- Shin Megami Tensei 1 is known for being the mainline MegaTen game that aged the worst. However, for me, it became my favorite entry from the Megami Tensei series.
This game has everything you want from this franchise: A great character cast, a catching story & amazing world-building....except for the Gameplay, definitely its weakest point. For Atlus, this is more than just a videogame, considering it's the game that was ported for more consoles than EVERY other MegaTen entry.
Today, we'll take a look at the 6 most known versions of Shin Megami Tensei 1, to find out which of these versions is the superior one that everyone has to play.

My biggest impossible dream is a remake of SMT I using the Strange Journey engine. It's just perfect and I don't know why Atlus has never jumped on this idea.

Awesome video, thank you so much for showing off all their unique features! After I play through SMT1 on PSX I gotta watch all the cutscenes from the Mega CD version. Speaking of the Mega CD version, that soundtrack in particular is interesting to me because going off what I know about Mega CD games, it sounds like they used the CD audio for only specific instances while using Genesis audio for common instances like battles. I believe this is mainly done to cut down on load times and such, as if the game doesn't run slow as ass already lol. At least they did a pretty cool job arranging the boss theme with the sick ass solo only in that version.

I didn't know that fact, so you're telling me that they made a hybrid between the Mega-CD & the Genesis audio? although now that I think about it, it makes quite a lot of sense; there are some tracks that sounds more "Genesish" and others more "Mega-CDish".
@@CarlosMW Yep, I know Sonic CD does something similar, having all Past variants of levels use the Genesis audio. Although it’s possible they are both just creative decisions and not just done for saving on memory and load times, still it seems common enough to be a pattern.
@@JaredThe The past tunes on Sonic CD doesn't use the Genesis audio, instead it uses the Mega-CD 8 channel PCM-chip.

Just completed the GBA version of this game in the afternoon and started playing the SNES version of SMT II few hours ago as I haven't found the English translated GBA version of the latter one. Completing the former one felt like a great achievement. I'm kinda addicted to games like SMT.
Unfortunately, the only SMT 2's versión translated to English is the SFC one

I love SMT1 and definitely one of the best MegaTen games for me and what got me to MegaTen franchise. Definitely one of solid entry of SMT series.
Now.. I think the _hoy_ scored 4 version is the best.
SFC - for atmosphere and more mt vibe music
Mega CD - for Kazuya own interpretations of events and cutscenes (voiced by Hikaru Midorukawa, aka Akihiko, the boxer man of P3)
PSX - for nice gameplay and new music arrangement.
GBA - for DDS mode (Bestiary) and Visionary
I guess, the problem why most can't play the older titles is just like you said, too outdated to play hence why many people are greatful and happy about Tom translation of PSX version.
Heck, it's a bit lucky to keep my sanity playing PSX and SNES till the end.
SMT 1 is a bit more hardcore than If Akira route or Reiko route combined.
The story got me so well too, my guy is only an high-school student experiencing hell. I even made an appreciation post both on my only news feed and MegaTen Hell back in the days.
And the fact that YHWH feared him too much that Stephen only able to salvage his soul in DR DLC makes him a formidable foe for the alignments.
One thing I'm somehow confused (and also disliked) is the disappearance of Heroine in his side after SMT 1.
Her existence is what make him stronger too.
Heck, I want to ship them so bad.
It's just unknown if the reincarnated Heroine is still older than Protag but anyway..
She loved him for sure not only just a partner in crimes, that's for sure. Even though they are reincarnation of Adam and Eva, they still not them.
Just sad about his fate in SMT 2.

I don't think SMT 1 is as complex as Akira's route, that one is straight-up bullshit sometimes, while SMT 1 is tedious during some parts of the game.
Maybe that's why I like Kazuya over the other MegaTen heroes, he was just a high-schooler who lived with his mom until everything around it was destroyed by demons, a nuclear missile & a cataclysm.
I've been thinking about multiple theories about what happened to Yuka (the Heroine) after SMT 1's event for the last three months, some of them are ridiculous like she's Madam (which is impossible considering Cerberus didn't know who she was), and others that may have some sense like her reincarnation was just a temporal stay on the human world until Kazuya achieved its goal.
By reading SMT 2's visionary items, we can conclude that before that game's events, Kazuya only had three closer friends: Cerberus, Madam & Alfred, his butler (who could be the demon summoner that called Kazuya his master after he defeated him on the first game).

Thanks for making this video. Since I was a huge fan of Personas 1-2ep I have been meaning to actually beat Smt1+2 and the various smt spin offs. I had fun emulating them in the past along with If and Majin Tensei 1+2

I just discovered that the PC Engine version was a thing and came across your video looking for more information. Very entertaining and informative. I might pick up the PC Engine version to compare to my experiences with the SFC and PS1 versions.
As an aside, the sections where you spoke over gameplay were very well recorded and presented, but I think your sound and set could use a bit of work when doing piece to camera. It was hard to hear you.

Hace un tiempo que termine la versión de SNES y me encantó, en cambio, la de GBA simplemente no me terminó de convencer y recientemente estoy probando la versión de PSX. En lo personal me quedo tanto con la versión de SNES como la de PSX. La primera la recomendaría a personas que buscan experimentar los comienzos de la franquicia en su estado más puro (sin contar DDS), incluyendo las limitaciones de su época pero con gran ambientación y atmósfera. Mientras la segunda sería a quienes buscan la misma experiencia pero con adiciones al gameplay "viejo" que no a muchos ha de gustar.
Exelente video Carlos, me haces recordar lo mucho que me divierte este juego. Sigue así con el buen trabajo.
lo que tiene la de gba es que es la que más conenido tiene, se puede considerar la más completa. lo malo de la gba son sus gráficos y colores, la música comprimida que es un midi con un soundfount barato. Por otro lado, lo que tiene la gba de positivo es que es una rom de gba, o sea fácil de emular en cualquier cosa a lo doom.
La 1ra version que jugue fue la de SNES, y a pesar que el Gameplay es algo lento le tengo algo de cariño.

Me quedaria con la de psx como la definitiva si no fuera porque parece que el autor decidió pasar por el traductor de Google a los demonios. No me detiene de jugarlo y disfrutarlo, pero esos nombres si que molestan un poco por la falta de consistencia con las traducciones oficiales y porque me cuesta reconocer cual demonio es cual a veces con los sprites antiguos.
@@reinweissritter Puede que esté equivocado, pero tengo entendido que al menos en los diálogos del juego la persona encargada del parche al Inglés optó por traducir directamente desde el guión Japonés en vez de usar los diálogos ya traducidos de la versión de Super Famicom o.o
En mi caso, intenté jugar la versión de snes por ser la única traducida al español, la pasé bien en un inicio, la historia me enganchó bastante y le terminé metiendo más de 20 horas, pero dios, es verdad que es incómodo de jugar, me terminé perdiendo y dejé el juego. Como sea, aún tengo ganas de volver a jugarlo y gracias a tu vídeo creo que me iré por la versión de ps1, parece ser la más cómoda. Muy buen video 👍

Estoy jugando por primera vez al smt 1 para ps1, algun consejo para levelear? Que ayer estuve casi hasta las 2 de la madrugada tratando de subir suficiente nivel para vencer a el primer boss del juego
Realmente no necesitas levelear en este juego, los jefes son tan fáciles que incluso te dan tanta experiencia como para subir 5 niveles de un tiro
Pero si quieres algo más específico, a Kazuya (el prota) prioriza Fuerza y Vitalidad, para Yuji (el de ropa roja) prioriza Magia y Velocidad, al igual que a Yuka (la heroína) que saldrá más adelante, y finalmente para Takeshi (el de ropa blanca y negra) puedes priorizar ataque o magia, es bastante versátil
Con respeto a los ataques, farmea dinero para comprar unas Machine Guns y unas Nerve Bullets, ya con eso los enemigos no serán problema, pero si aún así no estás a gusto, has que Yuji spamee Bufu/Bufula y Yuka que spamee Zio/Zionga para que ningún enemigo te toque nunca más (mientras que ellos sean más rápido que el resto)

Just search for the ISO with the English patch already installed. I found one the moment I wanted to play the PS1 port

Personalmente voy a empezar por la version de SFC y luego la de Playstation porque si lo hago al reves me va a costar un monton pasarme la de SFC.
Por lo del lore extendido quiza vaya leyendo cosas de la version de GBA, dudo que la juegue realmente. Junto con las escenas de Mega CD y PC-Engine CD que sinceramente están bien pero no para pasarse el juego completo solo por esas escenas creo yo.
Tengo que decir que la portada de la version de SFC me acuerda a la pantalla de titulo de Nocturne con todos los monos mirandote brigido.

For Kazuya (the MC) invest your points in Strength & Vitality, once you max them go for Speed & Intelligence (to increase defense against magic attacks); for Yuka (the female companion) prioritize Speed and then Magic (you just have to spam Zio to win the game tbh).

@@volsung1020 if you really want to do a meme build invest all your points in Luck and then go for Intelligence; that way you're going to make the most useless Megami Tensei protagonist ever created
@@CarlosMW so I’m curious isn’t LCK good for Drops and Evade? Then with INT you can have high negotiations with demons and somewhat good Magic Defense. There’s no definite breakdown of these stats online for in depth.
Luck in SMT 1 & 2 only increase your chances to obtain a random item/equipment drop, unless you're looking for a specific item or weapon it's pretty much useless.
The only game where Luck is actually a decent/good stat is in Megami Tensei 2 & Kyuuyaku Megami Tensei 2, where the only way to obtain weapons is by random drops or beating X boss.

After I published this video, someone in the comments told me there was already a remake made in RPG Maker, unfortunately, it's in Japanese, and I have zero knowledge of that language.
If this game gets a new official release, I would love it to receive the same treatment as Strange Journey Redux; or if it does the jump from 1st person view to 3D, playing it with the same engine that SMT V had would be a dream

It's like, the 5th time I restart playing this game (never got past Minakata).
I dropped the RPG Maker Version, the encounter rate is not balanced in either options.
After this video I started playing the Playstation version and with some Fast Forwarding I already beat the Douman.
This time I'll beat this game for sure!
SMT VX is definitely NOT the best version to start with SMT 1
You have way more options compared to the original game, but the difficulty is too high.

@@ProjetoPersonaBrasil don't worry about that, SMT 1 is an easy game (and that fight is skippable if you're Law aligned).
Unfortunately, I know no one who worked in any of those projects, what I KNOW is there's a team that is working on translating Devil Summoner for PSP to English and Spanish.
If you're planning to translate PS1's SMT 2 to English you're free to do it, I'm pretty sure no one is working on it

I finished Shin Megami Tensei on PS1.
I finished it but I feel bad.
I chose the path of chaos hoping to face god in the end or something but I only faced the archangels and... that was it?
I liked the cutscenes of chaos hero getting exploded and lucifer flying to the moon.
The part I had the most fun with was when I discovered that getting the hino kagutsuchi sword after the flood was going to be much more difficult, but I managed to do it (I needed about 5 tabs on smt fusion calcutor and 2 excel spreadsheets).
Maybe that was a mistake because I broke the game, practically every enemy became autobattle, including the archangels.
The boss I had the most fun with was the one that was immune to Sword and basic Attacks, the other 3: autoautoautoauto.
I'll definitely go back to this title, playing this time on hard, but now, I'm going to move on to translating SMT2 on the PS1.
Thank you for encouraging me to play this game, I definitely wouldn't have beaten it without your advices.

If you would have chosen Neutral instead of Chaos, you would have to face Michael and Asura as final bosses; there isn't a true final boss unlike SMT VX that actually added several ones.
Tbh, I didn't bother to get the Hinokagutsuhi for being too grindy for a game that is already easy, I only used Masakado's Sword and it worked just perfectly
You didn't break the game, the game is easy AF with the exception of the bosses that repel physical attacks haha

hace un par de años q me pase el de gba, es un juegardo tiene una vibra única, estaba pensando en volverlo a jugar en una versión diferente pero creo que volveré a la de gba viendo que no hay una versión definitiva

Personally I think the SFC is the best one, its atmosphere is something the other versions lost, and if you don't like the encounter rate then get Estoma, it negates every encounter regardless of level lol. The ost is also better in my opinion, but PSX is fine
Personally, I think the MEGA CD keeps the atmosphere as good as the SFC version, it sucks that that version runs like ass though.
@@CarlosMW I played it once, but it felt clunky and slow, but I appreciate its ambition. PC-ENGINE CD is the worst version probably, worse than GBA since PC-ENGINE CD is just SFC, but worse

I am interested in hearing why you love SMT1, I have beaten it and I' have a hard time guessing why the MC appealed so much to you for example.The reasons might be personal, but that makes me even more curious.
It's pretty simple, I love his first design (the one before the PS1 look), and also, when you play the same game 6 times in a row you start to enjoy it more and more.
Kazuya is a silent protagonists, but his story feels so relatable that it made me like him more than other MegaTen protagonists (although he's no longer my favorite protagonist; he's the 2nd one tho haha)

Yo aún no he jugado Overclocked, pero es probable que lo juegue una vez que empiece y termine el Majin Tensei 2 (y que pena tener que oir eso, lo bueno es que las 3DS se han devaluado muchísimo en estos últimos años, y emularla igual es algo fácil)

I'd love a remake of this one. I think SMTIV was the best overall for me because of how it actually made me like the characters just like SMT did, but also had the more evolved battle system. SMTIII and V fell a bit short for me just because I didn't care about any of the characters (and SMTIVA characters were a bit too isekai anime for me). I think if they combined the story and character growth of the first SMT with the modern system it might surpass SMTIV for me. TBF I still need to get around to finishing SMTII though.

Eu joguei recentemente uma versão do PS1 traduzida por fã e foi uma experiência muito boa. Estou torcendo por um remake, uma vez que persona está nesta onda. Acho a narrativa de SMT V bem confusa, apesar de adorar o gameplay deste jogo. E pra mim, SMT III, SMT IV, Strange Journey e esse são as narrativas que eu mais gosto.
Adoro Shin Megami Tensei I, e para o meu gosto sempre preferi os jogos retro SMT mais do que os novos.
Há algo na atmosfera que simplesmente não é mais visto nas edições posteriores.

SMT I tem uma atmosfera bem envolvente e aquele plot twist fantástico no meio da história que na primeira vez, me deixou agoniado pra saber o que ia acontecer, rsrs. Aliás, é a terceira vez que pego ele para zerar, pois o fiz no SNES, no GBA e agora no PS1.

I do feel like smt1 on snes is it's own unique experience that you can see why it kick started the franchise. The tone and setting feels extremely uneasy and oppressive as you try to navigate a world flooded with demons and how things will turn for the worse as you get deeper into the story.
I also think for as much flack as the graphics get, they have a distinct style and watching the demons sprite move adds to the other worlding sense it has.
While I can believe that most people would prefer ps or gba version, the snes one just fits the game the most.
It surprises me that a lot of people here in the comments argue the SFC version is the best one from the bunch, I never thought that version would receive that much support to be honest.
It may not be the best one for casual players, but it still a great version in my opinion.
@@CarlosMW Yeah I think also part of it is nostalgia too because the snes translated has been around for so long and was easy to access. I remember downloading the rom after playing smt4 which was my first game of the franchise

@@CarlosMW nope. Still being worked on to this day. Also that's the Japanese rpg maker version that you're talking about. This is an English remake using the Japanese version as a base but everything is being remade. Including the graphics. Adding cutscenes and voice acting among many others

SMT 1 is just the best game in the series period. Persona and spinoffs included. Perfection from beginning to end. Gameplay. Music. Vibe. Everything. Also, you got the cannon names wrong

@@CarlosMW well from what I've gathered the cannon name coming from kanenko himself in his book of demon illustrations for smt 1 for the snes along with that game's booklet that came included with the game itself was as follows MC: Futsuo law hero: Yoshio chaos hero: waruo. I only know this because I've worked on some translation documents for the game and I've done intensive research on the subject including reading the mangas. But you should definitely give the rpg maker version a try. Even the Japanese one if you can somehow navigate through the Japanese menu etc because there's so much extra content added to it that it is amazing. Including a whole new ending, more demons. More alignment choices. A way more fleshed out yuriko who joins you all the way back to after the old man shows you the vision of your first boss fight and says you're not ready. She also gives you your first gun which is her new nambu. A whole new heroine. The neutral heroine. Etc. It's akin to that of persona 5 vs persona 5 royal. Very worth it. You can see some of the changes on the CZcams video that I linked earlier
I knew you would say Futsuo & others are the canon names, and you're right; however there is something about naming the SMT 1 characters by the names I mentioned in the last comment, i know there aren't the canon names but fits so well in them.
Once the English rpg Maker version is finished, I'll definitely give it a try and make a video about it.

I can't agree with most of these points. Even when you're *technically* right about something looking better overall, such as graphics/aesthetics... visual presentation means fuck-all if the game has visual chopping... or in the case of the PS1 with its overdone 3D spaces which in my opinion is an insulting touch that games have been doing with 2D games for too long. If I want a 2D game, I want a _2D GAME_ with everything being handled by excellent spritework, not intermixing 3D environments with 2D sprites.
Also, the Super Famicom cartridge looks really nice in my opinion. It's simple and sleek. Out of all the other options you showed, the only one I liked besides that was the PC-Engine disc.
Lastly, while all the new demons added in various versions were pretty neat additions, I'd gladly sacrifice all of them to not have overdone profile images of each character. I like that you can't really make out their faces in the SNES version, it leaves more to the imagination. Not that I have a problem with the direction the art has gone in recent years, I'm a fan of the SMT1 protagonist's modern design which can be seen in SMT IV: Apocalypse's DLC, but I actually don't like a lot of the artwork for the human characters that you can see on the various covers. The SNES one is best, in my opinion, simply because the characters are so far away and do not present that problem.
One thing I will say, though, is that the mobile and GBA ports never stood a chance. Even if they were good, it's so niche for someone to have a device that would play the mobile version comfortably (i.e. - having a physical controller built-in or a great accessory for it) and not have to worry about updating their firmware and losing the game's functionality, and the GBA port, like so many, is almost always a neutered version. You see it most in 2D platformers, but many more games suffer from it. The GBA version just looks awful in nearly every way. I like the simple look of the cartridge, though... as a collector I could see myself grabbing it for a few bucks just to have it.
But no, emulating the SNES or PS1 ports is the much better experience. Maybe you could emulate the others, but they're not as simple and easily identifiable and, of course, SMT1's fan translation for the SNES is fucking fantastic.
Most of all, however, is the fact that there is an astoundingly well-done guide for the SNES/Super Famicom version that can be found on GameFAQs. I do not know if there are any significant changes to the other versions and their layouts, but if there are, they are automatically less compatible with that guide and it is the perfect companion piece to the game. Plus, there's a bug in the SNES version that allows you to get a powerful weapon early-game and that makes some frustrating sections much more tolerable, so that's another mark in its favor, assuming no others have that bug, which they may.

I've played and completed the GBA version of SMT 1. The visuals were much better than the SNES one. Then I played the PS1 version of SMT 1 and I must say this version is even better the GBA one. Wish there was a definitive version of SMT 1. C'mon Atlus!!!

This is going to be a strange hot take but I think that the RPG maker VX remake of SMT1 is the definitive way to play the game.
It's that strange tbh. I also thought the same before giving VX a try, but after I made some progress I realized it's a great reimagination of the first SMT, but I doubt it's the "best" one considering the amount of changes there are.

No como tú, Digital Devil Story Megami Tensei.

@@CarlosMW Bueno, digamos que las mazmorras son fáciles de perderse y el ratio de aparición de los demonios es bastante alto (aclaro que estoy jugando la versión original de Super Nintendo/ Super Famicom).
Sobre Devil Survivor, al menos el primer juego de esa duología, es como el primer Shin Megami Tensei, pero reemplazando la exploración y metiendo trableros y conversaciones como si fuera una mezcla entre Novela Visual y RPG Táctico como a lo Summon Night, Digimon Survive, entre otros.

Me quedaría con la versión de PS1 por el gameplay y la recomendaría SÓLO para los que ya jugaron la de SNES. Esta versión de PS1 no la recomendaría como primera toma de contacto con la franquicia, ya que encuentro inferior la dirección del arte de exteriores y algunos interiores (por más que el de la SNES sea tremendamente simple), además los colores que utilizaron en los mapas exteriores me parecen directamente feos, y ya ni hablar de la banda sonora si la comparas con la de SNES.
Mi versión definitiva del juego sería algo así:
- Intro: Mega CD, con menor duración, sin voz y con la música de la intro de SNES
- Jugabilidad: PS1
- Banda Sonora: SNES
- Arte de interiores: Dirección de SNES con el nivel de detalles de Mega CD y talvez también robar algunos diseños de esta versión. Todo esto con los gráficos de PS1
- Exteriores: Colores de Mega CD con algunos edificios de GBA. Los gráficos, lo mismo de arriba
- Sprite: SNES
- Retratos: Los que dibujaron para el relanzamiento en PS1
+ Las cosas que metieron en la versión de GBA y las secuencias de Mega CD
Si no mal recuerdo, hay una versión para PC que ya se hizo y otra la cual se esta haciendo que se supone que tendría las mejores virtudes de cada uno de los ports al igual que cosas nuevas como una heroína 100% neutral y un final en donde todos los héroes se unen. Desconozco mucho de ese juego fanmade eso si, supongo que podría ser material para algún video futuro jaja
