  • Should you use entrances in your honey supers? I certainly believe so! In this video I talk about the entrances I use on my honey supers. These disks provide a variety of options to the beekeeper. Join me as I show you how!

    On a super the bees will usually pull the wax out further on the frame to fill the extra space, thus more storage for the honey. Easier to uncap too.

    Thank you for posting this! I have been trying to figure out how to keep the bees from back filling and get them up into the honey supers. I am ordering the entrance discs right now!

      I’m so glad you found it helpful and thank you so much for the super chat! Please let me know how they work out for you. I’ve had real good luck with them. Cheers!

    Looks good! I have 2 supers I put guardian upper entrances on and they didn't go in and out of them but used them for drying. I'll probably switch them to disks like yours. I do offset our boxes in the flow though so the bees can go in and out of the rabbet. Gus Mitchell showed this in some of his videos. Thanks for sharing. I'm excited to see how the Hogg half combs get drawn out.

      Ah, I’m not familiar with Gus Mitchell. I’ll have to look him up. I figured it’s been done before I just haven’t seen it. It works well for me Brian so I’m curious to hear your experience if you try it!

    Be interesting to see if your honey volume is better with the upper entrances compared to those without.

    Entrances on Supers have actually been used for decades, in Europe you can buy poly Supers from Abelo with entrances already built in. Most people in the UK don't use them but some swear by them and your bees clearly like them. 👍

      @@leeknight9063Just being in a flow will help. The best method is to ensure there is a good coat of wax on the foundation.

    I run 2 deep brood boxes, a queen excluder, and medium honey supers with 8 frame spacers in them and get massive frames of honey and beautiful virgin wax cappings to render and sell, and it has worked out well! I may have to try out those disks, I have seen that before, but just haven't tried it yet, but it makes sense by your thought process.

    Do you see with using the entrance on the honey boxes the brood box is more open for the queen to lay? It seems like my brood boxes are being back filled with nectar.

    • @beesintheweeds
      @beesintheweeds  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Yes, and that is the exact idea behind the method. The receiver bees remain in the supers and do not have to travel back and forth between the queen excluder. Of course some food (nectar and pollen) is brought below to feed the brood. To me, this maximizes the efficiency of the hive in foraging and depositing nectar. Keeping the brood chamber open for the queen is exceptionally important when running single brood management as I do.

    do you leave the entrance open most of the year? I need to know more about this please.

    • @beesintheweeds
      @beesintheweeds  Před 3 měsíci +1

      I do not. I keep it open in queen excluder mode during the flow. When the flow ends and it starts to get hot, I switch to ventilation only mode. Then I pull supers and extract. If there is a chance of robbing, I will close them off completely. In rare cases do I leave them wide open.

  • @slava790
    @slava790 Před 3 měsíci

    Am I correct in saying that your setup does not encourage robbing?

  • @sybilreneemcgowan1472

    Why do you use a nine frame set up instead of ten frame? Just a curious browser asking, not a bee keeper.

    • @beesintheweeds
      @beesintheweeds  Před 3 měsíci +3

      I like using nine. Easier to uncap. I think it’s the sweet spot. No pun intended. Haha

    • @anthonymuma4602
      @anthonymuma4602 Před 3 měsíci +1

      With nine frames the bees make the honeycomb wider so it sticks out past the wood frame. That makes it easier to cut the cappings off and it holds more honey in each box.

  • @sybilreneemcgowan1472
    @sybilreneemcgowan1472 Před 3 měsíci +1

    Sorry, eight or nine frame instead of 10. I went back and listened to your count again.

    • @beesintheweeds
      @beesintheweeds  Před 3 měsíci +2

      No prob. The bees will draw the wax out further with nine frames than ten. It makes uncapping much easier when extracting the honey.
