  • When the starter quit working, we had just a clicking sound when engaging the electric start. We ordered up a new starter and replaced the original with an aftermarket starter off Amazon, and it worked great. This is easy for a DIYer to do. Starter (affiliate link): amzn.to/3kWFi1Y

What did we do before the internet? CZcams videos and the ability to ask in forums make many task easier or at least more understandable. Thanks to a couple CZcams videos, took my lawn mower carb apart, fixed and got it back up and running for less than $10. If you ask me what the parts were all called, no idea, and not even sure what they all do, but followed the video and went from a dead lawn mower to a running one.

haha. yeah you're absolutely right. I'm guessing there were a lot more repair shops in business back then.

Thank you for this vdo. My 2002 TRX 350 starter quit working a while ago. I have been pull starting it a few months. Today I pulled the starter and took it apart to find the positive brush was gummed up in the housing, not making good contact with the armature. I cleaned everything and replaced old unit. Working very well now. I got lucky, no need to spend $ 370 for a OEM Honda starter or $35 for an after market unit. Thanks again.

Glad that worked out well for you. I took my old starter apart after I put the new one in and there wasn't any sign of gumming. I guess it was just work. I guess it could have been rebuilt, but the $35 deal continues to work great. Thanks for watching

I had a 30 year old Yamaha Moto4 and it sounded just like your Honda. Ran like new as long as I owned it. Great job. -Ed

thanks for sharing. I just bought an 06 Forman off Facebook Marketplace. It has a starter issue. you get the click but you have to tap the end of the starter for it to do it's thing. Then only once or twice and it's done. again. I assume the brush is bad in the starter motor. for 35 bucks I will replace it. I was giving it a look over and just knew I would have to remove all the plastic. Good to see just the airbox has to go. This will be a piece of cake. The old bike runs really smoothly and not a puff of smoke. The dude had installed an LED light bar that shares the hi-beam switch. I was looking for a 4x4 but for the money and I'm not a fan of heavy mudding so this will work out fine I hope.
again, you answered all the questions I had. Thanks!
    Cheers from Louisiana.

Good luck! Looking back this was over 1.5 years ago, and mine is still trouble-free after replacing with the cheap starter. Hope it works out for you too.

Thanks for this video! It gave me the confidence to change out my own 2002 Rancher's bad starter and leaking primer! Super easy project, less than an hour total.

i have a 2006 trx350, and it would not start reliably, but a few taps with a wrench on the starter and it would start. so anyhow, taking off the starter after the bolts were removed was not easy. i had to wack it gently with a hammer from every angle to loosten it, took about 10 mins of trying to wack it, using muscle , wiggling it. in hind sight, i was trying to pull it straight out, maybe i should have maybe tried to turn it to loosten it.

Good video! You made a good choice in not trying to rebuild the starter. I've done starters before, but this one was more difficult and I couldn't get it. I can't remember exactly what happened, but I ended up buying a new one and going the route you did. Also, it seems like your idle may be just a tad low. Hard to tell until it is completely warmed up. But if you ever have a problem with it stalling, look at increasing the idle just a bit. There should be a knob on the right side close to where the pull starter rope is that you can use to increase the idle just a tad.

I actually took the old starter apart just for grins after I replaced it, and it looked simple enough to take the old brushes out. I could see that repair being pretty straightforward. I'll hang on to the old starter just in case this one fails, then I might try rebuilding the old one. Thanks for the idle tip. I'll play with that since it does sometimes stall, especially if not warm.

Increase the idle speed a tad. It may start better & not over heat from long idling periods.

I didn't have any trouble with it. I sprayed every fastener with pb blaster before I started and let it soak, though.

I have a 350 rancher and I cannot budge the starter. Was yours fairly easy to get off or did you pre-loosen it before the video?

    • @WoodsTreeFarm
      @WoodsTreeFarm  Před 3 lety

I didn't pre-loosen it for the vid. I just wiggled it up-down-side-side a little and pulled it straight out. It took a little effort, but wasn't very difficult.

My bolts are off and the starter feels like it's glued in. The bolts acted like they were made of brass. They will need to be replaced. My airbox is in pieces.. This has been the biggest hassle I've done in a while and the starter still isn't out. Sigh
