- The Science of Kids Hitting: Elbow Drag
A common problem with youth hitters is that they misunderstand the fundamental principles of swinging the bat. Elbow drag is a drag as the player gets older. You mom, dad and coaches can help your players by having a better understanding of the basic function of how the anatomy works in a good baseball or softball swing.

What are some drills that would help with this?
Great stuff, kid. This has given me a couple of ideas for future content-thanks. Hopefully, I can remember them for the next time we have lunch and chat about hitting and things. And congrats on getting over the thousand mark...
Ouch! "I will have to watch it a couple of more times to understand everything" Hope all is well Rich!
All is well, Ron. Just shows I am not that smart I guess. HA! Maybe I should edit that out so people won't think that.
So how do you fix it?! This is what my 10 YO daughter does. And we can’t figure out how to fix it.
Hi Ron. I have bat drag, but I'm able to pull the ball well when hitting off the tee and I also pulled a solid foul ball in a game. Why is that?
But most of the time I hit soft oppo shots, pop-ups or strikeout. I never had anyone address my swing as a kid or teenager and now I'm 27 and have trouble fixing my bat drag.
Thanks!
Seems like you are slicing the ball and swinging across. As oppose to getting behind it. Try "snapping" your barrel at the pitch, like using a hammer. Sideways hammer motion if you will.
I help coach 11-13 year olds in Canada. This absolutely nails it. It is incredibly helpful for putting into words something I have been seeing. Great coaching makes a complicated thing simple. This makes it coachable, even for us inexperienced coaches. Are you going to be doing swing challenges again this winter? Can you post a link for how to get involved?
Thanks for the kind words! Here is some info about the challenge Chris
