- Platonic philosophy of "Idealism" for Humanities class (Dr. George Brooks)
Note: Several viewers have brought to my attention the audio problem of this only coming out of one speaker--my apologies, these videos were made by digital media students at the college and are of uneven quality. It is better to watch this with your internal computer speakers rather than under headphones or any stereo set-up. I will try to get this fixed when the pandemic is over and I can return to campus.
My left ear is now none the more wiser
Lol thought my earphones were broke, its strange but good lecture all the same
😂 😆 😂
Pro-tip, on your phone and most pc's you can merge audio channels. Search for Mono in settings.
Absolutely brilliant well structured very informative
just turn on your mono audio settings
I've been listening to all "expert" instructors on youtube from Yale to whatever yet this instructor takes the effort to make Platonism comprehensive in terms of the STUDENT and speaks to the student-not at them. Thanks for the effort. I am so happy i finally get it.
vmcurry1 I’m impressed with his lecture, it’s amazing how much the TEACHER can change the dynamics of the lecture. 🤙🤙🤙
_the only one who has the capacity to teach one platonism is one who is a platonist. there is more than meets the eye. that's the whole point_
_for one, platonism is about asking questions and awakening a desire in the one so hearing (if you understand) to resolve the matter_
_plato would recoil in sheer terror at seeing with his eyes how far his teachings have fallen, at the totally corrupt state of "universities at present" -- the modern sophists who borrow his good name at interest. stranger, give it back_
A lot of online videos have teachers that talk a mile a minute or get off on tangents and you end up not learning a damn thing.

no one:
this video: 31 second silent introduction
31 seconds were meant for thinking about the title and for questioning as to why the hell the intro is taking so long Philosophy is confusing like that lol.
@@marissatrevino1515 LMAO i love this opinion
Thanks for making this lecture public! What a great introduction to plato's philosophy.

Agreed!! I can’t get enough :)
Thank you for sharing. I threw away the first 27 years of my life. I remember the day I finally broke... it was a private moment. But I’m here now and trying to learn. If you and others like you didn’t share this knowledge and let me benefit from a man who has his house in order... I just don’t want to know where I’d be.
This has changed my relationship with reality. It’s been bouncing around my head for months now since I first listened to this.
Yeah, Plato will do that to you!
Honestly I can't believe I haven't read Greek philosophy before, it's super illuminating
Good to hear mate👍
That was absolutely fascinating, ive just started trying to get into philosophy at 30 and nothing ive seen or read so far was as clear as this, its made perfect sense, id love to see more, thanks very much
@@matthewbullock8736 I know, I wish he would create more content, and I wish we could help. I do know one person who helps youtubers grow and he does it for free if your content is good. Maybe I can try.
Just wanna say thank you Mr. Brooks for making these complex ideas available, and in a plain-spoken way, to those of us who might not ever see the inside of a college classroom. This is important stuff. You are doing good things for the progress of humanity.
Happy you enjoyed this--and thank you for your kind words.
'evil is just lack of or ignorance of good' - that's an interesting take by plato
This should be required or at least offered at every high-school in this nation! I am so grateful to you and CZcams!
Lol why do you think it isn't.
This class is beautiful. Philosophy really is the way for human growth

Great lecture! Thorough, yet precise. Thanks for sharing on CZcams...We are all so lucky to have this opportunity.
Thank you for sharing part of your lecture with us Dr. Brooks.
Excellent lecture.
Excellent explanation of how possibly Plato himself has had reached the idea of ideal form.
Thanks Dr. Brooks.
Starting college again after a many year break. Stumbled upon this video! Very well explained and super helpful to me. Thanks george!
Very, very helpful. I wish I had listened to this lecture years ago. Thank you Professor Brooks!
This is the best lecture on Plato I have heard by far. Plato was my favorite Greek philosopher and one of all time favourites. But over the years I heard some shoddy commemtary on him, and I started liking Aristotle more. This lecture overturns that.
the coolest lecturer youd ever know get this man is an award
This was the best lecture on Platonism and idealism I have ever listened to. I understand that philosophy now more than I ever had before.
*Serious round of applause* Thank you very much. You are a great teacher.
I absolutely LOVE and appreciate these lectures. Its so enriching in the best way and made me realize I’ve been a platonic thinker my whole life. Thank you 🙏🏻🤍
This is perhaps one of the greatest ideas I have ever heard, ever. More please and thank you. Brilliant. Thank you

Dr. Brooks thank you for this lecture it was delightful, and your explanations are very helpful. I hope you will post more of your lectures soon.
Fantastic lecture. I am fascinated by this. It seems similar to knowing Natural Law. The founders were very educated and practiced the 7 liberal arts and sciences.
Thank you, Professor Brooks, for making Plato comprehensible. I can now see why he was so influential. Thank you!
Regardless if you are a high-school teacher or a college professor you are an exceptional educator sir.
You sir are an example of what TEACHING is! Much respect and thank you!
Thank you for the kind words--glad you enjoyed it.
A very concise definition of participation and idealism. Thank you, I watched this months ago and have since read Republic and many other dialogues.
Finally! A cogent explanation by an excellent teacher.
What a great class! If only all college classes were this engaging.👍
You are a great lecturer. You spin a very engaging and interesting narrative. Love it! After reading the apology and the republic it's nice to hear more context and history.
Damn. It's 2022 now, and I fancy myself to have an understanding of this already... I still found this extremely valuable with respect to my own thinking. Thank you Dr. Brooks.
Wonderful lecture I am fascinated with philosophy thanks
My dear God, bless this man.
Absolutely fantastic lecture on plato and his philosophy. It has cleared up a lot of confusion and connected a lot of dots for me! Thanks.
This is an incredibly interesting lecture that is very well carried out, engaging and educative. Dr Brooks has a great rhetoric which keeps you glued to the screen and makes you itch for more knowledge. Hope to see more of this!
Excellent exposition! I personally don't have the time at the moment to delve into Plato; although, he's been one I've been wanting to study for some time now. In the meantime, these classes will greatly suffice. Thank you very much for your knowledge, time, and effort.
I would like to Thank Dr. George Brooks
for the phenomenal Lecture as it truly shows his understanding of philosophy Bravo
THANK YOU!!!^^ your lecture was awesome and very informative and fun. You're a great instructor!
This was awesome.. what a cool teacher and absolutely good lecture. He knows how to break it all down so you can grasp what the philosophers were trying to convey to us. Awesome video 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
What a great lecture! I can’t wait to listen to more. Thanks for you wisdom
Thank you for making this public. I enjoyed spending my Friday evening listening to your lecture. I found your lecture because I was looking for an audio version of Plato's Cave. I was hoping to grasp a deeper insight into the concept of Christian "repentance" as equal to the concept of the form of "change." Your lecture nailed it! Thank you!!!
Awesome video! You made me think the right side of my earphones is not working.
Hey George, I'm starting your videos today and I've gotta say I'm really enjoying it so far. Thanks for uploading these! Side note I believe this is what the internet's best self is. Sharing pure knowledge with no ulterior motive, just to inform the masses.
This video made being stuck at home a lot more interesting. Thank you!
Exactly
This was a lovely explanation.Very comprehensible. Thank you, you earned a sub :)
Thank you so much for making clear connections with the Constitution and Christianity. I had heard of these connections, but your lecture made the connection real.
When i was a kid i hated school, teaching .... anything related to it realy. Now at the age of 32 I am appriciating it. Thank you whoever you are. You are an amazing teacher, transferring this amazing knowledge to poeple like me. Thank you Thank you and thank YOU
Beautiful lecture, I feel inspired watching you teach. wish I had the head I have now 10 years ago.
You are the best teacher have ever met, now I can write my exams well... Thank you sir
7:44 refutes thomism on the Peripatetic axiom
21:58 proves orthodoxy on the TAG
Greek philosophy is very interesting it opened my mind. It's hard to believe 3000 years ego Greece has many brilliantly thinkers like Plato.
sooooo....Plato wasn't great? Interesting...care to define great or explain why he isn't?
Great=NOT. Right
This was 500BC
I’m loving this lecture. Thank you
Hats off to your teaching abilities professor!
I never knew anything about philosophy but have recently discovered it and read Plato's The Republic and found it fascinating. I think some people are just geared to this way of thinking. I would be the one to notice someone was physically attractive and then occasionally think..... How do I know they are attractive? What is it that makes them attractive and someone else not attractive? I thought I was just weird.... until I discovered philosophy. Maybe still weird.... but at least now I know I'm not the only one 😂😂. Awesome video, I will be watching the rest of your series on Plato.
Good teacher. Like his love for this country
Great lecture. Great job presenting it. Youre students are very lucky to have a teacher like u
I am taking, intro to philosophy next week and I wanted to prep. Now I feel equipped with enough of the basics.
Thank youuuuuuu!
Thank you for the very thought-provoking lecture.
You beautiful beautiful man!!! What a pleasure to listen !
This lecture reignited my passion for philosophy 3 years ago and in the rare occasion I have meaningful dialogue with someone and share this passion, I use lessons from this lecture to introduce said person to the wonders of philosophy. I use a circle though, we know what a circle is, we can conceptualize a perfect circle but we are not capable of making a perfect circle. I may draw a circle on paper and while its tangible, physical and present, it is only a poor reflection of its ideal form... a non physical idea pulled from the ether., the logos. It was this very lecture, this very idea that shattered my perception of reality and truly changed me, I equate it to something like ego death and I have been devouring philosophical ideas ever since. I liked philosophy growing up and I was having deep philosophical thoughts at an early age but somewhere in my late teens I became a product of my environment, a shadow of my true self with a perpetual mask to conform, blend in and be accepted. Luckily I broke free or at least learned to remove the mask, and this lecture was a honestly a big part of it, maybe even the catalyst so thank you very much, truly. I'll leave you with the next two questions I pondered and still ponder.... is the good a reflection of God's ideals, or does God hold these ideals because they are good(Plato/Socrates). 7.) Is man just a blunder of God, or is God just a blunder of Man.( Nietzsche)
Thank you for your kind words--and I'm pleased that people out in the world are enjoying these little efforts, which I only filmed to provide for my online students--I had no idea they would be watched by people around the world.
your lecture really helped me keep up the good work sir
Thanks for your valuable lecture. yours is the best on plato available on the youtube. Highly recommended. Best Regards, Shekhar Sinha, India

This is a bad ass lecture man, I would of loved to be introduced to Plato like this

Truly excellent video and exceptional professor
I'd enjoy this course. Good work.
Underrated channel...worth a million subscribers..!!
Soon as he said the white board and the door my brain stuck with patterns.
The thought of patters, sticking out or maybe being picked out.
Is a subject of its own.
Amazing lecture, this is a must share! Cheers!
A great lecture delivered by a great teacher.
The best teacher ever. Very patriotic too 🙏🏾
you are an awesome educator. your lecture blew me away
Awesome lecture professor! I really miss all my philosophy classes.
thank you professor brooks! excellent lecture;)V
This is really a great lecture.. Many thanks to you Mr Brooks , you’re truly a wonderfully insightful professor..
As a Muslin who knows the basics about his religion’s entireties I can assure you that all those questions raised by PLATO are answered in the QURAN and in prophet teachings especially the super form (GOOD) which is basically GOD or ALLAH.. They’re in fact answered- to a degree- in the the BIBLE and TORAH as well.. All in all PLATO’s philosophy is a guiding enlightenment in life.. God bless
Even if you don’t smoke weed this guy will make you listen to him! Haha
Gazmend Doda ya but I just toked a bowl and i watched the other half earlier after ripping my pen it’s awesome
Still smoking and watching
I like the inspiring teaching step by step along with whiteboard presentation.
Dear sir I’m glad we have CZcams. How else could I have the opportunity to attend such a wonderful lecture
Great lecture! Many thanks for making it public.
The most interesting video on philosophy I have ever seen
Teacher is just how good u are at explain something u claim to understand * and make it understandable to ppl who want to u sweat and it
He embodies two of my favorite professors in university.
I give the teacher an A. He presents Plato's idea of universal forms in a way that is easily understood. He draws better than most philosophy professors I've seen, too. His horses look like horses.
Your lectures are amazing!
I like the attachment you make with Plato and religions.
This is brilliant. Thank you so very much.
Thank you for making me wiser!
The great channels dont seem to get support , this is a rear gem
I doubt even Plato and Aristotle didn't know the concept of "Idealism" like you.please make more videos
