The original MB system really dates these cars, in fact even when new it was a terrible feature IMHO. The new Unit you installed looks great. For me, I'm not that technology inclined let alone do all the deconstruction needed to get to the removal of the old Unit LOL. My '09 300 doesn't have SatNav / GPS so I get along with Garmin, and as for music, for longer trips USB sticks filled with my preferences work for me. But thanks for showing us what needs to be done to get that great update.
Your video could not have come at a better time!
The nav function on my 2003 clk500 has packed up with respect to satellite reception. Have tried a couple of eBay used antennas that are located under the boot lid but no joy.
So considering a new branded after market unit. However a few cautionary tales about Mercedes cars with the Command system and getting all the original functions to work.
Having seen your excellent video I am now searching for a specialist with experience on the CLK!
Will have one last go and connect my STAR ( cloned) diagnostics to see what it can do if anything ….
Thanks for the detailed video, very clean install... However, gotta say I much prefer the look of the stock unit 😋
You’re kidding right…?!
@@mguytv The stock unit is hideous, when I take mine out I'm going to smash it to pieces just for fun...
Just a couple of side notes - you forgot to mention that to make life easier you probably also need the Aerpro "FP953000 Universal double din mounting kit" that I think I can see in your video (unless that came with the Alpine) that clips into the Aerpro fascia that the head unit in turn clips into. Also, depending on the age of the car and original equipment you may find (such as with my 2010 SLK - sigh) that there is no time setting option on the MFD. Everything is done via the old head unit. To get time control via the MFD you need to find someone with the right kit (DAS/STAR) to reprogram the car by going into Control modules > Communications > instrument cluster > Control Unit adaptions > Optional equipment and then setting "Comand = NOT PRESENT" after which the time setting option should then appear on the MFD. 🙂
😊😊😊😊
Very well detailed. I'm glad you realistically included the functionality limits on these aftermarket replacements such as the dashboard display. My question is are the rear speakers connected ?
Mine doesn’t have rear speakers - only the Harman Kardon ones do I think
@@mguytv but yours is a Harman Kardon COMAND NTG 2.5. Had the SD card slot and surround sound. I recognize it from its separate manual Mercedes issued. I’d bet money on it.
where did you put the carplay doc or cable ? :) thank you
I'm going for the add on with original screen. 2012 e class. About 750 euro installed with guarantee. Navigation update from Becker-Mercedes is almost 500 and is good until the next construction zone opens. 750 for Android auto/car play is fine.
Will this Alpine work on a 2016 SLK300 and does it have a back up camera option?
The head unit might have separate AM and FM antenna inputs. If so, that's why no AM reception. I'm guessing that could be the case, since FM requires a shorter antenna.
Only one input for the HU and the Mercedes antenna only has one cable (worked for both bands on the previous HU)…
Nice vid! I also just installed an aftermarket radio (Pioneer 360dab) . Did you try to change the clock already?
There's a trick to it...!
re AM check that the head unit is coded / setup for the AM channel plan in Australia
It turned out to be a problem with the antenna amplifier which is now resolved
One question. What would it have cost if it was installed for you by the retailer you bought the Alpine system from?
That’s a good question - unfortunately don’t know… probably a lot since MB audio is notoriously complex…
@Mguy Australia - how did this head unit work with the ModsForCars SmartTOP header unit that lets you tweak the firmware limitations of the car (roof closure/opening when moving, remote roof open, etc.)? I ask because I remember you saying that this required you to something with the radio for one setting change, has this head unit affected the functioning of that at all?
Very good question. Yes it does prevent the usual method of changing the SmartTop settings, however they’ve thought of that: czcams.com/video/qLuuIAkwxtw/video.html
@@mguytv it's functional but messy - I guess you're not changing the settings very much so it's probably not an issue. It would never work on a BMW of course (insert BMW drivers joke here)....
Also it must be very confusing to the guy behind you at the lights!
Do you think it is possible to use the original OEM GPS connector into an aftermarket unit like yours? Granted it may need some conversion but still should work in the after market unit - right?
It's possible - I will check the wiring diagrams and see if there are any other components (e.g. amplifier) between the antenna and the plug
@@mguytv That would be great, many thanks!
Just got quoted for the Kenwood HU install, parts, labour $2,593, seems reasonable. After watching this I'm wondering why you chose Alpine ILX-507A over Kenwood DDX9020DABS? Any advice would be greatly appreciated...
Simply that the guys at Brookvale recommended Alpine - and the original MB Comand head units were made by Alpine as well… I don’t think it matters - go with what you like!
@@mguytv ok cheers!
How much do you regret it? Now that the steering wheel buttons don’t work with the infotainment system? Or that the new upgraded system is too loud for the speakers and not in sync with the car’s amplifier? You’ll be back to stock system soon.
No I won't. Thanks for watching.
@@mguytv I promise you will, if not, you deffo won’t be redoing this on another car and you’ll settle for the stock system that comes with the car, because this system sounds like crap, will lag/freeze, is too loud for the cars amplifier, has a mind of its own and not in sync with the cars brain e.g. steering wheel functions. You’re welcome.
@@rikkyash2353you sound like a lunatic projecting.
LOL "AMG" Hat
I did this and it didn’t work then got told by Ali express that my car play systems canbus was taken away and brought back by then while they waited I have anti terrorism police after me when I ain’t even Muslim lol
