thanks for the feedback, this little clip is simply a trailer for the film, which is going to be feature length and paced accordingly. I cut this trailer primarily to attract interest in the project and to grab the attention of potential interviewees and distributors, as such, it moves along quite quickly. I'd suggest you watch some of the extended interview videos we've posted to get a taste of the pacing and editing style more in line with the eventual film.

...the test signal generator was made by General Radio, probably in the 1960's, it is commonly used to create a reference signal in audio testing and laboratory work unrelated to music, but they were used by composers in the early days as a source of sound, as Mr. Subotnick explains in the clip just before...eventually, they were replaced by voltage controlled oscillators, Moog's being one of the earliest.

this is similar group of people to audiophiles. The iPhone music download crowd will never understand this, because convenience is not what drivers analog synth buffs or audiophiles. I am not able to afford analog synthesizers or audiophile level gear, but I highly respect these people and I am glad that they are around. Without them the only variety would be only iPod, iPhone, or iPad. I haven't by the way adopted any touch screen device yet, and people think I am crazy.

Hello...thank you for the feedback! Actually, Mr. Subotnick was describing that his first oscillator could give you two different waveforms, square and sine wave, and it had a knob you could turn to vary the pitch...that was then followed by an example of such...it was a quick sentence and one could easily miss his exact words.

Actually you can use VSTs with reason as Massive is a vst and is used quite often with it. Also Via rewire you can connect it to any other recording software and is compatable with all the major names on the market. I am not a reason user myself but I know what it is capable of and just like analog gear it can be your best friend or worst enemy.

@JoobSensei You can DIY cheaper than it is to buy modular systems just Google DIY modular synths and youll find plenty. But most can be very involved. Digitally however you can get the feel for modular by purchasing Propellerheads Reason. Reason can simulate many different analog interfaces along with digital on the front face. Upon turning it around is completly modular. I would start there with a good controler Keyboard like Novation or Akai. Be prepared to spend money in any case....
