Tom was just doing his part so his master(s) won't kick him out. There's this one episode that if Tom failed to catch Jerry and the little mouse Tom will be decapitated, you know how it ends, Jerry and the little mouse treat it like don't give a shit. So yeah, it's just a cartoon but I didn't expected that the show was that dark in realization.
