One of my cats had something horribly wrong with his eye...my vet claimed it was an infection and the eye needed removed. I didn't feel right about it. I got a second opinion from another vet and I found out that it was just an ulcer. A treatable ulcer. May have completely altered his life if I hadn't gotten a second opinion. I'm glad when I was looking things over and researching I came to the thought of a second opinion.

My cat became sick one time over night, throwing up not able to poop.. have little spots. I knew she was just constipated or blocked... not to be disgusting but she has hard poops and always meows when she needs to go. Anyway she was not eating or drinking, and I know this for fact if a cat does not drink water in a 24 hour period their kidneys will fail. Well right the next morning I brought her to vet and they said she looked terrible.. dehydrated.... hair matted. anyway I made sure they gave her an enima.. and then she was give medicine to help her stool flow. well in a nut shell I ended up force feeding her with a dropper mixed with water and her dry food soaked... every hour or so for a week just to make sure she got water and food down and made sure she did not throw up. well two weeks later she improved and was able to eat and drink on own.
Now I moisten /water her soft food and add spinach... she loves it and it helps with her poops she does have dry food at all times but just in morning half a can of fancy feast watered down with spinach.. I always say when she does go... good poops Ruby.. to encourage her. Now she is a happy healthy, soft little love bug.

My cat has diabetes, shes 10 and have had it for almost 2 years. No matter what my doc said she wanted to put her on a dry food diet for diabetes but I researched and found out that they need wet food W/meat. I put her on an eating routine where she eats 4 meals a day about the exact time. 2 bigger ones first and last time of the day and 2 small ones. And from that she's been doing really good!
10 years old, healthy, very playfull still and is always around. SO I hope it means I am doing the right thing!

diabetes in cats is caused mostly because of dehydration throughout there entire life. my cat got diabetes at age 10 because i was stupid and fed him kibble his whole life, my vet too recommend more kibble and i refused. he lived to be 15 being fed wet food and getting injections of insulin twice a day and he was happy. he passed away from cancer though. my new cat eats only wet food now. i've painfully learned my lesson and i do everything in my power to prevent my future pets to suffer like my first cat did.

One of my cats, an 8yr old female DLH named Honey, suffered with allergies for years. We knew fleas were one culprit and we made flea control the highest of priorities. In spite of this, her allergies continued to act up. The vet would give her shots and things would calm down for a time, only to flare up again. It was disheartening to watch her scratch and zoom-groom all the hair on her flanks and tail off down to the skin. We changed her diet at the vet's suggestion, getting her on one that was grain free, dairy free, and by-product free. That made my whole cat crew healthier but didn't completely relieve Honey's allergies.
I felt kind of hopeless and like I wasn't a very good cat mommy because I couldn't seem to help my little princess. I didn't give up though, and I eventually stumbled across some internet articals on the use the use of Zyrtec in felines with allergies. I read everything I could from Veterinary webs sites to major scientific journals on the topic. The recommended dose was 5mg once a day, we started Honey on 2.5 mg. The change was amazing! She stopped scratching and zoom-grooming, she stopped hacking up massive hairballs, and she gained some much needed weight. Now Honey is happy and gorgeous with her long fluffy orange and white coat and a flowing tail to be proud of.
Keep researching, and don't be afraid to bring what you find to your vet ... he might be more receptive to your discoveries than you think.
    GO TEAM CAT MOJO !!!!

Our elderly Norwegian Forest Cat had been peeing blood, so we took her to the vet. For various reasons, we had very little money at the time, and we were paying with copious amounts of change, so the vet was well aware. She prescribed our cat antibiotics. I asked how certain she was about the diagnosis (because that was more money, but I was definitely ready to do it), and she said she was sure. We even waited there to get the test results back, and they told us that her urinalysis came back positive, so I got the meds.
A week passed, and she seemed to not be getting any better, so I called and asked for a refill or a switch to another antibiotic. When I went to pick it up, I asked for a copy of her records because my brother was visiting, and he's a doctor, so he might be able to help decipher some of the medical lingo. The first thing I noticed was that they had lied to me. Her urinalysis had been negative. She had a slightly elevated white count, but so many things could have caused that. My cat was in pain, peeing blood, and they were lying to me about the cause. At best, it was just plain laziness on their part, at worst, it was a ploy to get me to come back, even though we had very little money. They were playing with my elderly cat's life. We never used that vet again, and now I always insist on seeing the test results with my own eyes before agreeing to any kind of treatment.

After our incident with a Banfield Vet refusing to diagnosing my cat Tassel with diabetes. (because he was milking us for all of these other tests not related to her condition, and apparently he told his boss that I was refusing to give her insulin. She approached me to ask why, I told her that wasn't the case but really it was the other way around.) I started reading everything I could on Feline Diabetes. Hers wasn't the case where it would clear up if she got under a certain weight. We eventually had to put her to sleep because again, another vet didn't or wouldn't address her kidney disease (later in life). Since then I've found a much better vet & trust their judgement. And I've tried to educate people about, Declawing, Feline Diabetes, Kidney Disease, & Hyperthyroid.

    • @ConnieFaye
      @ConnieFaye Před 10 lety +2

      *****
After we got Tassel all regulated, she was back to normal, normal energy, attitude, playfulness. The thing is she got so sick from that vet, she was barely 7lb - nothing but skin and bones. She knew when it was time for her meds and would come to get me.

    • @imaof4
      @imaof4 Před 10 lety +2

I can only assume certain practitioners from Banfield or operators have this issue you've described Connie Faye. It's truly horrendous what you described!!
My mom has used them for years and has been very satisfied and I'm considering them for my area of the country (because of cost). For he past 14 years, I've been very happy with my vet. She has recently retired and sold her practice. I've no problem with the new vet ( a note here, the practice before and now, deals exclusively with cats). My now 17 year old cat is losing weight. Her blood work has come back that everything's fine (slightly elevated thyroid). I'm getting estimates on an ultrasound. Vet is suspecting kidney based on her physical assessment..
Here's where second opinion comes in to play. Vet is making an educated guess on an exam (she felt there might be an obstruction) and a clean lab report. Cotton has been eating and eliminating normally. What has been different is 1. refusing dry food and 2. weight (she's lost .8 lb - that's point eight).
Vet found a laceration on Cotton's gum, which could explain not eating dry stuff - it's an owie! :(
And yes, I do plan to search and question. Without a specific diagnosis, I guess I go down the list of stuff vet request ultrasounds for. Also, if I attend her mouth first. New vet says that's a low priority at the moment, but if it's painful to eat - even wet food...?

My cat Misty is 16 years old and has had chronic kidney failure for about 3 years, almost 4 years. At first we had to put her on a low-protein diet even though she was in the early stages of it. She had already lost about half her body weight and ended up eating everything but losing even more weight. Well last time my Mom and I took Misty to the vet for her check-up, my vet told us that new studies show that if cat's have chronic kidney failure but are in the very early stages of it, like my cat whose in iris 2 of it, you don't need to put them on a low-protein diet right away! Knowing this saved my cat's life I think cuz she was barely a pound and now she's gained about 2 lbs and is no longer trying to eat all our food!

Wow Jackson! My cat was diagnosed with diabetes 3 years ago and the first thing besides insulin that the vet wanted to do was the prescription diet. I went home and did research and couldn't believe I was feeding them wrong the whole time. I immediately switched to a high protein low carb diet which my vet did not approve of. My cat had neuropathy in his hind quarters and could not stand on his toes and he could not jump at all, his muscles had wasted away. My vet said it was unlikely he would walk normal. I worked with my cat with his new diet and encouraged him to take small jumps until 6 months later he was jumping up on the sink and walking on his toes again . His muscles came back and he is doing well. I have switched all my cats over to the same diet. I have learned so much just watching your show and really appreciate all the information you put out there for your fans. Also, congratulations on your marriage.

I went to the vet with her and he was telling her all these tests and medications that he needed and he would live for sure. I looked up the things he prescribed and the tests they were doing and none of them were necessary. He was just trying to milk as much money as he could. He was put down at our home about a year ago.

For so long I’ve been told my Kit Kat has allergies. But that’s not it AT ALL! I just watched TONS of videos of feline asthma attacks just to be sure, and it’s like watching her.
In the past month she’s taken a horrible downturn. She’s not in pain, bounces back for a couple days, goes back down. So I’ve got things “ready” here at home.
I can’t explain the heartbreak I feel thinking I’ve let her suffer. I have holistic experience with animals myself, and a vet friend I’m calling FIRST THING in the morning. Kit Kat is my 12 yr old, not even my oldest furbaby, and they’ve all always been in fantastic health.

The vet is DEFINITELY not the final word. I adopted 2 kittens from a vegan woman !
These cats were seriously underweight. I wasnt intending to take kittens after your program about black cats being hardest to adopt, so that was where my sights were set. But these kittens broke my heart. I immediately began a raw food diet of lean kangaroo meat which they gobbled down as if never having a meal. The vet had told this woman that a solo dry food diet was ok. 4 mths later I took these kittens to the vet ( I was locked into this vet for neutering due to adoption process) my female, an energetic everready bunny, has 6 weeks later never recovered. She has been back to vet 3 times, and each time I have been told her fever and gut pain are caused by the raw food diet. This is rubbish, because I should have 6 very sick cats all fed the same food at the same time. She has had pain relief injection, also antibiotic injection and one week antibiotic tabs. Lasted a while and down she went again. Told them she had to be force fed and syringe water . They wouldnt accept responsibility and wanted money before they would see her again. Friend said get bullocks liver and cut small, force feed, let her throw up but notice it is pale pink, she is getting the nourishment. I repeated this every 2 hours for 24, then she stood and ate from her own bowl....BTW she now hates bullocks liver.

    • @c8Lorraine1
      @c8Lorraine1 Před 8 lety +5

To just add the outcome of my female kitten not recovering well from her spaying operation.
During my 40 odd years as a cat companion, two cats come to mind as unwell and vet misdiagnosed , saying they need to be put to sleep !
A friend from a farm told me of a method he used when his dogs had suffered injury or sickness. He gave the liver, older the animal the better.
I cut the liver into tiny pieces, gave her half dozen pieces , forced down like the tablets vet gave me. She would vomit them back, BUT it was a lighter colour, meaning she got some nurishment, This I did every couple of hours around the clock. It broke my heart, but tough love was needed because vet wanted to end her life, so I persisted. Every two hours, as I remember those hours when my son was born.....new mothers know what I mean. My kitty began improving within 24 hrs, literally ! I continued then every 4 hrs, and supplementing her raw food diet with a light sprinkle of TAURINE powder from the health shop. SHE RECOVERED FULLY, and is eating and her playful self.

Many of her cats have feline AIDS and taking a holistic approach, using herbal and other treatments, she's managed to gives her cats a longer and better life. I'm a scientist, a sceptic, but when the vet tells you the cast will live for 2 to 5 years and they lives for another 10 years plus you got to take notice.

This is so true, My kitty had diagnosed with Feline urinary tract infection, he had to go through surgery and afterwards our Vet told us to just keep him on Urinary track disease food, and we looked it up. We knew that fruits like Figs and papayas are the best to help digestive system and specially to help the cats get the rid of those rocks. So we have a fig tree and we bought some more fruit and he went for juicing for that week, and 5 months later he is doing so well, and of course we kept up with vets medicine and changed his diet which made a HUGE difference, not only for him but for the Rest of our cats, Please always take care of them

Fortunately my vet was willing to try diet, and prescribed Purina DM, and to start feeding measured meals instead of free feeding . Within a year Beauty lost 2 lbs and her blood sugar is now normal. Yes!

I firmly believe my vet killed my cat. The moron gave my kitty a rabies shot (without informing me prior, or me giving consent) while I left the cat at the office to get a biopsy of a tumor. Just like humans, animals should NEVER be given vaccinations while they are ill. I was using natural methods to help heal my kitty, and had started feeding raw, and the tumor seemed like it was responding...before the shot. My sweet, first cat I ever had, went only downhill after that, and had to be put to sleep. (Thank God there are vets here in my area who come to your home to perform that service.) It was a rough lesson on trusting vets. I now feed raw, and I also use a ceramic drinking fountain for my cats--not plastic. Another kitty I had who was sickly for 10 years, has been healed solely through these changes.

Yeah, I got the card to bring the cat in for followup, too. I know not all vets are this callous, but since my cat died this way, I have heard SOOOO many similar sad tales. Wish I'd heard these tales before I left my kitty with that vet. I even researched vets, this was the only one near me who (claimed) to support holistic treatment, and all the reviews I could find were good.

I've bought some books on cat or animal homeopathy, natural healing, and a book called Four Paws Five Directions, Herbs for Pets, New Choices in Natural Healing for Dogs and Cats, Homeopathy for Your Cat, Homeopathic Care for Dogs and Cats, etc. I think it's almost universal for someone who has cats to wind up feeling like they've dropped the ball and failed to notice signs and symptoms or failed to make the best decisions. Don't beat yourself up, just keep learning and trying to do better next time.

I had my first (and so far only) new born kitty to take care of and the biggest source of info I found was the internet. The vets did gave some general ideas on being a mother cat but it was the web that really gave me the info I needed.
It was the same for my girl. She passed away a year ago from FeLV and back then I found some forums on the web that let me know some important things. On this case that eating sand from the sandbox might be a sign that she had less blood. The vets didn't want to believe it 'cause it was info from the net but a week latter she got worse and yep.. her blood count was really low.

When my little feathery bro fell ill four years ago, I went to two vets to get two diagnosis (the first vet was clearly an idiot who didn't know what he was talking about and didn't care how he handled pets) and I made him go through a treatment to help with his cancer. People thought I was stupid to do so, that it was just a bird and that I should just euthanize him but I did what I thought was best and he stayed almost two more years (compared to the two days people thought he would). These two years were just not the same anymore, like he knew what I was doing for him. Now, on the date he passed away, instead of buying him a gift, I give the same amount to a bird shelter (since he was found under a car).
That's wonderful that you consider pets just like family and that they deserve the same treatment as humans. There should be more people like you in this world! (Right now, I'm considering adopting a cat so I watch your videos to know what to expect since I never had one before! :) )

We rescued my male cat Duke, from the Humane Society. He was 3 months old when we got him. They had him on Science Diet and he couldn't even eat it because the bites were too hard for him to chew. He was very skinny when we got him. He didn't even weigh a pound. I immediately put him on Kitten Chow and supplemented with Kitten Formula. He gained 6 ounces in 4 days! Science Diet Dog Food is currently on a recall list due to Salmonella. I know the Cat Food was under recall back when the Chinese-made cat foods were recalled. Always check the recall lists before feeding any new or different brand cat food. And I never feed any food not made completely in the U.S. Chinese dog food has been killing dogs for 5 years or more. It causes kidney problems. I don't want to run the risk their cat food does too.

Science Diet is not worth being used as a door stop. Guys, you need to look at the ingredients of your cat food - my rule is, as much NAMED meat as possible (such as for example 'chicken' or 'deboned turkey,') meat as the first ingredient, NO corn, NO wheat (these grains are VERY bad for our carnivorous pets!) NO beet pulp (cats do NOT require fibre in their diets and neither do dogs - they are carnivores and their natural diet does NOT include it,) NO byproducts (usually the byproducts are not fit for human consumption so they are not fit for your pet either) and please keep in mind that what grain or veggies that are in the food are of usually very little benefit to the cat. I will say that a food with berries such as blueberries or cranberries in it is a very good idea because they help acidify the urinary tract which helps prevent urinary crystals. It is also prudent to mention that dry kibble diets are inferior and that much better, health promoting diets are ones that are wet. If you can't afford raw and you can't afford to feed straight canned food, then at least supplement your cat's diet with canned food, or find a way to turn your cat's kibble into wet food. (Chicken broth would probably do very well - make sure that it doesn't include onion or garlic which are poisonous to cats.) As a general rule, any food available in a grocery store is no good. Cats don't need fancy shapes or food colouring and they certainly do not need vegetables. They need meat from named sources and liquid in their diet (not just water on the side) because cats came from the Egyptian desert and out there, animals get most of their water from their food because water just isn't usually readily available. As a result, most of our domestic cats are chronically dehydrated because they are never fed properly moist food. A moist diet is the best preventative to most diseases, especially urinary tract crystals. Please educate yourself about pet nutrition! It's the best thing that you can do for your animal to promote your pet's long term health - and cats, when cared for properly, can easily live to 20 or more years. One of my cats right now is 17 and going strong.

Always trying to get out, biting, fighting, peeing (still working on that one), and just all around "typical" feral cat ways. Then about 4 years ago I lost my first born (a boy) at 23 days old and around 2 month after my son's death my cat woke up one day and it was like night and day. He wanted to be around me he wanted to lay with me he started trusting the family he stopped trying to get out but at the same time he also still needed routine and began to become obsessed with me. Now if I even step outside for a "cancer stick" and make sure he sees me he still freaks out and waits in the window and the second I open the door he is right there and we spend 5 min. just petting and kisses and when I get up and go upstairs he fallows. I love him and I'm glade he loves me too but I think I may have let it get too far and now I don't know what if anything I can /should do. How do you know when their bond has gone too far? how much love is too much?

I agree!!! YOU are the #1 person to know what is going on with your cat so at any sign of a problem you should be online absorbing as much relevant information as possible. Multiple vets had no idea about my cats' health problems... and they really should have. It was simple once I looked closer, but vets just aren't trained to tell people certain facts, especially regarding commercial cat food! I had to research hours about what felines really need and a raw diet has made their problems a thing of the past. The first place you look should be GOOGLE.

So many people don't give one "Google remedy" time to show progress or lack there of, before adding more in or switching around quickly. They are creatures of habit & their systems need time to adjust to whatever you're trying, to see which way the results are going.

We ARE totally capable of critically evaluating sources. My point is, you can learn A LOT about cat health online. It's not like the internet is just an attempt to fool you. Although there is occasional propeganda and opposing viewpoints, we can take the time to just absorb information rather than taking action on the first thing we see. We are not powerless in the face of information.

sometimes Vet clinic/hospitals are the death to your pet. I have a 8-year old cat which kept licking his belly and paws excessively that the hair was gone. after 3 vet visits and doing some lab work and Vet assuring us it's not a major issue. 2-months later he had obstructed bladder. Vet told us that it's s simple procedure. Half an hour after we left our cat in the hospital, We get a call that the bladder is ruptured and they need to immediately open him up and do surgery, which we agreed. He was allowed to leave hospital on Monday, cause he wasn't eating and the Vet told us that he maybe stressed because of the location and if he goes home, his appetite may comeback. On Wednesday, we called and told the Vet that he has not eaten much or relieved himself. Vet told us to bring him back and they will do another X-ray. This is where it got really interesting, my wife is a radiologist and she confronted the Vet that how can you see fluid on X-ray!!!
The hospital sent us to another emergency hospital in which have sonic scan, which reveals fluid. after their diagnosis, they informed us that the rupture is re-opened and his bladder fluid is everything within his organs, and he is in much pain. WE got two options, first to do surgery in which they can not guarantee success and if it was successful, due to damages already done to other organs, he may be a vegetable where we have to feed him thru tubes, etc.; second option was to put him down immediately cause he has so much pain. so, we agreed to put him down.
Now, all Im saying is after spending over $3K dollars, we had to put him down cause a vet did it all wrong. you would think that an animal hospital would be a better choice to clinics; but it sure proved different to us.
I live in Seattle and West Seattle Animal hospital which is considered a good facility, literally killed our cat cause they did not have the equipment or expertise to go on with the procedure. But it did not stop them with going forward with the procedure, comfort us that they do this type of procedure all the time, or take much money to eventually cause the death of our beloved cat.
My point is, choose your vet carefully and always get second opinion. Do not rely on stars or whatever else you see online. Vets are just as clueless about most issues as a blind bat.

Never hesitate to ask your vet if your cat is acting weird.
My Rabi slept a lot two years ago, but first I shrugged it of as "probably just because of the cold weather". But then she also got really ... light, somehow. I don't know how to descibe it. She didn't acutally lose much weight, but everytime I pet her or lifted her up it felt really wrong. Two days later she woke up with a badly swollen eye. She had eye problems before in winter, but never that bad. And when she suddenly snuck up in my work room a few hours later and just laid down beside me I knew something was very much wrong with her. She didn't visit me there in months.
We took her to our vet immediately after that. Turned out she had a bad tooth and the infection had spread to her right eye. I was so worried about her that I spent my whole winter holidays in the same room with her. She was so weak the first days that I was afraid she could die if I left her alone for only two minutes.
Luckily she made a full recovery over the following weeks. The vet called it a miracle that she didn't lose her eye ... or worse. It still gnaws at my conscience that I didn't help her sooner, I could've spared her of so much trouble.

When it comes to sickness....sometimes you never find out until years later. A few years ago my cat suddenly fell ill. Other then one of his pupils being wide (really just one) and that he kept bumping into things, there wasn't anything wrong with him but his health kept getting worse. We couldn't find anything on the internet, and the vet couldn't find anything either. Vitamin B12 helped but only for a little while. He died within a month. Now years later, my stepfather started with the same "symptoms" (one wide pupil and bumping into things because he saw dubble) he has a brain(stem) tumor. And on top of that, our neighbor had a cat with the same symptoms as well. That cat had brain tumor as well. We moved so we don't know the rest.
We suspect that our cat had the same.
If someone has a cat with the same non telling symptoms, I hope this might point in one of the right directions. It's not much but if it can save one cat I'll be happy.
Remember, it might be something else. This is just one option. But if you suspect something like this, have the vet rule it out or confirm it

I think a lot of vets are well intentioned, but it's your job as your pet's guardian to know your vet and their practices and have a relationship with them. They should know what you expect from them and what your views are for your pet. I have a great relationship with my vet and they know exactly 'how we do' so to speak. Even with our rescue pets they know what we have done regularly, what our procedures are and so on, and we have never had a problem.
No vet should be insulted if you ask for references, or ask to just sit and talk to them at an appointment. Ask what procedures they endorse and what their policies are. A bit of elbow grease in the beginning can lessen a lot of heartache in the future

My cat started to throw up a lot. What should I do? We don’t know what is making her throw up.

Several years ago my little princess aka princess pinky nose dropped a lot of weight. So I took her to the vet. Said she had lost close to 8 lbs. He was going to keep her for the day while he gave her an infusion of fluids and would draw blood to see if he could find what was going on. In the mean time, he suggested I get some baby food to add to her food (which was currently Prescription Diet CD, our cats have self feeders and our older male blocked, hence the CD) as a means to help her gain weight.
Shortly afterwards she started urinating in spots other than the litter box and she had very noticeable blood in her urine. Back to the vets. There was a small stone, which he put her on a special food to break it down. Went back 2 weeks later (still bloody urine), stone now gone. He felt the bleeding was from the stone passing. She still was not gaining weight so he told me to add wet food to her dry food diet.
Fast forward a few years. She had gotten sick after eating the wet food (still never did gain back the weight). This was during the time some of the wet food out there was tainted, so I thought maybe she had a can of food that was tainted. The next morning I woke up, and she was listless on the floor. I rushed her to the vet hospital that I had started using 40 minutes from home. (Changed vets because we had a Great Dane, this new vet was more able to deal with any issues with the Dane, and I didn't like the old vet. He likes working with dogs more than cats).
My little girl had a complete blockage. She spend 7 days in ICU. Needed surgery. They told me she blocked because she had a severe case of cystitis. I told them about what had happened earlier. They requested the records from the old vet. Found out he had never done any blood work. Had he done what he said he was doing maybe my little girl would not have gone through what she did. I was able to bring her home, but we lost her 3 months later. She was only 11 years old.
What I learned from all of this is to trust my gut instincts. And that just like with humans, we do have the power to say "no I don't want that done or I have done my homework and I think we need to try this." Just like doctors, if you present your position in a non threatening manner, acknowledging that they are the specialists, but I know my cat and what is the norm. More times than not the vet will listen to what your saying and try what you want. And if they don't they will tell you why they do not think its appropriate.
Jackson is right, Do your homework. Pay attention to what your cat is or is not doing. And not be afraid to be an advocate in your pets treatment.

Our vet told me my cat only had a few weeks if that to live...that was two years ago. I got the thyroid and liver meds as well as the special food and some antibiotics for my cat and was diligent about researching and caring for her. She's still with us, but is I'm told in renal failure now with a bloated belly due to the toxins her organs can't deal with and swollen back paws. I couldn't afford her meds or special food anymore so she's been off them for the past few months until a few days ago when I was able to get Care Credit. She is perking up a bit with the meds I have, but still waiting on her special food and another med to arrive. While I don't want her to suffer or be in pain, I also feel we have a mind set in this culture that says it is more humane to put them to sleep...I'm not sure I believe that anymore. Had I let her go two years ago, I wouldn't have known there was anything I could have done to address her issues. I'm wondering now why is it ok in our culture to euthanize animals, but we don't do that with humans. How is this ok, right, moral even? I don't know the answers...these are just thoughts I now have after dealing with my first elderly cat and illnesses. It's exhausting keeping them alive and dealing with their condition not to mention financially draining for most of us, but they are worth every single penny and bit of energy we can muster in my opinion.

I love this so much! I totally agree.
Without researching common cat issues, I would have never of known what signs to look for when a cat is sick. I would have never known how common urinary crystals are in cats and might not have noticed the change in my cats urinating habits early enough to stop the issue from progressing and becoming deadly. Luckily I caught it immediately and changed his diet. Full 360 for him and he's all good now.
Also, just recently I was told that my cat was probably having troubles keeping on weight due to her recently surgery. I felt like this wasn't the reason as I noticed the issue before the surgery. So what'd I do? I decided to get a urine test done even though it wasn't recommended by the vet. Turns out she has an off balance pH, urine crystals, and a urinary tract infection. Whether this caused the weight loss, I don't know yet. I'm thinking I should get her blood tested as well to rule out any other issues, even though this was not suggested either. The only reasons why I thought to get these other tests done are because I looked up her symptoms online and read about common issues that can cause weight loss in cats.
    THANK YOU, internet!

My cat got sick last night looked like terrible tummy ache. I wonder if she ate the stinkbugs I been spraying. Little bleech with dish soap kills them fast. Those bugs are so dumb they fly into even land on me. Poor kitty. She was starved as kitten living off of a golden retrievers dogfood and had worms when got her. She eats obsessively and freaks out if food bowl is at all empty. Surely she would avoid stink bugs smelling like clorox... She is better today hope she knows what made her sick.

Kinda furious with my vet. Zelda (18, +Leuk) had pancreatitis last year. They put her on antibiotics for a short term, plus prilosec to keep it down. Then they gave me Cyproheptadine to encourage her appetite which worked great. Then this spring, when I took them all in for shots (never doing that again at their age), she dropped weight super fast. Vet said her age + the Leuk + the distemper shot + her being a drama queen (my determination, not his) from having to go in after so long without going anywhere gave her colitis. They gave me a saline bag for dehydration, meds for the colitis and Albon to coat her stomach. The saline and meds did their job but the Albon did nothing. She was still not eating. I had some old Cypro and boiled some chicken for a more bland diet they suggested. I went back to them and asked if the Cypro worked before, why didnt they Rx it again? They did not have an answer for me but gave me a new Rx for Cypro. Her energy is up and she is eating and is not dehydrated but she still doesnt eat as much as I think she should. Being old, shes gonna have lost muscle tone but I dont think she needs to have her spine sticking out. She does not like the soft food. She wont eat the baby food chicken that she loved when she had pancreatitis. She barely touched the boiled chicken (will not eat rice). She seems to like her regular food but she doesnt eat much of it if is older than a day. I still have the Cypro but shes kinda over me squirting meds into her. She just foams up and Im not sure how much meds are getting into her. Any advice from yall would be helpful.

It's ironic that you're posting this now; I know it isn't a feline related story, but I've been going through this with my ferret and her recent diagnosis of insulinoma. There's no cure, but the vet prescribed meds, and my own research suggests that switching her over to a raw/whole prey diet will help prolong her life at this point (and may even help prevent insulinoma from developing in ferrets if switched to raw/prey at an early age). So that's what I'm doing, and the research is ongoing. I even researched to get her properly diagnosed in the first place because they weren't testing her glucose at proper times before, so they thought she didn't have it, but I kept seeing the symptoms and they fit.

I know life is hectic and cats can be aloof but take the time to sit down and stroke your cats. It's those few minutes which you get to really give him a once over for lumps, swelling, tenderness, discharge etc. I'm giving my cat less dry food although they are convenient. It's just unnatural. I doubt they can metabolize carbohydrates anyway.

I'm glad I came across this video. I was floored when you said you found out your cat has asthma from looking up symptoms on the internet - that's exactly what I did this morning after the third coughing/wheezing attack my cat has had in the past three or four days (that I've witnessed at least). She has an appointment this afternoon to make sure that's what it is! I'm glad I have a heads up though!

My family had 2 cats who were half brothers. The oldest one's personality was very aggressive to everyone but my mom (lol). His aggression only showed if you bothered him or touched him too much, he liked to be alone with my mom most of the time. When he was 10 he randomly bit me from out of the blue, which was very unlike him, and his tooth broke off and was jammed in my leg. The vet told us he had a very rare gum disease that he caught at a very young age, and the disease caused him a lot of pain which he asserted through his aggression. It was one of those diseases that could've been maintained if we brushed our cats teeth everyday, but we were not knowledgable at the time. Instead of constantly forcing the medications for my cat, we decided to let him go. My mom was most upset about it, but she didn't want him to live being forced to take his medication and pain at some times during the day. She was so upset, my dad brought home 2 new kittens the day we let him go. Hahahaha With a total of 3 cats, we educated ourselves as well, feeding them canned and raw meat meals, 4 litter boxes, and brushing their teeth every night. We felt really bad that we didn't do our education first before bringing them home, now that we are, we have 3 beautiful healthy children in our house :). And we encourage anyone bringing any pet home to do their research before adopting them.

you need to make your cats life a priority. You agreed to take over responsibility for his life. If you are afraid he is going to die and is sick, there are low income vets and worst case-people you can surrender cats to that will get them the help they need. Places like Noah will take surrendered cats. Obviously then you would no longer have your cat, but it sounds like maybe right now you cant afford to have one. Your cats safety is priority. Don't be selfish if you're afraid it is going to die. I'm sorry that you're going through this, as someone who also has a cat and is also often strapped for cash I can completely understand where you are at. But just like he says in the video, take responsibility for your cats well being just like you would take responsibility for your own or your children's. Look for free or low cost vets. Sometimes churches will host mobile free vets. Online is a great resource. Good luck

Our vet offered to see if we could qualify for a medical credit type thing that both humans and animals can use to pay for their medical needs. We went to the vet and were going to scrape to pay the bill but the receptionist offered to call right then, and within 15 minutes our bill was paid and now it's less that $30 per month to pay it back, no interest if paid back fully in 6 months! Wish my kitty survived but this made me rest at ease knowing that money didn't stop me from being able to go to four return visits. Just call and ask a vet.

Alexandra Loomis I completely agree. My brothers cat recently passed turns out he had FIP and there was no way he could have been helped. I would like to spread awareness that if you think your cat is seriously sick get them checked out so if anything you can spend their last moments in the best way instead of waking one morning having no idea your pet would die that day. My brothers cats name was Moonshine and everyone thought he had a cold but he was acting like this for weeks and now he's buried in my yard. R.I.P my little buddy I miss you

One of our little girls got REALLY sick last year. I came home from work one day and noticed that she had bloody spots all over her face and back. Her skin was sloughing off of her face. We immediately rushed her to the vet the next day to see what was wrong with her. I assumed that it was a food allergy but my vet wasn't convinced. It was a very rough couple of months seeing our girl continue to go down hill. Our vet couldn't figure out what was wrong with her and had us bring her into the office once a week. She hates going to the vet and we hated putting her through it. She would rub her scabs off all over the inside of the carrier and would bleed every where. It was such a painful ordeal for every participating party. I still believed it was a food allergy and switched her food even though the vet recommended against it. I put her on Hill's Ideal Balance and she hasn't had any problems since. Even though the food is expensive both of our girls seem happier and healthier. $500 later, I learned I should have gone with my gut reaction and switched her food. She still has scars all over her face and body but she is happy and healthy.

The last few animals I've had lived quite a bit longer and happier than some animals in the past. Mainly because I didn't buy them on impulse, but did my research before I got them. I think a lot of the problems people have with their animals is because they mean well, but don't know what they're getting themselves into.
