  • Why Do Cats Throw Up so Much?
Like most beings, cats throw up from time to time. When is it normal and when should you be worried? What are the causes and are there solutions? I am not a veterinarian nor do I play one on tv, so please always use your best judgment and take your cat to the vet if you the least bit worried.

Mine, too. One of my family's four cats had his little incident, but was considerate enough to head outside to do his business. He puked twice, both times in small amounts. The first was a puddle about the size of a 50 cent piece and was covered in white foam. The second was a string of food that he mostly slurped up.

I had given them one of the popular ones that is "fancy" lol.........and I had named her Lucy, your comment caught my attention because of the name lol Anyway, the vet put her on mild food and it cleared up. Tried the fancy one again because we weren't sure if it was the food or parasites or stress, and it came back so she is now on a better quality food and she is fine, she and her sister are having a ball! Hey Jackson, I just watched this video. My calico passed a year ago from advanced renal failure at approximately age 14. I learned a lot from that heartbreaking experience. She threw up probably a few times a month when she was younger. I didn't have a lot of money and skipped regular vet visits. I ended up moving and I noticed she was throwing up almost daily. I finally took her to a vet at my new home. They tested her kidney function and she was at late stage 3/early stage 4. They had me change her food. I'm still embarrassed and upset she was so sick and I didn't realize it because her throwing up changed slowly over time. Anyway, I guess on the one hand, her diet change got me 6 great months with my cat. She stopped throwing up as much and seemed more energetic. She passed quickly at the end. She stopped pooping and they gave her an enema. She had advanced in the disease and they told me it wouldn't be long. I still had about 12 good days with her at that point before she stopped using the battery and eating. But just want to share regular throwing up could be renal failure. I ❤️ you kitty and miss you.

I sadly had a very similar experience. Also renal failure and my cat was also dehydrated. I felt horrible and my vet was very gracious about it. He took amazing care of her for a couple of days and then sent her home on a rx diet, I think it was one by Royal Canin, and she actually lived several more years. Now I'm very sensitive to vomiting and took my 9 year old cat to the vet recently and requested bloodwork that they didn't think was necessary. She's in great health but they suggested maybe I try a sensitive stomach diet and/or probiotics. So far the Purina One sensitive stomach and skin food seems to be working. 1 week and no vomiting!

Speaking of asthma, a video on kitty asthma would be great! The symptoms look like vomiting so it can really trick humans into thinking the cat is a puker. The sad little gasping weeze and stretched out neck, the hilarity of getting a cat to accept an inhaler, and how to figure out the causes of attacks would be helpful.

    • @abbynormal4740
      @abbynormal4740 Před 2 lety +16

Agreed. Our girl kitty occasionally has spells of wheezing in the hunched over, outstretched neck posture described - like she's trying to hack up the MOAH (mother of all hairballs) but nothing comes out, and the vet could find no answer. I later developed severe asthma and often have attacks of coughing and wheezing that can sound much like our cat's wheezing fits. So we both have asthma (although kitty's is mild), from different causes, and share some triggers. She doesn't need inhalers since her spells usually resolve quickly. But on a couple of really bad asthma days, we shared a few breaths of nebulizer mist when we both had wheezing attacks hit at the same time.😷🙀

@@abbynormal4740 Since you AND your cat is coughing and wheezing, a word of advice from someone who learned the hard way.....have your home checked for any sources of black mold. Both I and my two cats got very sick in our previous home from undetected black mold in the basement. Now that we've been out of it for a few years, and received medical care for the effects, we are recovering and the asthma has gone into remission. People (or pets) who are not allergic to mold won't mind it, but a sensitive person will react.

Yes! My kitty will get an upset stomach if he goes too long without food. We've been having a "battle" recently- he needs to lose weight, so I cut his carbs. Unfortunately, he's a kibble addict, so the high protein wet food was a bust. It's too expensive for me to keep trying different textures/flavors because he turns his nose up at it, and the whole can goes to waste. So the next best thing is high protein/ low carb dry food, and he hates it! He will go on hunger strikes for days, and that's when the vomiting happens. His poor little tummy just gets so empty! 😭 So I tried mixing his favorite kibble with the high protein stuff, about a 50/50 mix. He tries to pick around it, but I know he's at least getting a little of the healthy food. My cat is such a stubborn little dude...

I tried to "comment " in the aggression portion. I have a now almost 4 yr old ragdoll who I absolutely 💯 % ADORE & LOVE. When she was 5 months old - a kitten, her owner died & her owner's sister took her in to keep until she could select an appropriate loving new owner, HOWEVER, she already had 4 other dogs & 3 or 4 other cats & Willow ( ragdoll kitten) had been an only pet. Willow was severely traumatized. I was thankfully chosen to be her new owner. When I got her she was just turning one year & I only had to pay to spay her - SUCH A BLESSING! Ragdolls are expensive cats.......
Now, after having her for 3 years, she still has a couple bad habits from that trauma that I don't know how to deal with. She has bonded with me wonderfully & I probably love her too much if anything, but she is my "baby" - when she has 'had enough' of something & I don't see it coming or pick up on it, will take a swipe at me. I know she feels remorse because of the way she acts after I say "OUCH! WILLOW!! BAD GIRL!!" - She will come up close to me & look me in the face squawk talking as if to say, "I'm sorry, please forgive me"- kind of funny but too fresh to not try to do something about...
Any suggestions as to what I should do or how I should respond?

My cat was over grooming, throwing up hair balls once a day, and itching under his chin and around his eyes so much he developed bald spots. At first a thought it was anxiety because we just adopted him and he has had a traumatic life, but we learned from the vet it is food allergies. He also had sores on his lips. For some reason food allergies didn’t occur to me! I think we tend to assume that cats can handle any type of meat but that clearly isn’t the case. Thank you Jackson for talking about this issue.

I'm allergic to wheat (pollen and in food) as well as lactose intolerant but I'm ok with goats milk if the goats haven't eaten any type of wheat (took time to figure out...) I used to feed strays outside with cheapish cat food time to socialise them then find them a home. One we never found a home for and when we moved we kept her. She lives in the "garage" mostly because she can't handle visitors so she comes in the house when it's just us. I noticed that I couldn't go near her due to allergies... And her poop was too sloppy. Turns out I am allergic to cat pellies containing wheat and she just doesn't digest wheat! She also lost weight, she seemed to be doing water retention... She's 8 now and we're both doing much better!

I had one cat who had this and changing his food to different proteins helped. I think it was changing him to a source of protein that he never had before like venison or duck. I hadn’t suspected food because I hadn’t changed his food but apparently this can emerge after a time.
My current cat overgrooms after flea bite. I’ve never seen a flea on him or anywhere, but must’ve gotten bit maybe I was a few days late in applying his medication or it wore off earlier than I expected (it’s supposed to last a month and I do them every 4 weeks). Apparently some cats don’t just get itchy for a flea bite but develop an allergic reaction and overreact for a longer time. When I took him to the vet, he pointed out two cats in the waiting room with the same issue. I now apply his to flea medication every three weeks.

The solution was to feed him right before bed and leave it out for snacking. But the cat would only eat at night if the food was upstairs near his people. Thanks to our vet and some careful observation we now have a happier cat.

I started paying close attention to what she ate each day she threw up and it seemed that most of the time it was after she ate something with tuna! I cut out tuna and the vomiting has been greatly reduced. Still going to talk to the vet of course but I'm pretty convinced that was the problem!

Whether I’m angry about having a streak of shit across my carpet or not, ass dragging means the turd is all smushed up into her fur, requiring water to remove, an experience neither of us likes.
I trim her fur in the back to prevent that problem, but it grows back pretty quickly. Creepily, she enjoys having her nether regions trimmed with scissors, though I have to be really careful. It’s really easy to accidentally nip a cat’s skin with scissors.

I took him to the vet since he was 2 years old for this and we tried several things, limited ingredient food, different feeding methods, allergy medications, etc. It wasn't until he was 14 and I was taking him to a cardiologist for his heart condition and he was getting chest x-rays every 3 months that we finally found out why he why throwing up so often and was so skinny. In one x-ray there was a mass near his lower lungs, but then in the next one 3 months later it was gone. He had a floating stomach, a hernia in the membrane that was to keep his stomach in place allowed it to move into the space between the lower part of his lungs. As sad as this was to hear, it was better than the alternative, cancer. However, at his age and the fact that he had a heart condition he couldn't have surgery. But he lived for another happy and, relatively, healthy 2 years, and was still playful until a couple of days before he passed. So if your cat's throwing up a lot and is really skinny ask your vet about floating stomachs, but don't be surprised if it can't be diagnosed. I only found out by a fluke chance. Best of luck to anyone who's going through something similar. 😸

We had a cat that always ate a bunch of dry food and then drink a lot of water and then barfed. I learned to take the water bowl away when she was just vacuuming up her dry food. I would give her a very small amount of water in her bowl about 15 minutes after she was done vacuuming. That mostly took care of her snarf and barf.

Had been binging your videos lately just to find about this topic, thank you Jackson for those tips. My 6 yo cat has always thrown up more regularly than the others, with "barfing activity" often happening on streak during a few amount of days each month. Vet checked him and said he was fine, our main suspicion being chewing on grass for the cause. I cut grass for them and while this streak of throwing up is not regular anymore, it still happens every few months. Considering checking him on another vet and possibly looking into any problems he may have.
Another younger cat has been recently starting to hack without any throwing up whatsoever (although he has finally started to barf once or twice a month unlike before). He would also be going to the vet to see if this time they find asthma or he is still healthy.
Although these behaviours can keep me up at night I'm certainly glad they don't have any problems with hair balls or parasites. Then there is the last of the pack, another 6 yo cat which I haven't even seen throwing up as much times as her age. 🐈

The part of that movie I remember best is at the end, when it zoomed into a cat's head, and the cat's brain/emotion minions included a cat in the background doing the perfect head bobbing thing that they do when they're about to hack something up. Hard relate when that happened.

As someone who works in TNR and kitten rescue (enough to have ended up with 5 from whom I could not bear to part) I cannot tell you how infuriating the cream dream is. So many cats are surrendered simply because their owners didn't take the time to acquaint themselves with their new pet's basic biology. I keep it simple for potential adopters: Give your cat dairy? Expect diarrhea. Staunch Vegan? GTFO, no kitten for you.
Have you done a video on that yet? Vegan cat food?

My sister's cat threw up three MASSIVE piles overnight while I was sleeping, so I had to assume it only happened in a space of a few hours. When I woke up to them and cleaned everything up, it was pretty obvious which cat it was as she had a staring coat, was isolating herself from the rest of the clowder and was overall looking pretty miserable. We just observed her that day with the intention of a vet visit if her poorly spell didn't lift on its own by the next day.
Well, it did lift, and we discovered the culprit behind her misery was a house millipede she'd happily devoured. They come up our drains so now we've had to keep them plugged because the cats will eat them! Makes me shudder to think about it. While the millipede itself isn't toxic, the oils on them can be so we put it down to that and took some better precautions. Oh and we also found two dead millipedes in her poo. :) Nice visual for you there.

10:23. One of my cats gets asthma due to allergies (we think she’s allergic to the outside world 🤷🏻‍♀️) and it’s exactly this...a hacking cough. The vet gave us Prednisone tablets that help heaps. Edit: you can’t use human prednisone for cats because the dosages will be wrong so please don’t.
    * Cats need a vet if they have cat asthma *
11:11 she also gets IBD (because she actually has ‘triple allergies ‘. It affects her skin as well, she gets sores all over her body).
We tried SO MANY brands and types of food (cost us a lot of money trying different brands).
If your cat has IBD and you’re in Australia, I highly recommend “Fussy Cat, Grainfree, Chicken and Turkey with Cranberry “.
You can buy it at Woolworths (the bag is black and white) and it’s the only food my cat can keep down. We were desperate until we found the Fussy Cat brand.
    I hope this helps someone...🌸

We went to many different vets, and tried different medicines and diets, but nothing seemed to help her. The vets couldn't figure out what, exactly, was wrong. She did end up living until she was 18 years old, and she lived a very happy life other than the seemingly constant puking, but to this day I wonder what exactly was going on with her for her to throw up so much...

How unusual is it for a letter of cats from the same litter to have asthma? My cats do the hacking, but vets don't know the cause. None of them think it's asthma, because ALL of them are doing this and they sound and behave identical during episodes. They crouch down and start coughing or hacking, been doing that since they were kitten's. The episodes are incredibly infrequent now that they're older, but still concerning since they all have this symptoms. They don't have any illnesses such as parasites. I got a new kitten a little less than a year ago from the local shelter. He exhibits a lot of behaviors that point to him being orphaned at a very young age, one of the main ones is his food obsession. When I first got him he would eat until he was sick. If there was food anywhere he wasn’t allowed to have he’d cry, and he’ll eat almost anything, food or otherwise. Over this last year I’ve been able to train him to be way more comfortable around food. He has to sit before he gets the bowl and he’s not allowed to eat until I tell him he can. Somehow, that’s gotten him to eat slower and be more comfortable walking away with food still in the bowl.🤷🏽‍♀️
