How to Become an Exchange Student | Steps to Organize Your Exchange Year

today I am coming to you with a must-see for any future exchange students. I am describing you all of the steps you need to take if you want to become an exchange student and study abroad anywhere in the world. My first-hand experience is obviously on how to become an exchange student in America, however, all of these tips are also applicable to all other target countries. I will talk about the decision making process on whether you want to become an exchange student, the application and interview process with your exchange student organization, how to apply for scholarships as well as the preparation once you meet your host family and know which high school you will be going to. This means I will take you through how to organize your exchange year step by step.

Just giving a suggestion to all the future exchange students out there. They should be respectful of their host parents. Being a host family is a big responsibility, we didn't get paid to welcome anyone at our home. In fact taking in another person will be an additional expenses on our part. In our case, we welcome this young girl from Spain. We open our house for her, we treated her very special like she was one of our own children. We have taken her to different places so she could see the beautiful places in the US. She never spent a penny in any of those trips. But in return, she talked bad about us on her social media. There's no telling how much lies she has told people about us. It so sad that there are young people out there who believe they are entitled to everything. The stuff you watched on TV regarding the American life is very different in real life.
You're right. It's important for exchange students to realize what a great sacrifice it is for host families to open up their homes to them. Unfortunately, adolescence isn't exactly the age where people are the best at being appreciative. However, I believe most host family and exchange student relationships are harmonious and amazing for both sides. I'm sorry you had a bad experience. I hope it doesn't turn the idea of hosting students sour forever
That’s very unfortunate. It seems like the best host families always get the worst exchange students and wise versa or at least it was that way with the people I talked to. I’m gonna be an exchange student in the US this year and I’m determined to be a good, low maintenance member of their family. It hurts me to see when people go to a different country, take everything for granted and don’t adjust to the cultural norms

Well, i did have a question. I really want to get into a school in norway, for robotics, even though i live in the states. I have a low gpa, but im really interested in norwegian culture and solving problems. I need all the help and advice i can get

I will definitely make a video on all of the reasons why exchange years are a good idea so you can use some of the arguments ;) In my case, I made all of the plans, got lots of information and even figured out which organizations seemed the best. Once my parents realized how much effort I had put into the planning, they knew I was serious and that it was a dream of mine. From then on, it was very easy to convince them. Have you tried talking to them about it already?

Hey! Can I graduate from a US High school on a J-1 visa?
Because I'm in grade 11 right now and would like to do my 12th grade from a US High school so would it be possible?
It really depends, i suggest gmailing the exchange programs via their contact information and just ask, I've already asked 2 questions and im studying up my exchange for a full month before i tell my parents 👍

is it even worth applying if you only have around a year until expected departure?
I would say it's always worth a try. Usually you can find the deadlines when looking at the organization's website. I would recommend to start planning a year before departure but six months should also be okay. Just check your favorite organizations, sometimes they have spots open until very late

I have a very stupid question, I have very short height, 150 cm, will it create any problem for me in usa? If yes, how can I deal with it? And also want to know how can we maintain personal hygiene there, as a girl?
First of all, there are no stupid questions! I am happy to help you with any answers. I don't think being 150cm is going to be an issue at all. I am 165 and was rather tall for a girl there. I have seen somebody your height play basketball so you can do anything there. What do you mean by personal hygiene? Like for your period? Most people in the U.S. probably use tampons or pads and you just buy them at the supermarket. U.S. tampons are different from what I am used to as they had weird plastic bits to help you insert them. You will probably also find menstrual cups in stores. Has that answered your questions?

@@Ramsay-of4bv it's often possible to go right after your graduation. But you might also want to check out volunteering, uni or au pair options
If I go to an exchange year , will I need to “repeat” a grade? Per example, I went to the exchange year in grade 11, so when I come back to my home country, will I later be in 11th grade again, or I’ll be in the 12th grade??
I think it honestly depends on your school and how your credit system works. I’ve been trying to figure this one out myself, and I’ve been told that as long as I take the classes my school NEEDS me to take (English and Math) than they can transfer my credits over meaning I won’t have to repeat a grade. Though I’m still not 100% sure!
it really depends on the country that you currently live. For example I have to repeat my year back home after my exchange
Yes you have to repeat it
I did not have to repeat my year. It depends on your school system and which grade you go in. In the German school system if you do the G8 system, you can leave after grade nine and then skip year 10 and go straight into year 11 when you get back. It caused me a few problems in math but otherwise it was completely fine and I'm happy I decided to skip. It's something to discuss with your school. Go up to your English teacher and they will either answer the question or refer you to the principal. :D
@@itsnathben9513 That always depends on a few factors. I didn't have to repeat for example. In any case, however, doing an exchange would be worth repeating a grade
