Modifying My MXR Phase 90 (R28 Mod)

  • I've been meaning to mod my MXR Phase 90 for quite a while now. It's been annoying me that there is such a loud volume boost when I kick it on. When I hear other players use there Phase 90 ( Most of the time they have the script logo phase 90) there sound is so much smoother and the volume isn't as prominent. After doing this Mod I'm so happy with the sound. It's exactly what I wanted!
I hope it comes across well on video. You can definitely notice it more when you're in the room.If you notice that in the before footage there is some audio clipping so hopefully that helps and gives you an indication.

Mike has been playing the guitar since he was 12 years old, and from that first moment his love affair with music and the instrument began. Fresh out of school at the age of 16 he attended the Academy of Contemporary Music in Guildford and completed a year-long Diploma course.
After finishing the ACM his life as a full time musician began, playing in numerous bands and touring up and down the country playing iconic venues such asThe Shepherds Bush Empire, The Astoria, The Underworld and London’s Jazz Café. He’s also been fortunate enough to support industry legends Paul Weller, Blondie and Katie Melua.
Mike’s session work has led to his working on a variety of projects - from performing with stars such as Ricky Wilson and Diana Vickers, to appearing in many TV shows and adverts. Mike loves being on stage performing, but is equally at home recording in a studio - where he has worked with Alex Von Soos (All Saints, Seal, Atomic Kitten), Mike Horner (The Prodigy, Shakira, Bloc Party), and Mike Chapman (Blondie, Suzi Quatro).

I just did the R28 mod and love the result. Why they don't come this way from the factory I'll never know. My Phase 90 has gone from a pedal I never used to be permanently switched on. Great video Mike Bradley.

tdunster2011 my guess is that they sell the vintage and the EVH version for more $$$ so they had to make the new standard less desirable.

I rarely used my Phase 90, because of exactly that; the boost and the overdriven sound that comes with that too (or maybe it's the amp reacting to the boost, but either way it was not what I wanted). Thanks for sharing this video! This mod so easy, it can hardly go wrong, and now the sound is exactly what I'd expect and want from a Phase 90 (or any phaser for that matter)!

The boost in volume helps to compensate when playing in a full band for the loss in volumen when the pedal modulates.
In a bedroom settings sounds great, but playing live you’ll notice that your guitar will get lost in the mix, and you to compensate, will turn up the volume in your amp or pedals

I bought the block logo Phase 90 and exchanged it the next day for a used custom shop script 90. I felt the same way about the block 90, too harsh. The script sound worked better for me. It's funny you posted this today because I replaced my script 90 with a Phase 95 yesterday. I wanted to save space on my board and I like the extra tonal options that I can mess with in times when I'm lacking inspiration.

The EVH phase 90 has a switch to change from block to script. If you wanted you could get creative and put a switch on the block 90 that would essentially "cut" that wire when you want to and still have it in the circuit for when you want it.

I’m trying to reduce the footprint of my board cause I’ve got 19 pedals. Switched from the phase 100 to the 90 and the 90 was way overpowering on volume but effect is way better. I am doing this mod tomorrow for sure. Don’t buy the 100. While it seems more versatile it’s just WAY different and I didn’t like it. My 90s boss phaser was way better but too many options is more of a pain. I don’t wanna spend 6 hours dialing in sound. Keep it simple.
Update: just did it. Stupid easy and HUGE difference! Solved my problem

Just as a point of interest, if you had spent a couple of pounds on a mini toggle switch added it in you would have had the best of both, your pedal would be Block & Script. Easy to still to add in, I did same as you then revisited it and put the switch in. What I found was I used it in script mode 80% of the time but it’s still handy to have the block as well. Adding the switch will cost less than £5 but remember you are gaining an extra pedal for a fiver. You can find videos showing how too do it on here very easy mod.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO!!! I did it myself by just de-soldering one side of the capacitor from the board, and now it sounds so much more like Eddie's did!!! I was thinking of putting an on off switch on it and wiring it between the board and capacitor so I could change it back whenever I want. I also noticed a mini potentiometer on the board. If you turn it, it takes away or adds more warble effect.

Did a snip today. It's so much better. Video can't translate well how large of a volume boost you've got with a stock pedal. And especially if your signal wasn't crystal clean already it created this really unpleasant brittle top end. It's pretty much all gone. And the phasing itself is more subtle. If you let the notes ring it doesn't become louder than guitar itself anymore, which drove me nuts.

Wouldn't want to have to muck around with ball array chips but simple SMD discretes aren't too much bother.
Before the hot air I just used to use a very fine bit on my iron.
The more successful of the pedal modders who've now gone over to manufacturing don't want to have to bother with modding.
I'm sure Mike Analogman Could rework SMD stuff if he really wanted to ... 😉

For yourself and all others attempting to do a mod like this, NEVER USE A SCREWDRIVER TO CUT A RESISTOR OUT, YOU WILL POTENTIALLY DAMAGE SOMETHING. Use CUTTERS.

  • @lewisolvera1281
    @lewisolvera1281 Před 3 lety

Please do not desolder the resistor. This is a multi-layer board. Just snip it. From stinkpot.se website: "Then locate R28 (right above the output jack) and clip one end off. You can clip the resistor out at both ends if you like, or just cut one end and raise it enough to break the connection. I can’t stress this enough - one of the through-plated holes also serve as a pathway between the two sides of the circuit board, and it is very easy to damage it (leaving you with a dead pedal). A pair of small cutting pliers is all you need, and will keep the pedal safe and working fine."

I'm curious. What I don't like about this pedal is the volume going up and down during the phasing. It has a sound I love with the volume at the high part of the swoosh, but then it gets muddy and gets quiet. I had hoped I'd love this pedal but the up and down volume SUCKS. I'd like to find my tone, let it swoosh but keep the volume the same. I literally HATE it. My goal is set the rate of the phase swoosh and keep the volume there. It sounds like someone is turning the volume up and down as I play. Blows. Mod for that?
