FlatHead's Frame, An Awesome Bushcraft Shelter Frame

- I show in this video, an all around awesome frame as a basis for a Bushcraft or possibly a survival shelter. It can be modified and outfitted several different ways but is basically a very strong no cordage frame made with only a machete and a saw. I did not invent or design this frame. It was dreamed up , designed and created by one of my mentors who is only know as Flat Head Ed. All the credit goes to him.
This guy is so positive and upbeat! He is constantly chuckling or giggling about every little thing and it is infectious. It is an excellent attribute for an educator.

That is a fantastic shelter. You are correct when you say that boy scouts would really like building it. They would have tons of fun. Of all the shelters I have seen on CZcams, your Flathead shelter is just about my favorite. You must have had some of the best mentors. I really like this shelter because it is long term. You explain everything so well that a rookie can understand it. Thanks for the inspiration!

Hey Dave! Excellent structure. The tarp set up addressed two common complaints about tarp camping and that's wind and seepage. The second tarp provides a good workspace. I can also see it being the framework for one hell of a debris shelter. Just fill in the gaps with branches and what not, then pile on the leaves. I like your sleeping kit too. Bubble wrap? that's what I use because I can't afford the hi tek sleeping pads. For a ground lay, those plastic drop cloths painters use are cheap, durable, and keep the ground moisture away. The only other suggestion I would have is that you don't need a reflective back stop in the shelter. Why I say that is, if you have that front porch tarp going your fire is going to be off to either side and not in front. Also you just cleared some room for a camp buddy and still have room for gear. Either or, it's a cozy space that can be comfortable for one or two people.

Hi I really like the shelter along with with the one called the tarp hut. I've been trying to get together a camping outfit to try out at least in the back yard for now . The other day we were downtown and I went into our local thrift store and found a wool blanket for $4, you can't beat that and its in good shape. At the end of the month we are going north up to Northeast Ohio to visit family and friends . There is a really big thrift store up there by my brother's home so we are going there and I will look around in there for stuff I have been collecting something from there but I just keep looking for the good stuff . I really appreciate all that you are doing to show your skills in camping and bushcrafting I have to tin cans sitting on my dresser and I'm trying to figure out how to make A stove out of them . Once again thank you very much.

Thanks again Dave for ANOTHER great video! I would love to see you do a larger shelter that would allow you, your spouse and son to all fit inside! I'm looking for designs that would permit more individuals inside with the same basic design although I really like your 'twist and turn' setup on some of your other videos...just need to see a larger unit that might suffice rather than a 'store bought' tent. Wonderful shelter and ideas on using inexpensive moving blankets and tarps to get the job done! May God Bless you and yours!,

I used to work where I had access to muletape. No one else wanted it so I have several hundred feet of it. Goodness, I use it for everything. Great stuff. I'm not a master on knots, so the knots I know work for me. Thanks for all your work with the videos that help all of us live better in the outdoors.

That's a really great shelter, watched it for the third time. Wish I'd had this when I was a Scoutmaster, the boys would have really liked it, but that was 30 years ago. I'm 70 years old now & don't get to do any camping anymore. Thanks for doing these Videos, I really enjoy them. :)

That's a fun shelter. I'm hooked on hammocks under tarps. The bugs, snakes and rain can have that ground.

At about 54 minutes in, you do a lanyard wrap using your thumb with your machete. You are the only other person I have ever seen do this. I learned it when I was young, back in the 70s, from my uncle who was a cop and was giving me some of his old school night sticks that weren't considered uniform anymore. Today I'm an old ex cop who never forgot the reasons I was taught to use this technique. The thumb wrap is something people should learn about.

EXCELLENT job. I love this one tons. That Mule Tape is extraordinary. I moved an upright piano for a friend. Secured it to the bed of m6 truck. A friend scoffed at it. Dave, I am going to offer you a solution to your mosquito problem that may sound a little weird at first, but I swear this works. I got it from a canoe enthusiast on the northern border of the US in a canoe only area. He lived there during the summer and it was where all the mosquitoes go to vacation and rest up for fall. Try this. Starting now, eat 2-3 cloves of garlic a day. I know it sounds weird but for some reason mosquitoes and gnats can't stand the aroma of human sweat and garlic. You and your friends won't be able to smell it but the little kamikaze's will. I have done this for 10 years and it works like a charm. Everyone else is swatting and itching and you'll be sitting by the fire enjoying the night.

One other thing, it takes about 2-3 weeks before the human system builds up enough of the chemical combination to make it apparent. So, please don't expect gang busters every day.

I have to say, that's a neat structural design that if done with good wood. It would last indefinitely. Thanks for being a bit of a conservationist by looking for already dead wood. You're right, it doesn't make sense to chop the green stuff down for a video.
I bet when you are setting up the initial poles and top piece, you could start with just three poles instead of four, to make it easier on you.
Also, another name for that aluminumized blanket is "casualty blanket". I got a Rothco one for $13
Oh, and I'm one of the people that likes the long videos....we get to see more of your process and sometimes the trial and error.

I really like to learn about simple but effective wood joinery for bush craft so this was an especially fine video! I learned a whole lot...as is usual with your work. What was missing: you did all that effort and didn't show us how you would actually enjoy it for a day or so in the woods. Seeing the inside of the shelter by miner's oil lamp or Coleman collapsible light would have been great. I can imagine warming the inside a bit more with hot rocks if the right rocks could be found. That center plug is a fine idea that has been used by architects from time to time back through history. This is great video to simulate thinking!
Well a lot of people ask why I don't show night shots or sleeping. Honestly, I film what I have to on the build then when that's done? The camera goes off and Im done with the filming. I like down time when sleeping or eating. Having the camera on and filming kinda takes all the fun out of relaxing because its like work. I'm glad you liked it. Thanks for watching
Here we are in 2021. We have unexpectedly purchased some land near Albuquerque, NM. There are stands of local pine trees. Eventually, I will teach my Chickasaw grand-twins the skills you have been teaching all these years. I have been collecting the equipment. We have just the material to put Flathead Ed's design to use in our 'own back yard.' Our Twins will be THRILLED!"

Great shelter set up, your so right, usually when it rains the water will soak into the ground and wick inward a good foot atleast, you have to realize that when placing your sleeping area. Well done Dave, and always a pleasure to watch your vids man.

We get a lot of Canadian and American visitors to Ireland with a huge variation in accents, but you Sir have the most fantastic accent I have ever heard, it adds flavour to your excellent instructional videos, but there again I'd hazard a guess that you would have a good smile at my thick Irish-Dublin accent, great videos, great ideas and also not one bit boring or geeky thanks to your presentation !

I gotta say dave, i really admire your honesty, it would be so easy to edit out any mistakes you make while you do your videos, and make yourself appear to never mess up, but you don't. I lost touch for quite a while and now, this morning, I finally found the channel again. I love it so much I could watch the videos all day long. dude...DUDE! This has helped me solve the problem of tying three of my shelters together. That little gem that creates the dome for your tipi tarp is what did it. Brilliant! Thank you so much for dispensing your knowledge. The length of the video was perfect! Taking the time to explain the details, all while having a "Fun in the woods". I was grinning the entire time. I had seen this video years ago, and I am glad I re-visited it. Bushcraft kits change and evolve as you know. The first time I watched the video, I had no use for it, and forgot the details. But I am going to use that now! I also have a tip for your silky saw, try to get that in kydex so you can cut a hole in the bottom of the sheath, this way the Silky can remain open and you just slide it in and it is already open you go to use it again. I have the Silky Big Boy and the sheath that it comes with has this slit in the bottom. Most people don't realize the purpose was not for a drain hole, as that would have been round. Most hate the polymer sheath, I like it! Take care and I look forward to your reply to my email. I am looking forward to the picture! And do a video on it. I am sure there are viewers who would love to donate for it too!

A lot is involved and changes the cost of building. Like say you own the land you want to build on and have plenty of trees on your property to process and use or if you have to buy it.
Im not exactly sure where abouts he lives, I believe its somewhere in Georgia and because he usually seems to be in wet lands and swamps, I think he isnt up in the mountains. But where he lives wouldnt necessarily mean anything if you are building somewhere else.
Yes, there are a good size population of Black Bear in Georgia. Not sure if in his area though. To be honest though, I would be more concerned about snakes, and mountain lions, shoot even wolves or ants more than bear. Bears for the most part dont really want to mess with humans. Its when you startle them is when they get hostile.
Mountain lions hunt in the failing light and early night. They like to sneak up on and pounce on the backs of their prey. You wouldnt know whats going on until you have a massive animal on you trying to get at your neck.
Snakes can be poisonous and if you arent alert enough, you can get bitten. You dont want to be out in the middle of nowhere and get bitten by a rattler.
Wolves arent that bad if you are fairly strong, smart, and quick... that is until you got a wolf pack in front of you.... There wouldnt be much of you left after an encounter with wolves. Google "Ben Cochrane 1922." He was a fur trapper..
In truth, insects are way more of annoyance and what people more commonly have to deal with.

I ain't gonna lie to you, brother - that is quite some work to build that shelter! But it is awesome! Long term camping or survival... looks fantastic. Hell Yeah bro :) You are one of the most environmentally conscious shelter builders or survivalists out there. Others would just go ahead and kill a whole tree to make that rounded piece, but you chose to use half rotten wood to show your skills. People reading this message, watch this video over and over again and learn how to be a real mature man with consideration for our nature (or leftovers of it).
Yep, thats how I was taught and thats how I try to show it. Cutting green trees should stay for survival type situations. When a person goes camping or bushcrafting every weekend, you just cant go chopping every thing up. There will be not much left in one area.
Ok I have never been a fan of long videos but let me tell you I found this not only great information but relaxing, I think that it's incredible that some idiots that only watched 8 mins and gave it a thumbs down is a testament to those people that think they know I all and if your way is not their way than you are wrong. Love your vids and the "Alabama Hammer" still elicits a chuckle when i hear it. I found the moving blankets at Harbor Freight but found they don't seem to keep me as warm as the poncho liner when used by itself. However the grandkids found these moving blankets make excellent shelter walls when building a fort in the living room! (not too mention they can take the abuse the kids dish out!)

Dave I really enjoyed this video. I was at first hesitant because of the length but you had a lot of things to cover. It's also enjoyable to hear a voice that speaks the same WNC mountain talk that I'm used to (lol). I've watched several of your videos and will watch more of them It's just too bad that I'm to old to do the things you teach but I do enjoy watching and learning. Keep up the good work. I've subscribed for a while and you have helped me with additional hints for your projects. As an 'older fella,' I am more of a suburban, backyard camper because I have 5-year--old grand-twins. They need the security of being close to home and I need the security of being close to a good bathroom. So: our challenge is to make your things without using (unavailable) natural wood. My 'Take' is that the suburbs and PVC are synonymous: my task is to adapt Flathead's frame to the world of PVC piping and pipe connectors. I am going to give it a try! You showed viewers how to make a spark-resistant welding blanket and Reflectix survival blanket or survival tarp. I really enjoyed doing that! It needs to be on the outside of whatever structure I can figure out within the PVC world. I have moving blankets from our move to an active senior living facility. They seem to be 'dusty' but they definitely have some insulation value. My local upholstery person will get to add the tape loops. I cannot wait to make this!
