2 videos in one day. Most excellent. When we traveled in Alabama years ago, my daughter asked if Dollar General was the Alabama state store. It seemed like every small town had one.
I ran into someone a while back who went off about them destroying all the mom and pop stores in small towns. All I can say is they’ve consistently been the best resupplies down here. One thing the FTA could do to make this trail a bit smoother would be to contact some of the stores and gas stations along the way and try and get them to carry a few hiker items like knorr sides or tortillas
For the bug bites, for next time, I would recommend either Benedryl tablets or their ointment/cream or wouldn't hurt to have both. Both work great to stop the histamines that cause itching
Your vlog here is a great add for NOT hiking the Florida Trail ! LOL You are dedicated to the goal....weenie old me would have pulled out of Florida before the halfway mark ! But I guess that's why I'm sitting on my living room couch and your slogging your way through Florida ! I am enjoying your trek very much though ! So glad you had some company for that night to cheer you up ! Hang in there Masochist !! It'll be a great feeling when you get through all that and head up to higher ground
For me the thing about going through any tough section is it makes me less likely to quit. Because if I did then all that suffering would be for nothing :)
Pretty sure my feet and toes were shriveled up just watching from the comfort of my chair. The bad days make the good days better, i guess??? LOL keep on trucking brother
I’ve had non hiking friends give me crap when I get back into town and order a giant salad vs something with meat. You really don’t get it until you spend an extended period away from all the fresh stuff
The Buckeye Trail here in Ohio is similar the Florida Trail, it seems. It's a marked footpath that relatively few people thru hike, that contains some beautiful sections connected by sometimes-dangerous road walks, and that seems pointless to anyone except someone like you and, perhaps one day, me. Thanks for the inspiring, candid, and helpful videos, which I only started to watch a few days ago. I'll catch up with where you are now later this week. Then we'll walk together. So to speak.
Thanks! That trail is on my list when I can find the time. I figure maybe post CDT maybe I’ll manage to do a summer knocking off several of the shorter trails like that assuming I can stave off financial ruin and such
I’m very happy to have seen that section of the “trail”. I’m also very happy to have NOT seen that section of the trail in person. You’re a better hiker than I.
Just watched a video out out by the Georgia Trail association giving hikers info. They said 40-50 hikers a day are are starting the AT everyday since March 1st. Going to be a busy year. The Georgia volunteers are out helping the hikers by spending the night at a few of the shelters. One volunteer said she had to help a guy out of his tent because he didn’t know how. Ought to be an interesting year. I can wait to hear your prospective once you hit the herds. As always love the videos. Stay safe.
*sigh* I really enjoy meeting and talking to people but I’m also dreading the massive crowds. Last year on the PCT was about the perfect amount of people for me. If it weren’t for the whole key west to Canada thing and wanting to be a continuous footpath I’d be a Sobo.
The bites you got are chiggers bites only way to stop the itch is clear nail Polish.. Sounds crazy but take it from someone who has hiked in FL his whole life!!..just touch the brush to each spot every day for couple days or they will itch for weeks
Congrats on surviving 1001 miles! And, esp. surviving those damned NoSeeUms! Rain does not deter them and they can sneak through most mesh. A worse curse (except for the disease carrying part!) than mosquitos. But glad to see you made a good resupply that allows hot dinners (not suspicious meats from gas stations!) and even a little hiker wine! Way to go. Hike on! Tortoise
I worked for a doctor that always said to use roll on deodorant on bug bites. Roll on is hard to find but it works. By the time it dries the itch is gone.
Interesting. I got a small tube of menthol itch creme that helped take the edge off. And then scratched the hell out of my legs on branches and vines anyway so I don’t even notice the bites now...
I have warranted pairs before. Along the Pacific crest Trail of the stores will generally do it for you and give you a new pair right there. Otherwise you have to ship them back
You my friend are definitely embracing the suck As Darwin would say Excellent video as always take care and hoping those little midgets will stop biting you shortly
Usually that’s really inefficient considering I need liters at a time. You can set up a trash bag collector or else you have to consider the surface it’s running off of. A rusty old shelter roof covered in bird droppings for example
@@FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikes I was thinking off your tent fly not very efficient, but if I was caught in a rainstorm I'd always try to catch a cup full now and then for a change of taste. These are super awesome videos thank you
@@FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikes A little permethrin seems possibly better than the agricultural runoff you get for that first two or three hundred miles of the ECT. Down in the Florida keys, rainwater collection used to be the law because freshwater is so scarce. Every home had a cistern. (A very strange and little known history of freshwater sources in South Florida is that the hydrostatic pressure of the water from the Everglades used to be so great that there would be offshore freshwater springs in the saltwater ocean. . There were points you could row out to in the bay and collect freshwater coming up in the middle of a salty Sea. (By the way, you never mentioned how that fancy pesticide removing water filter worked out for you )
Wow. The suckitude of the Florida Trail is astounding! Kudos for not only taking it on, but staying positive while doing so.
That is an utterly masochistic trail.
You are tough!
It's been almost 50 years since I hiked into Bradwell Bay. I'm glad to see the boot sucking mud is still alive and well.
I live about 4.1 miles from that section. Daisy mentioned how you helped her so thanks for supporting your fellow hikers. Happy trails.
Thanks for the update. 👍
Nice surprise having the boat for the deep water
Just a heads up for the future, Avon's "Skin so soft" is a good deterrent against noseeums and tea tree oil is good for the bites.

Peachy O Rings and Goldfish...never leave home without em!!! My favorites!!!❤️
looks tough good luck amazing thing you are doing

The long swamp sections do make the road walks a bit more palatable
Closer everyday. Keep up the grind!
I am always amazed at how quickly the human body can get to a point of craving vegetables when out on trail...

Looked at some maps. You are in the middle of nowhere USA. Swamps may be the hardest hiking there is. Great attitude.
It certainly does feel that way some days
Glad we could brighten your day. Looks like we eat similarly on trail.
Darn those socks.
I could warranty them but I kind of feel they went above and beyond at this point...

They look like baby ticks or super tiny red dots..chiggers suck also know as red bugs!!
Agree with the nail polish
Wow! I've never seen that boat in water!
wait...different boat?

You missed out on those Betty crocker pasta salads next to the knorr sides. They are fairly tasty and a change of pace.
I’ll have to try those sometime. I shudder to think how many mash potatoe and knorr sides I’ve consumed in the last year or two
1001 miles ... woo hoo!!!
Just another 3,700 ish to go...
@@FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikes ... I’ll be following you all the way.

1001👣😎 Awesome !!
Do you have a copy of the Florida Trail guide on your phone or did you bring the whole thing with you?
Guthooks is better. I bought a copy of the print guide because it contained a section for the Keys Everglades Roadwalk but that was kind of a waste

“I’m still getting bit by those little bastards.” #masochistquotes
Florida Trail needs more foot bridges.
Some areas had them but they were taken out by storm damage
Don't you ever collect rainwater? (To drink)

Your welcome :) I have off and on put permethrin on my tent fly so I use runoff for wash water sometimes but not usually drinking water

So that's what fuels a hiker. food supply stops are very eye-opening. I know what fuels the bugs.....hikers
